TAKING A SOUNDING

NAVIGATING BY BEEPS AND ECHOES An echo sounder, used to measure depth, emits sound impulses and records their echoes. The interval between each beep and its echo is translated into so many feet of depth on a dial (right); this reading can be compared with depth figures on a chart. It is particularly useful when the sea bottom is irregular and thus distinctive.
