Three times they've won to advance to MLS Cup. "To get rewarded for beating Chicago with playing Sporting Kansas City is kind of an unjust reward, but it is a reward,” Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear said. “But five conference finals in seven years is definitely something that a team should be proud of. The coaching staff and players should be proud.” ... With center back Jermaine Taylor sidelined with a knee sprain, Andre Hainault stepped into central defense, making his first start since Sept. 23. "If Jermaine wasn’t ready to play, we knew Andre could step in and play well and that’s what he did,” Kinnear said. “ ... He attacked the ball great, he reads the play well and he was good in the air," Kinnear said. "And he is not afraid to throw his body in front of things." ... There is an injury concern for the Dynamo after Calen Carr was forced off the field with an injury in the first half. "He has a strained hamstring,” Kinnear said. “... Getting this game moved back to Sunday is a benefit for us because we’re pretty banged up and that extra day is going to help us recover.” ... The Dynamo will have one more home game in their bid to complete the entire season undefeated over all competitions in home games, still to lose a competitive match at BBVA Compass Stadium. If the Dynamo win the Eastern Conference Championship, they will play MLS Cup 2012 on the road, regardless of the opponent. "We will take the first home game and keep the same mentality and come out strong in our first home game and then we will think about the next round on the road," said Cam Weaver. Said Kinnear: "The one thing that really impresses me is that this year we knew it was going to be a tough road to get to the conference final and it was going to be on the road." ... Every one of the Dynamo's last five playoff defeats have come as they've been shut out. “The back four and Tally [Hall] -- we relied on them a lot and lucky for us it was enough to get us through to the next round,” Kinnear said. “... Our defending was very disciplined. In order to get out of the series you have to be disciplined United have returned to the Eastern Conference Championship for the first time in six years, as they look to return to MLS Cup for the first time since 2004. “We’ve had a little luck along the way, but who hasn’t?” United head coach Ben Olsen said. “You need that and I just think we’ve got some guys with good character. You start to add enough guys up with character and things tend to go right for them.” ... United still have yet to lose since a knee injury sidelined Dwayne De Rosario -- now listed as probable on the team's injury report. D.C. is 6-0-3 since his injury. "When the chips are down there is a certain spirit about them, it has nothing to do with me, these guys have just come together by themselves - in particular in the absence of Dwayne," Olsen said. "They gelled and they believed and sometimes belief is enough." ... Joe Willis became the first United goalkeeper to save a penalty kick in the club's playoff history, getting the second chance after the first was waved off. "I was OK with him going in that position for sure. It’s a known situation for a goalkeeper, you are coming off the bench, you are not expecting to save it and he gets a look at it, which is always tough," said Olsen. "We saw that before in Philadelphia, ironically and I thought ... it was a big call, but it was the right call." ... United opened the Dynamo's new stadium on May 12, suffering a 1-0 defeat. Then in July, Bill Hamid was sent off with a straight red card early in the first half and United lost 4-0. "It’s a short turnaround, a little shorter than they had which is unfortunate, but Houston’s a tough place to go get a result and we need a result there," said Chris Pontius. ... With Andy Najar suspended after being sent off in the first leg, United were also without Chris Korb for the return match in New Jersey. Lewis Neal -- nominally a midfielder -- came in at left back, while Robbie Russell made his first start in an MLS match since July 15 at right back and set up the winning goal. “I came down the right side and my guy didn’t come with me,” Russell said. “Lio [Pajoy] had a great ball across. I saw the whole defense shifting this way. Nicky made a great run and an amazing finish. It was a perfect time to score.”

United once again got off to a flying start. In the 11th minute, a long ball out of the back from Brandon McDonald found Chris Pontius behind the defense, and he touched the ball around on-rushing Houston ‘keeper Tally Hall before finding an unmarked Maicon Santos for a header from the spot. The Dynamo pulled level in the 50th minute through Will Bruin. Jermaine Taylor placed a pinpoint cross in the box from the left, which the unmarked Bruin volleyed in from six yards out. But United were back ahead through Dwayne De Rosario in the 54th minute. After a corner was partially cleared, the Canadian international whipped a ball in from the left side that slithered past everyone, including Hall, as the ball curled in off the far post. Just five minutes later though, the Dynamo again were level. Bruin pounced on a loose ball outside the United box and fired dipping shot on frame that slipped under goalkeeper Joe Willis. But Maicon Santos wasn’t to be outdone. In the 70th minute, he rose highest to meet a Daniel Woolard cross, nodding it off Hall's hand to the back of the net for the eventual game-winner.

The opening of the newest MLS palace needed a touch of magic, and it came from Brad Davis. His left-footed blast from the center of the field, from all of 35 yards out, curled off the outstretched hand of D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid and into the net for the 67th-minute winner.

The match turned quickly. In the 17th minute, United 'keeper Bill Hamid charged out to cut down a Mac Kandji sprint in the box and took down the Dynamo striker, and referee Jasen Anno immediately pointed to the spot and also showed Hamid a red card. Brad Davis stepped up to rip the spot kick past a newly introduced Joe Willis. The Dynamo struck again just before halftime. After Boniek García played Luiz Camargo to the end line, the Brazilian took a touch and slid a pass past a lunging Willis, leaving an easy tap-in for a streaking Will Bruin. Houston made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute when Davis set Andre Hainault up on the right flank to deliver a well-crafted cross to a waiting García, and the Dynamo Designated Player headed home his first MLS goal. The Dynamo capped the night after Anno pointed to spot again in the 88th minute when Danny Cruz took down Calen Carr at the end line. Brian Ching stepped up to convert the second penalty of the night for the home side.

