History of Duffield House Duffield House was built in the late 1860’s. The first occupier was William Cooper, a tenant of the Penn family who were descendants of the founder of Pennsylvania. In 1869 Edward Coleman bought the land, having succeeded the Penns as Lord of the Manor of Stoke Poges. Ownership passed to Algernon Gilliatt in 1872, he was Church Warden of St Giles, Stoke Poges – the Church associated with Gray’s Elegy. The room now called the Display Room was then the family chapel. There were several owners after Gilliatt each of whom continued to extend and modify the building. During World War II the house was requisitioned as a military administrative headquarters and in 1947 ICI brought the house to provide a management centre for staff and visitors of ICI Paints. Duffield House is now AkzoNobel’s in-house Conference Centre.
