Annual Report 2018


I

n 2017–18, Jones College moved further toward national prominence and regional dominance. We approved several graduate and undergraduate programs in response to market demand. Students in every academic department distinguished themselves in national competitions and real-world projects. We achieved two top 50 national program rankings, for a total of six such recognitions in two years. Our faculty won many national awards for teaching, research, and service. Our brand is stronger than ever. We have achieved gains in major financial gifts for scholarships, programmatic support, and facilities.

These achievements illustrate hard work and commitment to excellence on the part of faculty, staff, students, alumni, and friends who support our college’s vision. The startup of the Political Economy Research Institute with the University Honors College is moving ahead briskly. Our Business and Economic Research Center produces high-impact research studies for internal and external clients. Our Lead Center for the Tennessee Small Business Development Center adds capital formation, training, and job creation value to the region. We submitted our applications for the 2020–21 continuous improvement reviews for business and accounting accreditation to AACSB International, and we have made great progress on implementing recommendations from our last review in 2015–16. More exciting developments are yet to come! Stay tuned.

Jones College Executive in Residence John Boyens spoke at the Graduate Business Studies professional development seminar. The Jones College Executive Education Center and MTSU’s Alumni Office hosted a professional development webinar with MTSU Young Alumni.

Competition ACCOUNTING. The Beta Alpha Psi chapter qualified for the Deloitte Best Practices competition. M.Acc. student Sophie McMurtray competed with 80 international students in Internal Audit Education Partnership case competition. Sandy Benson’s graduate students participated in the HCA Professional Development and Ethics Competition and Site Visit and a health care grant competition judged by Attorney E. Graham Baker Jr. MARKETING. Six Professional Selling students advanced to Federated Insurance Sales Competition finals with the top three receiving cash prizes. Sixty Professional Selling students participated in the Speed Selling event. Matthew Miles placed first in the Gold Quill Award competition hosted by the International Association of Business Communicators–Nashville, where students developed communication projects with businesses and nonprofits.

ECONOMICS AND FINANCE. Kevin Zhao’s TVA Investment Challenge team earned a $4,020 bonus as the reward of alpha (risk adjusted excess return) on its 2017 portfolio, beating the S&P 500 total return by 2.5 percent. The Real Confidence Investment Challenge team ranked 18th among 39 U.S. student real estate teams. Walker Todd led a team to the second round of the national State Bank Supervisors’ Community Bank Case Study Competition, with the cooperation of Franklin Synergy Bank CEO Lee Moss. Bronwyn Graves placed first in Jones College Scholars’ Week competition. MANAGEMENT. Pam Wright Chair in Entrepreneurship Business Plan Competition winners were Matthew Bullington (’06), first; Brock Arivett, second; and Evan Hemontolor, third. Adam Smith and Joshua Aaron’s MBA Consulting Competition students presented strategies to Cavalry Logistics. INFORMATION SYSTEMS AND ANALYTICS. Harvie Franklin placed first in the Association of Information Technology Professionals Business Analytics Competition. Competing against other universities in the Tractor Supply Co.–Google Hackathon, Cameron Chapman and Kirollos Nassif were members of the winning app development team. MTSU’s first-place Hack-MT team included seven students of Michael Murphy and Scott Seipel.

Economics Placement Tenure-track faculty appointments were secured by Fady Mansour at Columbus State University in Georgia and Maxwell Deaton at Concord University in West Virginia.

Scholarships and Awards Aidan Black received the Financial Executives International Award. The Tennessee Society of CPAs awarded $77,500 to 21 Accounting students, more than any other university. Dennielle Pineda received $5,000 from the American Institute of CPAs. The Public Company Accounting Oversight Board awarded Gina Nguyen $10,000. Six Information Systems and Analytics students participated in HCA IT Pathways Internships.

Finland. Students accompanied by Laura Buckner took classes at JAMK University of Applied Sciences, toured multinational firms, and visited Helsinki; Tallinn, Estonia; and Stockholm, Sweden. China. Kim Sokoya’s graduate business students took classes with Shanghai University students with guest lectures by Chinese professors and visited Shanghai Financial Center, two multinational corporations’ facilities, and a Chinese government incubator center for digital commerce. Taiwan. Kenny Jih’s students studied knowledge management, technological innovation, Taiwan and East Asia politics and economics, and corporate social responsibility with field trips to high-tech R&D sites, manufacturing facilities, traffic control centers, and a government agency.
