Iamsotiredofmovieswhosethemeisthatif womenarecontrolled,theworldwouldbe perfect.

Themostrecentsuchmovieis“Don’tWorry Darling”(seereviewinthisissue).

SomeofyouknowthatIgrewuponafarmwith mymother,myauntandmysister.

Thefourofusdidallofthechores,which includedmilking,gardening,choppingand haulingwood,chasingescapedlivestock,killing venomoussnakes,haulingseveral50-poundbags offeedinaday,defendingthefarmanimals againstpredators(owls,hawks,coyotes),staying upallnightsavingananimal’slife,andlotsmore.

Thereweregoodtimesandsadtimes. Thingsneededrepairedattimes.

Whatwecouldnotfixwithbalingwireandduct tapeordidnotknowhowtofix,wehired someonetodoit.Thenwestoodby,asked questionsandlearnedmorefromwhoeverdid therepair.

Wedidnotcaretheirgender,raceormarital status,weonlycarediftheycouldfixwhatever wasbroken.

Notonce,notonesingletime,wasajobora chorelabeledgenderspecificnorwerewetold roleswehadtofillbecauseofourgender.

ThefewtoysmysisterandIhadcovered everythingfromracecarstodollstoartsupplies.

Jobsweredonebytheonemostsuitedforthe taskandwhohadprovenitbytryingachoreand doingthetaskwell.

Theonlythingthatmatteredwasourbrainsand ourabilities,andmysisterandIwereconstantly challengedtostretchandgrowbothofthose.

Wealsowereconstantlyreading,andthevalue ofeducationwasalwaysstressed.

Partofthateducationwaslearningthatnoone islessthannorshouldbetreatedaslessthan becauseofanything.

Eachofushasvalue,hassomethinguniqueto

contribute,andallhavetherighttothepursuitof happinessandofalifewelllived,definedand controlledbyourselves.

Myapologiestoourreadersforthe inconsistencythisyearoftheappearanceofour “Gems”columnthatfocusesonlocalnonprofits.

Thecolumnwasdesignedtohelpeducatethe public,whoisthesourceofdonations,aboutthe missionsaswellasthepeoplebehindthelocal nonprofitstohelpraiseawarenessofthemission andtoperhapscauseanincreaseindonations.

Whilesomeorganizationshavebeenwonderful inkeepinginterviewappointmentsandproviding informationinatimelymannersocolumnistKent VonDerVellencanmeetdeadlines,therehave beenseveralwhohaverepeatedlymissed interviewtimesordonotreturncallsoremails. That,ofcourse,istherightofanyorganization. However,Ifindthisveryconfusing.

Whensomeoneasksthepublicfordonationsor patronageandthendoesnotwantfreepublicity, itmakesnosense.Forthosewhodothat,we eitherremovethemfromourlistentirelyorput thembackattheendofthelist.

Unfortunately,duetodeadlines,ifsomeone repeatedlydoesnotshowupfororcancelsan interview,thatmeansthereisnotimetolineup andwriteaboutanothergroupand“Gems”does notrun.

Soherewego,revealingsomelittle-knownfacts aboutthemanbehindthemusic.

HewasbornatMedinaHospitalin1965.Medina wasstillmostlyfarmlandthen.Hegrewupin Homerville,justaroundthecornerfromwherehe nowlives.Hewasthemiddlechildsandwiched betweenanoldersister,Elizabeth,andayounger sister,Rozalind.

Hisfather,David,wasinthelivestockbusiness andhismother,Marilyn,wasasubstitute schoolteacher.

Hesaysthat,asaresult,hewasexposedtothe bestofbothworlds.

“Weweretaughttoworkhard,learnandtogive back,”Sigelsaid.

Everysummertherewasafamilyvacationwithan educationalcomponent.

Thefamilywoulddrivetoplacessuchas Gettysburgandexploreandlearnasmuchasthey could,withastopattheHersheyChocolateFactory inPennsylvaniaonthewaybacktoOhio.

