BRIDGING Challenges in 2010 A Message From our Chair and President Dear Friends, Despite volatile financial markets, in 2010 Toledo Community Foundation received nearly $13.5 million in gifts and awarded $12.8 million in grants and scholarships. Donors, like you, have opened your hearts to support hundreds of nonprofit agencies serving thousands of people in our community with programs that make life better for old and young alike. To achieve an even greater impact, this year we sharpened our focus on the community’s future prosperity. In addition to traditional giving, we are pursuing many special projects to make our community stronger. Just a few include: Beverly J. McBride CHAIR

Regional branding – highlighting the brand or story of our region by distinguishing the assets of the community for future growth;

Economic development – facilitating the work of regional economic development agencies to create jobs; and

Human trafficking initiative – funding programs/services for young women who have been victimized by prostitution or involved in modern-day slavery.

While the economy continues to recover, we remain confident about our future. Enthusiastic grant making volunteers, an engaged board of directors, professional staff, hardworking nonprofit partners and committed donors like you are helping to lead us forward.

Keith Burwell PRESIDENT

Throughout this report, you will find short stories about a couple of our donors and the ways they fund their charitable wishes, and about a couple of the grantees that were impacted by Foundation funds. The Foundation works hand-in-hand with each of you to bridge the gap between making a donation and making a positive impression. We invite your involvement in making the most of new opportunities – bridging challenges – to increase the impact of philanthropy across northwest Ohio. We deeply appreciate your trust in the Foundation. Sincerely,

Beverly J. McBride Chair, Board of Trustees

PHILANTHROPIC CENTERS Toledo Community Foundation offers four Centers for Philanthropy through which our professional staff works to meet our donors’ diverse needs. The Foundation staff can help you define, implement and evaluate a giving program that addresses the issues and opportunities that are important to you. Certain benefits and fund options are available through different Centers. Foundation staff will determine which Center can best fulfill your needs. The Center for Individual & Family Philanthropy is designed to meet the unique needs of

individuals and families with an approach that emphasizes matching donors with causes of personal interest. Designed to help individuals and families simplify their charitable giving, this Center allows donors to create a permanent legacy, communicate charitable vision and values to children and grandchildren and even involve them in the family’s philanthropy today. We also provide expert guidance in defining a philanthropic mission, structuring charitable gifts and putting mission into action. Whether it’s a simple gift fund or a supporting organization, a wealth of financial and philanthropic expertise is available. Whatever your charitable goal, we can help you achieve it.

The Center for Corporate & Business Philanthropy is tailored to meet the charitable initiatives

of northwest Ohio businesses. We are a creative, cost-effective and tax-efficient way for the corporate sector to invest in the community. Designed to help businesses manage community affairs and corporate giving programs, this Center offers expertise in defining philanthropic goals and objectives, establishing a giving program, setting up a charitable fund and leveraging a charitable investment in the community. For business owners and family businesses, the Foundation is the ideal vessel for receiving complicated business assets as charitable gifts, including closely-held stock and business interests.* Foundation staff provides the professional expertise to help corporations and business owners make a lasting impact on our community. * Subject to review by TCF’s Gift Acceptance Committee

Let us show you just how easy, flexible and effective your charitable giving can be. Contact Bridget Brell Holt or Kris Theisen, philanthropic services officers, at 419.241.5049 for more information. The Center for Nonprofit Resources helps nonprofit organizations advance their missions through expert guidance and a wide array of services, training and educational opportunities. We know that, over time, our community’s needs and opportunities change and nonprofit organizations have emerged and grown in large numbers to address these issues. Many organizations seek help with capacity and sustainability – the kind of support they need to achieve their missions. The Foundation’s mission involves a commitment to ensuring that nonprofit organizations in our region have the information