DYNAMO FACE D.C. UNITED IN FIFTH CONFERENCE FINAL APPEARANCE IN SEVEN YEARS The Houston Dynamo (#5 seed) meet D.C. United (#2 seed) in the first leg of the Eastern Conference Championship on Sunday at BBVA Compass Stadium. The two‐leg, aggregate score series will conclude on Sunday, Nov. 18 at RFK Stadium in Washington. The club with the better combined score (Note: The “away goals” rule is not used) in the two‐game series will advance to the MLS Cup Final. Houston booked a place in the Eastern Conference Championship with a 2‐1 aggregate series win over Sporting Kansas City. D.C. United advanced to meet the Dynamo with a 1‐0 road win over the New York Red Bulls on Thursday, completing a 2‐1 aggregate series victory. Houston and D.C. have never met in the playoffs before this series. The two historic franchises have six MLS Cup titles and eight conference titles between them.

Houston vs. D.C. United Houston is 9‐4‐2 all‐time against D.C. United and holds a 7‐0‐1 mark in eight home meetings against United, outscoring D.C. 17‐4. The clubs met three times in the 2012 regular season and the Dynamo won both home games while United won its only home game in the series. United secured a 3‐2 win at RFK Stadium on April 28 as Will Bruin scored two goals for Houston while Maicon Santos bagged a pair and Dwayne De Rosario tallied the other goal for D.C. United. The Dynamo welcomed United to Houston on May 12 for the inaugural game at BBVA Compass Stadium. The visitors lost center mid Perry Kitchen to injury in the first half before Brad Davis delivered the game‐winner for Houston, a gorgeous, curling strike from 30 yards. The last meeting between these foes came on July 15 as Houston opened a vital three‐game homestand. United goalkeeper Bill Hamid was issued a red card and the Dynamo were awarded a penalty after Hamid’s rash challenge on Macoumba Kandji. Up a man, the Dynamo rolled to a 4‐0 win behind goals from Davis, Bruin, Boniek Garcia and Brian Ching.

Dynamo triumph over Sporting Kansas City in East Semifinals: The Dynamo advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship with a 2‐1 aggregate series victory despite falling to Sporting Kansas City, 1‐0, on Wednesday in the second leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal series at LIVESTRONG Sporting Park. The Dynamo, vaulted by Sunday’s 2‐0 home win in the first leg, advance to their fifth conference championship in seven years. Houston absorbed constant pressure from Sporting Kansas City, which needed at least two goals to force extra time, but could only tally one. Sporting Kansas City’s goal arrived in the 64th minute on a diving header from Seth Sinovic, cutting Houston’s aggregate lead to 2‐1. But the equalizer never arrived for Sporting KC, as Dynamo goalkeeper Tally Hall made three saves and the Dynamo defense thwarted Kansas City’s relentless attack to defeat Sporting KC in the playoffs for the second consecutive season.



Fifth conference final in seven years: The Dynamo are in the conference championship for the second consecutive year and fifth time overall. Dynamo take first leg in first‐ever playoff game at BBVA Compass Stadium: The Dynamo secured a 2‐0 win over Sporting Kansas City in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semifinals on Sunday afternoon at BBVA Compass Stadium. Adam Moffat delivered a sensational goal in the 18th minute, a 25‐yard strike into the upper corner for an early lead and his first career playoff goal. In the 75th minute, Will Bruin, who scored two goals on Oct. 31 at Chicago and assisted on Moffat’s goal, sealed the win with his third goal this postseason off a pinpoint pass from Calen Carr, who earned his second assist in two playoff games. Goalkeeper Tally Hall earned his third career playoff shutout and the win extended Houston’s home unbeaten streak to 29 games in all competitions.



Bruin sets franchise single‐season goals record: Will Bruin followed his two‐goal performance on Oct. 31 at Chicago with his third goal of the playoffs on Sunday against Sporting Kansas City. Bruin has set a franchise record with 15 goals on the season after he led the Dynamo with 12 regular season goals. The second‐year forward has surpassed Brian Ching’s club record for goals in a season in all competitions, including playoffs. Ching scored 14 goals in 2008 (13 in regular season and one in Champions League) and 14 goals in 2006 (11 in regular season and three in the playoffs).

 

Other notes from last Sunday’s 2‐0 win over Sporting Kansas City: Bruin’s goal was his third career playoff goal ‐ he scored all three in the first two games of this postseason ‐ to move to second on the franchise list for playoff goals. Brian Ching holds franchise record with seven playoff goals with Houston. With three goals this postseason, Bruin has tied Ching for the franchise record for goals in a single postseason. Ching scored three goals in the 2006 postseason. The win extended Houston’s home unbeaten streak to 29 games in all competitions. The Dynamo also improved to 7‐1‐0 all‐time in home playoff games and have outscored opponents 15‐5. It was midfielder Brad Davis’ 17th playoff start with the Dynamo to set a franchise record. Bruin became the youngest Dynamo player to record an assist in a playoff game (23 years, 11 days) Calen Carr earned his second assist of this postseason on Bruin’s goal. Carr’s two assists matches a franchise record for assists in a single postseason with Brad Davis, who recorded two assists in 2011 and 2006. It was defender Bobby Boswell’s 11th playoff start with Houston. He moved into a tie with Wade Barrett for fifth on the franchise chart. Dominic Kinnear earned his 12th career playoff win to move into fourth place on the all‐time wins chart.

