Phoenix Pioneer Museum

The Phoenix Pioneer and Military Cemetery is one of the oldest grave sites in the city, and unfortunately it has been neglected and forgotten by the surrounding community. This new Museum and memorial grounds is designed to preserve the cemetery and give the surrounding neighborhood a place for reflection.

The project developed by using two main strategies, emphasizing the existing plot grid and maximizing light in a delicate manner for the gallery. The grid layout of the existing Pioneer Cemetery served as a underlying foundation for the design, which helped break up the building mass. The twisting of the roof gave the space more ambient lighting. Finally, taking the void of unmarked grave plots and allowing the empty space to influence the memorial, the steel wall sits above a reflecting pool that has been split into pieces.

Each studio apartment is designed as a townhouse that gives each artist a space for working, living, and displaying their art. The site design separates the driving and walking spaces which gives artist a garage space and eliminates the need for a parking lot. The walking spaces in-between the units becomes the display space which will allow for the artist to showcase their work during community events.

Developing detail models of the US Embassy in London served as precedence to understand building envelope design. The facade for the tower recognized the importance of shading, providing additional floor space, and preserving views all while bringing the tower into the 21st century. Removing the existing facade provided usable floor space. Adding a light perforated steel as a veil that surrounded the building and provided shade while giving occupants full views of the downtown area.

Focused on sustainable, pre-fabricated housing, Cor was created as a stack-able modules that put the designing power in the owners hands. The segments around the ring could be filled based on how much space each occupant needed. Universal design strategies were implemented to ensure equal access to all with economic benefits such as sharing the cost of the elevator and building systems.

Reef ARC

Granite Reef is the last of 7 dams that direct the water coming into Phoenix via the Salt River. This link is where the natural river is transitioned into a series of urban canals. This infrastructure piece was designed to efficiently filter the water as it enters the canals, provide public recreation, and connect pedestrians to the north side of the river bank.

The bridge was designed as a minimalist structure inspired by the drastic change from river to canal. At this place you are presented 2 contrasting views, a lush flowing river to the east and a desert landscape to the west. As you cross the walls slowly climb to a height where each view is completely obstructed. By isolating the 2 juxtaposed views the value and impact of water is presented.

The design concept for the house is to bring multiple generations together with a balance of shared common space and private spaces. The house is designed to let the user be comfortable indoors and make an easy transition to the outdoor space. Opening up the center of the home allows for shaded outdoor spaces to become one with the surrounding indoor rooms, while providing views of Camelback mountain to the north. The pool will help circulate cooler air to the lower level as the house can open to engage with the inner courtyard.

The Mesa ArtSpace lofts were designed to house local artist and provide a studio space for them to create and display artwork. Several community areas including a gallery, dance studio, and workshop are incorporated at the ground level that open to the street for shows.

Previously an abandoned office building, the 7th Avenue Lofts were designed as an adaptive reuse project in downtown Phoenix. Working with the existing concrete structure that floated above the parking lot the new lofts showcase the concrete frame as the interior and exterior design features.

The 1 bed, 2 bath lofts are designed to provide flexible open space and generous daylighting to each occupant. A courtyard, community room, and a dog run were also designed as amenities for the complex.

The Goodyear (left) and Eloy (right) Public Safety facilities in Arizona serve as headquarters for police departments in their respective communities. At Goodyear the design served a growing office and provided training spaces. Feating a ‘Veil’ scrim structure designed to protect the west curtain wall from the afternoon sun.

The historic Eloy facility was renovated and expanded. A priority was removing a drop ceiling to showcase a bowstring structure. Cast in place concrete walls separated the new structure from the existing masonry.
