강함에 대한 순진한 저항이자, 도전 저항은 상대적인 폭력이 아닌 스스로의 육체적 노동 행위를 전재하는 자기 헌신이다. 철은 여러 다른 물질과 달리 인간 문명에 직간접적으로 막대한 영향을 주었다. 철제도구 이후, 인간은 보다 적극적인 전쟁과 그로 인한 힘의 주도권으로 지금의 인류 역사를 만들었다. 한 인간의 욕망에 도구(무기)가 주 어졌고 그것이 ‘철’이었다. 인간들은 끝없이 앞으로만 달리고, 높이 올라가려고 하는 수직적 질서(사 고)를 만들어 왔다. 통쇠를 깎는 행위는 작금의 시대성을 반추하는 자그마한 인간의 온전한 저항이며, 인간의 형식적 관념의 태도에서 벗어나 보다 근원의 물음을 던지는 것이다.

깎는 행위 통 쇠는 그라인더Grinder 기계에 의해 깎인다. 숯 돌로 만들어진 그라인더의 디스크 날은 일정한 빠르 기의 회전을 가하여 마찰을 일으키면서 통 쇠로부터 쇳가루를 갈아낸다. 산소를 공급받는 특수 작업 복을 착용하고 쇠를 깎는 공간 속으로 들어가는 순간, 행위자는 거의 무아지경이 되어 오직 깎는 일에 만 몰두한다. 이 과정에서 인간이 만들어낸 이성적, 형식적 사고나 개념에서 벗어나 순수한 행위자가 된다. 이는 인간 본연의 심상으로의 순응 자세이다.

쇳가루와 서예 본래의 철강은 빛을 발하는 밝은 색의 물질이다. 깎인 쇳가루는 그라인더의 마찰열에 의해 타버린 검 은색으로, 서예의 재료인 먹과 일맥을 같이 한다. 서예를 하기 위해 먹을 간다. 이것은 단순한 행위의 반복이며, 서예의 가치적 행위를 위한 육체적 노동의 순응이다. 통 쇠가 현대 산업사회의 공업적 산물 이라면, 이 쇳가루로 서예를 시도하는 것은 탈 물질화되는 정신적 산물이다.

풍경 통 쇠는 단단한 결합체 철강鐵鋼이다. 강함에 대한 저항의 행위는 미세한 쇳가루로, 바닥에 가라앉으 며 더 이상의 인간 행위들을 멈추고 수평의 끝없는 풍경 속으로 새로운 움직임을 연다. 풍경은 시선을 멀리 두어 끝을 가늠할 수 없게 만든다. 이 풍경은 현실적 상상력을 뛰어넘는 수평적 바램의 공간이다. 곧 수직적 세계에서 수평 세계로의 변환이다. 수직적 세계는 문명과 힘의 역학관계, 인간의 서열, 차별 과 같은 것이며 풍경은 수직적 세계의 반성적 결과이다. 숭고한 자연세계를 상징하는 풍경은 수직적 세계를 뛰어넘고 모든 가치를 포용하는 수평적 질서이다.

A Project of Resistance The resistance in the project does not involve the challenge to any typical force of oppression but is one of dedication to the self imposed challenge of the physical act of grinding steel. Steel has been the backbone of the modern development of warfare and commercial development.

Mankind’s constant desire for progress has led to a vertical system of thinking with its consequent hierarchies. The artist’s act of methodically and persistently grinding down the large steel rod is a meditative act of self-reflection to liberate oneself from this vertical modern system.

The Grinding Process The act of grinding the steel rod is accomplished with a composite disc causing friction with the steel. The blade spins at a consistent speed so it is easy to measure the amount of steel powder created over any given time. A specially designed work suit supplies oxygen to the worker inside the sound proof room. The moment the artist enters this space, he becomes ensconced in this environment where the noise is deafening and grinding is the primary act. Because of this harsh environment and the constant repetition of the act, the artist is unencumbered by formal reason and enters a meditative state. It is a transcendental return to a more pure state of being.

Steel Powder Calligraphy The steel powder resulting from the grinding process is burnt to black and serves as the material for calligraphy and drawings. There is a complete transformation of the steel from a purely industrial product(the steel rod) to a more metaphysical or philosophical product used to engage in calligraphy. In traditional calligraphy, the ink(Muk) needs to be ground in preparation for it use.

This repetition of grinding the ink is a simple one but an integral part of the ritual. How the ink is ground plays a large role in the quality of the calligraphy. This ritual is analogous to the steel grinding process. While the grinding may appear boring or time consuming it is a positive ritual that is absolutely necessary to engage successfully in this calligraphy.

The Transcendent Landscape The act of grinding manifests itself into a fine steel powder that sinks to the floor. The powder accumulates to create a new and endless horizontal landscape. This unique landscape is captured by the lens of the camera focused to the infinite horizon. The result is a surreal horizontal space and final culmination from the vertical. While the vertical world represents the relationship between civilizations, the hierarchies of men and the discrimination that follows, the horizontal world created by this project possesses the opposite characteristics. The vision created is one of peace and tranquility.

CC Camera The CC camera is installed on the floor to capture the horizontal view of an infinite and sublime landscape projecting out to the horizon.