Bruin leads Knockout Round win in Chicago: The Dynamo advanced to the Eastern Conference semifinals with a 2‐1 victory over the Chicago Fire in the MLS Cup playoffs Knockout Round on Oct. 31 at Toyota Park. Will Bruin scored two goals for the Dynamo in his first career playoff start. Bruin is the third Dynamo player in franchise history to score two goals in a playoff game. Brian Ching scored two goals in the 2007 Western Conference semifinal against FC Dallas and Paul Dalglish scored two goals in the 2006 Western Conference final versus Colorado.

DYNAMO IN HISTORIC HOME TERRITORY 

Dynamo complete fourth unbeaten home season in MLS history: The Dynamo went 11‐0‐6 (W‐L‐T) in regular season home games in 2012, becoming just the fourth team in Major League Soccer history (est. 1996) to complete a season without a regular season home loss. Dominic Kinnear was also head coach of the 2005 San Jose Earthquakes, one of three teams to complete a perfect home season. Dynamo out to defend Eastern Conference crown: Despite being the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference, the Dynamo will try and defend their 2011 Eastern Conference title. A year ago, the Dynamo earned two important road wins – 2‐1 at Philadelphia on Oct. 30 and 2‐0 at Sporting Kansas City on Nov. 6 in the Eastern Conference final – to capture their third conference championship in six years. The Dynamo have excelled in the postseason over the years, posting a 11‐6‐3 all‐time record in the playoffs (counting 2006 MLS Cup final penalty kick victory as a tie).



Road Warriors: The win in Chicago was Houston’s third road playoff win in the last two seasons. The Dynamo earned wins in Philadelphia and Kansas City a year ago after going 0‐2‐2 in their first four road playoff games (2006, 2007 MLS Cup finals at neutral sites excluded).



Dynamo enter playoffs with lowest‐ever seed: The Dynamo are the fifth seed in the Eastern Conference playoffs, the lowest seed in club history, despite setting a franchise record with 53 points this season. Mainstays: Midfielder Brad Davis has appeared in 19 of the Dynamo’s 20 playoff games in franchise history, starting 18. The 2011 MLS Cup final is the only playoff game Davis has missed. Forward Brian Ching has started 16 of Houston’s playoff games, but missed the 2007 MLS Cup final due to injury.



Possession: The Dynamo won the possession battle in 27 of 34 regular season games this season. The Dynamo had less possession, 47 percent, on Oct. 27 at Colorado, but had 57% possession against Philadelphia on Oct. 20, 56% against Montreal, 66% against New England, 54% against Philadelphia on Sept. 23, lost the possession battle to Sporting Kansas City (59‐41%) and Real Salt Lake (58‐42%) but have mostly controlled possession. Houston had 67% against Chicago on Sept. 2, 58% against Toronto on Aug. 22, 65% against Columbus, 55% at New York on Aug. 10, 52% vs. New York on Aug. 3, 60% at Toronto, 58% vs. Montreal, a season‐high 71% against Kansas City on July 18 and 67% vs. D.C. United. Houston lost the possession battle to Sporting KC on July 7, 50.2%‐49.8%, had 61% vs. Chicago on July 3, 55% vs. Philadelphia, had less, 53‐47%, at Montreal, had 63% vs. Toronto, 54% against FC Dallas, 54% at Vancouver, 60% vs. LA, 62% at New England, 60% vs. Portland, 56% vs. D.C., 53% at New York, 54% at D.C., a 49‐51% disadvantage at Columbus, 55% at Chicago, 56% at Seattle, a disadvantage (48‐52%) at San Jose, and 53% at Chivas USA.



Dynamo set franchise points record: With the 3‐1 win over Philadelphia on Oct. 20, the Dynamo set a new mark for points in a season, 53, surpassing the previous club record, 52, set in 2007.



Dynamo advance to Champions League quarterfinals: The Dynamo secured passage to the quarterfinals of the CONCACAF Champions League with a 1‐1 draw versus C.D. Olimpia of Honduras on Oct. 23 at BBVA Compass Stadium. Andre Hainault’s second‐half header was the equalizer for the Dynamo (2‐0‐2), who won Group 3 with eight points to advance to the knockout stage, set for next March. It is Houston’s first trip to the CCL quarterfinals since 2009.



Boniek García continues strong start: Boniek Garcia scored his fourth goal with the Dynamo in the 3‐1 win over Philadelphia on Oct. 20. The Dynamo are 11‐5‐6 in MLS play (playoffs included) since the Honduran midfielder’s debut on June 30 (record includes 1‐0 win over Real Salt Lake when Garcia missed game for international duty and 2‐0 defeat at Colorado on Oct. 27 in which Garcia did not play). Garcia has four goals and six assists and has played 90 minutes in each of his 20 games. Houston has outscored its opponents 31‐18 in the 20 matches Garcia has played. Despite not playing in the first 15 games of the season, Garcia had the second most assists on the club, six. The 28‐year‐old Designated Player signed with Houston on June 7 after playing for Honduran powerhouse C.D. Olimpia since 2003. The midfielder debuted for the Honduras national team in 2005 and has 73 appearances for his country, including five appearances in the 2011 CONCACAF Gold Cup.



