Since Portia Ballard Espy arrived in Jackson from her native Louisiana, she’s hardly slowed down. Now the chief administrative officer for the Children’s Defense Fund, Espy has over 30 years of experience in community relations, civic engagement and governmental relations. A passionate volunteer, Espy has partnered with organizations such as Feed the Children, Habitat for Humanity and the Mississippi Association of Community Action Agencies. From 2005-2008, the Southern UniversityBaton Rouge alumnus served as a governor-appointed commissioner with the Mississippi Commission for Volunteer Service. In her role, she helped coordinate an annual day at the state capitol with key legislators. Among her hobbies, Espy enjoys genealogy research, traveling abroad, swimming and making jewelry.
