A Winter Market Takeaway
Trips to markets are all about paying attention to new trends, whether it is a color, style, product, or idea. My experience earlier this year was no different.
As my colleague Andrea and I made our way through buildings and visited vendors whose products are a good fit with our brand, we noticed several things.
Among the trends that stood out to us was the number of sensory/emotional support products for children — from books and stuffed animals to figurines and more. All of them were about helping youngsters express their emotions.
Thinking back to the books I purchased last year for parents-to-be, many of them were stories that featured animals learning to celebrate their differences and what makes each of them unique.
In those instances, I was drawn to both the words and the illustrations. In subtle ways, these types of books can teach children how to be kind and that it is OK to not feel happy all the time. That is a good thing and a change from the era in which I grew up.
It was more common back then for parents to say, “Little children should be seen and not heard.” And that was especially the case when they were entertaining their friends — although for me, I have fond memories of talking to my parents’ friends when they visited.
With more awareness and conversations these days about mental health, it should come as no surprise that we are seeing these types of products on the market for children. They reflect a new approach to the topic.
A few weeks after my Market trip, I saw a woman I became acquainted with through my former involvement in a community organization. We tried to remember when we had last talked and figured it was before the pandemic.
She and her husband were expecting their first child back then. Their son is turning 4. As we caught up with each other, she openly talked about anxiety, perinatal mental health, and therapy. I took the opportunity to tell her about the products I saw for children at Market.
I soon heard the names of books and television programs related to the theme of children’s emotional health. And she excitedly shared details about the school they hope their son attends.
It was a refreshing conversation. In the months ahead, I look forward to seeing how this trend plays out at the gift shops I visit.

One of my goals this year is improving my human relationship efforts within my store. What tips can you offer a small retail operator with a lean budget and lean time?
Time and time again, we hear retail leaders express their struggles with “getting it all done.” And that definitely includes nurturing the relationships of those who work within their stores, those who visit their stores, and even those who support their stores.
As the new year is in full swing, it is great you have recognized elevating human relationships— aka employees, customers, and even external partners — as a priority you want to strengthen. That alone is the first step to achieving this change. But beyond that, consider the following tips.
For Employees: Allocate Time To Evaluate Schedules, Performance, Concerns, and More
Setting expectations with your time is key to actually being available to achieve this goal. If your typical work week is Tuesday through Sunday, identify a time at the start of your week that is spent supporting employee relationships and details.
During this time, it is important you get what you need to do done, such as scheduling hours for each employee. However, also consider how you can nurture communicating to your team.
For example, maybe you highlight one employee each week for a job well done in the past week. It can be as simple as them having received a compliment from a customer and making sure they know you heard it or sharing a positive attribute of their hard-working efforts, so your collective team understands this is something you value.
Additionally, encourage your team to speak up and share their thoughts, concerns, ideas, and more by inviting them to meet one-on-one no less than quarterly, even if it is only a quick coffee break together. For smaller retailers, this is a perk to truly lean into since you typically have less employees to schedule one-onone time with.
Finally, carve out time for social experiences that do not break your budget by welcoming employees to do a potluck lunch together, a cookie exchange, or even a festive dress-up day at the store. Creating peer-to-peer experiences is the goal.
For Customers: Encourage Employee-Customer Conversations To Heighten Understanding
Here is the honest truth… not every customer wants to chat with you. However, those who do genuinely enjoy it when you take the time to talk to them.
Teach your employees how to do this more effectively by having a role-play scenario with each other, acting out past customer scenarios, and working together to identify the best ways to manage them. If you have a space in your store — even on the wall of an employee-only restroom — consider offering best practices for communication to help boost customer-employee engagement.
One example is communication should be concise and courteous, which allows for respect of the customer’s interest of time. If they show a relaxed willingness to want to talk more, then this welcomes your team to converse with them more directly and at length.
Possibly, it is you having these conversations as well. Either way, the idea is to be friendly, to ask consumer-centric questions, and to make them feel like you genuinely care. Let’s face it — this is something big-box stores simply cannot compete with.