Cold Blooded: The temperature at kickoff for last Sunday’s 2‐0 win over Sporting Kansas City was 81 degrees. The Dynamo are now 11‐1‐4 this year when the temperature is 80 degrees or more. 13 of the 16 games were at BBVA Compass Stadium in Houston. Houston was 9‐1‐6 in temperatures of 80+ in 2011, so the club is 20‐2‐10 since 2011 when the temperature is 80+.



Brad Davis, Midfield Maestro: Midfielder Brad Davis recorded his 12th assist of the season on Sept. 29 vs. New England. It is the fourth consecutive season the all‐star midfielder recorded 12 or more assists in a season. Davis had 16 assists in 2011 (career‐high) and 12 assists in 2010 and 2009. Davis finished with the fifth most assists in the league, trailing leader Graham Zusi (15) of Sporting Kansas City.



Bruin finishes one shy of Ching’s regular season goals mark: Will Bruin scored his 12th goal of the season on Oct. 6 vs. Montreal and finished the season one goal shy of Brian Ching’s franchise record of 13 goals in 2008. Bruin is one of only three players in team history to reach 10 goals, joining Ching (13 in 2008, 11 in 2006) and Dwayne De Rosario (11 in 2006).



Davis sets career‐high for goals: Midfielder Brad Davis extended his career‐high for goals in a season with his eighth goal of the campaign on Oct. 20 vs. Philadelphia. Davis’ previous high for goals was six, set with Dallas in 2003.



Dynamo win MLS Reserve League Central/Mountain division title: The Dynamo captured the Major League Soccer Reserve League Central/Mountain division championship with a 2‐1 win over the Chicago Fire on Oct. 13. Cam Weaver scored both goals for the Dynamo and led the club in scoring with 11 goals in nine games. The Dynamo Reserves finish the season 6‐2‐2 (20 points), a point better than rival FC Dallas (6‐3‐1, 19 points) to capture the division crown. It is Houston’s second MLS Reserve League division title. The Dynamo won the division crown in 2008 with a 9‐1‐2 record.



Hall breaks former mentor Pat Onstad’s shutout record: Goalkeeper Tally Hall recorded his 12th shutout of the season on Sept. 29 against New England. With the clean sheet, Hall passed former teammate Pat Onstad, who set an individual franchise record with 11 shutouts in 2007, when the club had a total of 13 clean sheets in 30 regular season games. Hall finished tied for second in the league in shutouts, trailing only Jimmy Nielsen of Sporting Kansas City (15).



Boswell sets career‐high for games in a season: Dynamo defender Bobby Boswell played in his 31st regular season game of the season on Sept. 29 vs. New England, surpassing his previous career‐high for games in a season of 30, set in 2006. The 29‐ year‐old has been a mainstay since his 2005 rookie season, appearing in at least 23 games and making 22 starts or more each season. Boswell has averaged 28.13 games and 27.75 starts per season in his eight‐year career. Boswell started on Oct. 20 versus Philadelphia for his 225th career regular season game.



Davis continues to climb MLS all‐time assist chart: Dynamo midfielder Brad Davis recorded his 92nd career regular season assist on Sept. 29 vs. New England to pass Cobi Jones for seventh on the MLS all‐time assist chart. Davis is now nine assists behind the next man on the chart, Marco Etcheverry, who is sixth with 101 assists. Dynamo assistant coach Steve Ralston is the all‐time leader, with 135 assists.



Second Half Savants: The Dynamo were 7‐3‐8 in regular season games in which they were tied at halftime and 7‐0‐2 when leading at the interval. Houston is 14‐3‐10 when tied or leading at the break.



Kinnear passes Nicol on MLS all‐time wins chart: With the 2‐0 win over New England on Sept. 29, Dynamo head coach Dominic Kinnear passed Steve Nicol on the all‐time Major League Soccer wins chart. Kinnear has 114 wins in nine seasons as head coach between Houston and San Jose and is tied for fourth on the all‐time wins list.

Dynamo newcomer Giles Barnes makes debut at Kansas City: Midfielder Giles Barnes made his Dynamo debut on Sept. 14 at Kansas City. Barnes, 24, entered as a substitute for the final nine minutes of the 1‐1 draw. Barnes joins Houston with eight years of experience in the upper levels of English soccer. He has 138 total appearances in all competitions, including 35 games in the Barclays English Premier League. Barnes also made 12 appearances for England’s U‐19 national team. The attacking midfielder joined Derby County of England in 2005 at age 17 and helped the Rams gain promotion to the English Premier League in 2007. Barnes scored ten goals in 84 appearances with Derby County and earned its Young Player of the Year award in 2007. The London native spent 2010‐11 with West Bromwich Albion of the English Premier League and made 19 appearances for the Baggies. Barnes played the 2011‐12 season with Doncaster Rovers of the English Championship, the second tier of English soccer. The winger tallied one goal and four assists in 36 appearances in all competitions last season.



