Sustainability: A Principle-Based Approach The Framework for Strategic Sustainable Development offers a scientifically sound and strategic approach to dealing with the complexity of the sustainability challenge in a unified systemic way. The framework was originally developed by Dr. Karl-Henrik Robèrt in 1989. The FSSD offers both a scientific understanding of the definition of sustainability, as proposed by the following Sustainability Principles, and a stepwise planning approach to more sustainable ways of operating in a complex and adaptive system such as our biosphere.