For External Partners: Show Gratitude for Support Anyone Offers
A simple thank you goes a long way. But letting a business vendor partner know exactly how they positively support you offers a heightened level of clarity they may not know otherwise.
Whether it is your parcel provider, local mail carrier, insurance broker, or next-door neighbor express gratitude whenever you can. Then pause. Truly.
It is easy to stay busy and want to keep getting things done in your store when the person who walks in is not a customer. But giving them your undivided attention goes a long way. Ask how their day is… it does not have to be overly complicated.
Over time, this absolutely strengthens their care about you and your store. That is a nice bonus to also having a more meaningful relationship with someone who supports your business.
Finally, allow yourself the time to want to strengthen these relationships. The mental shift of doing this is likely the root cause of why it has not happened before.
Operating a store undoubtedly gets busy at times. But remember, it is the people who bring your store to life… and also keep it alive.

WHICH COMPANIES DO YOU CARRY?
We know store owners can easily find a lot of the same wonderful companies at many of the other warehouses. So, we strive to offer our customers something different: assorted products from different vendors, many of which are handcrafted and unique products or select imports.
As such, many of our vendors are exclusive to CMM and are smallbusiness owners and artists who offer unique handmade items and who can bring in new product lines all the time. We also stock our shelves with a variety of products from several nationally recognized companies, such as CWI, JanMichaels Art and Home, MeraVic, PD Home & Garden, Transpac, and Tellon.
We currently carry product lines from at least 50 different vendors, with new vendors regularly joining CMM. A list of our current vendors can be found on our website.

The dates are subject to change. Shoppers should confirm Market dates on our website.
WHAT ELSE SHOULD STORE OWNERS KNOW BEFORE THEY ARRIVE?
We strive to offer a personalized shopping experience focused on the needs of our customers. Our products are carefully tagged, organized, and staged.
In fact, we offer a variety of theme rooms, such as pets, nautical, seasonal, floral, etc., featuring many of our vendors’ items organized by category in one area. In addition to making it easier to find categories of products, store owners might find it helpful to see items staged in theme rooms to give them more ideas for their own store displays.
In addition to the traditional cash & carry experience, we are pleased to also offer preordering of products to our customers. With all our products clearly tagged/priced, a store owner can call weeks ahead of their planned visit and request a product from its tag (or by its description).
CMM will work with the vendor to try to fulfill the request and see if the product can be available and waiting for the customer when they plan to come shop in the future. CMM and our vendors do their best to meet a customer’s needs.

Supporting Multiple Personalities
How To Manage the Many Characters of Store Associates
BY NICOLE LEINBACHHave you ever struggled with how to manage multiple employees who have nothing in common? Do you ever wonder why one employee responds positively to one thing and another responds in the exact opposite way?
Are you often at a loss for words to figure out how to communicate effectively with each unique employee who works for you?
The reality is it can be hard to manage one person let alone multiple people. Factor in the variations that make each individual one-of-a-kind, and it can become even more complicated to take a one-solution approach to manage multiple store associates. Keeping this in mind, there is good news… and bad news… to consider.
The good news? Many attributes of employee management can cross generations and personalities alike, so that is something you have on your side.
The bad news? Not all folks react the same, which means your efforts will always have faults.
The positive upside to all this? There are ways to help support the many personalities stores have when managing associates.
Understanding Personalities Among Employees
Collaboration is essential in any professional environment, and we would be biased — though honest — to say this is especially true in retail. Retail brings together unexpected strangers in environments that aim to welcome them to interact at leisure.
Yet these same strangers may often collide in other circumstances. So, how do retailers overcome the challenges that may come with this?
The first key to managing personalities of all kinds is to recognize being different is OK. In fact, it is great.
But without diving into the details of anyone’s differences, the real key is to identify that working together is critical to respecting the differences of every individual. For example, some people are morning folks, with vibrant, ready-to-go attitudes for a great day, while others prefer to ease into the afternoon or even evening before they tend to shine brighter.