4

and resources required to operate in an efficient and effective manner. Recognition of this need to assist in building local nonprofits’ capacity, as well as offering quality training and technical assistance served as the basis for the establishment of The Center for Nonprofit Resources. The Center has developed an ever expanding and changing list of training programs designed to inform and assist local nonprofits. Major topics covered include board development, human resources, marketing, fundraising, finance, technology and volunteer management. In addition to providing exposure to national experts in these fields, several of our training programs provide the opportunity for grants. These grants can be used to further improve key management areas. If you or an agency you care about could benefit from The Center’s offerings, you are encouraged to call Kate Smith, director of programming, Center for Nonprofit Resources, at 419.241.9513. Information about current workshop and seminar offerings can be found on our website at www.toledocf.org or The Center’s website at www.c4npr.org. An additional offering, by establishing an organization endowment fund under the auspices of the Foundation, nonprofit organizations are relieved of the administrative burdens and costs associated with holding their own endowment fund, while receiving a steady stream of income for operating, programmatic and other organizational needs. For information about creating an organization endowment fund, please contact Kris Theisen or Bridget Brell Holt, philanthropic services officers, at 419.241.5049. The Center for Private & Family Foundations exists to provide assistance to private, family and corporate foundations and to nonprofit organizations’ grant making programs. The Foundation has over 37 years of experience in administering all aspects of grant making programs. With its skilled professional staff it is uniquely positioned to provide a broad range of advisory, organizational and administrative services to other entities involved in organized philanthropy. Any or all of our services can be tailored to meet the specific needs of the grant making organization. If you, your family members, a client or an organization in which you are involved could benefit from this Center, please call Fredi Heywood, administrator, at 419.243.1706. We Can Help We share our donors’ commitment to building healthy communities and promoting the responsible stewardship of resources. Whether you choose to open a fund that creates an immediate impact in the community, a permanent endowment to address ongoing needs or a legacy for your community, or use the Foundation’s experience to administer some or all aspects of a grant making program, the Foundation can help make your charitable giving easy and effective.

BRIDGING CHALLENGES

Dick and Fran Anderson 6

BRIDGING CHALLENGES How friends help ends meet Grants were awarded to: Challenge During this economic downturn, many nonprofit agencies have been asked to serve more people as their budgets are stretched to the limit. Unfortunately, when donations are needed the most, donors often are not able to give enough to help charitable organizations provide the basics – food, shelter and clothing.

Solution To celebrate the 80th birthday of Dick Anderson, chairman emeritus of the board of The Andersons, Inc., a temporary fund was created at Toledo Community Foundation by his friends and family to make grants to agencies suffering from the sluggish economy. Through the generosity of more than 150 donors, the Fran and Dick Anderson Community Support Fund awarded in excess of $700,000 to area nonprofit organizations in 2010. The Andersons are deeply appreciative of their friends’ humanitarian support to help so many.

ESTABLISHING A FUND Take a moment to consider the important part you might play in Toledo Community Foundation’s work by creating a charitable fund. There are a number of ways to get started, and we invite you to explore them with your family, your professional advisor and with Foundation staff members. The Foundation offers a variety of ways for you to make donations to reach your philanthropic goals. You can establish your own Foundation fund either during your lifetime or through your estate plan. All grants distributed from your fund – today and in the future – are awarded to charities, as determined by you, in the name of your fund. Your gift to the Foundation may be made in many forms. Corporations and businesses are limited to gifts of cash, securities, closely-held stock, limited partnership interests and real estate. You and your family have even more options to consider.

Vehicles for Giving

A cash gift is tax deductible as provided under current law. Donations of appreciated publicly-traded securities are accepted. This type of gift avoids capital gains tax and allows the maximum tax deduction for the full market value of the gift. The Foundation also accepts closely-held stock and limited partnership interests. A bequest in your will is a simple way to leave a lasting legacy. A life insurance policy can be changed to designate the Foundation as the owner and/or beneficiary of a policy. Retirement fund accounts are often your largest asset. You can give all or part of these assets to the Foundation, both during your lifetime and/or at your death. Real estate (land, primary residences, vacation homes or farm land) can be donated to the Foundation and deducted at full fair market value, up to 30 percent of your adjusted gross income. The Foundation sells the real estate and the net proceeds capitalize a new fund or are added to an existing fund. Similarly, tangible personal property can be donated to the Foundation, which is also then sold. A charitable remainder trust allows you (or other named beneficiaries) to receive lifetime income. Upon your death, the remaining principal creates a fund at the Foundation. You receive an immediate charitable deduction for a portion of the gift and avoid capital gains tax. A charitable lead trust creates income for the Foundation for a specified period, after which the remaining principal is distributed to named beneficiaries. Gift and estate taxes are reduced with this type of gift. Transfer of a private foundation affords you many advantages, including lower overhead, staff to assist with your charitable goals and a higher tax deduction for any future gift, to name only a few.

8

FOUR SIMPLE STEPS to create your fund

1 Define your charitable goals. Decide if

you want family members involved, both now and/or in the future. Consider how much involvement you want in selecting the charitable organizations that will receive grants from your fund. Think about how much you want to give in charitable contributions each year.

2 Contact a philanthropic services officer

at the Foundation to discuss the fund option or options (described on pages 10 and 11) that best suit your interests and needs. We can create a personalized plan, including the appropriate legal and other documentation, which makes giving simple and relevant.

