When an Idea Becomes Reality What a stimulating day Monday’s Catch the Next Wave conference, held at the prestigious Royal Institution, proved to be. The invited audience comprised over 250 industry professionals and researchers from more than 30 countries, united by their shared interest in key disruptive technologies. Focusing on next-generation robotics and automation, the conference brought together leading global experts from the aerospace, medical, academic and marine industries to explore the latest technological advances from their fields and their visions for 2020. As Conference Co-chairman Ralph Rayner explains: “We wanted to look at what is happening in completely unrelated sectors and see how that might play into the marine technology area. We sought an imaginative way of doing so rather than having just conventional presentations, so in the planning stages we paired up our speakers and organised telephone calls between them to see how their talks might dovetail. We were then lucky enough

It’s where Michael Faraday began his career as chemical assistant, helping Humphry Davy discover new elements, and where he went on to conduct his own research and make massive contributions to some disruptive technologies we now take for granted. Maybe Monday’s event will lead to similar exciting steps.”

What Today’s Conference Chairmen Say As explained in yesterday’s Show Daily, we’ve set all the OI 2016 conference chairmen the following challenge: “Imagine you are in a lift (or elevator for those of you from the other side of the Atlantic) and give a classic ‘elevator pitch’ to your fellow passengers about what they will take away from your conference stream, so they follow you out of the lift and into the session.”

AWARDS SUT Oceanography Award Presented The SUT Oceanography Award for 2015 has been presented to Professor Karen Heywood of the University of East Anglia, UK. The award ceremony is usually held at the SUT’s AGM in early December but unfortunately Karen was not able to attend on the day. As a worthy alternative, the presentation took place during OI 2016’s ‘Catch the Next Wave’ (CTNW) conference.

Hydrographic Society in Scotland Stages HydroFest 2016
The Hydrographic Society UK’s Scottish Region will be holding a one-day seminar on ‘Surveying in the Offshore Oil & Gas Industry’ at Aberdeen University on Wednesday 20 April as the latest in its popular series of annual HydroFest events. Featured topics will include Surface & Underwater Positioning, Sensors, Pipeline & Site Surveys and Construction & Inspection with scheduled speakers from Shell and other major contractors. A parallel event also planned for 20 April is the Geomatics Industry Day, which will be jointly hosted by The Hydrographic Society in Scotland, the International Association of Oil & Gas Producers (IOGP) and the International Marine Contractors Association (IMCA). To be held at Shell’s Aberdeen premises based around the theme of ‘Competitive Geomatics Expertise & Support – Innovation, Efficiency & Standardisation Initiatives’, it will feature presentations from leading industry operators, service companies, contractors and representative associations. Looking Back Yesterday’s conference sessions embraced ‘Marine Technology and Services Sector Role in the Blue Economy’, ‘Marine Renewables’, ‘Positioning & Metrology’ and ‘Green Shipping’. The presentations from each of these sessions will be on the OI 2016 website (www.oceanologyinternational.com) by the end of March 2016 but, in the meantime, here is what the chairs had to say about their sessions. Tony Hodgson, Fugro, who chaired the session on Marine Renewables yesterday morning: “We had three interesting presentations covering tidal turbulence, sonar technology for tracking targets around tidal energy devices and passive acoustic noise monitoring for offshore renewable installations.” “Each presentation showed how industry was adapting to new challenges. The first showed how turbulence can affect the performance of tidal devices and how important real site measurements are to the complexity of each site.” “The second gave an update on the development of target identification of fish and
mammals compared to objects such as timber and enabled operators of tidal devices to switch off their device to avoid damage or impact. It also demonstrated how the technology could be used for shark tracking close to beaches.” “The impact of piling noise on mammals and fish was highlighted by the third presentation which combined ambient noise measurement with mammal/fish noise recognition.” Malik Chibah, chairman of Positioning & Metrology: “The Positioning and Metrology conference is generating good interest with key industry individuals in attendance.” Fredric Auger’s keynote speech was well recieved and set the scene with a focus on keeping things simple, cost savings and HSE focus. The proposal for standard guidelines for calibration raised interest and questions from subcontractors present.
The UTEC and Coda Octopus presentation showcased some very impressive real-time subsea imagery. The GNSS sessions presented key improvements in GNSS performance, from both integration with INS (Veripos) and through use of new constellations and bias estimation/ corrections. Two sessions were held yesterday in the Trade & Innovation Theatre on the exhibition show floor. The first was the morning session on ‘Near & Far Market Trading’ embracing the UK, France, Scotland, the USA and Ireland. In the afternoon, attention turned to ‘Open Ocean & Coastal Observatories – Innovation Meets Industry’, organised by SLR Consulting. This session showcased the achievements of open ocean and coastal observatories and the new technologies evolving from the scientific activities of marine observatories across Europe.
Looking Around The opening day of Oceanology International attracted a great number of professionals wanting to know the newest and the latest on marine technology. OI Daily’s photographers caught visitors finding their way to the stands on the show floor.

