NEWS

From President Donna Bridickas Dear Seton Keough Alumnae, Parents, and Friends,

FALL 2015 ADMINISTRATION

When this edition of Seton Keough News arrives at your home we will be in the Christmas season. I hope you can find a few quiet moments to read about the wonderful things happening here at Seton Keough. Our school year began by celebrating with our Archbishop Keough alumnae the 50 years our school has been open. We were joined by a number of women who were in the first ninth grade class. Our students were impressed as the Keough alumnae all stood and proudly sang their Alma Mater. The celebration concluded with our inaugural Taste of Seton Keough. It was truly a success. We hope to see you next year at this event on Saturday, October 15, 2016.

This edition includes our annual list of donors. We are very grateful to those who remember us in their prayers and who have contributed to our annual fund. Your generosity helps the young women of Seton Keough continue in the proud traditions of all of our alums. If you have not contributed to the annual fund, please prayerfully consider giving a donation during this Christmas season. Your donations will help us to continue to upgrade our academic programs and facilities. I trust you will enjoy the features on our accomplished students and alumnae. Under the direction of our campus minster, Mrs. Melissa Boyle, our students and faculty engaged in a day of service where they ministered to the poor and marginalized in our community. As you know Pope Francis has declared this year as a Jubilee Year of Mercy. As you read about our students’ commitment to community service you will see that Seton Keough continues a long history of encouraging our young women to practice the corporal works of mercy.

All are welcome to our Alumnae Mass to be held on Monday, February 1st as we celebrate Catholic Schools Week. We welcome you to witness the faith and hope of Seton Keough as we look to the future. May peace be your gift at Christmas and your blessing all year. In Christ,

Student Profile

Seton Keough’s Community Activist: Annabelle Arnold SK’16 LAST YEAR SENIOR ANNABELLE ARNOLD ASKED THE Seton Keough administration if the school could host bee hives on campus. The reduction in bee populations worldwide is having an alarming affect on global food production. While the school was not ready for such an experiment, they appreciated the passion from a student who is passionate about just about everything. An honor student, Annabelle is taking four AP classes this year in addition to completing her fourth year of the PLTW engineering program. She is also taking senior religion, French IV—one of her favorites—and a college-level psychology class at Anne Arundel Community College. She is the president of the Student Council, president of the International Thespian Society, stage manager of the Theatre Department—she just finished working on “Into the Woods,” vice president of the Math Honor Society, secretary of the French Honor Society, and a member of the National Honor Society. This year, she renewed the Environmental Club at Seton Keough and restarted the school’s recycling program, “with bins we received for free from Coca Cola; it only takes a letter!” An activist in many areas, she helped organize the Gator Bowl last spring, which was an opportunity for several area high schools to play touch football and raise funds for the charity of their choice. She is making plans for the Theatre Club to volunteer at a homeless shelter in Catonsville this year. On her own, she sought out the nationally recognized anti-bullying effort

“The Kind Campaign” and invited them to a special assembly in October. The founders of the Kind Campaign, Lauren Parsekian and Molly Thompson, personally brought their message to the entire Seton Keough student body in addition to invited middle school girls from other area Catholic schools. Annabelle says she was attracted to Seton Keough because of the warm sense of community and strong academics she witnessed when she visited. She was very interested in the school’s engineering program and thought that she would likely pursue a career in engineering. However, during her junior year she traveled to the South Pole with a Students-on-Ice Antarctic Expedition, where Annabelle spent two weeks studying the environment and climate change. Her experience there has changed her mind about her future. She is applying to the University of Maryland and Boston University among several colleges with plans to major in environmental science and minor in filmmaking—she not only plans to learn about how to save the planet, she would like to create documentaries that educates everyone about the future of planet Earth. “This school is a good place for making your ideas come to life,” she says. When Annabelle approaches any member of the faculty or administration, they are always open to help her with whatever plans she has to make Seton Keough a better place. Next year, Seton Keough will miss her, but congratulates the college or university who will have her advocating on campus for them for the next four years.