3

Determine which asset or giving vehicle you will use to start your fund. Evaluate the options of lifetime assets versus planned giving assets – or a combination of the two.

4 Select a name for your fund. Many donors choose a family name, a name that honors or memorializes a loved one or a company name.

GETTING STARTED To inquire about starting a fund at the Foundation, please contact Kris Theisen or Bridget Brell Holt, philanthropic services officers, at 419.241.5049, Kris@toledocf.org or Bridget@toledocf.org. 9

FUND OPTIONS Choosing a fund option that is right for you Toledo Community Foundation provides professional management and investment of charitable funds as well as personalized services to meet the goals of individuals, families, businesses and nonprofits. There are many flexible ways to support your interests – the choice is yours. How involved do you want to be in your grant making? Do you want to give to a specific organization or a specific area of interest? Launch a scholarship to honor or memorialize a loved one? Restrict your giving to northwestern Ohio and/or fund internationally? Create or continue your business giving program? Whatever your giving goals, there is a fund option for you. The Foundation offers a number of fund options for you, your family, businesses and nonprofit organizations. A fund at the Foundation operates like a private foundation, but without the administrative and legal burdens associated with private foundations. The funds are flexible and you decide how much or how little you want to be involved in making grants.

Community Fund – respond to changing times

A Community Fund is the broadest option and leaves the decisions about your gift to the Foundation. You trust the Foundation’s extensive experience and knowledge of the community to identify the most pressing needs and effective programs. A Community Fund provides maximum assurance a fund will remain timely and relevant. Grants from these funds are given to qualified organizations to support the well-being and vitality of our region and its residents.

Designated Fund – support effective organizations You support one or more specific charitable organization or institution in perpetuity. A Designated Fund may help a single theatre, a food bank or a school during your life and after your death. If a beneficiary organization ceases to exist, loses its tax exempt status or changes its mission, the Foundation redirects support to a similar organization to honor your original intent.

Donor Advised Fund – engage with your giving You take a more active role in your grant making (whether local, national or international). A Donor Advised Fund provides maximum flexibility for your grant making, allowing designated advisors (named by you) to make recommendations regarding grants from your fund. The Foundation facilitates compliance with financial, legal and tax requirements, as well as helps develop grant making strategies, articulates funding guidelines and conducts due diligence, relieving you of the administrative responsibilities associated with charitable giving. If you wish, the Foundation helps you identify additional organizations that you might consider supporting.

You have several options.

• Single advised fund – Allows only you to make grant recommendations. • Family advised fund – Provides a simple and popular way for your family to engage in organized philanthropy.

• Corporate advised fund – Offers flexible options for your business and/or employees’

charitable giving programs. Your company or business can outsource all, or any part, of its charitable giving program to the Foundation for management. You can endow your fund, requiring that the principal of the fund remains untouched and only a percentage of the annual earnings on the fund are available for grant making; or you can create a growth fund (non-endowed) allowing the flexibility to distribute both fund principal and annual earnings, although not below the minimum required fund balance of $10,000. 10

FUND OPTIONS Donor Directed Pooled Fund – direct your giving to specific organizations

This type of fund allows you the privilege, during your lifetime, to annually designate specific charitable organizations to receive grants from your fund.

Field of Interest Fund – connect personal values to grant making You direct funding to specific causes (the environment, youth programs or the arts, for instance) or geographical areas (a town, county or region) that you feel strongly about, yet it does not restrict grants to any one particular organization. Field of Interest Funds support issues or areas that are important to you in perpetuity.

Organization Endowment Fund – sustain nonprofit organizations The Foundation’s years of experience with the nonprofit community enables us to assist other charitable organizations in managing their assets. By establishing an Endowment Fund at the Foundation, nonprofit organizations are relieved of the administrative burdens and costs associated with holding their own endowment fund, while receiving a steady stream of income for operations, programming or other organizational needs.

Scholarship Fund – invest in education

You establish an educational scholarship for a specific interest. Scholarships can support any level of education, and may be directed toward students who are graduates of a particular grade or high school, students planning to attend a particular secondary or post-secondary school, students in a particular field or students from a certain geographical area.

Supporting Organization – partner with the Foundation for access to community information A Supporting Organization is a separate and distinct legal and grant making entity that is in direct affiliation with the Foundation. It maintains its own board of trustees which has decision-making authority relevant to grant recipients and other matters. A Supporting Organization’s alliance with the Foundation reduces administrative, investment and regulatory burdens. Family involvement, individual attention, flexibility, professional staffing and access to community information are among the key reasons that families and businesses create supporting organizations at Toledo Community Foundation.

