here is so much to celebrate with this Summer 2nd volume issue of Joli Magazine. We are all filled with pride over the overwhelming support and partnerships that we have formed - some new and some long standing through years of publishing success in our community. We are especially excited to have snagged Chad Gracey the drummer for “Live,” the alternative rock band from the 90’s for our cover and interview. When we learned that the band was back together and touring again, doing “The 25 years of Country Tour” along with Counting Crows, which included a stop at the newly opened Five Points Amphitheatre in Irvine, we knew we had to meet up with Chad, who resides in our very own O.C., and get all the details. Be sure to read his interview and take note of the setting of our photoshoot, RockStars of Art Fine Art Gallery right in Corona Del Mar. We found this new awesome gem of a gallery to be the perfect backdrop for the shoot. Stop by the gallery and tell Cory Marie Owner/Director that we sent you!

Our team had such a great time shooting our fashion shoot in Laguna Beach with all our fashion partners. Tony Florez our staff photographer never disappoints us! If you haven’t had a chance to visit The Laguna Art District “Summer of Color” it’s a beautiful collaboration of art, music, food and culture, some of which graces the pages of our Summer fashion shoot. Well it’s starting to feel like Fall is on the horizon. Families are already preparing for back to school shopping sprees. I really miss those days. My kids are grown and I really think back fondly about those days. It goes by way too fast. Our Joli team is back in the trenches ready to bring you more surprises and interesting places and things to enjoy in the next issue. We are working diligently on our new website and digital advertising and branding opportunities. Stand by - we will release it any day now. Until then, enjoy the Summer and I’ll see you in the Fall. I

grew up in New York where Labor Day signified the end of summer. Although originally established in the 1800’s to commemorate working class labor union members, in New York the holiday is associated with the final weekend to gather at the beach, dine al fresco and enjoy many other warm weather activities. But not here! In our hometown, Labor Day is when the tourist population begins to dwindle and we get to enjoy our coveted lifestyle even more, knowing that the idyllic weather will continue for a second local summer season, with far less crowds and less traffic. One of my favorite pastimes, enjoying the art scene in Laguna Beach, beckons now that parking becomes more available. If you haven’t seen the Summer of Color 2018 Murals, make your way to Laguna Canyon Road to enjoy this culturally enriching collection of public art. Be sure to read the back story in this issue’s Culture column before you go. Afterwards, enjoy one of the many great dining options available in Laguna. Selanne Steak Tavern, reviewed in this issue, is a great place for small bites or a hearty dinner, depending on your appetite. Local summer also presents a great opportunity to enjoy the first class amenities at our Newport Coast gem - The Resort at Pelican Hill.The award winning golf course, outdoor dining with breathtaking views, and even private cabanas flanking the noted Coliseum Pool become accessible to locals, daycation style. Read about the many ways to experience this resort, without having to be a registered guest. Summer of Color Makes Big Splash In Arts Minded Beach Town BY JUDIT LAUFER

T

he village of Laguna Beach, with over 100 art galleries and studios and world renowned arts festivals, has drawn art lovers from all over the world to its picturesque seven mile coastline. Now art lovers have one more reason to come to Laguna:To view its newest art exhibit labeled “Summer of Color.” This eye-catching, vibrantly hued collection of murals painted on the facade of a cluster of buildings along Laguna Canyon Road’s Arts District, is the dream project of Mark Orgill, a designer and long-time resident of Laguna Beach who, along with his wife, Dora Wexell, developed and built [seven-degrees], a venue for unique, upscale corporate and private events. Orgill and Wexell, are a couple deeply devoted and involved in the Laguna Beach art scene. Mark is president of Visit Laguna and Dora, president of First Thursdays Art Walk.You get the picture.When it comes to