Mailchimp, a marketing platform that aims to connect businesses to consumers through digital marketing efforts, identifies workplaces as having 10 different types of employees. Here they are:
1. The Analyst: This employee tends to prefer solo projects and aims to find solutions through data and other practical factors.
2. The Leader: Essential to most work environments, leaders tend to be organized and deliver leadership through both actions and communication to keep teams moving positively in a forward direction.
3. The Logician: While these employees often lack social cues and need support to work as a team, they excel at analytical thinking, which can benefit many businesses. But it is up to leaders to identify if it is right for their environment.
4. The Logistician: All about following order, logisticians value team players and often discredit others who do not meet goals set for a company… which can also mean they are likely to encourage others to stay on track with deadlines.
5. The Campaigner: This employee type is very sociable and friendly, often becoming a key associate for retailers because they connect so easily with others and bring a lot of positive energy to the environment.
6. The Advocate: Personalities that demonstrate advocates are very loyal, hard-working, and dedicated to long-term goals — both individually as well as in combination with others.
7. The Debater: Good or bad, having a debater on your team can bring other perspectives to light and help challenge new efforts in various work scenarios.
8. The Executive: Folks who identify as executives are career-oriented with ambitious goals, and this includes working diligently to climb their professional ladder successfully.
9. The Entrepreneur: Risk takers at heart, entrepreneurs are always brainstorming new ways to get things done or offer new products or services to enhance business goals.
10. The Mediator: Often introverted, mediators try solving problems to avoid work chaos and can be a beneficial personality for stores to welcome to their team.
Benefits of Multiple Personalities on a Retail Team
Having clarity about the types of work personalities that exist can allow store owners and operators to better support their collective team. In doing so, they can identify store responsibilities that would benefit from their characteristic strengths – and when possible, avoid those responsibilities that are not in their favor.
This is not always possible. However, understanding what employees prefer, naturally excel at, and are challenged by can give leaders the chance to better distribute store roles.
Additionally, assessing personalities does not just lead to clarity of employee behavior, it also offers retailers the chance to be more cost-effective in their training efforts, more supportive in their employee management, and more beneficial in their productivity planning. Additional benefits of understanding the personalities of your employees include:
• Enhanced conflict resolution.
• Encouraged work diversity.
• Empathy of others.
Finally, once you recognize team members are not cookie cutter replicas of each other, it is easier to move forward in a positive direction of supporting each of them. This may be even easier for you if you challenge your employees to identify who they think they are on this list of employee personality types.
Then collaborate with them to identify goals they have for themselves to best support you as a store operator. Ways to do this could include asking them what they identify as their professional strengths and what they identify as their professional weakness.
Knowing these details can then offer you the chance to nurture both sides of this equation, as well as offer you the chance to best identify a team that can work together despite their multiple personalities.

COVID-19 Still Affecting Retail
Four years ago this month, COVID-19 quarantines began across the country and the world. While it seems like much of everyday life has returned to normal, Daphne Howland, writing on retaildive.com, points out several ways the pandemic continues to have an impact on retail:
• The effect of work-at-home and hybrid workplaces. This has meant a decline in foot traffic at downtown retailers and those near corporate settings, and an increase in shopping at more local and suburban retailers.
• The continued popularity of e-commerce. While online sales have decreased from their pandemic highs, growth in e-commerce sales will continue to be strong. Consumers got used to the ease of ordering online, and one analyst pointed out many retailers also worked to make improvements to their shopping sites, focusing on “engaging customer experiences.”
• In a similar vein, the increased use of BOPIS (buy online, pick up in store). While the practice got a surge from customers looking for contactless shopping during COVID-19, it has continued to be popular for its convenience. However, it is also labor-intensive for larger retailers, and many are looking to cut back on it.
• Uneven supply chains continue to be an issue, resulting in either low inventories or overstocks where retailers ordered extra to ensure they had merchandise on hand.
