ANNUAL REPORT

Greetings from the President

Dear friends of Pope John Paul II High School High School: This past August, Pope John Paul II High School began its 33rd year educating the children who have been entrusted to our care. As I begin my second year as the President of POPE, I want to assure you of my commitment to continue to strive to provide a strong Catholic, Lasallian, Christian Brother’s education to the children of both Palm Beach and Broward Counties. Ours is a heritage and a tradition that is very rich indeed. From what I have learned during the past year, our short history gives us much of which to be proud. It is our goal to continue to grow this rich heritage that has been handed down to us. With the appearance of an economy that might be slowly recovering, I am pleased to write that our enrollment has increased significantly this year. This is in addition to the 8th graders from Saint Mark’s in Boynton Beach, whom we are hosting on our campus for this year. We know that the quality of education and the care provided by our teachers and staff, continues to attract an enthusiastic student body. You may or may not be aware that Pope John Paul II High School had another change in administration for this academic year. Joining Mr. Freund and myself in the administrative leadership of the school is Ms. Jennifer Mulhall, the Vice Principal for Academics and Mr. Richard Casey, the Vice Principal for Student Life.. In the next few months, I will begin the process of forming a new Council of Advisors, in addition to working committees to advise us in certain areas that will benefit the school. We already have in place a Finance Committee and a Development Committee. I will also be establishing other working committees throughout the course of the year. On a different note, you will find a financial report, from our Development Office for last year. The 2012-13 Annual Fund collection, while always appreciated, was somewhat higher than the previous year because of the donations made to the technology project. We would love to get this fund to its past successful years of raising $250,000.00 dollars or more. If you have participated in the past year, please accept my sincere thanks. If you know former classmates who have not participated in the past few years, I ask your help in encouraging them once again to support their alma mater. We still have a great deal of work that needs to be accomplished in order for Pope John Paul II High School to remain vibrant and competitive. For this reason, we will be depending upon the generous support of each one of you even more so than ever before. Please know how deeply grateful we, who comprise Pope John Paul II High School Community, are for your generous support of our ministry here in the diocese of Palm Beach. With the blessing and support of Bishop Barbarito and the Superintendent of Schools, Mr. Gary Gelo, Pope John Paul II High School has begun the process of becoming a Lasallian sponsored school. You can read more about what this means further on in this report. As Saint John Baptist De La Salle, the founder of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, wrote to his early Brothers in the late 1600’s, “Ask God today for the grace of watching so well over the children confided to you, that you will take every possible care to shield them from serious faults. Ask Him to be such good guides through the light your prayers will obtain for you from God and the fidelity you bring to your work, that you will see clearly every obstacle to the good of children and keep away every harm that could injure their souls on the path of salvation.” (Meditations for the Time of Retreat). Please know that we are committed to following the examples left to us from Saint John Baptist De La Salle, the patron saint of teachers. You are truly in our thoughts and prayers and again we are most grateful for your past generosity. Live Jesus in our hearts, … Forever! Sincerely, Brother Daniel Aubin, F.S.C.

Brother Dan Aubin, FSC President

Our Mission:

Our Vision:

Our Philosophy:

Pope John Paul II High School, located in Boca Raton, Florida, is a Catholic coeducational college preparatory school in the Diocese of Palm Beach following in the tradition of Saint John Baptist De La Salle and the Brothers of the Christian Schools.

The vision of Pope John Paul II High School is to be an educational leader inspired by the moral and spiritual teachings of Saint John Baptist de La Salle. This is accomplished by:

Pope John Paul II High School fulfills its mission to form students in the Catholic faith using the Gospel as its guide. The life of the school is centered on the teaching of Christ and the essential elements of Lasallian educational practice.

Our faith based learning community fosters excellence in all programs and enables the spiritual, academic, artistic, and physical development of each student. Dedicated faculty and staff instill the Gospel values of tolerance, concern for the poor, justice, peace, and responsibility while welcoming students of all beliefs and backgrounds.

• Promoting a spiritual environment that acknowledges the diversity of different religious traditions and the responsibility to use these values as a basis for service to others and the betterment of society. • Committing programs and resources for service of the poor. • Encouraging and recognizing excellence in its students and faculty. • Providing an atmosphere conducive to learning and creativity for students and faculty. • Creating a caring Lasallian community environment which includes students, parents, teachers, administrators, staff and alumni. • Providing a spirit of collaboration among administration, staff, teachers, parents and students. • Valuing the uniqueness of each student and making every effort to meet his or her needs. • Developing young men and women who demonstrate the highest standard of educational, moral and spiritual preparation who are ready to embark on the challenges of today’s society. • Developing self-confidence in our students. • Promoting the image of the school in a manner that exemplifies the values that are emphasized and taught therein. • Helping all members of the Pope Community to deepen not only their relationship with the Lord but also their participation in their local church. • Establishing and maintaining a leadership position in the integration of technology to enhance student achievement.