During The Jubilee Year of Mercy Seton Keough Students Dedicate Themselves to Prayer and Works of Charity WITH MUCH ANTICIPATION THE SETON KEOUGH community waited as Pope Francis made his first visit to the US in September. Campus Minister Melissa Boyle asked students to prepare for his visit with acts of charity. The Campus Ministry Club prepared food that was donated to My Brother’s Keeper. The school collected shoes as part of the “Feet for Francis Fundraiser.” The shoes collected become inventory for small business owners, or micro-entrepreneurs, in 26 developing countries, including Haiti, Honduras, Tanzania and Colombia. In early October, Seton Keough held the first ever, all-school retreat and service day. The freshmen and juniors spent the day in prayer at their class retreat and the sophomores and seniors spend the day in service. The junior class spent the day at Holy Trinity Spiritual Center in Pikesville where they focused around the theme of loving relationships. They reflected on what does a loving relationship look like with God, us, and other people. The freshmen stayed at Seton Keough for their retreat. There they focused on what it means to be women of honor and focused on helping those who are marginalized.

The sophomore and senior class put their faith into action and visited various service sites in Baltimore City, Baltimore County, and Anne Arundel County. The sites included packaging meals for people in need, serving at Our Daily Bread, interacting with the children at Sarah’s House, which is a family shelter, and making and serving casseroles at My Brother’s Keeper. Later in the afternoon Drew Carberry came to speak to the sophomores and seniors about what it takes to be a strong leader and to serve. In January the classes will switch and spend another day in service or prayer. During October and early November Seton Keough held a Thanksgiving Drive for food and toiletries. Over 2,000 items were donated to the Ronald McDonald House and My Brother’s Keeper. In December, the entire Seton Keough community participated in the “Making Spirits Bright” drive to collect toys and or warm weather items—hat and gloves, scarves, and socks. The items were distributed to SWES, My Brother’s Keeper and Project HOPE. On December 12, the Seton Keough Parents’ National Honor Society, and Vincentian Outreach Club collected food and served a Christmas brunch at My Brother’s Keeper in Irvington.

Sports Notes Field Hockey

Soccer

THE 2015 SETON KEOUGH VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY team was lead by captains: seniors Koya Yancy and Jessica Wells, and juniors Madison Altenburg and Megan March. The team was made of players of varying levels and experience that worked hard to improve with each game. The coaches were impressed by how quickly our new players improved their stick skills and field sense. The teams leading goal scorer was second-year player Destany Popkins. The IAAM B Conference coaches named goalkeeper Megan March to the 2015 All-Conference team. The coaches are proud of the effort given by everyone and are looking forward to the 2016 season. Go Gators! — Coaches Stumme and Melvin

FOR MY FIRST YEAR AS HEAD COACH, I WAS HEARTENED and encouraged by the progress we made this season. We started the season slowly, but worked hard and competed in all of our games. We are a much better team than our record showed this season. Juniors Erin Solloway and Kaitlyn Whipp both provided solid defense. Senior Aubrey Sims has played four years of varsity soccer, and provided strong leadership returning after a major injury and as team captain. Sophomore Alexis Kasco was named to the IAAM All-Conference Team. Many thanks to our seniors: Aubrey Sims, Ashlee Durham, Heather Williams, and Brittane’ Stinebaugh — Coach Steven McDonald

Volleyball WOW! THE 2015 VOLLEYBALL SEASON WAS AN EXCITING one this year. In 10 years of coaching here, I think it was one of the most exciting years we have had. This year we had a mix of youth and seniors who came together and produced. It was a lot of fun watching the team come together and mature and play toplevel volleyball. Junior Whitney Chappell was named to the AllConference Team. Sadly we have to say goodbye to some fabulous young ladies and our seniors all had a tremendous year. They were the backbone of such a positive year. Thank you for all you have done for Seton Keough volleyball: Jillian Boyd, Alana Matson, Kailah Charles, and Summer Fields. We wish you the best. — Coach SJ Greenway

Dear Friends of Seton Keough High School, During this time of the year, it is natural to pause, to count one’s blessings and to look toward a future full of hope. As a graduate of Archbishop Keough, I am grateful for the solid, holistic education that I received, which prepared me well for further study and meaningful work. I am sure that Seton and Seton Keough graduates can also recall experiences that prepared them well to face the world about them. Because of the support we received from families, teachers and others who believed in our potential, we were able to develop academically, spiritually, physically and socially. That tradition is alive today at Seton Keough because of the support of donors and friends like you. Recently the school was awarded a grant from the Knott Foundation to upgrade the technology used daily by the students and staff. Recent upgrades to the lighting make the school brighter and more cheerful. The auditorium has gone through a series of upgrades that enhance liturgical and theatrical experiences. The commitment to provide an effective learning environment for the students continues. Recently Seton Keough hosted a well-attended Open House for future students and their families. Current students showcased their talents and conducted tours for the guests. If you know current eighth graders who would do well here, encourage them to apply. It will be a blessing for them to experience the bond of sisterhood that the school can offer. It will be a blessing for them to develop into women of honor. I thank you for the ways in which you have supported the mission of Seton Keough. I hope you will continue your generous kindness to the young women who follow in our footsteps. I encourage you to be an ambassador for this school, which has shaped the lives of so many of us. May God bless you and your loved ones throughout the days ahead.

