Promise of print still alive at Serendipity Browse ‘til your heart’s content at the used book place By Emily Greenberg Journal Reporter

lassics, bestsellers, Pacific Northwest authors—you name it, they’ve probably got it. And if they don’t, they’ll find it. Serendipity, Friday Harbor’s only used bookstore, has titles pouring out of the shelves, 56,235 to be exact. All books are tracked by computerized inventory, but that’s the extent of technology at Serendipity. Co-owners Carol Jackson and Dilys Goodman are keen on keeping traditional print alive in the era of e-readers. “People are always saying, ‘I want a book I can hold in my hand,’” Jackson said. “People want to browse. You can’t open a book on the internet.” Jackson said she regularly talks with visitors who are ecstatic to find Serendipity, because the local used bookstore in their own town went out of business. The idea to open a used bookstore in 1995 was simple—there wasn’t one in Friday See SERENDIPITY, Page 2

Soroptimist: united in a common cause Bettering women’s lives isn’t always easy, Soroptimist just makes it look that way By Scott Rasmussen Journal editor

F

ounded 18 years ago to help better the cause of women in the community, Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor doesn’t necessarily immerse itself in the world of business. But that’s not a bad place to start, because improving the lives of women and the economic opportunities available to them often go hand-in-hand. “I’d say at least 10 to 15 of our members are either a full owner or co-owner of their own business, and there’s another 20 to 30 or so who work in a ‘professional’ capacity, like in banking or insurance, or in the legal field or in government,” 2014 Soroptimist President Sharon Pigman said. “And, there’s a lot of our members who are retired after having long careers in different professions, like the medical field or social work, attorneys, architects, teachers. There’s quite a diversity.” And, there’s quite a sphere of influence, too. Sponsor of numerous financial aid programs and yearly community service projects, and the benefactor of a host of annual scholarships and financial awards, Soroptimist champions, funds and partners in a wide-range of philanthropic causes, and promotes and puts its energy and muscle into a variety of civic activities. The list is as varied and familiar as it is long, including: transportation and financial assistance for cancer patients, a women’s emergency fund, Thanksgiving Day baskets, a free-trade coffee project, as well as participation in the Great Island Cleanup, the Knowledge Bowl, the Children’s Festival, working the gates and admission booths at the county fair and spearheading the ever-popular face-painting at the Pig War Picnic, to name a few. While its activities are many, the mission of Soroptimist is fairly simple and straightforward. It’s encapsulated in its name. Soroptimist is an amalgamation of the latin words for sister, “soror,” and for best, “optimus.” Or, as Pigman explains, “What’s best for women.” Still, working to better the lives of women and girls doesn’t necessarily come easy. It takes a good deal of time, effort, creativity and donations to ensure that both the demands of its service projects are met, and that the group’s financial-aid programs remain adequately endowed. Soroptimist strives to create fundraiser that are entertaining, like the annual St. Paddy’s Day Extravaganza or Bunko Party (the group devised the unique and comical “Kiss a Pig” contest as part of its participation in the 2010 Relay For Life event), as well as profitable. To date, those efforts have proven successful. And, Soroptimist is once again in the season of accepting applica-

tions for the financial awards it disperses to deserving candidates each year, the Violet Richardson Award, the Ruby Award, the Fellowship Award and the Live Your Dream Award (formerly the Women’s Opportunity Award). The group is also casting its collective eye beyond its current collection of projects, fundraisers and financial assistance programs and considering embarking on new territory. Long a supporter of the Family Resource Center and Domestic Violence and Sexual Assault Service, the group is researching what it might take to establish a more formalized partnership, or programs, with each. Pigman cites several reasons for why Soroptimist has been able to achieve what it has over the years. Beginning with 44 members back in 1996, the group now boasts more than 70 and, she said, there’s always room for more. Many hands make for lighter work. “I think the key is we work hard and that we like each other,” she said. “This is a community that comes out and supports each other and will dig in and get dirty when there’s work to be done. I think there’s a sense of obligation among our members to do just that, and a feeling of wanting to give back, too.” To find out more about Soroptimist International of Friday Harbor and programs, or for an application packet for financial awards, visit, www.sifri.org. Her ‘hands-on’ approach to wellness Amy Bienvenu aims to unlock the body’s potential through Rolfing

