MONKEY JUNGLE – Escape on a jungle safari at this home to nearly 400 primates, most of them running free on this 30acre reserve. See the Java Monkey, a skilled diver in the wild that collects crabs and shellfish along the riverbanks and mangrove swamps at this one-of-a-kind zoological park. Thirty species of primates, including orangutans, apes, gibbons, and spider monkeys call Monkey Jungle home.

Go Wild in Florida! South Florida’s variety of wildlife is majestic. The Everglades and coral reefs along the coast are the year-round home to many interesting species. Florida is also the winter home to almost every kind of bird on the eastern seaboard. See below for descriptions of some of the animals that call Florida home!

Alligators: These native animals are important to the Everglades for many reasons, including controlling the rodent population and keeping the wetlands wet during the dry season. Male alligators tend to be about 14-feet long, while females are closer to 10-feet when fully grown. The best place to see them is Everglades National Park.

Sea Turtles: Three main varieties of sea turtles nest in Florida: green sea turtles, leatherbacks, and loggerheads. All three are endangered species. Sea turtles navigate by using the magnetism of Earth, and Florida is home to the largest nesting ground for loggerheads in the U.S.! Their biggest threats include destruction of nesting grounds, entanglement in fishing nets, and floating garbage, such as plastic six-pack rings.

Sailfish: Sailfish are one of the most sought after game fish in the world, and can be found in plentiful numbers at the edge of the Gulf Stream, right here in South Florida.

Manatees: These gentle giants graze on plant life in canals and mangrove hammocks.

Like whales, they surface for air about every 20 minutes. Half their time is spent asleep, and their very slow metabolism keep manatees in warm areas. Manatees are no threat to humans and are often injured by boat propellers, so please be watchful for manatees while out on the water.

Florida Keys Home to America’s only living barrier coral reef, the Florida Keys stretch more than 200 miles; beginning with Virginia Key near Miami, and ending with the uninhabited Dry Tortugas to the south.

Postcard Inn Beach Resort and Marina (Mile Marker 84), self-proclaimed home of the Rum Runner cocktail. No visit to the Keys is complete without venturing all the way down U.S. 1 to Key West. Don’t miss the famous six-toed cats at the Ernest Hemingway Home and Museum, the Mel Fisher Maritime Heritage Museum (complete with treasure from sunken ships!), the Southernmost Point in the continental United States, and the adventures and nightlife of Duval Street!

In between is a chain of islands populated by equally colorful people, flora and fauna. To live in the Keys is to be a character — in the best way possible. Artists, musicians, fishermen and writers, from the famous to the infamous, have made their homes in the Florida Keys.

Key Largo, the largest of the Florida Keys, has beautiful resorts and is close to both John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park (102601 Overseas Hwy., Mile Marker 102.5) and the Florida Everglades, ideal spots for kayaking, snorkeling, diving and more!

There are plentiful opportunities to dive, snorkel, sail and laze around too. Watch the sun rise on one side of Key West and watch the sun set on the other — with so much to do in between. On your visit, don’t miss these popular points of interest: Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park & Beach, Key West Butterfly and Nature Conservatory, Key West Garden Club (all three at Mile Marker 0), Bahia Honda State Park (Mile Marker 37) and Crane Point Museum & Nature Center (Mile Marker 50).

Moving south, Islamorada, known as the Sport Fishing Capital of the World, is the perfect place to launch a fishing trip and take advantage of the plentiful game fish off its shores. The less energetic can lounge around at the World Famous Holiday Isle Tiki Bar at

South Florida’s Best Parks Spend some time outdoors in the Sunshine State!

NATIONAL PARKS Everglades National Park The Everglades is an expansive area of land in South Florida, consisting of 1.5 million acres of wetland. The largest subtropical wilderness in the U.S., this park has an unparalleled landscape that provides an important habitat for numerous rare, native and endangered species including alligators, manatees and the elusive Florida panther. Since the park covers such a large area of South Florida, planning ahead is a must. Begin your visit at Shark Valley Visitor Center, 36000 SW 8 St., Miami, Map U-1, then south, 305-221-8776.

Biscayne National Park:

A watery wonderland, with 95 percent of its 173,000 acres covered by water! Within sight of downtown Miami — yet worlds away — Biscayne National Park boasts numerous islands surrounded by aquamarine water and colorful coral reefs. Outdoors enthusiasts can boat, snorkel, camp, watch wildlife, or simply relax in a rocking chair gazing out over Biscayne Bay. Begin your visit at Dante Fascell Visitor Center Park, 9700 SW 328 St., Homestead, Map U-1, then south, 305-230-7275.