Ching ties Diaz Arce for 11th on MLS all‐time goal list: Dynamo forward Brian Ching scored his 82nd career MLS regular season goal on Sept. 2 at Chicago. Ching is now tied for 11th on the all‐time MLS scoring list with Raul Diaz Arce. Ching’s next target is 88 goals, where Carlos Ruiz and Roy Lassiter sit tied for ninth on the league’s all‐time chart.



Ching sets new career‐high for games played: Dynamo forward Brian Ching set a new career‐high for regular season games played in a season on Sept. 2, with his 26th game of 2012. It is Ching’s 11th season in MLS, and the veteran twice recorded 25‐game seasons, in 2008 and 2004.



Carr sets career high with fourth goal: Calen Carr set a career high with his fourth goal of the season on Aug. 3 All four goals were scored in a four‐game span, including two versus Kansas City on July 18. Carr scored 3 goals in 2010 and 2007.



Ricardo Clark returns to Dynamo: Ricardo Clark made his return debut for the Dynamo on Aug. 10 at New York, appearing as a substitute for the final 15 minutes. The Dynamo completed the signing of the free agent midfielder on Aug. 8. Since leaving the Dynamo at the end of the 2009 season, Clark played for Eintracht Frankfurt of the German second division through February, when he was loaned to Stabæk Fotball of the Norwegian first division. A cornerstone of Houston’s 2006 and 2007 championship teams, Clark, a member of the 2006 MLS Best XI, scored 7 goals in 97 games played for the Dynamo between 2006 and 2009. Additionally, Clark has been capped 34 times by the U.S. Men’s National Team, including two starts in the 2010 World Cup.



Cameron receives U.K. visa to complete transfer to Stoke City: Former Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron was granted a United Kingdom visa on Aug. 8, completing his transfer to English Premier League club Stoke City. Cameron, 27, made 116 regular season appearances for the club in five seasons, scoring 11 goals with 15 assists. The Attleboro, Mass. native played various roles in central midfield and center back for the Dynamo and was named an MLS All‐Star in 2009, 2011 and 2012. Cameron also won Houston’s Golden Boot in 2011 with five goals and five assists in a career‐high 33 games.



Three’s Company (shutouts): After going over three years without three consecutive shutouts, the Dynamo recorded three clean sheets in a row twice in a seven‐game span in July and August. Houston kept its third straight clean sheet on Aug. 3 versus New York after recording three in a row to begin July. Before the run of six clean sheets in seven games, the last time Houston recorded three straight was May 30 – June 10, 2009.



Davis, Cameron named All‐Stars: Midfielder Brad Davis and former Dynamo defender Geoff Cameron were named to the inactive roster for the 2012 MLS All‐Star Game. The Dynamo pair were among a group of 13 players named All‐Stars that did not compete in MLS’ 3‐2 win against Chelsea FC on July 25. The 13 inactive All‐Stars were voted on by the players. It is the fourth straight year that Davis is an All‐Star, and his fifth selection overall.



Hall sets goalkeeper consecutive starts record: Tally Hall set a franchise record for consecutive regular season starts by a goalkeeper with his 47th consecutive start against FC Dallas on June 16. He broke the record of 46 set by Pat Onstad, from Sept. 13, 2008 – May 13, 2010. Hall started all 34 games in 2011 and the first 33 games in 2012, pushing the active record to 67 games, before the streak was snapped on Oct. 27 at Colorado.

• BBVA Compass Stadium opener: The Dynamo opened the 13th soccer‐specific stadium in Major League Soccer on May 12. On a gorgeous, 82‐degree day in front of a sell‐out crowd of 22,039, the Dynamo honored past legends, including Wade Barrett, Pat Onstad, Eddie Robinson and Craig Waibel in a pregame ceremony that included the unveiling of 2006 and 2007 MLS Cup championship banners. Brad Davis provided a signature opening moment, delivering a beautiful, curling 30‐ yard strike for the game‐winning goal in the 67th minute.

D.C. United is one of Major League Soccer’s most storied clubs. The club has won four MLS Cups (1996, 1997, 1999, 2004), four Supporters’ Shields for putting together the best regular season record (1997, 1999, 2006, 2007), two U.S. Open Cup titles (1996, 2008) and two international trophies – the CONCACAF Champions Cup and InterAmerican Cup, both in 1998.

D.C. United is a perfect 7-0-0 when leading at half. United is one of two teams in the League to be perfect when leading at half, joining New York (9-0-0).

First Strike Is Killer During the regular season, the Dynamo were a poor 1-9-2 when allowing the first goal, a winning percentage (.167) that matched League-worst Toronto FC.

D.C. United – Highest seed remaining D.C. United took second place in the Eastern Conference and is now the highest seed remaining in the 2012 MLS Cup Playoffs. The Black-and-Red would host MLS Cup on 12/1 if it moves past the Houston Dynamo.

Beasts in the East D.C. United boasts an overall 8-3-0 mark in Eastern Conference championship matches.

Life without DeRo – United streak at 9 games To go along with its record 17 game unbeaten streak at home, the Black-and-Red now boasts an nine-game undefeated streak dating back to 9/15. During this stretch, United is 6-0-3, with an impressive four shutouts and only six goals against.

