he seasonal smells of balsam fir, salty sea spray and Christmas spirit all come together in Ogunquit from Dec. 9 to Dec. 11, as the town plays host to its annual Christmas by the Sea event. Ongoing activities include a candy cane hunt, during which participants can visit the shops around Perkins Cove to discover hidden candy canes. When found, track their locations in the event brochure and bring to the Ogunquit Welcome Center or the Taste the Season event to be entered to win Gift of Ogunquit gift certificates. Also ongoing is the sale of Love Four Paws “Love” earrings and necklaces, available for sale at Junebug’s Beach House, 16 Shore Road. All proceeds benefit local rescues. Support animals in need while holiday shopping. Treats will be served to people and dogs. A tentative schedule of events includes the following:

Arts & Crafts Show at the Fire Station on School Street. Proceeds benefit Ogunquit Fire Rescue. • 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.: Hay Rides at Veteran’s Park, weather permitting. Rides are $5 per person. • 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.: Taste the Season upstairs at the Dunaway Center, 23

Donations are encouraged to benefit the local local food pantry or animal shelter. VIP early admission begins at 11 a.m., $15 per person. Participants can enjoy a 20 percent discount storewide in addition to complimentary hors d’oeuvres and beverages.

• 1 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Open House at Ogunquit Heritage Museum on Obed’s Lane. On display will be holiday decorations, creches and menorahs. Refreshments will be served. • 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.: Holiday Story Hour downstairs at Ogunquit Baptist Church, 157 Shore Road. Seasonal stories will be read to the little ones. • 2 p.m. to 3 p.m.: Kids’ ornament and christmas card making downstairs at Ogunquit Baptist Church, 157 Shore Road. Saturday, Dec. 10 • 2 to 5 p.m.: Wine Tasting at Perkins & Perkins Wine & Cheese Shop, 478 Main St., wines for the holiday table and for holiday gifts. • 3 p.m. to 4 p.m.: Christmas Parade beginning at the entrance of Perkins Cove to Main Beach, presented by the Village Spirit Committee, weather permitting. Barbershop will be back by popular demand — not just a quartet, but a choir. Free admission.

Sunday, Dec. 11 • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.: Hay Rides at Veteran’s Park, weather permitting. Rides are $5 per person. • 11:30 a.m.: Ogunquit Ocean Rescue Polar Plunge at the Main Beach. Come support Toys for Tots and cheer on the Ogunquit Ocean Rescue Service as they brave the wintery elements. Members will plunge into the ocean in Polar Bear fashion with the hopes of ensuring a Merry Christmas for all. Bring unwrapped toys, donations, and plenty of good cheer. • Noon to 6 p.m.: Open House at a Victorian shinglestyle cottage by the sea, Rockmere Lodge, 150 Stearns Rd. See at least 15 different Christmas displays at the inn. Admission is $5 for those 14 and up; children 14 and under are free. Proceeds go to Animal Welfare Society. • 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. Open House at Ogunquit Heritage Museum on Obed’s Lane, displaying holiday decorations, creches and menorahs. Refreshments will be served.

This year’s theme is “Christmas Fun for Everyone,” so be sure to don your finest and most fun holiday apparel. The parade begins at 2 p.m. at Wells Plaza and heads north on U.S. Route 1 to Wells Junior High School. hristmas is coming. And Kennebunk plans to welcome in the holiday spirit early with an eventful lineup of festivities, hosted by the Kennebunk Downtown Committee. The 33rd annual Christmas in Kennebunk begins on Saturday, Nov. 26 downtown at 5 p.m., at which time Carolers of the Kennebunk High School Chamber Choir will perform, folks will be invited to skate with Santa and his elves at The Waterhouse Center, and Santa will light the Christmas tree in Downtown Plaza. Refreshments will be provided by merchants free of charge. There will be no

parking from 3 to 6 p.m. in the area of Water and Storer Streets, and north to Bourne Street. Main Street will close to traffic at 4:30 p.m. For more information, check out www.kennebunkmaine.us. Here, locals and travelers gather during the most joyous time of the year to embrace the Holiday cheer with bright lights, tasty treats, quaint crafts and many Christmas events. Since 1982, Kennebunkport’s Christmas Prelude has been held annually and remains one of the most popular events in Kennebunkport and southern Maine, even garnering awards from HGTV as one of the best Christmas Towns and celebrations in the United States. hat’s better than a parade and Santa to kick off the holiday season? There’s nothing better, Sanford folks agree, and so on Dec. 2, Holly Daze commences. At 5:30 p.m. that day, the parade steps off from the Lenox Street area and makes its way to the MidTown mall. But on the way, Santa, who will arrived on a horse drawn wagon at Central Park. Most years, the big guy in the red suit is accompanied by his wife, Mrs. Claus. The pair will be on hand for the tree lighting to follow. On Saturday, Dec. 3, volunteer Helen Hajny said there will be a number of

kid-themed events from 10 a.m. to 2 pm.