A DONOR PROFILE

How a legend created a legacy Challenge Bob Fondessy had every right to be proud of Oregon since he was one of the founding fathers of the city in 1957. Upon the 50th anniversary celebration of the city in 2007, he served as the parade’s grand marshal and acknowledged the progress of the community. But Bob realized that just as much effort needed to be devoted to making sure the future of the city was as bright. As a successful businessman and civic leader, Bob loved his hometown and embraced all it had to offer.

Solution Through his estate plan, Bob established the Robert L. Fondessy Family Fund at the Foundation to make sure his beloved community would be posed for success after his death. Bob died in 2009 and this generous man will be remembered for many years to come as yearly grants will be made to numerous organizations he designated to support in the community he called home. His legacy is one of passion by investing in tomorrow.

A GRANTEE PROFILE

How an agency reaches out Challenge Many low- to moderate-income individuals and families in the community are eligible for various public benefits, but do not know what is available or how to apply. Often it takes several visits to multiple agencies to get the help they need. Many do not have the ability to get through all the details for such programs as food stamps, childcare or housing assistance, health insurance and veterans’ services. With Lucas County’s poverty level greater than the state’s average, the majority of residents who are eligible are not taking advantage of available cash assistance benefits.

Solution Toledo Community Foundation asked Advocates for Basic Legal Equality, Inc. (ABLE) to create a Mobile Benefit Bank staffed by AmeriCorps members who travel to churches, senior centers, food banks, festivals, housing shelters and other places where people congregate. With more than $180,000 in grants from the Foundation, trained AmeriCorps members equipped with mobile computers, printers and telephones meet one-on-one with residents to determine what assistance is available and to provide free legal assessments. This non-traditional approach has helped hundreds access almost $1 million in food assistance and $194,000 in tax refunds. With the success of the program and a grant from the Foundation, the Mobile Benefit Bank is expanding to Wood County and will help even more people live better.

A GRANTEE PROFILE

How a young entrepreneur funds charity Challenge As a little kid Nick Francis, a 2010 Toledo Technology Academy graduate, had a special passion for Halloween. His decorations and parties were frightful. Banking on an entrepreneurial hunch that others adore the spooky time of the year, Nick formed his own business, International Halloween Productions LLC, and created the most fearful commercial haunted house around. The Ohio State University freshmen and recipient of three Foundation scholarships crafts new thrills and chills each summer for his 40 seasonal employees to scare the wits out of thousands of people each Halloween. But he wanted to give more than just screams to the community.

Solution While in high school Nick participated in Youth Leadership Toledo and Youth in Philanthropy Encouraging Excellence, a program supported by Toledo Community Foundation that teaches teens the importance of charitable giving. The Eagle Scout applied his charitable knowledge to his haunted house venture, and so far the business has donated $11,000 to the Make-A-Wish Foundation. Through his philanthropy, children get their special wishes, as Nick operates a spine-tingling venture.

How cousins honor their grandparents Challenge Clyde and Marian Sluhan’s six grandchildren grew up hearing stories of how their grandparents worked hard to survive the depression and start a business. Their grandfather was raised in an orphanage and was the first child from the agency to go to college and graduate. After he married and while he was working full time, he tinkered in a summer kitchen developing metalworking fluids. Once he had a product he felt could be marketed, the Sluhans moved to Toledo and established Master Chemical Corporation in 1951. Today the fluid products firm has offices, laboratories and production facilities in Perrysburg, China, India and England.

Solution To honor the courage, conviction and integrity of their grandparents, the six grandchildren established the Clyde and Marian Sluhan Memorial Fund at Toledo Community Foundation.

Sluhan Grandchildren: (back) Sara Baer, Anne Sluhan, John Sluhan, Aaron Wright, (center) Jessye Wright; (front) Diana Sluhan

The cousins serve on Master Chemical Corporation’s Board of Directors and each donates their director’s compensation to the fund. They also make individual contributions to the memorial fund. Hoping to fuel future discoveries, a portion of the grants from the fund will be awarded to high school students pursuing degrees in science or engineering. The cousins feel their grandparents would be proud of their philanthropy and satisfied they learned the lesson of giving.

BRIDGING CHALLENGES

Ask Yourself: • What local causes or institutions do I care deeply about and want to support? • What community organizations for which I have volunteered are important to me? • What values would I like to pass on to my family, and how might I use philanthropy to pass on these values? Contact us at 419.241.5049 or visit www.toledocf.org