AnotherfamilytripSigelfondlyremembersis atriptoNewOrleans.

“Wesoakedinthehistory,cultureand,of course,theamazingjazz,”Sigelrecalled. HetookmusiclessonsatOberlinCollege,and hisparentstookhimandhissisterstoconcerts andmuseums.

“IfondlyrememberwhentheMetropolitan OperawasontourandstoppedinCleveland. Mymothertookmetosomeamazing performanceswithfamoussingers.Isaw BeverlySillsinMassenet's"Thais"andagainin Donizetti's"DonPasquale,”heshared.

Flashforwardseveralyearsto1986,when SigelwasacceptedforaninternshipattheNew YorkCityOpera.

SomethingfewknowaboutSigel:Hewasan internforBeverlySills.

“Thatwasthesummerof1986.BeverlySills atthattimewasthegeneraldirector.Ihadthe opportunitytoworkrightinherofficeforthe entiresummer.Thatwasanamazing experience,”Sigelremembered.

HeaskedSillswhyshechosehimforthe internship.

Shetoldhimthathewastheonlyapplicant whowasnotanaspiringoperastarandher husbandhadcomefromOhio.

ItwouldbeSigel’sfirstdabblinginarts administration,layingthefoundationforwhat wastocomemanyyearslater.

EventhoughSigelwasgratefultohavebeen pickedfortheinternshipandwasmeetingalotof famouspeople,theinternshipwasunpaidandin NewYork.

Hehadtofindawaytopayhisway.Hegotajob ataclassicalmusicradiostationandwasthe gopherforthestation,wherehelearnedtobe readyforanything,alessonthatwouldservehim wellinthefuture.

Butwehavejumpedaheadofourselves,backto wherewewereinSigel’sstory.

WhileattendinghislastyearatBlackRiverHigh School,SigelattendedOberlinCollegeparttime, takingclassesinmedievalhistory.

Eventhoughitiscommontodaytoattendcollege whilefinishinghighschool,backthen,itwasonlya selectfewseniorswhowereallowedtodosoand thereweremanyrequirementstobemet.

ArestlessimpatiencewasgrowinginSigeland goingtocollegeparttimewasnotenoughtoquiet it.

Sigelfoundhewasfinishedwithhighschool beforeitwasfinishedwithhim.HehadThingstoDo andhadfulfilledallofthecreditrequirementsin ordertograduate,exceptforonepeskyEnglish class.

Hedidnotexactlyletthatstandinhisway.He appliedforaconditionalacceptancetoOberlin College,whichmeanttheywouldlethiminwithout ahighschooldiploma.Theyallowedit,withstrict requirementsattached,soinwhatwouldhave beentheJanuaryofhissenioryear,itwas,instead, hisfirstfull-timesemesteratOberlinCollege.

Hisfocuswasonpoliticalscience(called governmentbackthen)andcomparativepolitics, withafocusontheSovietUnionandaminorin Russian.

So,anotherpieceofSigel’slifefewknew: Technically,hewasahighschooldropout.

Followinghisfirstcollegesemester,Sigeldecided togrababackpackandtravelonhisownthrough Europeforthesummer.

Hewas18yearsold.

Hismotherwaslessthanthrilled.Keepinmind, thiswasbeforecellphones,theinternetandhome computers.Maintainingcontactwithsomeone backpackingacrossEuropeishardenoughnow withspottycellcoverage,backthenitwascloseto impossible.

AworriedMarilynSigelwantedtoknowexactly wherehersonwasgoingtobe.Aswithany obstacle,Sigelfoundawaythroughit.

“Mymotherwasn’tveryhappy,”saidSigel,“SoI madeupanitinerarytokeepherhappy.”

Inreality,Sigelhadnoideawherehewasgoingto goorhowlonghewasgoingtostaythere.Allhe knewwasthathewasgoingtogoandhewasgoing tobesomewhere.

