Scion tC big on content and style, small on price Neil Moore York Region Media Group Metroland Media Mention Scion to the average carbuyer, and if you don’t get a blank stare, you may hear some reference to their iconic, but boxy xB model. You know, the one that looks like a toaster. It’s a love-it-or-hate-it kind of vehicle. But that particular cube car, which I like, is only one of three, and soon to be one of four vehicles in the hip, youth-oriented Scion lineup. This week’s tester, the 2011 Scion tC, is their hatchback/sports coupe, and is in my mind, one of the most attractive vehicles in the Toyota/ Lexus/Scion model range. I’ve been a fan of Scion since 2003, when Toyota launched the brand south of the border. The new models were an abrupt departure from the company’s conservative offerings, and were designed to attract new customers to the Toyota family. Buy a Scion in your twenties; move to a Camry in your thirties; swap it for a Sienna when the kids arrive…

The 2011 tC sports coupe, like other cars in the Scion lineup, offer loads of standard content and leading edge style for a surprisingly low MSRP. Until now, you likely haven’t seen more than a handful of Scion vehicles on the streets, other than perhaps a few xBs that have been brought up from the U.S. But that will soon change. On September 28 of this year, Scion launched with 45 dealers in
the “culture capitals” of Montreal, Greater Toronto and Vancouver. The company claims to have reinvented the dealership experience by providing attractive and interactive “store within a store” showrooms at select Toyota locations. And to reach the younger demo-
graphic online, the recently redesigned scionnation.ca offers some very targeted content and cutting edge functionality that includes 3D renderings as you build and price your vehicle, an accessory configurator for customizing it, Scion news, multimedia content from Scion-
sponsored events, an interactive magazine and more. I like the company’s alignment with latest trends in music, art, fashion and sports, but I’m guessing they probably don’t need too many of us geezers over 40 adopting the brand and ultimately reducing its ‘cool factor.’ Which is why Scion is marketing through a variety of initiatives that resonate with the younger crowd, such as tuner shows, and events at clubs and art galleries. Oh well, so I’m not one of the style-conscious Gen Y “opinion leaders” they seek, but I do appreciate the brand values and am smitten with the styling of their tC sport coupe. From the outside, the tC has none of the swoopiness of a previous Toyota sport coupe, the Celica, but has instead more squarish lines that somehow work well with its classic coupe proportions. In keeping with this more linear look, the roofline is flat until well into the rear passenger compartment, preserving headroom, unlike many other coupes. The tC’s low front and rear fascia, protruding wheel arches and wide track give it a ground-hugging appearance. And its standard 18-inch, seven twin-spoke wheels are a treat for the eyes. You heard it right; a base vehicle with smoking hot 18-inch alloys instead of crappy 16-inch steel rims. When the Honda CR-V launched in 1997, along with rival Toyota RAV4, it helped define the compact SUV segment in Canada. It offered a more fuel efficient, more agile alternative to the monster, truck-based sport utilities of the day, and quickly proved itself as the ideal vehicle for hauling small families and their stuff – whether around town or on snowy cottage roads. The CR-V’s 126 hp, 2.0-litre inline four-cylinder was no powerhouse, but it was still fun to drive and brought plenty of buyers to the Honda nameplate. Since then this vehicle has grown a little in size, substantially in horsepower, and even
further in terms of styling and content. Recent changes include a redesign in 2007 and a refresh in 2010. The CR-V, now in its third generation, is unchanged for 2011. The 2010 refresh included minor updates to the front fascia, grille and rear bumper, along with a few colour changes and added content availability. There was also a bump in horsepower from 166 to 180, but torque remains at 161 lb/ft. But after all these updates and styling tweaks, the CR-V still looks remarkably similar to the original. Sure it’s more polished, but its trucky, tall-box design has aged gracefully and offers the kind of passenger and cargo room that are hard to find in some of today’s curvy crossovers. On that note, CR-V’s cargo volume
– at 2,064 litres when you fold and tumble the 60/40 second-row seats – is on par with “trucky” competitors like Mitsubishi Outlander, Suzuki Grand Vitara and Toyota RAV4. It also has the edge on the Ford Edge and is substantially roomier than the sleek Kia Sportage at 1,547 litres. Some competitors, like Edge, RAV4, Outlander and Chevrolet Equinox offer both four- and six-cylinder models. The CR-V is only available with a 2.4 litre, four-cylinder i-VTEC engine. But if I had any doubt about Honda’s decision to stick with a four, it evaporated when I pressed the pedal. This robust powerplant delivers lively acceleration and has no problem passing or getting quickly up to highway speed. And it’s also pretty
fuel efficient at 10.1/7.5/9.0 L/100 km (city/hwy/comb). Indeed, the CR-V fares well against its competition. With year-to-date sales up 42 per cent compared with overall compact SUV numbers that are only up 16 per cent, this puts the CR-V in the top three of its segment. Why the continued success? It’s not all about price, as this Honda, which starts at $26,290 for the frontdrive base model, is somewhere in the middle of its competitors, many of which also start as four cylinder front drivers. And the CR-V is more expensive than compact and slightly less compact rivals from Hyundai and Kia. With Honda, there’s a quiet understanding that you get what you pay for. The vehicle lineup has a reputation for outstanding build quality,