Road Warriors In its last six away matches, D.C. United has only conceded three total goals, for a stingy 0.50 GAA. It’s been almost three months since United has given up multiple goals on the road (8/25 in a 3-0 loss to the Montreal Impact at Stade Saputo).

No Slowing Down United’s nine-match unbeaten streak is the longest active undefeated stretch in MLS. The only club that had gone more consecutive games without losing this season was Sporting Kansas City (12 matches).

Roommates come through against Red Bulls Nick DeLeon and Joe Willis, teammates on the field and roommates off the field (also with United defender Chris Korb), came through in the final minutes to push the Black-and-Red through to the next round in a dramatic 1-0 win. Willis stepped onto the field to make a PK save after Hamid was ejected. Just minutes later, DeLeon’s game-winning strike put United through to the Eastern Conference Finals.

United without Hamid, Najar Following two red cards in two games against New York, D.C. United will be without goalkeeper Bill Hamid and defender Andy Najar – who is serving an additional two game suspension for throwing a ball at the referee in the first leg of the Eastern Conference semi-finals.

Ben Olsen – right substitutes at the right time Dating back to 9/15, almost every single one of Head Coach Ben Olsen’s substitutions have made an impact. On 9/15, Lewis Neal entered in the 56th minute and scored the game-winning goal. On 9/20, Maicon Santos entered in the 57th minute and tallied the game-winning assist. On 9/23, Branko Boskovic entered in the 57th minute and subsequently scored the gamewinner. On 10/6, Hamdi Salihi and Maicon Santos entered in the middle of the second half and Salihi notched the gamewinner on a rebound off of a Santos shot. On 10/20, Lewis Neal entered in the 69th minute and scored the game-winner in the 91st, on a pass from Branko Boskovic, who enetered in the 87th.

Ironman Brandon McDonald Through the 2012 season, Brandon McDonald only missed one game, due to suspension on 4/7 against the Seattle Sounders. With 33 games started, McDonald broke a long-standing single-season record of minutes played set by Jeff Agoos in MLS’ inaugural season. Agoos, also a defender, tallied an impressive 2,805 minutes in United’s first season that saw the first domestic double – MLS Cup Champions and U.S. Open Cup Champions. McDonald broke the record on 10/20 against the Columbus Crew with one game remaining.

DeLeon in the record books Previously, the club record for most League goals scored during a rookie season was five, achieved by Santino Quaranta (2001), Freddy Adu (2004), and Andy Najar (2010). Nick DeLeon, a rookie out of Louisville, netted his seventh of the year on Thursday to secure his spot in the Black-and-Red history books.

Boskovic’s assist rate Branko Bošković’s 0.58 assists per 90 minutes at the end of the regular (minimum of 15 games played) season was good for second (tied with Mauro Rosales) in all of Major League Soccer.

In 34 regular season games, Head Coach Ben Olsen used 30 distinct starting lineups to lead the club to a second place Eastern Conference finish and its first post-season berth in five years.

D.C. United has found the back of the net between the 61st and 75th minute more than any other timeframe this regular season (15 goals).

When scoring the first goal…

Through 34 games this season, D.C. United has 15 multi-goal games. The Black-and-Red have netted four goals three times (against FC Dallas, the New York Red Bulls and Chicago Fire); three goals six different times (against the Houston Dynamo, San Jose Earthquakes, Toronto FC, New England Revolution, Montreal Impact and Columbus Crew); and two goals six different times (against the New England Revolution twice, Toronto FC, New York Red Bulls twice and Colorado Rapids).

D.C. United has a 15-2-2 record when scoring the first goal this season. Its only two defeats came against San Jose (5-3 loss on 5/2) and New York (3-2 loss on 6/24).

Career-high scoring this season So far, Chris Pontius has netted a career-high 12 goals in 34 games. This season has also seen Pontius develop into a clutch player – 6 of his 12 goals during the 2012 campaign were game-winning goals. He is also one of six players in the League to record a hat-trick (against New York on 4/22).

Over two goals per game at home this year Not only is United putting together one of the most impressive streaks in club history, but the team is doing it in sizeable fashion as well. Through 17 regular season home games this year, United averaged over two goals per game at home with an impressive 38 goals for inside the friendly confines of RFK Stadium.

Scoring machine D.C. United has been able to find the back of the net this season at a very high rate, averaging almost 2 goals per game. Only three other teams scored more than the Black-and-Red through the end of the season (53): New York (57), LA (59), and San Jose (72).

De Rosario tallies 100th MLS goal In United’s 2-2 tie against the New York Red Bulls on 8/29, captain Dwayne De Rosario scored his 100th career MLS goal (105 in all competitions). Only six others in League history have reached this milestone: Jeff Cunningham (134), Jaime Moreno (133), Landon Donovan (124), Ante Razov (114), Jason Kreis (108), and Taylor Twellman (101).

