WHO’D’VE THOUGHT IT?

The month of March 2007 marked a momentous occasion. For those of you who are up on these things, I do not mean the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome, but the fact that on that day, 21 March, a British newspaper - The Independent - devoted its entire front page to the good things to have come out of the gradual unification of Europe. As a committed European, I have felt nothing but frustration at the attitude of the British press and its negative, and often xenophobic, attitude towards the European Union. The reason is probably historic and could go back to the late 1950s and early 1960s when Britain first mooted its intention to join and received a resounding “Non” from General de Gaulle, a Frenchman who was shown considerable hospitality in Britain, as well as being afforded considerable protection, during World War II. When we did finally become a member, it was thanks largely to the tabloids, those bigoted, jingoistic “educators” and opinion formers of the British working

Whilst other Europeans are becoming more multi-lingual, the fact is that the British are becoming less so. It seems as if we want all of the advantages with none of the pain. No wonder so many of my Spanish friends and students keep asking me to explain the inexplicable - Britain’s attitude to the EU, an influential international organization of which it is part, from which its citizens have benefited and to which it could contribute so much if only it would play a full role!

El mes de marzo del 2007 ha marcado una circunstancia importante. Para los que estén puestos en estas cosas, no me refiero al 50 aniversario de la firma del Tratado de Roma, sino al hecho de que ese día, 21 de marzo, un periódico británico -The Independent- dedicó su portada completa a las cosas buenas que ha traido la unificación gradual de Europa. Como europeo comprometido, no he sentido más que frustración ante la actitud de la prensa británica y su negativa, y a menudo xenófoba, actitud hacia la Unión Europea. La razón es probablemente histórica y podría proceder de finales de los años cincuenta y primeros sesenta, cuando Gran Bretaña mostró por primera vez su intención de unirse y recibió un “Non” rotundo del General De Gaulle, un francés que recibió una considerable hospitalidad de Gran Bretaña, además de considerable protección durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial. Cuando nos convertimos finalmente en miembros, fueron los pe-

Si Gran Bretaña es mucho mejor que la UE, ¿por qué tantos miles de británicos abandonan anualmente su país natal y van a vivir a España, Francia, Bulgaria, etc.? No sólo esto, sino que habiendo tomado esta decisión, ¡algunos se niegan a aprender el idioma, viven en el guetos e insisten en que sus anfitriones hablen inglés! Mientras otros europeos están volviéndose más multilingues, lo cierto es que los británicos están volviéndose menos. Parece como si quisiéramos todas las ventajas, pero sin ninguna obligación. ¡Comprendo que tantos de mis amigos y estudiantes españoles sigan pidiéndome que explique lo inexplicable, la actitud de Gran Bretaña ante la UE, una influyente organización internacional de la que es parte, de la que sus ciudadanos se han aprovechado y a la que podrían contribuir mucho sólo si jugaran de lleno su papel!
