Mauricio de Souza Tavares is a Brazilian national and qualified lawyer specializing in Intellectual Property Law. He is married and his son is currently studying Computer Sciences at UFF-RJ. His work experience includes several years with established firms such as Tavares Intellectual Property in Rio de Janeiro and Advocacia Pietro Ariboni in São Paulo. He also was also General Manager for Avantiq do Brasil, a subsidiary of IQS Avantiq, a trademark search company based in Luxembourg. Initially he graduated in Marketing from ESPM but them went on to study Law at Universidade Estácio de Sá, in Rio de Janeiro. His marketing qualification assists in adding a more business orientated flavour to legal remedies and issues which is well liked by his many clients. He is a full member of the Brazilian Bar Association, Brazilian Intellectual Property Association (ABPI), and International Trademark Association (INTA). In 2013 he made a somewhat radical decision to open his own boutique law firm with his business partner where he currently practices. He offers a broad range of IP services principally in the areas of registration and protection of trademarks, patents, software and copyright; licensing contracts including transferring technology and rendering technical services; as well as protection of domain names, trade secrets and rights of image. The firm’s current client portfolios include Volkswagen/Bugatti, Audi/Lamborghini, Sony, Sega, Aegis Group, Tencent Holdings, The Financial Times, Laura Ashley Limited, DTS, Inc. and Chelsea Football Club Limited. With extensive experience in trademark searching, having worked for some of the largest multinationals in the world, he has developed a strategic approach to trademark protection based on wide-ranging knowledge. His previous close contact with the Marketing and Strategic Planning areas of these companies has spawned a top level relationship with these professionals. He speaks at conferences and events for many Brazilian Associations, such as SEBRAE (an organization specialized in advising and counselling small and medium sized companies), ABA (Brazilian Advertising Association), ABF (Brazilian Franchising Association), and also has much experience as an in-house speaker for local and international firms and clients. For a time, he was also an Intellectual Property lecturer in several Brazilian Business Schools, such as IBMEC in Rio de Janeiro and Estação Business School in Curitiba. Currently he is a participating member of the Building Bridges Committee, with the INTA – International Trademark Association, and has authored several articles on Intellectual Property for Marketing and Business websites.