Dani Hoyer adds new energy as the “Windows and Doors” Specialist at Browne’s Home Center

Journal reporter

S

he made it all the way to Washington state from Cape Cod in her 20s, she speaks French, and survived living on a wooden boat for two Pacific Northwest winters. She’s also certified in a body realignment technique that you may not have heard of—Rolfing. “With all the body work I’ve done, Rolfing has provided me with the most satisfaction and effectiveness,” said Amy Bienvenu, owner of Island Wellness Center. “When your body doesn’t let you do what you want, it’s really frustrating.” Rolfing, a form of therapeutic manipulation of connective tissues in the body, is designed to relieve tension and discomfort, realign the body, and provide postural education. An integrated approach, these factors work toward an improved awareness of body and mind. The practice may sound New Age, but Bienvenu’s not a “wu-wu” practitioner, she said. She comes from a strong science background, with a degree in health sciences and a concentration in sports medicine from Alma College in Michigan. Her desire to practice wellness on others arose from healing her own injuries. In college, Bienvenu ran track & field, in the ‘80s and ‘90s she was a personal trainer and aerobics instructor. Her interest in fitness and healing related injuries has grown into a much more inclusive practice, not limited to athletes. “You never know who is going to walk in that door,” she said. “You get to read a mystery book everyday, trying to figure out where something comes from. It’s refreshing.” Bienvenu’s practice looks at the whole picture. It’s not just about bones and structure, she said, there’s an emotional component to how one moves and breathes. Her goal is to release tension and align the body, which promotes healing past trauma, and helps prevent future injury. At the forefront of the Rolfing philosophy is a heightened sense of awareness, which helps unlock the potential for an improved quality of life. In the midst of raising an energetic 5-year-old daughter, running her own business, and working together with her husband, sculptor Micajah Bienvenu, in their gallery at Cannery Landing, Bienvenu’s passion for wellness is insurmountable. “Looking at the body is like looking at architecture,” she said. “Like building a house, with Rolfing you have to start from the ground up.” Rolfing at Island Wellness Center works in a series of

several sessions. The first session begins at the feet, and eventually works up the body to the shoulders and neck. Bienvenu said she’s seen “textbook” transformations of clients from the first session to the last. Bienvenu hired licensed massage therapist, Maia Yip, at the Wellness Center in May, so Rolfing could be her main focus, and so she could have someone she trusts to meet clients needs. Bienvenu hopes to bring on a third alternative medicine professional, to compliment the center’s established practices. The Wellness Center is located at 470 Spring Street, Suite 103, offers a 10 percent discount to seniors and works with several insurance companies. “When you can stand with ease and balance it’s a sight to see,” she said.

Merchants in fun since 1993!

The Toy Box, San Juan Island’s toy store since 1993, continues to be all woman owned and operated. Featuring unique, fun merchandise for every age, the Toy Box offers a wide variety of puzzles, games, plush toys, art supplies, educational toys, dolls, and more. Owner Nancy Buechner moved to San Juan Island in the 90’s and saw that there was a great need for a store selling quality toys and supplies for all ages. The store was created in 1993 – and Buechner just celebrated her 21st anniversary in the toy business. Buechner notes, “I’m extremely proud of our staff members, and excited to continue supplying the island with fun and functional toys, games and supplies for our next twenty years!” Next to my love for toys, my passion is Soroptimist International, striving to improve the lives of women and girls locally and globally. Auto repair should never be a mystery! With ten years experience and two ASE Certifications, I am so pleased to offer my customers that education. I love getting to know my customers, too. In order to schedule vehicles, I have to accommodate the dates of family vacations, sports practices, work schedules, and doctor appointments. There is no “island-time” – everyone has a crazy life!