Then,offhewentonhisgrandadventure,funded bymoneyhehadearnedworking.Hewasgonefor nineweeks.

Afterhistrip,hewasreadytosettledownonce againforcollegeandreturnedtoOberlinforayear. ThefollowingsummerSigelattendedanintensive summerRussianimmersionlanguageprogramat IndianaUniversity.

HefollowedthatwithparticipationintheOberlin JuniorYearAbroadprogram,wherehewasenrolled inthehonorspoliticalscienceandRussian languageprogramsattheUniversityofAberdeenin Scotland.

BeforereturningtoOberlinforthe1985fall semester,hestudiedRussianattheState PedagogicalInstituteofVolgogradinRussia.

AfterreturningtotheU.S.,hecontinuedhis studiesatOberlinCollegetoearnhisbachelor’sin

governmentwithaSovietstudiesminorinMay 2006.

ThenitwasofftotheUniversityofMichigan, whereheearnedhismaster’sinRussianandEast Europeanstudies,withafocusonpoliticaland economicinfrastructure.

Duringsummers,heworkedforacompanyasa tourmanagertakingAmericanstotheSovietUnion.

Anotherlittle-knownfact:Intwosummers,he made14tripstotheSovietUnionandOuter Mongolia.

AfterearninghisdegreefromMichigan,heapplied fortheMasterofBusinessAdministrationprogram attheUniversityofManchester,England,oneofthe premierprogramsinEuropeandoneofthefewthat existedatthattime,Sigelsaid.Hewonaspotinthe program,buthewassobusyatthetimethathe deferredtheprestigiousinvitationforayear.

Chuckling,Sigelsaidheendedupneverattending theuniversitybecausehewassobusyworkingin thekindofpositionshehadbeenplanningto obtainbyhavingadegreefromManchester.

Sigelhasworkedinanextensiverangeof positionsthatalwaysreliedonhisknowledgeof internationalbusinessandhiswillingnesstodive in,evenifhelackedexperience,suchaswhenhe acceptedaninternationalbankingpositionwiththe MidAmericanNationalBankinToledo.

LackofknowledgeisnotanobstaclethatSigel haseverbowedto.

Whileatthebank,helearnedaboutinternational currencies;co-ledcreditseminarsformajor internationalclients;andfoundedandedited “InternationalBankNotes,”abankpublication.

SigelworkedonfeasibilitystudiesforNorth Americancompanieswantingtocreatejoin venturesinthenewlyemergingcountriesfollowing thecollapseoftheSovietUnionforsuchthingsasa cerealproductionplantandcosmeticplantin Polandandatomatoprocessingplantin Uzbekistan.

Duringhiscareer,SigelhasworkedinOhio, MichiganandNewJerseyandinternationallyin England,PolandandtheCzechRepublic.

HeworkedforcompaniessuchasPearson,SouthWesternCollegePublishingandOknoConsulting Group.

AsSigelwatchedworldevents,however,he decidedtofocusmoreonEasternEurope.

“Ibecamedisillusionedbecausethingswere crumblinginEasternEurope,”hesaid,andhe wantedtogetinvolved.

ThenSigelsawanadforsomeonewith knowledgeofRussianandbanking.Thejobwas workingfortheOpenMediaResearchInstitute whichhadevolvedfromtheresearch/thinktankof RadioFreeEurope/RadioLiberty,whichwere establishedtobroadcastandpublishnewsto

Afewyearslater,hewaspoachedbyPearson EducationinNewJersey,eventuallyputtinghisreal estatelicenseinescrowandmovingtotheirbranch inEngland.

“Itwasanamazingexperience,”Sigelsaid, adding,“Iranmyselfintotheground.”

AnepiphanycameforSigelwhenanauthorhe wasworkingwithwasdiagnosedwithcancer.The authordidnotwanttospendthelastofhislife

Sigelwasburnedoutandtired.