UNITED PLAYERS IN THE PLAYOFFS Brandon McDonald - While with the San Jose Earthquakes, McDonald played in all three matches with three starts during the 2010 playoffs, which saw San Jose reach the Western Conference semifinals. Robbie Russell - Russell has one of the strongest playoff resumes on D.C. United’s squad, playing in 12 post-season games with 10 starts with his former club Real Salt Lake. In the 2009 MLS Cup finals, Russell converted the winning penalty-kick en route to his first MLS title. Maicon Santos - Santos has three career Major League Soccer appearances – two with Chivas USA in 2009 and one with FC Dallas in 2011. Santos also scored a goal in Chivas USA’s playoff run in 2009. Marcelo Saragosa - Marcelo Saragosa is one of the Black-and-Red most seasoned playoff veterans with eight playoff games, including five starts, under his belt with three different teams. Dwayne De Rosario - Few players can boast of as much playoff experience as De Rosario can. De Rosario has made 23 playoff appearances, 16 of them starts, and tallied 5 goals and 5 assists. He has won four MLS Cups, including two with Houston (2006, 2007) and two with San Jose (2001, 2003). De Rosario scored the Cup-winning goal at RFK Stadium on November 18, 2007 in a 2-1 triumph over the New England Revolution. Mike Chabala - Chabala made two playoff appearances, both as a starter, with the Houston Dynamo in 2009. Stephen King - King has made one playoff appearance as a substitute for five minutes in a Chicago Fire loss in 2008. Daniel Woolard - Woolard has made three playoff appearances (two starts), logging 198 minutes, all with the Chicago Fire in 2008 and 2009. Josh Wolff - Wolff has made 14 playoff appearances in five seasons with the Chicago Fire and the then-Kansas City Wizards, netting a goal and assisting on another. Wolff scored a goal in the Wizards’ 2004 MLS Cup loss to D.C. United.

Russell is one of the few United players with an MLS Cup under his belt and will use his veteran experiences to help lead the team. Russell enjoyed a successful 2011 season at Real Salt Lake, in which he started 22 of the 26 matches he played, netting two assists in 1,809 minutes of action LAST GAME: Russell played 90 minutes as a starter and tallied the game-winning assist in United’s 1-0 win over the New York Red Bulls on 11/8.

Salihi was signed in February of 2012 from Rapid Vienna of Austria's top division, where he was once the teammate of Branko Boskovic. Salihi, in three years with Rapid Vienna, tallied a prolific 53 goals in 90 total matches (all competitions). Salihi is already making his presence felt in D.C., leading the team with the highest goals per game average. A goal in each half by forward Will Bruin gave the Houston Dynamo the victory against the Chicago Fire in the Eastern Conference Knockout Round match at Toyota Park. It was the first road win in more than three months for the reigning Eastern Conference champions. Bruin's first goal came on a free near-post header in the 12th minute on a corner kick from teammate Brad Davis, getting free in the heart of the penalty area and bouncing a deflected shot past Chicago goalkeeper Sean Johnson. Then, just 19 seconds after halftime, Bruin got his second on a blistering diagonal shot from inside the area after he was sprung by former Fire forward Calen Carr on the heels of a costly Chicago turnover. The Fire pulled a goal back in the 83rd minute when he ran onto a ball from Patrick Nyarko from the left flank and sent an angled shot off the far post and into the goal. But the rest of the match was an exercise in game management by the Dynamo, to advance into the semifinal series.

The LA Galaxy's title defense moved on after a stirring comeback against visiting Vancouver Whitecaps FC. Vancouver went ahead after just 182 seconds through rookie Darren Mattocks' finish, after carved out a yard of space in the area to finish a pass from Matt Watson. The Whitecaps' bunker defense then repeatedly thwarted LA's attack until the home side hit with two quick goals midway through the second half. LA outshot Vancouver, 23-9, but put only seven on target, and Whitecaps goalkeeper Brad Knighton was superb all night, his best save on a David Beckham free kick headed inside the left post just before halftime. But the equalizer came in the 69th minute. Beckham played a short corner to Juninho, who found Magee sneaking alone into the box and set him up perfectly for a side volley which gave Knighton no chance. Then four minutes later, Landon Donovan was trundled over by substitute Martin Bonjour in the area, and he finished his own penalty kick with aplomb for his record 21st postseason goal.

The first playoff match at RFK Stadium in five years had it all as the New York Red Bulls tied D.C. United 1-1 in a wild Eastern Conference Semifinal Series first leg. The drama began in the first half when United were awarded a penalty after New York defender Connor Lade was called for a handball in the box. The ensuing spot kick was taken by United’s Chris Pontius, who struck the ball hard, but New York goalkeeper Luis Robles guessed right and the ball was cleared in the 33rd minute. But United took the lead on the hour when Red Bulls substitute Roy Miller attempted to clear a ball sent into the box by Perry Kitchen, but sent his clearance directly into the top corner of his own goal. Five minutes later, the score was level when D.C. goalkeeper Bill Hamid jumped to corral a header by Heath Pearce and fell into his own net while holding the ball. The home side went a man down in the 71st minute. Right back Andy Najar was shown two yellow cards in very quick succession, the second after throwing the ball at referee Jair Marrufo, but the Red Bulls were unable to capitalize.

