Tips for teachers and parents

• Sound dots

Blending page Segmenting page

Sound dots indicate the sounds in a word. When blending words, point to the sound dots; say the sounds; and then blend them together to read the word: /s-nai-l/ – snail. When segmenting a word, look at the picture; say the word; and then point to the sound dots while saying the individual sounds in the word: snail – /s-n-ai-l/. Segmenting -

menting, model these skills. After you have done this a few times, the child will begin to read and sound out words without help.

Silent letters

Some English words have silent letters, such as the ‹e› in horse, which are not pronounced when the word is read. In these books, any silent letters are shown in faint type. Remind the child not to say the faint letters when blending the word.

• Vocabulary

If any vocabulary is new to the child, point out the item in the picture, or explain the word and relate it to what is happening in the picture.

Read and See

Read and See books are fully decodable books for new readers.

Read and See Pack 2 books are specifically designed for children who are learning to read and write with Jolly Phonics. Each book focuses on a different digraph, such as ‹ai› or ‹sh›, or a spelling pattern, such as ‹ck› or double letters. The letter sounds used in this book are shown in the table below. There is one word on each page. The children read the word, and then turn the page to see if they are correct by looking at the picture. The word is shown again in sound dots underneath the picture so that the children can learn to sound out the word after reading it. Faint type is used for any silent letters, such as the ‹e› in gone.