HequitPearsonandleftforathree-weeklong safaritoexploreSouthAfricaandtheRepublicof Zambia,includingcanoeingtheZambeziRiver.

Whenhefeltrechargedandreadytofacethe worldagain,hereturnedtoLondonandstartedT. SigelConsulting/SigelPress.Heimmediatelyhad clientsbecauseofthestronginternational connectionshehadforgedovertheyears.

Afterhavingtraveledsomuchoftheworldand gainingsomuchexpertiseandinternational connections,itwastimeforSigeltoreturntoOhio.

Uponhisreturn,hesettledinMedinaand continuedtobuildhiscompany.Healsoreturnedto realestate.Hehadobtainedhislicensein1997and

hadputitinescrowwhileworkingoutofstateand internationally.

Yet,therewassomethingmissingandhisenergy waslookingforanoutlet.Itwouldsooncometo him.

Havingbeensoimmersedinart,musicand cultureallofhislife,Sigelwasdismayedtoseethat thosewereexactlytheprogramsthatwerebeing cutandunderfundedatschools.

Afterdeterminingnootherprogramswerefilling thegaps,Sigeldecidedtofindawaytohelpgive areachildrenthesameaccesstotheartsthathe hadenjoyed.

“Ihaveadeeppassionformusic,artsand culture,”Sigelsaid,“Theimpactoftheseprograms onchildren...it’snotaboutme,it’saboutthelasting impact.”

Sigelhadfoundhismission.Leaningonallofthe expertiseandknowledgehehadgainedthroughout histravelsandjobsandtheloveoftheartsinstilled byhisparents,hesoonhadcreatedORMACO.

ToSigel,itwastheperfectanswer.Through ORMACO,hecouldhelpartistsandmusicians presenttheirworkandbepaidandatthesame time,hecouldbringtheartstounderserved, disadvantagedandruralschoolchildrenthrough programsofferedbyORMACO.

Sigelalsocreatedataglinefortheorganizationto emphasizetheimportanceofthearts:Forwithout culture,manhasnosoul.

Bytheendof2019,nineyearsafter creatingORMACO,Sigelhadtakenit fromamerethoughttoanorganization offering75outreachprogramsto schoolchildrenineightOhiocounties, Hewastofind,however,thataswith mostinnovativeideas,fewunderstood whathewastryingtoaccomplish.

Likeeveryotherobstaclehehasfaced, Sigelhasneverletthisoneslowhim downeither.Hisdedicationtomaking theartsaccessibletoallhasnever wavered.

ORMACOhascontinuedtogrowand expandtheprogramsitoffers,toomany tolisthere,butthefollowingarea sample.

JazzandOperaUndertheStarsoffers performancesinUptownParkin Medina’sPublicSquareduringthe summerwithpeoplefromallover comingtoenjoythemusic,Sigelsaid.

TherearepartybusestoCleveland’s PlayhouseSquaresoadultscanenjoya livelytriptoseeaplaywithaboxlunch, wine,andcookiestoenjoyontheway.

Medina’sGarfieldSchoolstudentsare giventheopportunitytoparticipateina song-writingprogramandattend musicalperformances.

Inaddition,ORMACObringsinmusiciansfrom aroundtheworldforitsannualWorldTourofMusic, withmusiciansstayingwithlocalresidents.This makesforauniqueculturalexchangewith musiciansfromallaroundtheworld.

“Weembraceeverybody,”Sigelsaid. SigelhasconnectedORMACOtothePolice ActivitiesLeague(PALs),whichoffersafter-school activitieswithpoliceofficers.

Unfortunately,becauseSigeltriestoensure programsarefreeforpeopletoattendsoasto includeeveryone,thereisamisconceptionthatthe musiciansaredonatingtheirtime.

“That’sthechallengeoftheorganization,”Sigel said,addingthereisnotanotherorganization aroundthatdoeswhatORMACOdoes.