creating a vision for art, they care, do and share. The buildings between 775 - 859 Laguna Canyon Road are, and will for the next five years be, canvasses for murals conceived and created by internationally recognized artists.The project was funded by local businessman Mo Honarkar, who bought [seven-degrees] last year and owns many neighboring properties, including the Art-A-Fair building. Wexell and Orgill are both still very much involved in the business;Wexell as Vice-President and General Manager, and Orgill as a consultant to Honarkar, who is committed to enhancing and expanding the cultural and creative spirit of Laguna Beach.Together, along with Honarkar’s daughter Hasty, and through Laguna Creative Ventures (LCV), which Orgill formed, this arts minded team envisions this project as an opportunity to improve the district, raise awareness and draw artists and art lovers from beyond just Laguna Beach. Torrey Cook, an artist and gallery owner and Ben Rubin, owner of Elephants and Castles fine-art printing studio, were hired to curate and commission the murals. Artists, who were simply given the theme – COLOR, had full creative license and independence, according to Wexell. The most visible mural is on the Art-A-Fair building and was painted by internationally renowned Spanish street artist, Okuda San Miguel. It has the effect of a shattered kaleidoscope, with a prism of swirling pink, yellow and red polka-dots; green, blue and purple triangles, horizontal, swirling and over-lapped cubes. It’s a two dimensional, total spectrum lollipop. Another mural of Lady Liberty, by Laguna raised Beau Stanton, a graduate of Laguna College of Art + Design (LCAD) is around the Laguna Beer Co., a tasting room in the “Hive Center.”This mural is in bold blues with orange and turquoise beams sprouting from her head with a ship and its masts as a head ornament. Altogether there are nine murals designed and painted by seven artists, both local and international who resided at [seven-degrees] while working. Wexell is excited to have the murals and would like to have more civic art. Says Wexell, “it’s not about my taste - it’s all about the art.” We are so fortunate to have Laguna Beach and it’s colorful, creative and cultural spirit in our backyard. Civic art enhances us all. It expands our horizons and fosters new connections. n

DRUMMER CHAD GRACEY STILL CANNOT QUITE BELIEVE WHAT A LONG, STRANGE TRIP HE’S HAD SINCE HE DOVE INTO THE WORLD OF ROCK MUSIC AS A TEENAGER. HE’S SLIGHTLY BEMUSED,TOO, AT THE FACT THAT THE SUMMER OF 2018 IS PROVING THAT YOU ACTUALLY CAN GO HOME AGAIN; AND BE BETTER THAN EVER IN THE PROCESS.

Gracey, the percussionist for Live, the chart-topping alternative rock band from the 1990s, is currently back with the band, banging the skins on tour through September with the three guys he grew up with in York, Pennsylvania.They’re doing the “25 Years and Counting” Tour along with Counting Crows all across America, which included a stop at the new FivePoint Amphitheatre in Irvine and one near their old hometown at HersheyPark Stadium. Gracey, who now makes his home in Orange County, is still a bit surprised that Live is together again, for that wasn’t the case for a number of years. “We had been touring actively since ‘92, pretty much all the time,” Gracey recalls of the band that began when he, Chad Taylor, Patrick Dahlheimer and Ed Kowalczyk were in high school.

In its heyday, Live sold over 20 million albums and brought their music to the world, but by 2009, things seemed to be all over for the band. “It was sort of like a dysfunctional marriage at that point. No one was really talking to each other.Towards the end, in 2009, when we started our ‘hiatus’ or whatever you want to call it at this point, there had been a breakdown in communication between Chad, Patrick and I and the singer, Ed. Chad, Patrick and I were always close and Ed was kind of an outlier towards the end there. So the break was needed,” Gracey says candidly. “There was a lot of animosity that had built up.” The three lifelong friends went on to start a new band called The Gracious Few, which met with limited success; in the meantime, Gracey met and married his wife Diana, who “was born

and raised in Dana Point/Laguna Beach area.” That lured the handsome drummer to Southern California in 2005, after a stint living in Portland. “It’s always a girl that brings you to Orange County, right?” he jokes. The couple now has three children, an eightyear-old son and twin four-year-old daughters, so Gracey isn’t planning to literally go home again, as SoCal is definitely where his heart is these days. But he’s wise enough now at age 46 to understand that you can go back to your beginnings, if you take the time to do things right. “After Live split up, Chad, Patrick and I started a bunch of businesses back in York. Actually, we bought a building in downtown York and we renovated it and made a recording studio there. And we housed a few of our other businesses