Paul Ridout Wins AMSI Council Business Person of the Year 2016 Award The annual AMSI Council Business Person of the Year Award was presented on 14 March 2016 to Mr Paul Ridout, executive chairman of Ocean Scientific International Limited, by Mr Richard Burt, chairman of the AMSI Council of the Society of Maritime Industries. The presentation was made during a special award ceremony at the Catch the Next Wave conference. The award is designed to recognise the individual who, in the opinion of the adjudicating panel, has made a significant contribution to the business of marine science and technology in the UK. As one of his nominees said: “Paul has built a dynamic and successful company and gained a well-deserved reputation for honesty and diligence. He has also served on many science and ocean-related committees, offering his science and business skills to a grateful marketplace”.

Mr Richard Burt said: “Paul formed his company in 1989 to take over the operation of the IAPSO Standard Seawater Service which has existed for over a century, to supply the only internationally recognised calibration standard for seawater salinity. Furthermore, Paul epitomised the entrepreneurial spirit to be found in the marine science and technology sector by driving a 20-fold increase in turnover, whilst maintaining
profitability, since the company’s formation. Whilst growing his business Paul has been at the forefront of giving something back to the industry in being one of the founders of the Association of Marine Scientific Industries, now part of SMI, and campaigning to obtain recognition for an important part of the UK maritime enterprise. All in all, a worthy recipient of the AMSI Council Business Person of the Year Award.”

The OI Brand Expands its Horizons
14 - 16 FEBRUARY 2017, SAN DIEGO CONVENTION CENTRE, CA
Bringing together the ocean technology community throughout the world Oceanology International has now expanded its reach further with the launch of Oceanology International North America (San Diego, 14-16 February 2017). This exhibition and conference is the latest addition to the portfolio comprising OI China (to be held in Shanghai’s CECIS from 9-11 November 2016) and OI 2018, which will be back at ExCeL, London from 13-15 March 2018, once again co-located with the InterSpill exhibition and conference. OINA 2017 will combine all the elements and communities within North American ocean science and marine technology, which is the world’s largest marine technology market. This includes bringing together multiple buyers from different industries, all united by the use of technology but in a myriad of different ways.
The San Diego Convention Center will play home to the inaugural Oceanology International North America (OINA 2017) from 14-16 February 2017. The new American show is being organised in association with The Maritime Alliance (TMA), the cluster organiser for the San Diego maritime technology community, whose mission is: ‘To
promote sustainable, science-based ocean & water industries’ and which has an active outreach programme with BlueTech clusters throughout the US and around the world. The show is also receiving support from The Society for Underwater Technology (SUT) and the Institute of Marine Engineering, Science & Technology (IMarEST). You can attend a TMA session on ‘Clusters, Collaboration and a Common Blue Voice’ here at OI 2016 today (13:00-14:30). Oceanology International China (OI China), being held for the fourth year running in Shanghai, is the only forum in Asia where industry, academia and government share knowledge and connect with the international marine technology and ocean science communities. Developed in conjunction with government and industry associations, OI China gives domestic and international suppliers the opportunity to capitalise on China’s rapidly developing offshore energy and marine industries. Through its structured networking programmes, this year’s show will continue to link International suppliers with Chinese buyers, enabling them to build relationships and develop business.

Monitoring Structural Integrity: Understanding Risk and Reliability 10:00-13:00, South Gallery, Room 5 The contribution of the monitoring of offshore structures to reduce risk and improve reliability is key to achieving operational efficiencies in the offshore oil & gas industry and is a new topic to come under the conference spotlight at OI. This half-day session will look at risk and reliability in structural integrity through the eyes of its co-chairmen, Tom Johnson, president, BMT Scientific Marine Services, and Feargal Brennan, director of energy, Cranfield University, along with six experts in the field. Unmanned Vehicles and Vessels in the Spotlight 10:00-12:00, South Gallery, Room 7 & 8 The Unmanned Underwater Vehicles Showcase has long been a feature at OI. This year, this conference strand, which is organised with the Society for Underwater Technology (SUT), has been expanded to cover autonomous surface vessels (ASVs) – hence its new name: the Unmanned Vehicles and Vessels Showcase (UVVS). In recognition of this, OI 2016 is exploring issues associated with removal, life extension or reuse of offshore assets.

Kongsberg’s integrated solutions for research vessels cover all key technology areas on board including navigation and automation, in addition to hydroacoustic and position reference systems. For research and surveying applications, Kongsberg integrates the widest range of multibeam and singlebeam echosounders, sonar, marine robotics systems (i.e. AUVs) and position reference systems available from a single supplier. Industry Code of Conduct for Maritime Autonomous Systems The UK Marine Industries Alliance (MIA) has launched an industry Code of Conduct in respect of surface maritime autonomous systems (MASs). The aim of the Code of Conduct is to establish pan-industry agreement on aspects of MAS development, design, production and operation in advance of and alongside the establishment of governing regulations. An output of the MAS Regulatory Working Group (MASRWG) of the MIA, the Code outlines practices to support safety and professionalism within the industry, advance self-regulation in advance of official direction and support improved communications between companies, regulators and the wider maritime community.