A Pinterest Peak Into the Future
If you are looking for fun trend-spotting ideas, you may want to take a spin through Pinterest’s annual report, Pinterest Predicts. The company collects patterns in user searches and presents the top ones in a bubbly online format, along with the trending search terms that earned them a high ranking.
Among the next big things (according to Pinterest searches, anyway) are:
• Western Gothic décor that mixes “vintage Americana chic with deep moody hues.”
• “Kitschens” that show off vibrant candy colors, vintage appliances, and kitschy, thrifted accessories.
• “Inchstones,” mini-celebrations for children’s lesser-celebrated milestones, such as a first tooth or a baby-naming ceremony.
• Cafécore, that will “bring the coffee shop vibe inside,” with fancy at-home coffee stations, stylish equipment, and artsy chalkboards, presumably to list the brews of the day.
See more — including “Eclectic Grandpa,” “Tropic Like It’s Hot,” and “Bow Stacking” at https://bit.ly/4bj7B5D.
“Investing in experience creates interactions that draw in customers repeatedly. When customers know they can expect frictionless, personalized, and convenient experiences from a retailer, they may be less likely to check out the competition.”

Slogans for Success
Do you have a rallying cry?
Management consultant and author Paul Thornton does. Writing on smartbrief.com, Thornton defines the term as a short word or phrase that is “a quick reminder of what you believe needs to be done to achieve your goals.” Think along the lines of “Just do it.”
A good rallying cry, Thornton says, keeps you focused and motivates you to move forward. It should be short, emotional, actionable, memorable, and, of course, something you genuinely believe. He notes some business leaders even post their slogans in their workplace or break room.
Some examples? For the start of 2024, Thornton invited readers to send in their own rallying cries. See examples at https://bit.ly/3OuWJYu. Among the contributions were:
• “Keep marching!”
• “Grow on purpose!”
• “Add value.” (Thornton’s own)
• “Community. Connection. Compassion.”
• “Finish what you start.”
Big Boxes, Small Formats
As shopping malls continue to struggle to attract shoppers, some big-box retailers and department stores continue to explore new formats in new neighborhoods.
For example, Macy’s announced in October it was opening 30 smaller stores in strip malls over the next two years. Target started opening smaller stores in 2019. The Container Store planned to open nine new small-format stores by this spring.
The smaller formats fit into neighborhoods and shopping areas where larger stores have not been possible, such as urban neighborhoods or growing suburban areas, where the retailers might not have had a presence previously. “Many of these retailers have shifted into being closer to these larger population areas where shoppers are just naturally already going,” one retail analyst told modernretail.com. Retailers can also pare inventories (and some offer a more limited selection of products or departments) and staff.
NRF Launches Sustainability Initiative
As consumers look for more ways to incorporate sustainable living practices into their everyday lives, the National Retail Federation is addressing the issue on an industry-wide scale.
Late last year, the organization launched the NRF Center for Retail Sustainability, an initiative “to support retailers’ commitments to create net positive environmental, social, and community benefits while generating economic value.” The group will highlight retail sustainability efforts and provide resources for NRF members; it will also work to make it easier for consumers to find high-quality and affordable sustainable products.
The center will focus on several areas, such as the retailer’s role in the circular economy, including recycling efforts, waste reduction, merchandise made from recycled materials, and sales of refurbished products. The group will also examine consumer behavior to determine how consumers understand sustainability and what is most important to them. Also under study: improving sustainability options and practices within supply chains.

How To Promote Your American-Made Products
In today’s market, more shoppers are expressing a desire to buy items that are made locally or merchandise that is “Made in the USA.” How can we best support (visually) efforts to promote products made domestically?
It might be an annual celebration around July 4th, where items made in the United States are front and center for several weeks. Likewise, it might be your goal to feature these items in an intentional fashion year-round.
Options could include special signage on items as they are displayed throughout the store or the creation of a dedicated fixture or zone, with all related merchandise in a single location. Personally, I prefer the idea of a dedicated location (not a fan of scattering, per se). Yet, that is not necessarily practical for everyone.