PROFILE there, too,” Gracey explains. “Until 2017, I was back in York just about once a month for at least a week or two.We started a real-estate development company that actually owns the building and the properties around it. And we started – from the ground up – a long-haul fiber-optic company that’s called United Fiber & Data.We’re running a long-haul fiber-optic line between New York City and Ashburn,Virginia.” And then in 2017, with the personal reconciliation with Kowalczyk accomplished and Live back on track, the quartet began creating music for the current tour there, back home in their York studio, together in the same spot where it all began.They have released their first song in over a decade, “Love Lounge,” recorded there and released just as their summer tour began in May. And as Gracey tells it, joining back together as Live was a bit of a snap. “We just all decided, we’ll come back together and just put all of it in the past and just start again, from where we met together in York,” he reflects. “The first meeting was cool.We sat down in the studio and just hung out and talked, and talked about our families. I had three kids in the time that Ed was gone! We just came back together, we went and had dinner, had a couple drinks.We came back to the building and played four songs like we’d never been apart, so it was really cool.” The drummer-dad-businessman adds that certain things don’t ever change, when it comes to being in a band and doing a national road tour, no matter how many years pass. “When you’re a young kid and you’re striving to be on the road and playing your music for people.Then you get a chance to do it and it is like a dream come true,” Gracey says. “Now, we know the ins and outs of the road. You just kind of know what to expect and you gear yourself up for it and you get out and do it. But the traveling, getting on the bus and going to the next city and getting the gear set up, and sitting down and playing the show, and getting off the stage and getting on the bus and going to the next city, that’s the same.We know that towards the end of the tour we’re going to be like, ‘O.k. Let’s go the hell home. I’m sick of this!’” he laughs. Of course, Chad Gracey is the first to say that his band is better in 2018 than it was when they were young guys trying to make a mark on the world. “We’ve really gotten back into the music and we’re getting along, too,” he says with a laugh, then adds, “In a lot of ways, we’re very much still the same but with just a little more worldly experience!” n

The Ultimate Way To Create An Indoor-Outdoor Living Experience BY JULIE LAUGHTON

outhern California affords us the luxury of enjoying our outdoor environment year round. Indoor-outdoor living is popular because there is nothing better than being one with nature. A well designed outdoor space increases the size of your overall living space and also provides a calming and tranquil environment to enjoy.There are many tricks to making your home feel bigger by opening it up to the exterior. Not only will your living space increase, you will have more options for the many different ways to entertain. Enjoying this kind of lifestyle while having all the wonderful comforts of your home involves careful planning. The first thing I do when I plan an outdoor space is to make sure the floor is the same color and or material on the inside as it is on the outside. Keeping the floors similar automatically increases the size of the room by continuing the interior floor to the exterior. The type of doors used between the living spaces is crucial because it creates the transition from indoors to outdoors.The French doors shown in this project demonstrate an elegant, traditional, almost romantic style, especially when they are covered in sheer drapery.When the doors are open, they give the automatic invitation for the outdoors to come in.When working with door openings that are much larger, I prefer a sliding door that disappears into the walls on either side when opened to the outdoors. The other key element to an indoor-outdoor seamless transition is the ceiling.The ceiling design inside the home needs to be consistent and complementary to the theme you are creating. In this home, the theme is traditional, timeless beach cottage.The ceiling was done in a white washed paint over eight inch wide wood planks that were purposely spaced with a small gap left uncaulked to give the illusion of an old vintage wooden floor.The ceiling was raised and vaulted to the highest possible height to make the feeling indoors grand so that when you walk outdoors, the transition is barely noticeable.This home was completely transformed from its original 1950s design to a new glorious way to live at the beach by following these design steps.