Remembering Mrs. Marge Kenney LAST JUNE, SETON KEOUGH LOST ONE OF ITS MOST beloved teachers, Marge Kenney, a teacher at Archbishop Keough High School and Seton Keough High School from 1972 to 2013. Because Marge was an English teacher who inspired thousands of students to love literature, the school would like to name the library in her honor. The school has launched a campaign to raise money for improvements for the library in order to rename it the Margaret Kenney Memorial Media Center. The goal is to raise $20K. We are nearly half way to the goal now due to the generosity of many donors who gave in her memory. The dedication ceremony will be held in late spring, TBA. If you would like to contribute to keep Marge’s memory and legacy alive, please consider a donation to the Library Campaign. Please contact Director of Institutional Advancement, Mary Henry with questions: 410-646-4444.

Seton High School Alumnae Spotlight April Ryan S’85 A White House Correspondent for American Urban Radio APRIL RYAN S’85 HAS BEEN THE WHITE HOUSE correspondent for American Urban Radio since 1997. In February of 2015, her first book was published “The Presidency in Black and White: My Up-Close View of Three Presidents and Race in America.” Ms. Ryan grew up in Baltimore and after graduating from St. Matthew’s elementary school in Loch Raven attended Seton High School. She is still connected to many of her classmates and regularly attends her reunions—although she missed the last one in 2015 because of her work schedule. After her graduation from Seton, she attended Morgan State University and majored in journalism. She said she was drawn to her major because she is “newsie” and “always interested in getting to the bottom of things.” She wanted to work in radio and television and interned at WJZ-TV and worked for several area stations including WXYV-FM and Baltimore Cable before leaving Baltimore for DC and working for WTOP. In 1997, she became the White House correspondent for American Urban Radio, which is the only African American owned radio network in the US. “I am five generations removed from slavery on my mother’s side and to be able to walk into the White House and have the President of the United States know you and call you by name is an awesome responsibility,” she said. “Sometimes the questions you ask can have an impact on discussions about a bill or policy.” She has to be at the White House regularly for meetings and briefings, in addition to being a regular on NBC. She also writes a news blog “Fabric of America” and recently became a contributing writer for Essence magazine. Friends of her encouraged her to write a book about covering the White House from her unique perspective. “The Presidency in Black and White” covers issues regarding race during the presidencies of Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, and Barack Obama. According to her website: “Ryan has been credited by a White House historian as having the most radio interviews with then President Bill Clinton during his White House years.” The book has taken off. She said usually a book such as hers has attention for about three months; hers is still going strong after nearly a year. The book’s theme of race relations at the center of power has hit a nerve with the Black Lives Matter movement. When she isn’t at the White House working or tending to her two daughters she is on tour with her book.