WhileSigelisafriendtomany,hehasneverbeen married.Hisinternationalcareerandfrequent locationchangesallowedlittletimetocultivatea lastingrelationship.Heseemssettledatlastin HomervilleandhasevenbecomeaHomer Townshiptrustee.

Sigelhasnevermarried,althoughhewasonce engaged.

“Sadly,Inevermarried.Iwasalwaysontheroad. Therehavebeenotherwomen,butalas,nothing thatworkedout,”Sigelshared.

Themostcommontacticofthesecrooksistonotevenactually haveavideo,justclaimtheydoandworkonthevictim’sfearsof aruinedreputationorjoblosstogetthemtopay.

Atfirst,hepaidbutthendecidedtotakeanothertactic.

Helethisemployer,familyandfriendsknowofthesituation andthenhecompletelyclosedhissocialmediaaccountsto avoidanyfurtherharassmentorscamming.

Thisisoneofmanyscamsandschemesthatarerampant throughsocialmedia,anditseemstohavegottenmuchworse sincetheCOVIDshutdownandre-openingofbusinesses.

Therealsowerescenesthatseemedliketheywere accidentallyleftin.SuchasthescenewhereAlicerealizesthe eggsintheeggcartonarejustemptyshells.Yet,thereareeggs inthefryingpaneverymorning.Excuseme?

Thestoryoveralldoessucceedinkeepingtheaudience engaged,mostlyoutofconfusion,andtheanswersattheendof themovieweredisappointing,itfeltalittletoomuchlikebeen theredonethat.

Whilethefocusandmessageofthemovieseemstobeall abouthowfarsomemenwillgotoachieveanidylliclifewith obedient,well-providedforwives,thereisasecondary message.

Inspiteofitsflawsanderraticdelivery,thismoviebringsinto considerationthelackofselfhoodthatwomenhadinthepast andcurrentlystillstrugglewithastheyfindawaytodefine themselvesthatincorporatescareersandhome.

Ihaveseenothercommentsonthismoviesayingthatitwas supposedtobewomenempowering.Wow.Really?Where?

Insteadofleadingthem,themajorgeneralturnedinthe instigators.Whilenoonewaseverprosecuted,itwas determinedbytheMcCormack-DicksteinCommitteethatthere hadbeendiscussion,planningandinvolvementbymajor financialbackers.

Asfarasthemoviegoes,therewasabsolutelynothingtolike aboutthismovie.Justwhenitseemstheremightbesome savinggrace,ittakesawildleftturnoflittlesenseandnovalue.

Thereisabsolutelynochemistryamongthoseportrayingthe characters.Theyputmeinmindofthoseholidayphotographs whereeveryoneissmilingbutsecondsbeforetheywere fightingtoothandnail.

Asbadasthismovieis,whatwastheabsolute,overthetop, mostterriblepartwastheportrayalbyChristianBaleofthe maincharacter,BurtBerendsen.

Bale’schoicetoportraythecharacterasaverypoorand overplayedversionoftheoldTVdetectiveColumbowas horriblyirritatingandmisplaced.

TheadditionofhavingBerendsenalsohaveaglasseyejustas ColumboactorPeterFalkdidinreallifewasunnecessary, includingtherepeatedscenesthatIcanonlyassumewere supposedtobehumorouswhentheglasseyewouldfallout.No onewaslaughinginthetheater.

Columboalreadywassomewhatofacharacterization,but Baletookittoalevelofridiculousnessthatwasnails-onchalkboardexcruciating.

Therestofthecastwasasifsomeonehadwalkedintoabar andcollectedwhomightbesittingthereorwhohadnothing elsetodoandwantedtopickupafewdollars.Anyrealtalentis wastedhereandalmostimpossibletofindaglimmerof.

Watchingthismoviehadallthefeelingofanawkwardcollege partythatnoonereallywantedtobeat.