The faculty holds students to high standards of intellectual and moral development, encouraging them to reach their potential and preparing them to face the challenges of the modern world. Campus ministry programs and service opportunities help students develop relationships with God, family, and community. The Pope John Paul II High School family guides students to grow in mind, body, and spirit, encouraging them to become good citizens of world and ambassadors of Christ and the Kingdom of God. Through caring relationships, students are called to live Lasallian values, develop their full potential, respect all life, and pursue action that brings spiritual, academic, and personal goals to fruition.

Director of Development

The 2012-2013 school year has passed and the Class of 2013 is well into the college courses, the current seniors are applying to numerous colleges and universities, the juniors are cracking open SAT study guides, the sophomores are no longer the new kids on the block, and the freshmen are getting accustomed their new textbooks on the iPad. Last year, we welcomed the Charism of the Christian Brothers by introducing Brother Dan Aubin as our President and Mark Freund as our Principal, this new change brought a new mission and vision to Pope John Paul II High School and our community has welcomed the Christian Brothers with open arms. With our new initiatives we created a plan to enhance the technology of the school by adding a wireless network throughout campus allowing our incoming freshmen class to use electronic textbooks with their iPads, and the opportunity for our upperclassmen to bring in their own personal wireless devices to enhance their learning experience. One of the greatest parts of my job is interacting with our student body, whether I’m attending one of our home athletic events, watching our school drama productions or just sitting in on a class, I am always amazed at the level of talent our student body brings to our school. It is our goal to continue giving our student the best education, program and facilities in order for them to further their successes. We need the support of our alumni, parents and community so that we can continue to excel in Catholic education. We could not operate without the generosity of so many. Your generosity is making a difference in advancing the mission of Pope John Paul II High School. Our goal with this publication is to be dutiful stewards of that generosity by our accountability back to you. When you walk on campus, you can visually picture the difference that your gifts are making, and what is so exciting is that we are just getting started. Please accept this annual report as our special way to recognize and thank you from our heart-of-hearts for believing in our leadership, our mission, our students, our tradition, and our future. Every gift, no matter how large or small, is making a significant difference in the life of this great school. It has been a tremendous blessing to be on the receiving end of these gifts, but more importantly, our hope and prayer are that you have been richly blessed with the joy of giving. Live Jesus In Our Hearts…Forever

Annual Fund Gift Summary

2012 - 2013 Gift Summary

Technology Drive “The Freshman class of 2017 is the first class to use iPads instead of textbooks at Pope John Paul High. Using iPads has many advantages. The iPads take up less space and are lighter than textbooks. Since the iPad is used not only as a textbook but serves as our paper, it enables our homework and classwork to be completed more rapidly. That gives us more time to study. Assignments are turned in electronically. As long as there is an internet connection, teachers are able to receive our work promptly. There are no more excuses for losing or forgetting homework. The iPads have brought us a lot of new educational opportunities. We are more technically savvy, learning to obtain and use real time data faster and more accurately. Textbooks will never be as current as the World Wide Web. I have great expectations for our generation of students. We are very fortunate to have been given the opportunity to use this advanced technology in the classroom.” - Jack Barcia Class of 2017

“Utilization of the iPad in the classroom has been exciting and rewarding! I've never had students get excited before when I told them that we are going to take notes. The iPad makes note taking fun for them now. They enjoy typing notes instead of handwriting them. Students type their notes on the "notepad" screen, with the original screen still viewable. I love the iPads because I don't have any trouble reading my students’ notes anymore, regardless of their handwriting. The iPad also saves and organizes their notes for future retrieval, which is an added benefit. Another benefit for students is the capability to tap a word while reading and the iPad displays a definition for that word. For me, I benefit by connecting my iPad to my smart board screen. This enables me to refer to information while teaching without having to run back to my computer to change screens, giving me more time to teach my students. I feel like I have just tapped the iceberg. There is so much more we are learning daily to utilize this incredible technology. Students have immediate access to endless educational tools with the iPads. This technology is engaging the students in the classroom more than ever and opening new opportunities for teaching and learning.” - Ms. Michelle Gigliotti Faculty

“We are proponents of Catholic education and want to see Pope John Paul II High School thrive and grow. In these difficult economic times all private learning institutions are struggling to expand their student bodies. In addition to competing with free public education, Pope John Paul II High School faces formidable competition from other local private institutions. One mandatory requirement to remain competitive and relevant in the education arena is to keep pace with the rapidly changing technology sector. We want students at Pope John Paul II High School to have the most advanced tools available in order for them to be fully prepared for college after they graduate. When Jose presented us with an opportunity to enhance the level of computer technology at the school we quickly and confidently agreed to help.” - Greg & Debbie Peters Technology Drive Supporters

Kelly Bliss, ’99, is living up to her name. A dentist who treats children from underserved populations, Bliss graduated from dental school in 2009 at the University of Florida in Gainesville, where she has resided for the last 12 years. She earned her undergraduate degree in business with a chemistry minor at UF. While getting teeth extracted or getting shots in your mouth is not exactly blissful, “people are very grateful,” she said.