The Dutch contracting company Van Oord Dredging and Marine Contractors B.V. has purchased a suite of Gemini 720is multibeam imaging sonar in the launch week at OI 2016. The Gemini 720is sonar, combined with customised Gemini SeaTec software, will enable Van Oord to automate basic tasks such as monitoring the touchdown point of pipelaying operations on Stingray, the shallow-water pipelay barge. This will eliminate the need to deploy a highly skilled operator and reduce the overall project time and costs.

There are 11 vessels visiting Oceanology International, some for demonstration purposes, some for receptions and on-board displays. On this page, you can learn about three of them.
Libertas The Libertas is an experienced survey vessel operated by Braveheart Shipping. Due to her design, the 17.5m-long vessel remains stable in rough seas and at higher speeds. The multipurpose Libertas can serve as a survey, crew and patrol vessel for max. 12 people and two members of crew. She can be supplied with a Teledyne RESON singlebeam and a Teledyne RESON by the operator but the payload is flexible according to the survey job. She is conducting demonstrations for Teledyne Marine during OI 2016.

R2Sonic has chartered the Port of London Authority (PLA) new 18m catamaran S/V Maplin for the duration of OI 2016. R2Sonic will hold hourly on-water demonstrations of its latest wideband highest-resolution shallow-water echosounder with expanded features on the S/V Maplin throughout OI 2016. MV FlatHolm is a 24m survey and research vessel classified by the UK Maritime Coastguard Authority to work up to 60NM offshore, providing accommodation for 12 persons including a crew of four to six. The vessel has a full suite of survey equipment including winches, a crane and an A frame on board. The 50-square-metre aft deck allows a comfortable and safe working environment with the ability to deploy large equipment including vibrocores, CPTs, ROVs, etc. MV FlatHolm is one of the very few vessels to be fully COWRIE and JNCC compliant and UK MCGA Category II classified. At OI 2016 she is tied up alongside for the duration of the show. This allows visitors to have a look at the vessel and a selection of CMS Geotech’s geotechnical equipment on the aft deck as well as visit the survey shack and see the newly refurbished accommodation.

Teledyne Marine Features Imaging Techniques Teledyne Marine includes many businesses in the marine science so there is lots of news to be found on its stands. We’ve picked a selection of the imaging highlights. The Bowtech Explorer-Extreme compact ultra-low light camera has been redesigned to be much smaller and lighter. The SeaBat T50-P multibeam echosounder from Teledyne RESON has been very well received by the market due to its clean and ultrahigh resolution data, its portability and its wider swath coverage. The SeaBat T50-P full rate dual head configuration is being shown for the first time at OI 2016. Teledyne PDS 4.1 software now features visual project management and set-up. It includes an improved user interface which allows for a visual presentation of the survey track, grid models and background charts. It furthermore provides added visualisation for 2D and 3D file types and a 3D globe overview of project locations with sailed tracks.

Atlas Survey Team Mobilised for MONITA Project Next Geosolutions has been awarded a geophysical, UXO & geotechnical contract from Prysmian SRL for the MONITA project in the Adriatic Sea. Through the collaborative effort of the survey team, Atlas Professionals successfully secured exclusive supplier status to Next Geosolutions for the whole project. The cable route survey operations for MONITA will take approximately seven months to complete. The first Atlas team has been successfully mobilised and is now working with the back-toback team for the first crew change.

Valeport rapidCTD and Hyperion-T Sensors

Valeport is showing its latest sensor in the Hyperion optical range, the Hyperion-T, and its newest profiling technology innovation, the rapidCTD, together with other new products currently in early release. The Hyperion-T sensor determines the suspended solids and turbidity for applications ranging from water quality to sediment transport and dredge monitoring. It is a compact, low-power probe that is accurate and rugged. Housed in titanium, Valeport’s Hyperion-T is one of the few turbidity sensors to offer full ocean depth from one instrument. The rapidCTD is developed primarily to interface with the Teledyne Oceanscience RapidCAST winch and is being shown at OI 2016 for the first time ahead of a planned general release in April. The rapidCTD allows oceanographic data to be profiled from a moving vessel without compromising the Valeport. quality of the data.

Underwater Noise Recorders The RS-ORCA and RS-HILO underwater noise recorders have been launched by RS Aqua. These multi-channel underwater acoustic data acquisition and processing instruments are RS Aqua products, developed in collaboration with highly experienced marine acoustic engineers in Nova Scotia, Canada, and are fully supported by RS Aqua’s renowned technical support hub in the UK. The RS-ORCA can be used to record the richest underwater datasets possible, with multi-mode capabilities across all five acoustic channels. The RS-ORCA can also integrate third-party instruments such as RBR CTDs and Turner Designs C3 multioptic fluorometers, for ocean observatory applications. The RS-HILO is a smaller dualchannel instrument with extremely broad dynamic range, ultra-low power for long-term deployments even at 100% duty cycle and an affordable price.