Archbishop Keough High School Alumnae Spotlight Rosa Cruz Penafiel K’88 Archbishop Keough Alumna Connects Seton Keough with Local Technology Initiatives A MEMBER OF THE LAST GRADUATING CLASS OF Archbishop Keough, Rosa Cruz Penafiel, K’88 gives back to Seton Keough by connecting the school with the local business community. As the Director of Communications and Marketing for the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation, she works with technology companies and entrepreneurs in Anne Arundel County and sees the need for more women in STEM careers. Rosa attended the Ascension School in Halethorpe kindergarten through grade eight. When it was time to find a high school she was attracted to Archbishop Keough’s size and academic reputation. “I wanted something more progressive; the school had a modular schedule, independent study, and many activities,” she said. While at Keough she was involved with the literary club, forensics, and theatre. She recently donated to the mini-campaign to raise money for a new soundboard, “I spent a lot of time in that auditorium,” she said. Rosa was most interested in English and history but also loved math because of the instruction of popular math teacher Mr. Julian Forrest. In fact, she said the teachers at Archbishop Keough were excellent in and out of the classroom. Many of them were quite proud of their college alma maters and began to discuss options with the students during their freshman and sophomore years. “They were mentors as well as teachers,” she said. Upon her graduation from Archbishop Keough, Rosa attended Boston University, majoring in business but she was drawn back to the DC area because of her interest in journalism and politics. She transferred to George Mason University in Fairfax, VA and majored in International Relations. After George Mason she attended American University in Washington, DC and earned her masters degree in Public Affairs. Upon her graduation she was offered a job at ESPN in Connecticut as a production assistant— selecting and producing the highlights for several broadcasts including SportsCenter, ESPNews, and Sunday NFL Countdown. She spent several years working in the TV news industry as a producer in DC, Richmond, and back in Baltimore before leaving to work for the State of Maryland. She was there for 10 years and then moved onto the Anne Arundel Economic Development Corporation. About five years ago, Rosa was recruited to be on the Advancement Committee. Her involvement there led her to join the leadership of the Archbishop Keough Alumnae Association.

She reminds everyone what President Donna Bridickas says about giving back: “Donate your time, your treasure, and your talent.” Rosa sees how important it is to connect Seton Keough’s outstanding PLTW® STEM biomedical and engineering program to the outside community. “Part of what I do with groups that I belong to like the Chesapeake Regional Technology Council is meet with local business owners and entrepreneurs and discuss how to get more girls interested in STEM careers. I saw that I could best serve Seton Keough by making these type of connections,” she said. In the spring of 2014, she played a key role in seeing that Seton Keough was selected as the host for the Girls in Tech weekend, which provided an opportunity for elementary, middle, and high school girls to explore technology and learn more about computer programming.

“We cannot have gender-equality conversations without it starting with developing young women in schools like Seton Keough.” “I work with local women business leaders and we see a need for more women in certain industries,” she said. She would love to see Seton Keough add a computer-programming strand to its curriculum. She said that discussions about increasing the number of women in technology careers needs to include connecting excellent, all-girls schools such as Seton Keough to real-world opportunities in science and technology. “We cannot have genderequality conversations without it starting with developing young women in schools like Seton Keough,” she said.

Seton Keough High School Alumnae Spotlight A graduate of the University of Maryland’s A. James Clark School of Engineering, and a fellow working on her PhD at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography A 2011 GRADUATE OF SETON KEOUGH HIGH SCHOOL, Rebecca is now a National Science Foundation graduate fellow in a PhD program at the University of Rhode Island Graduate School of Oceanography. As a graduate student, she is conducting research on ocean acidification and its effects on food webs in coastal areas. As part of her degree, she will be scuba diving, going on research cruises, and doing field work in the Narragansett Bay. Rebecca notes that she has always been fascinated by the ocean and how it challenges living systems. “We depend on the ocean for so much, but know so little about what’s under the surface! With my bioengineering degree (undergrad) I wanted to learn more about how we are impacting the ocean and what it can teach us.” After graduating from Seton Keough, Rebecca attended the University of Maryland, College Park, where she majored in Bioengineering with a minor in International Engineering. She didn’t miss a beat transitioning from high school to college, and began to find her place among thousands of fellow undergrads. Rebecca joined both the Digital Cultures and Creativity Honors Colleges and the Engineering Honors Program. She was the community service chair for Tau Beta Pi, the engineering honor society, and she participated in many intramural sports, including soccer and flag football. She also studied abroad in Madrid, Spain and spent a summer in Pohang, South Korea doing marine biomaterials research. In the spring of her senior year, Rebecca received the Fischell Department of Bioengineering Outstanding Research Award, recognizing her for significant contributions to research, the department and the field of bioengineering. Her summers proved equally as exciting, as she worked at the NASA Ames Research Center as part of the Space Life Sciences Training Program in the summer of 2014 and 2015. She performed research in the Bone and Signaling Lab on the effects of spaceflight and exercise on bone loss in 2014 and continued with the program as a student coordinator this past summer. Of her time at Seton Keough, Rebecca reflects, “The science department at Seton Keough had the biggest impact on shaping what I studied in college and gave me a solid foundation for my graduate degree. In addition, being a member of the band and sports teams helped keep me sane throughout my college 26