“Every once in a while I make a difference in someone’s life. It’s fun to see the children smile.” Bliss is earning loan repayment for college loans by treating patients in underserved populations through the National Health Service Corps and works four 10-hour days each week at the Family Medical and Dental Centers in Palatka. She is a UF faculty member who supervises senior dental students at the center. She also has treated patients each Friday for two years at the Department of Labor’s Job Corps in Gainesville where teenagers and high school dropouts earn their GEDs and receive job training. “I really like it,” said Bliss. “I’m doing back-to-basics dentistry where I feel like I’m doing something good for people. It appeals to me to work somewhere I can help the less fortunate.” Bliss attended St. Joan of Arc before coming to Pope John Paul II High School where at both schools “the underlying value of helping the underprivileged was always taught. I love the tradition, teachings, and discipline of Catholic school that enabled me to do what I do now. I’m so glad my parents sent me.” Bliss’s parents and many other parents were very involved in the school, she said, creating a family atmosphere. “I had great teachers there and made great friends,” she recalled. “I didn’t want to leave.” At Pope, Bliss played volleyball, basketball and tennis and developed an appreciation for sports for its ability to “promote teamwork and focus.” She was influenced by Coach Tim Koerber. “He was a great role model and example of how to enjoy what you are doing in life.” Coach Koerber’s influence extended to Bliss’s enjoyment of her career path. “I don’t want to be stressed over whether Miss Jones likes her new veneers,” she said, laughing. During her years in dental school, Bliss accompanied UF dental faculty member Timothy Garvey, D.M.D., who conducts mission trips to the Dominican Republic. She extracted teeth, gave fluoride treatments, and taught children oral health care in a rural area near the Haiti border where the population has no dentists. The UF dental faculty and students distributed donated toothbrushes, toothpaste and dental floss. “Due to the absence of electricity and supplies, we performed a lot of extractions to relieve pain,” she said. “Many people have uncontrolled infections that can turn fatal.” Bliss was a part of the group that organized the UF Grad Cup, an athletic competition between the Colleges of Dentistry, Medicine, Pharmacy and Law that raises funds for mission trips to other countries. Winning the Grad Cup gives one school “bragging rights” to display it for a year, she said. While organizing the first event, Bliss met her fiancé, a fellow dental student, Kevin Koscso, who is now in his residency for endodontics, a specialty of dentistry that provides root canals and other surgeries. Bliss and Koscso are planning a November wedding. Eventually, Bliss would like to return to South Florida to use her “time, talent, and treasure” to treat patients in a Medicaid clinic because she would like to continue her service to the underserved population.

Children of Alumni Endowment Fund The Alumni Committee in cooperation with PJPII faculty would like to support the school in creating an endowment fund to assist Alumni families who are in need of financial assistance to enroll their children with PJPII. A campaign has been developed to reach out to Students, Alumni, Parents and the Community for funding with an initial goal of $100,000. Growth of the fund will be through consistent efforts so that a perpetual campaign could be established to sustain the fund and assist additional families with its growth. Returns on income from principal will be used to provide assistance. Funds will be awarded based upon application and need. A portion of the funds will be set aside for emergency purposes such as a job loss or the death of a current Alumni student.

Vision:

Award Qualifications:

The Alumni Association would like to support the school in creating an endowment fund to assist Alumni families who are in need of financial assistance to enroll their children with Pope John Paul II High School.

The scholarship will be made public through various Pope John Paul II High School sources such as the website, Social Media, Admissions Office, etc.

A campaign has been developed to reach out to Students, Alumni, Parents and the Community for funding with an initial goal of $100,000. Our plan is to substantially grow the principal through consistent efforts so that a perpetual campaign could be established to sustain the fund and assist additional families with its growth.

The student(s) receiving assistance must be the child of an Alumnus.

An application will be posted with instructions on how to apply for the scholarship along with a deadline for doing so. An essay from the incoming student will be required.

Moving Forward: As the Pope John Paul II High School Alumni base grows, children of Alumni will continue to increase. The Alumni Associations’ consensus is to create a sustainable endowment that targets Alumni families in need of financial aid.

• Any funds awarded would be divided over 4 years. (Example: If the award is $4,000 the student receiving the award would get a $1,000 credit per year, credited annually towards the student’s tuition. This formula can be duplicated any number of times.)

Funds will be awarded based upon application and need. A portion of the funds will be set aside for emergency purposes such as a job loss or the death of a Legacy student’s parent.

• The Alumni Association will select a panel to review essays and unanimously select recipient(s).

An announcement will be sent to all current recipients with the details of the fund and instructions on how to participate.

• The Alumni Association will be responsible for determining the scholarship amount. (The scholarships may vary based on need).

To make a donation to reach our goal please contact our Development & Alumni Affairs department at (561)314-2133.