And, if done well, the scattering method can help lead shoppers through the store. This is your call. What is imperative is ensuring consistency across the props and signage in use.
Made in America
How do we promote the advantages of buying items made in the United States? Here are a few ways:
1. You are helping drive the nation’s economy.
2. You are avoiding supply chain issues from overseas shipping.
3. You are supporting your neighbors, colleagues, and artists.
For many shoppers, this is a win-win. We need to make it easy for them to find the products and learn the stories behind the merchandise
As I conducted research for this article, approaches tended to fall into one of two categories — flags or maps. One is flat, the other one flies, and there are a myriad of opportunities to adapt them for customer engagement — and sales.
Some of the better-known décor specialists offer Americana items that lean toward rustic. This is an excellent way to utilize reclaimed lumber, fencing, or pallets. Think barns and amber waves of grain, and yes, barrels and wheat sheaves work well in this setting.
If you choose to use the U.S. flag, please acquaint yourself with the proper ways to display it. The symbol comes with rules for hanging, wear and tear, and even the proper way to dispose of it when the flag can no longer fly in public. To overlook or abuse any of the guidelines would have the opposite effect of promoting sales.
Consider Other Techniques
You might also choose to reinterpret the U.S. flag by means of varied materials — the stars and stripes — not necessarily reproducing them exactly but in proper proportion, etc. One of my favorite uses of this technique was executed by Create Exchange, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
The owner, Jennifer Stewart, provided behind-the-scenes information. “I made the flag specifically as part of a July/patriotic window display. It is 4 x 6 feet, strung on twine. My store is a second-hand arts and crafts supply store,” she said. “Most items used in window displays, including the flag, are made from store inventory as a way to show customers how to use materials that otherwise may have been thrown away. Materials used for this project are cotton fabric, lace trim, and specialty yarns. All the strips are attached to a length of twine. So even though it’s heavy, it’s easy to hang up and easy to store.”
What a perfect way to promote one’s business! In this instance, she is literally using what she sells to promote the store — arts and craft supplies. She is inspiring creativity and driving sales!
I have also seen flag motifs recreated from flowers, red/ white/blue sneakers, upholstery swatches, bottle caps, and yarn. The possibilities are endless.
If flag use is not the desired design approach, I recommend maps. Whether small, large, analog or, digital, they can outline the United States as a nation or outline a state or region of origin. They serve as a way to better educate the shopper.
This could then tap into nostalgia (hometown? favorite vacation spot?) or perhaps your bucket list. Maps with pins or other markers are also a terrific way to connect with your shoppers and demonstrate the breadth of your customer base.
You might choose to use a map for tracking the path — or timeline — of a product or a craft tradition. I am thinking about weaving, carving, and other regional or historical arts/ artifacts.
Again, engage the shopper. Explain and educate. And whether it works best to consolidate or distribute your USAmade items, I salute your efforts!

Bittersweet Blessings
A Country, Primitive Shop in a Small, Rural Town
Alayoff from her job when she was 8 ½ months pregnant resulted in Michelle Hatch deciding to open a country shop in the lower level of a split home.
“I want everyone who walks in the door to be able to leave their cares behind, even if only temporary, and live in the moment and be able to take a nice deep breath and find their Zen.”
“As you can imagine, it is very difficult to try and find a job at 8 ½ months pregnant, so I decided that I would take some time and stay home with my newly arriving little one,” she said. After a few months of being home with her baby, Michelle realized she needed something to keep her brain stimulated. That is how Bittersweet Blessings came to be.
“When I was laid off and a new mom, I needed to find places where I could put my son in a front pack and walk around and be around other people. I always found myself gravitating to country primitive shops where I could browse and be inspired,” she said. “Once I realized that my happy places were all country primitive shops, I knew that was the type of shop and categories I wanted to open.”