not to mention fit and finish, and the CR-V is no exception. It starts with unit-body construction and features many strategically strengthened areas and liberal use of high strength steel for added rigidity. Body panels and interior components are tightly fitted, with what is known as a “zero” gap for the front and rear bumpers, or less than a single millimeter. Sounds impressive from an engineering standpoint, but what I noticed was a vehicle that had virtually no squeaks and rattles, along with doors that closed with a satisfying “thunk” rather than a tinny rattle. the floor, firewall, cargo area, side pillars and roof, along with double door seals, have created a fairly quiet cabin. Road noise does, however, intrude at highway speeds. Safety is another area where Honda excels. This starts with the Advanced Compatibility Engineering (ACE) body structure, which protects occupants by dispersing energy away from the cabin, along with a rigid safety cell, six standard airbags, vehicle stability assist with traction control, antilock brakes with electronic brake distribution and brake assist. All CR-Vs also come with an electronically controlled five-speed automatic transmission with grade logic control to improve smoothness and reduce gear hunting on steep grades. Even the base unit gets a long list of standard items that include 17-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning with air-filtration, power locks and windows, keyless entry, tilt and telescopic steering column, intermittent wipers front and rear, steering wheel-mounted cruise control, conversation mirror with sunglasses holder and fourspeaker, 160-watt AM/FM/CD audio system with MP3/ WMA compatibility and MP3/auxiliary input jack. Other standard interior amenities include a fold down rear centre armrest with integrated beverage holders and reclining rear seatbacks with centre pass-through. If you want the benefits of four-wheel-drive, add another $2,000 to the entry model (MSRP $28,290). This system typically runs in front-wheel-drive mode for better fuel efficiency, but seamlessly routes power to the rear wheels when more traction is needed. Four-wheel-drive and two-wheel-drive models can
be optioned up further, with highest trim level, EX-L Navi, topping out at $35,590. This model is fitted out very much like an Acura sibling, with premium features that include leather seats, heated in front with 8-way power adjust for the driver; dual-zone climate control; power moonroof; Bluetooth; seven-speaker (with subwoofer), 270-watt premium audio system with satellite radio; navigation system with bilingual voice recognition; rearview camera and more. One handy feature (on EX models and above), is a dual-deck cargo shelf in back that can hold up to 9 kg (20 lbs) with enough room below for groceries or a couple of golf bags. This is one of many ways you can tailor the CR-V’s passenger and cargo carrying ability. There’s much more to explore in this thoughtfully designed vehicle, and it’s worth a visit to the Honda web site to check out the features and trim levels in more detail. After my time with the CR-V, I realized there was no single aspect of the vehicle, for example styling, that really stood out. Not that these elements were in any way lacking, but that everything worked so well together, I simply got in, turned the key and went about my business. No excitement, no drama. Just a functional, efficient and comfortable vehicle that made my life easier both at work and with my family. Which is just what I’d be looking for in this kind of vehicle.

Mazda Canada has announced the 2012 Mazda5 compact multi-activity vehicle will have a starting manufacturer suggested retail price (MSRP) of $21,795. It will go on sale in Canada early in January 2011. The new model will be offered in two trim grades: a well appointed GS and top-of-theline GT. A new 2.5-litre, four-cylinder engine which produces 157 hp and 163 lb/ft of torque powers all versions of the Mazda5. A new six-speed manual transmission is standard, with a five-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission optional ($1,200). Air conditioning, Dynamic Stability Control, Traction Control and dual front and side airbags for first row passengers and side air curtains that protect all three rows are also featured on every new Mazda5. With the flexibility of seating for six, or up to 857-litres of cargo space, rear sliding doors
for easy access, 16-inch alloy wheels, air conditioning and numerous safety features, the 2012 Mazda5 GS is very well equipped for a starting price of $21,795. An optional Convenience Package that includes: Bluetooth hands-free connectivity, cruise control, trip computer, leather wrapped steering wheel and anti-theft alarm system is available for an additional $845. The top-of-the-line Mazda5 GT trim grade standardizes all the equipment from the GS with Convenience Package and adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated cloth seats, lumbar support for the driver seat, SIRIUS satellite radio, Xenon headlights and Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) for $24,395. In a historic moment for Nissan Motor Co. Ltd. and zero emission vehicles, the 100 per cent electric Nissan Leaf was awarded 2011 European Car of the Year. The world’s first mass-marketed, affordable, zero-emission vehicle for the global market beat 40 contenders to win motoring’s most important accolade. This is the first time in the 47-year history of the annual competition that the award has gone to an electric vehicle. Nissan Leaf’s rivals included vehicles from brands such as Alfa
Romeo, Citroen, Dacia, Ford, Opel/Vauxhall and Volvo. The jury included 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries. Nissan Leaf is powered by a compact electric motor in the front of the car, which drives the front wheels. The AC motor develops 80 kW of power and 280 Nm of torque, enough for a maximum speed of 145 km/h (90 mph). A Nissan-developed laminated lithium-ion battery with an output of more than 90 kW powers the electric motor. The car has a range of 175 km (New European Driving Cycle) between charges making it a practical proposition for many urban drivers.
