164 sets, 36,000 calls, 5 men - The tech behind l-Istrina Article By: di-ve.com news editorial@di-ve.com 36,000 telephone calls from 164 telephones, 18 TV’s, 17 ADSL installations and 3 VDSL installations formed the telecommunication setup behind L-Istrina event that was held on December 26 in Verdala. This installation took five people 400 hours to install and ran without a single glitch albeit the traffic in terms of connectivity. The man behind the GO Technical team at Verdala Charles Mansueto, said that keeping a happy face and serene attitude was hard given what was at stake, “considering that we only had two full days of testing before the actual event, kept us tingling until midnight”. The technical man described the task as the cherry on the cake for 2012 and even if it involved 10 hours of anxiety, he’d do all over again any time, any day. The GO team that was behind the live video conference between the President and the Puttinu Apartments in Sutton explained that, they will cherish the experience for as long as we live. “Technology today brings people closer, so we thought of making direct contact with those who actually benefit from L-Istrina Live,” a team member said. This effort was possible with the help of Matthew James Mifsud from Vianet Systems who kindly leased the “Life Size” video conferencing equipment and Wayne Lee Valentine who volunteered to personally install this system in Sutton. “The installation for L-Istrina is a perfect example of GO’s ability to deliver highly available networks and enterprise solutions to our customers. The connectivity options and equipment we used for this task are part of our on-going national investment to provide increasingly resilient networks” stated Deputy Chief Technical Officer at GO Kelvin Camenzuli. two international fibre-optic cables and now it is the first operator offering FTTH. “Apart from the expertise of managing the project since its inception in 1995, GO’s fibre and copper cabling is the only way such an installation could experience such flawless results” added Kelvin Camenzuli. L-Istrina is one of GO’s most important CSR pillars which the company endorsed since its first edition in 1995. Apart from the €20,000 donated during the event, GO waivers all the other costs related to the installation, man hours and materials. Moreover, the company also waivers all revenue shares related to the SMS’s and calls during the event. Last year, this sum reached €64,492. Considering the new record achieved during this year’s edition, this sum is due to reach a record sum as well.

Fair Competition Minister Jason Azzopardi (third from left) during a visit to the archives, with (from left) acting Chief Notary to Government Paul Callu Abela, and HSBC Malta Foundation deputy chairwoman Sarah Watkinson. HSBC Malta Foundation is supporting the preservation of historical documents by helping improve storage conditions at the Notarial Archives in St Christopher Street, Valletta. This building is home to over 20,000 registers containing notarial records and other historical documents dating to the late 15th century. “The Notarial Archives hold an invaluable collection of records offering historical insights that form snapshots of daily life and activities in Malta over a period of six centuries,” said Minister for Fair Competition Jason Azzopardi. “The foundation’s valuable support and voluntary contribution exemplifies the significant role of corporate sustainability within our society.” Part of HSBC’s financial support will fund the implementation of a system designed to stabilise the environmental conditions within the building housing these important documents “In addition to their generous sponsorship, the foundation has for the past two years contributed towards the ongoing digitisation project by supporting over 150 HSBC employees who do voluntary work at the Notarial Archives in connection with the digital imaging of 16th-century volumes,” said Notarial Archives Resources Council member Joan Abela. The council aims to ensure that the rich collection of notarial documents is preserved and protected in a professional, efficient and accessible manner for future generations of researchers. Moreover, NARC envisions the transformation of the Notarial Archives into a leading centre for Maltese historical study, which will be fully accessible to both the local and international research community.