Additional information about national parks can be found online. www.nps.gov

STATE PARKS Bill Baggs Cape Florida State Park: Home to the historic Cape Florida Lighthouse, which was built in 1825, and is the oldest standing structure in Miami-Dade County today! Sunbathe, swim and picnic on more than one mile of sandy Atlantic Ocean beachfront, has ranked as one of America’s top beaches by “Dr. Beach” himself, Dr. Stephen Leatherman. Also enjoy kayaking and shoreline fishing at this park, located on the southern tip of Key Biscayne. At 1200 South Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne, Map M-12, 305-361-5811.

Oleta River State Park: Experience Florida’s largest urban park, located on Biscayne Bay in the busy Miami metropolitan area. Although it offers a variety of recreational opportunities, the park is best known for its miles of off-road bicycling trails, ranging in levels from novice to challenging. Take in a large stand of beautiful mangrove forest preserves with native South Florida plants and wildlife, while canoeing or kayaking to explore this amazing natural area. Swimming from a 1,200-foot sandy beach and saltwater fishing are also popular activities. At 3400 NE 163 St., North Miami Beach, Map C-13, 305-919-1844.

Hugh Taylor Birch State Park: A short walk from Fort Lauderdale’s bustling beachside shops and cafés, this park is an oasis of tropical hammocks. A gift to the state of Florida from Hugh Taylor Birch, this former estate is located between the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway and preserves four distinct natural communities . Visitors can rent a canoe and paddle along a mile-long freshwater lagoon or fish from the seawall. Nature lovers can hike along two short trails and learn about local plants and wildlife, while bicyclists and skaters glide along the paved park road. At 3109 E. Sunrise Blvd., Fort Lauderdale, Map A-14, then north, 954-564-4521. Journey Miami

Popular Miami-Dade County Beaches & Beach-Parks

• Haulover Park & Marina: This 99-acre urban beach-park has something for everyone, including a 1.5-mile stretch of beach, marina and a Bark Park for dogs — and it is one of the most popular surfing spots in Miami! Haulover Beach also consistently ranks as one of the top nude beaches in the U.S. There is a designated clothing-optional section at the northern 1/2-mile of beach, in the signed area only. At 10800 Collins Ave., Miami, Map D-14. • Lummus Park: This 74-acre urban beach-park, located in the Art Deco District, has been the backdrop for many TV shows and movies. This beachfront park is one of the most popular destinations in Miami and a must-see for any visitor. The 12th Street Beach is gayfriendly. At Ocean Drive, from 5-15 Streets, Miami Beach, Map I-13. • Miami Beach-Central: Miami Beach’s central stretch is popular for strolling, jogging and skating, with an elevated boardwalk that runs from 21-46 Streets. This stretch of beach tends to be quieter and less crowded than South Beach, yet is still perfect for soaking up the sun and swimming in the turquoise waters. At Ocean Drive, from 21-78 Streets, Miami Beach, Map H-13, G-14 and F-14. • North Shore Open Space Park: Enjoy crowd-free green spaces and lovely walking trails on the sand at this off-the-beaten-path space. This beach-park is a great alternative to some of the more popular beaches of the area. You won’t have to fight the crowds to find a spot to relax, unpack your picnic and become one with the beach! At Collins Avenue, from 78 Street-87 Terrace, Miami Beach, Map F-14. • South Beach: America’s party beach — and the place to see and be seen! This is the beach made famous on TV shows and in films, and on postcards and magazine covers. South Beach attracts a lively, colorful crowd of people who enjoy the energy of the place as much as the natural beauty. Stroll along the sand and see the brightly-colored lifeguard towers before making your way through the Art Deco District to see buildings in the Miami Modern (MiMo) style of architecture that Miami Beach is famous for. At Ocean Drive, from 5-21 Streets, Miami Beach, Map I-13. • South Pointe Park: Located at the southernmost tip of South Beach, this 17-acre urban beach-park has tremendous 360-degree ocean views, a large grassy area, walking paths and more. Explore the various ecosystems at Crandon Park, including dunes, mangroves and seagrass beds, and stop by the Crandon Park Nature Center to see exotic plants, rare fish and native wildlife. At 6747 Crandon Blvd., Key Biscayne, Map K-12. • Hobie Beach: Located just off the Rickenbacker Causeway is the preeminent place for windsurfing in all of Miami.