eeting Ezra Leyton in the elegant configuration of office suites, replete with panoramic vistas of Newport Harbor, that is home to his newly launched real estate firm, Marquis Signature Properties, it’s hard to believe that this impeccably dressed, visibly successful and very polished licensed broker spent his initial period in Southern California couch-surfing, courtesy of friends. “I moved to Southern California in 2002 without a job or any money,” shares Ezra. Although Ezra didn’t have much resources back then, he had attributes that were far more valuable: ambition; vision; and a strong work ethic. Sometimes, that is all you need to reach your potential, as Ezra’s success proves. eal estate professional Katie Machoskie is having the busiest summer of her career. In fact, the week we spoke, she had just closed a transaction of $25 million on a gorgeous waterfront property on Harbor Island and she had five other properties in escrow. As one of Orange County’s most dedicated, ethical and straight-talking real estate professionals, Machoskie is certainly in high demand. Machoskie has ranked in the top 1000 agents in the nation and consistently ranks in the top one percent of Newport Beach agents. In addition, she has sold more than $250 million in her own neighborhood, and was named one of REAL Trends America’s Best Real Estate Agents in 2017. As one of the founding agents of Compass in Newport Beach, Machoskie has built a team of licensed real estate professionals with geographic specialties in mind. ven though I was told that I’d love JoJo Romeo, Orange County’s preeminent luxury property realtor, I had my doubts. In the back of my head, I was thinking, “Here we go again, yet another interview with a self-absorbed, Newport Beach agent...This one was a reality TV star to boot!” I could already feel myself yawning. So, I order a triple shot grande sugar-free vanilla breve, to get my energy up for the riveting conversation I was about to have, and reviewed some notes while I waited for her at Starbucks... Right on time, she pulled up. Of course it was in a white Maserati with red leather interior. She stepped out of her “look at me, rolling status symbol”, all legs and immaculately dressed to the nines. “How cliché.” I thought. It didn’t help my prejudice that she was movie star good-looking – in a head-turning kind of way that could result in whiplash. She shot her hand and shook mine vigorously. A firm grip, looked me in the eyes, knew my name and had done her homework on me... Not what I expected... This interview quickly transformed into a conversation with what seemed to be a long-lost friend, which was riveting (this time minus the sarcasm) The old adage, “Don’t judge a book by its cover”, never rang truer, than with JoJo Romeo. She is an amazing person. Yes, she is stunning on the her exterior in a very obvious and clas-

REAL ESTATE PROS sic way which we all notice. But it is the content of her character that melted my heart. She was humble and vulnerable, funny and smart. She has had some tough knocks along the meandering road of life and she owned up to many regrets, but her mantra “AFOG,” another freaking opportunity for growth, the acronym she coined as her guiding principle through life, has enabled her to invert any negative situation and turn it into a positive. For this go-getter, obstacles are merely learning experiences to grow from. “When something bad happens, I am not going to marinate in it or play the ‘poor me’ role,” asserts this single mother of five, whose busy life leaves no time to ruminate. Jojo insists every experience leads to an opportunity to activate. In fact her position in the title business led her to her current role as a leading real estate agent at Surterre Properties. “As a Title Rep, I worked with many agents and recognized and pursued the opportunity to embark on a successful career in the real estate industry.” Once Jojo obtained her license and aligned with an agency, she confidently began knocking on doors in search of listings. It only took three knocks to get her first client, resulting in a $6 million dual transaction. From there, she hit the ground running. By the end of her first year as an agent, she closed $25 million. Year two resulted in $50 million of transactions. In her third year she amassed $75 million in closings. The Cloistered Collection’s Inspired Antiques and Unique Art Corona del Mar’s new boutique space offers European antique furniture and art for interior designers and their clients BY BETH FHANER

H

ome design enthusiasts have much to celebrate with the recently opened Cloistered Collection, a beautiful, airy and elegant boutique space tucked off Carnation Street in Corona del Mar. Featuring exquisite European antique furniture and unique decor, the shop caters to interior designers and individual clients alike. Georgia Vanites Ingram, a retired attorney, decided to open the Cloistered Collection after living in England for nearly five years. During that time she traveled extensively throughout Europe and attended famous furniture markets and antique fairs in search of extraordinary treasures. With its grand opening in early February, the Cloistered Collection offers architecturally interesting items ranging from a gilded set of church spire fragments on metal stands (great

for a fireplace or table setting) to a set of curly ram horns to a richly carved, late 18th-century Gustavian sofa. Everything in the shop is for sale, and most of the furniture is imported from Sweden—all considered antique (over 100 years old) or vintage pieces. Housing 18th- and 19th-century Swedish, Gustavian, French and British treasures, in addition to some unique Mediterranean pieces and the artwork and organic creations of local artists, the inviting shop boasts an abundance of natural light and a graceful, stylish vibe. On display during a recent afternoon visit were Swedish Griffin Chairs (circa 1840), a Rococo Swedish Clock (circa 1770), 19th-century Gustavian chests, various antique books, and 19th-century French urns as well as other fabulous furniture pieces and accessories.