Choosing a name for her gift shop proved to be easy. “All I kept thinking was something that was so hard (losing my job while pregnant) really turned into the best thing in my life. Losing my job gave me the opportunity to spend some wonderful quality time with my new little one at the beginning of our journey
together,” Michelle said. “It was then I realized that the stressful time of losing my job was truly a bittersweet blessing. As I started to think back through hard times in my life, I came to realize many things in life, while they always seem the hardest at the time, really can turn into wonderful opportunities and new beginnings.”
Bittersweet Blessings is in Chester, New Hampshire. The rural town has a population of about 5,000 and is one hour from the Atlantic Ocean, mountains, and Boston.
“We consider our location to be one of our main features. New Hampshire is a tax-free state, and so many folks travel numerous states (and often from Canada) just to visit us. Since we are not in a tourist area, those folks that are coming to our shop are coming there to visit us and shop with us,” she said. “We are fortunate in this aspect because what this means is that those folks who walk through the door already know what we are about and what we have to offer them and know that we’re going to provide them with exceptional service. It is very rare for any customer to leave without a purchase of some sort.”
An Entrepreneurial Spirit
Michelle grew up with her father owning a construction business.
She majored in small-business management, moved into the tech world after graduating from college, and did small-business ventures on the side like making and selling quilts and blankets on eBay and later starting a jewelry business.
Her education and small-business endeavors helped her start Bittersweet Blessings after her layoff. She opened the gift shop in 2010, and after the first year, she knew she had the chance to make it a great business but needed more space.
The current 10,000-square-foot shop was purchased in 2012 and is owned by Michelle and her husband, Doug Patch. Situated on three acres in the center of Chester, it was built as a home in 1736 and has had numerous uses through the years.
“Choosing to make the leap from a tiny shop in the basement of a
home to a massive shop was a scary decision but one I knew would be the key to success,” she said. It was one of the shop’s turning points.
The building needed many updates and repairs, and the major renovations took place after Doug joined the business full time and brought the barn on the property back to its true self. “When you walk in the barn, you see the true features that the beautiful building was meant to display. Everyone who comes to the shop always comments on the barn and it being their favorite area,” Michelle said. “Starting in the month of July, we turn the barn into a winter wonderland with our Christmas in July events, and the customers always say it is their happy place.”
Tried and True
Bittersweet Blessings is full of country and primitive home décor items, including florals, jar candles, lighting, furniture, pottery, and textiles. Michelle said the best-selling categories are their handmade products. They work with more than 100 artists from throughout the country. Seasonal items are the store’s star products.
“I want everyone who walks in the door to be able to leave their cares behind, even if only temporary, and live in the moment and be able to take a nice deep breath and find their Zen,” she said of her shop’s atmosphere. “We have always stayed pretty tried and true to what we first carried when we opened.”
Their focus on items that are handmade and made in the United States distinguishes them from other shops in the area. “We are blessed to have a large location, so that gives us the space to focus on variety versus a niche market,” Michelle said.
Her advice to those who recently opened a shop is to focus on their own business. “Successful people never need to worry about what others are doing. Keep an eye on trends and differentiate yourself from others with great customer service and your own personal love of what you are selling. Join together with other local shops to make the community even larger,” she said.
Giving back to the community plays a huge role in happiness, and Bittersweet Blessings does so in numerous ways. This includes donating to school fundraisers and helping those in need each holiday season.
When asked what contributes to their success, Michelle said it is Doug, family members, and their employees. Doug’s business background in warehouse and shipping management helped them expand their online presence, with their website now being almost 50% of their overall business.
They have a thriving online business, offering in-store pickup for local customers, as well as shipping. Social media platforms are used for marketing, with the aim to drive people to the website and convert them into buyers.
Seasonal open houses and special events are held throughout the year. Christmas in July is one of the most popular events, but Michelle said their personal favorites are the customer appreciation evenings. “A few times a year, we open up at night, and we serve complimentary appetizers, samples of our dips, yummy beverages, and, of course, Doug’s famous popcorn, which he makes on-site for all of our events,” she said.
Michelle said owning a business is not easy. “Doug and I have learned that taking time for us as often as we can is beneficial at home and at work. We work hard, and we play hard as well,” she said.