The Nissan all-electric Leaf has been named the European Car of the Year by a jury that included 57 leading motoring journalists from 23 European countries.

Scion’s tC Coupe offers spirited performance From page W1
equipped, mono-spec vehicles with no trim levels, just ‘a la carte’ accessories. Other than colour, there’s only one decision to make: whether or not to opt for the six-speed automatic for an extra $1,050. For a base MSRP of $20,850, the tC offers a surprisingly long list of standard features. These include air conditioning; power windows and locks; keyless entry; tilt and telescopic steering wheel; satellite ready, eight-speaker Pioneer audio system with automatic sound levelizer and steering wheel audio controls; cruise control; Bluetooth; outside temperature gauge and more. The tC even comes standard with panoramic sunroof with power tilt/slide front panel. On the outside, the tC gets projector style headlamps, heated side mirrors with signal indicators and a rear window wiper/washer. There’s also a full suite of standard safety features that includes eight airbags; front and rear disc brakes with ABS, electronic brake force distribution and brake assist; vehicle stability control and traction control. Like all coupes, you have to swing open a massive door to get inside, but unlike many, access to the rear is easy with seats that slide well forward. And with standard driver’s seat one-touch walk-in (with track and seat angle memory), it slides back to where you left it. The 60/40 split folding rear seat is recessed for the two outboard passengers, with a narrow rise for the third passenger position. It’s probably okay for short trips. Rear leg room, on the other hand, is abundant for all, which is unusual for a sporty coupe. Up front, the sport seats are comfortable, with grippy fabric and deep bolstering around the thigh and shoulder areas. There are adjustments fore/aft, height and recline, but if you want heated seats, you have to order the leather package for $1,975. The interior includes abundant hard plastic throughout, but it’s not off-putting. Instruments are easy to read and the large rotary knobs work well with gloved hands. I’m not entirely sold on the audio system faceplate and controls, but the sound quality is good and it can be upgraded to a 200-watt Alpine Premium unit with touch screen and TFT display for an added $535, installed. The tC gets a big four cylinder under the hood, a 2.5 Litre, DOHC, 16-valve with dual variable valve timing with intelligence that delivers a robust 180 hp and 173 lb/ft of torque. Not bad for a car that weighs in at 1,377 kilograms. This powerplant is mated to a slick-shifting, six-speed manual with clutch takeup that is neither too gradual nor too grabby. The combination offers spirited performance and a fun factor that is more likely to bring a smile than get you into serious trouble. I didn’t have an opportunity to drive the automatic, but on principle am opposed to paying more for a feature that is likely to bog down an otherwise nimble ride. The suspension is Macpherson gas struts with stabilizer bar in front and double wishbone with stabilizer bar in rear. This setup provides sporty handling with little harshness on rough roads. Cornering is relatively flat, and the amount of understeer isn’t bad considering the tC is a front driver. This coupe, like all other Scions, gives buyers the freedom to customize their ride with a variety of parts and accessories, including a full line of Toyota Racing Development (TRD) performance gear. Many of these 75 or more options, like the rear sway bar, performance brake kit, front strut brace and lowering springs, are only available on the xB, but the tC does have several that include a hood deflector, rear spoiler, performance exhaust system and more. These TRD parts are engineered for each vehicle, and the company expects to expand on their current offerings for the tC. In any case, most TRD parts (excluding air intakes and superchargers) are government compliant, can be sold on the new vehicle’s bill of sale and be financed with the car. And when installed by a dealer, you get the balance of the factory warranty. Over the counter sales are good for 12 month/20,000km warranty coverage. The Scion tC, without being optioned up, can compete directly with the Honda Civic Coupe SI, which has a few more horses at 197, but a lot less torque (139 lb/ft). And you can get the tC for about five grand less. Indeed the Scion tC is a relative bargain, and when you consider its fun driving dynamics and knockout styling, this sporty coupe should not only grab the attention of younger buyers, but also those who are young at heart.
