Throughout its 12 years, FICA has also consolidated another of its features: that of being a multicultural festival, characterized by a wide range of artistic manifestations and productions from so many different nationalities. Just to give an idea, in its very first edition the festival had an enrollment of 88 films, 49 of them foreign, from film-makers in 17 countries. This year the 12th edition has registered 548 films of which 346 are foreign, from film-makers in 67 countries. The comparison between 1999 and 2010 shows extraordinary growth, both in general numbers – the quantity of works enrolled is six times more – and in specific numbers – the participation of international films has all but quadrupled. This growth is fruit of intense effort both on the part of the government of Goiás and the organizing committee to disseminate the festival. The filmmaker and writer João Batista de Andrade, general coordinator of FICA’s first and third editions, remembers the challenge he issued back in 2001. “Someone in the team would point blindly to any spot on the world map and I would guarantee to bring a film from that country. We had films from countries that many of us did not even know existed, making the III FICA a real Babel and confirming the universality of the theme”, he recalls. The journalist André Trigueiro has also compared the festival to a “cultural Babel”. With a postgraduate degree in Environmental Management and creator of the Environmental Journalism Course at the Pontifical University of Rio de Janeiro (PUC/RJ), Trigueiro reveals that up to 2003, the year in which he participated in the event for the first time, he knew nothing about FICA, and confesses that he was really impressed with what he saw. “When I became aware, I was already incurably taken by the whole picture: a beautiful historical town – it’s more like a scene from a film! – receiving people from all over Brazil and the world in a cosmic indigenous ritual, in this human anthill imbuing with hope the streets etched on the banks of the Vermelho River” he claims.

Para dar una idea, en su primera edición el festival contó con 88 películas inscritas, de las que 49 eran producciones extranjeras, realizadas por cineastas de 17 países. Este año, la 12ª edición del evento registra 548 películas inscritas, con 346 producciones extranjeras, involucrando a cineastas de 67 países. La comparación entre 1999 y 2010 muestra un crecimiento vertiginoso, tanto en números generales – la cantidad de obras inscritas es seis veces mayor – como en números concretos – la participación de obras internacionales prácticamente se ha cuadruplicado. El crecimiento es fruto de un intenso trabajo de divulgación del festival por parte del Gobierno del Estado de Goiás y del equipo organizador del evento. El cineasta y escritor João Batista de Andrade, coordinador general del FICA en la primera y tercera ediciones, recuerda que lanzó un desafío en 2001. “Las personas de mi equipo señalaban, a ciegas, un punto cualquiera del mapamundi y yo garantizaría traer del país señalado una película. Hemos tenido películas de países que muchos de nosotros siquiera conocíamos, haciendo del III FICA una verdadera Babel y confirmando la universalidad del tema”, recuerda. Quien también compara el festival a una “Babel cultural” es el periodista André Trigueiro. Postgraduado en Gestión Ambiental y creador del curso de Periodismo Ambiental de la Pontifícia Universidade Católica do Rio de Janeiro (PUC/ RJ), Trigueiro revela que hasta 2003, año en el que participó por primera vez en el evento, no sabía nada sobre el FICA, y confiesa que se quedó impresionado con lo que vio. “Cuando me di cuenta, estaba irremediablemente atraído por el conjunto de la obra: una bella ciudad histórica – que parece un escenario de película – recibiendo gente de varias partes de Brasil y del mundo en un “aquelarre” cósmico, en un hormiguero humano cubriendo de esperanza las calles enclavadas a las orillas de Río Vermelho”, afirma. FICA 43
