Alex Haider!

Meet Halifax’s Weather Girl:

Meet Alex Haider, our favourite weather girl for Halifax on Global News! Alex grew up in Wellington, Nova Scotia and studied Radio & Television Arts at the NSCC Waterfront Campus; majoring in Broadcast Journalism. Currently, she reports the weather on Global News for Halifax and New

My brother was my co-host. We focused on Haider household current affairs and a serious recap of dinner,” she explained. Alex’s job involves a lot more than simply reading from a teleprompter. When Alex first sits down at her desk every morning she “opens up all the weather websites and creates the most accurate weather forecast for that evening and the following day. If there’s a storm on the way, you know I’m on full blown storm watch mode!” She builds weather maps, keeps everyone up to date on twitter (follow her at @globalalexh) and of course presents her forecasts on the 6pm and 11pm news. You can also occasionally catch Alex on the morning show!

Soaking Up The Sun This Winter Exclusive Interview with Ultraviolet Tanning Studio Owner Stephen White Written By Katie Conklin // Photography By WForrest Photography

It’s no secret that winters in Halifax tend to be chilly, damp and cloudy with limited access to sun. Enter Newfoundland native, Stephen White, owner of UltraViolet Tanning Studio on Quinpool Road who brings the summer sun to Haligonians who need their Vitamin D fix! White opened UltraViolet Tanning in 2008 and has three employees who help grow and maintain day to day operations and customer service. The salon has six beds including

ALEXAPOPE VS ZAFIRA

By

Melissa Marchand

Supporting local artists, designers and entrepreneurs has always been something I care about, because I am one myself. I have so much respect for people who love doing what they do – especially if they look good while they do it! That’s why I was so excited when Canadian based retailer Alexa Pope collaborated with local artist Conni Zafiris for Zafira clothing and began selling her latest line.

Zafira Maxi Skirt Alexa Pope $85

Zafira Maxi Sweater Dress Alexa Pope $110

Zafira Relaxed Romper Alexa Pope $150

Zafira Mini Sweater Dress Alexa Pope $95

Premonition Crop Top Alexa Pope $75

Zafira Sweater Crop Top Alexa Pope $55

The styles are a perfect way to add some hotness to your winter wardrobe and are flattering on almost any body type. I LOVE her rompers, I own three of them already! And currently I’m loving how she is incorporating the summer maxi trend into the winter and how the Alexa Pope team paired it with this cute crop top. Toss on an open cardigan to stay warm in the colder weather. Remember, support local!

10.Travel somewhere you’ve never been before – No matter what your income is or what your class schedule is like, you can always find time to travel somewhere new! This can be anything from a road trip to a tiny town in Cape Breton to backpacking across Italy! Pick a spot and go there! 9. Limit your trash – This year, give back to the earth and lessen your contribution to the growing landfills. Start by recycling, composting and separating paper from waste. Another way you can lesson your trash is by bringing reusable bags to the grocery store, stop buying plastic water bottles and use more mason jars over plastic Tupperware! It’s as easy as that! 8. Learn something new – Whether that’s learning how to play a new instrument or learning how to speak a new language, challenge yourself and learn something new this year! Better yet - get a friend or your partner on board too! 7. Volunteer – We are always looking for ways to give back to our community or support the organizations we appreciate most. And if you can’t help out financially, just donate your time! It will feel so rewarding in the end and you’ll know your contribution made a real difference! Whether you spend one hour walking dogs in a shelter to a few hours a week in the community garden – it all adds up! 6. Get physical – If anything is for sure, it’s that most NoThere are more ways to burn off those holiday calories then working out excessively at the gym! Try going for a bike ride, hike or even get some fresh air by taking walks with a friend! You’ll get caught up in great conversation and scenery you won’t even notice you are exercising! 5. Improve your finances – Everyone goes a little crazy with their money over the holidays, but now it’s time to get

those finances in order! Create a budget for yourself, or better yet, have your bank put a certain amount or percentage from every paycheck into a savings account. It’s automatic and you will soon get used to the new incoming pay and adjust your spending. 4. Drink more water – Everyone always tells us we should drink more water – but does anyone even know why? Drinking water helps with digestion, clear skin, transportation of nutrients, maintenance of body temperature and weight loss. Grab a 1 liter water bottle and fill that sucker up at least twice a day! You will not regret it, and soon it will become second nature! 3. Get your dream job – If you already have your dream job then move onto the next option – but if you don’t, then it’s time you started looking! Whether it’s a promotion within the same company, a transfer to a different city or a new job in a different sector completely – it’s time to find a job that will make you happy and motivated! Start searching online now! 2. Spend less time on social media – This year try to use your phone and social media less and start doing other things more. Instead of flipping through your newsfeed while you’re on the bus, bring a book or even talk to the person next to you! When you’re bored at home, don’t just scroll through your twitter updates, put on a documentary or call a friend or family member in a different province! 1. Eat healthier – This does not mean trying some fad diet and calorie restricting! Start by cutting out processed foods and eat more fruits and vegetables. Another great thing to do is start making your meals from scratch, that way you know exactly what’s in it! Also try things like “Meatless Monday” or “Stir Fry Friday” – these are great ways to get more clean veggies in your diet!
