Background What is AI?
Artificial Intelligence (AI), works as a simulation of human intelligence in machines that are created with the function of thinking and learning like the human mind. AI can be used to assist people in completing lots of different tasks. Machine learning (a subset of AI) allows the AI to improve how they complete certain tasks, so the experience of the user is constantly improving.
How does AI Image generation work?
AI image generators are AI systems that use deep learning techniques, specifically Generative Adversarial Networks (GANs), to create completely new original images. GANs consist of two neural networks. The first network is the the generator which generates the realistic images based on the text or image-based prompt given by the user, and the second is the discriminator which differentiates between real images and those generated by the generator. The generator will keep generating images until the discriminator can’t differentiate between the generated image and real image. This is how the AI learns to develop these images to a realistic quality.
How can Designers use AI?
Product designers can use AI image generation for a wide range of uses to aid the design process: Generating new ideas – can give unique ideas combining elements the designer may not have thought of. Exploring different style options – can explore new visual aesthetics. Testing concepts – Can rapidly test out new concepts and refine from different options. Saving time – speeds up the beginning of the design process and allows the designer to focus on the finer details.
Aims:
The aim in this booklet is to showcase different examples of the uses for AI image generation for scalp cooling cap and cover design processes. Several softwares were explored, but after evaluation, Midjourney is the chosen software, where a professional account has been used.

Summary
In this booklet the software midjourney AI image generator is used on discord. The team explored a selection of functionalities available in this software with the intent of evaluating the softwares suitability of AI image generators in the medical design process. This booklet is a generic design portfolio, showing examples of different tools currently used by product designers. These ideation tools explored, included morph board ideation, development sketches, annotated exploration boards, marker rendering, pencil/ pen sketches, concepts and more. The booklet showcases examples on, where a thorough literature review and evaluation of the various other softwares that were initially tested is shown in other publications, dissemination and presentations.
Conclusions
The team evaluated midjourney approaching the design and development of scalp cooling caps and covers for the ideation phase only. The team concluded that there could be a benefit to the use of these AI image generators at various stages for a preliminary tool, but not complete replacement of the processes conducted by product designers. For example, in the mass idea generation phases, such as the inspiration phase this could be used for initial exploration. After developing ideas incrementally, upscaled or broadly varied designs presented in the AI software could be used in multiple ways. Examples are for inspiration boards, mood boards or as underlays/ photoshop templates for further modifications. It is quite difficult to produce exactly what you were like from the software, so more input is required. However, the software has advanced significantly and the software is now far more valuable to the design process than it previosly had been since it’s inception in July 2022 (for midjourney).
Further work
Further work will be to continue to explore the various softwares and applications in the medical design process. More functionailities of the softwares are required to dive deeper into its capabilities.