The Houston Dynamo extended their unbeaten streak at home, handing top-seeded Sporting Kansas City a 2-0 loss in the first leg of their Eastern Conference Semifinal Series at BBVA Compass Stadium. The Dynamo opened the scoring in the 18th minute behind a brilliant strike from Adam Moffat. With Kansas City struggling to clear their area following a corner kick in the 18th minute, Will Bruin, nodded the ball into Moffat's path, and from well out of the area he unleashed a technically perfect strike inside the back post that Jimmy Nielsen could only wave at as it whizzed past him. Houston gradually took control of the game and eventually cashed in to score an all-important second goal 15 minutes from the end. Calen Carr turned KC defender Aurélien Collin and sped toward the end line, eventually picking out Bruin for a simple finish inside the six-yard box. The scoreline was a repeat of last season’s 2-0 Dynamo victory in the Eastern Conference Championship at Livestrong Sporting Park.

Seattle Sounders FC and Real Salt Lake settled for their third 0-0 draw of the season, this time in the first leg of their Western Conference Semifinal Series. Real Salt Lake goalkeeper Nick Rimando was tested more often, making five saves, including diving stops off a pair of backto-back corners in the 33rd minute. First, he stopped a Sammy Ochoa header and then moments later he robbed Jhon Kennedy Hurtado's diving effort. But his performance was made even more impressive by the fact that he played the final 20 minutes after a collision gave him a swollen eye and nearly knocked him out of the game. Sounders FC goalkeeper Michael Gspurning made four saves, his last saving the result in the 85th minute when he dove to his right to stop an Álvaro Saborío header. The San Jose Earthquakes did it again, getting a goal late in stoppage time to overcome the LA Galaxy in the first leg opener of their Western Conference semifinal series at the Home Depot Center. It was an intense, defense-minded affair, with the Galaxy having more and better opportunities. Robbie Keane nearly broke the tie in the 86th minute, but his 26-yard blast caromed off the crossbar. Then in the 94th-minute, Víctor Bernárdez's free kick from 31 yards got through the Galaxy wall at the top of the box then goalkeeper Josh Saunders, who was unable to prevent the ball from rolling over the goal line. It was the fifth time this season the Quakes have scored a stoppage-time winner, including the May 23 meeting with the Galaxy in Carson, in which Alan Gordon headed home a 94th-minute decider as San Jose rallied from a two-goal deficit for a 3-2 triumph.

D.C. United advanced to the Eastern Conference Championship after a late goal gave them a wild 1-0 win in the second leg of their semifinal series, the match postponed a day due to a heavy snowstorm. The match exploded in the 69th minute after referee Mark Geiger ruled that United goalkeeper Bill Hamid clipped Kenny Cooper on a breakaway inside the penalty area, giving a penalty kick and sending off Hamid. Cooper then took the ensuing spot kick against substitute Joe Willis and converted it, but it was called back as Henry and Tim Cahill were called for encroachment. On Cooper’s retake, he was denied by Willis, who dove low and to his left. Six minutes later, Rafa Márquez was sent off with a second yellow card for a foul on Chris Pontius, leaving both teams to finish the match with 10 men. The Houston Dynamo advanced to a second straight Eastern Conference Championship, holding off Sporting Kansas City in their quest to erase a 2-0 first-leg deficit. Seth Sinovic scored the game's lone goal for SKC, allowing the Dynamo to survive 2-1 on aggregate. Despite wave after wave of attacks, Sporting couldn’t truly test Tally Hall in the Dynamo goal as Houston kept 10 men behind the ball. They finally broke through in the 64th minute. Kei Kamara drove the ball into the final third with a trademark run, laying off to a streaking Graham Zusi, who lifted the ball to the back post for a diving header by overlapping left back Sinovic from close range. Houston managed just three shots, none in the second half, as they focused on defending their narrow lead in the face of unrelenting SKC pressure.

For the first time, Seattle Sounders FC were victorious in an MLS playoff series, getting the only goal of the entire Western Conference Semifinal in a 1-0 second-leg victory against Real Salt Lake. Mario Martínez, who started in place of the injured Mauro Rosales, made the most of his opportunity on the biggest of stages with his first-ever Seattle goal. Brad Evans first found Fredy Montero at the top of the box with enough time and space to pick out Martínez unmarked at the far post. The Honduran ripped a one-timer on the half-volley, beating RSL goalkeeper Nick Rimando to the back post. It was the the first Seattle goal scored against RSL in all competitions this season, in five matches total. RSL had the run of play and the better chances on the night, forcing forced Sounders ‘keeper Michael Gspurning into perhaps his best performance of the season, with nine saves in all.

The LA Galaxy finally beat the San Jose Earthquakes, taking a 3-1 win at Buck Shaw Stadium and completing a 3-2 aggregate victory in the Western Conference Semifinal Series. The Galaxy were on the way early. Robbie Keane walked through San Jose’s midfield and knocked a 22-yard shot off the post to tie the series on aggregate in the 21st minute. The Irish international then slipped in behind San Jose’s scattered backline on a 34th-minute counterattack, collecting a through ball from Landon Donovan and rounding Earthquakes goalkeeper Jon Busch before slotting it home for his second of the evening. Mike Magee delivered the insurance goal in the 39th minute, making an unmarked run to the penalty spot and one-timing a pass from Donovan on the right. Alan Gordon gave San Jose hope in the 82nd minute when he turned home a mis-hit shot from Justin Morrow for his first career playoff goal. But the Earthquakes could not find the equalizer they needed to force overtime, as defender Ike Opara had a clear shot in second-half injury time, but pushed it over the bar.