As Ingram found herself especially drawn to 18th and 19th-century Swedish period pieces that possess light tones yet are substantial, elegant and unfussy, she knew that the pieces would work perfectly as accents and statement pieces in California’s sunny homes in a variety of architectural styles. “The clientele in Newport Beach and Corona del Mar is pretty sophisticated and wants a layered look, and my pieces lend themselves to sunny, light California homes, especially a coastal beach house,” notes Ingram. If Ingram doesn’t have a certain piece that a designer or client is looking for, she’s able to source it with the extensive contacts she’s made abroad. Additionally, she’s able to assist clients with any placement and design needs. Any designers or home decorators who are looking for that statement piece to give a room a unique feeling will find exactly what they’re searching for with Ingram’s expertise. Future plans for the design business include bringing in a few African pieces, and Ingram admits that she would eventually like to expand to have items from all over the world. When asked what she would most like her Orange County clientele to know about her new endeavor, Ingram says, “Cloistered Collection offers high-quality furniture and unique decor that can work well in any kind of interior. Also, we’re able to source all over the world and help with placement and design.” With its thoughtfully curated mix of timeless antiques and unique art, as well as its additional design services, Corona del Mar’s new boutique space is, indeed, a most welcome addition to coastal Orange County.

Jonathons Coastal Living Creating spaces that merge functionality with pure joy BY SUSAN IRBY

our space reflects who you are. It makes you feel good and speaks to others about the essence of you,” says Jamie Bernal, co-owner of Jonathons Coastal Living showroom and design. To experience Jonathons Coastal Living (intentionally spelled sans the apostrophe “s”), is to meander through a welcoming beach cottage or luxury ocean front dwelling that is part retail and part full-service architectural design and styling. The expansive showroom located just off Euclid in Fountain Valley is open to the public and they sell right off the floor to the public and trade.You can also make an appointment with one of their stylists for a full-service design build. “Our design service is the bulk of our business,” explains Jamie. “But we are a unique mix of interior design, retail sales, and now, full architectural design builds.” One offering of particular interest is an accessory install. Stylists come to the home, gain an understanding of the desired look and feel, access what is needed and return ready to complete the room makeover. “From bath bombs to bath soaking tubs, we do it all,” shares Jamie. “Just leave a key and come home later to everything all set up.” Now in its seventeenth year, Jonathons was named for her dad who owned an antique and

collectibles store in Cypress; Jamie grew up in nearby Long Beach. “My parents’ store was filled with gifts, gourmet foods and antiques. I fell in love with everything for the home,” says Jamie. Then, she met her husband, Franco, who grew up in the furniture upholstery business.Together Jamie and Franco were a match made in furnishing success.They married in June and in October of that same year, took a leap of faith and opened a 10,000 square foot showroom officially launching Jonathons Coastal Living.“We were and still are a grass roots family business,” Jamie said, having started in Orange County and now expanded to customers in Los Angeles, Palm Springs and as far as Hawaii.“I’d have to say that my husband and I make a great team in that he has always had the big picture furnishings vision and I have always been more in the details,” smiles Jamie. Throughout the years, Jamie and her husband have developed relationships with local artists and galleries to provide distinctive art pieces for homes and as well, they do a lot of special ordering. Most recently, customers have come to them for both small and large design builds that include window coverings, wallpapers, flooring and furnishings which is the heart of their newest addition, Jonathons Studio, specializing in architectural design and project management.

“Jonathons Studio is a natural extension of our core business of design,” said Jamie. Asking versatile questions from “how do you see yourself using this space” to “what kind of food and drinks do you love” allows the Jonathons’ design team to create functionality and joy in the home. “Working with someone on design is an intimate experience,” shares Jamie. “Our passion is in helping clients create beautiful spaces that they are proud of and can enjoy.”Working with budgets of all price points, Jamie attributes personal service to their success in addition to remaining price competitive, explaining that while it is easy to find products, especially in today’s environment, selecting and having an eye for putting it all together is an “entirely different story.” “We are a ‘people’ business,” exclaims Jamie, “that’s why we got into this business and that is why we stay. Seeing clients’ faces light up with excitement when they step into their new space brings us a fulfilling happiness – a special happiness that we get to experience every day. atching Julie Laughton at one of her worksites, imposingly clad in her de rigeur uniform of jeans, boots and a crisply starched white shirt, commanding the reverence of a crew of workers that would intimidate the most manly of men, makes you want to immediately put her in charge of your remodel - maybe even your life.The highly successful owner of a construction company that employs over 50 workers, full time and sub, is impressively skilled, talented and hard working - and she demands those attributes from everyone on her team. With Laughton at the helm of your home redesign, everything from the cement foundation to the fabrics of your cushions will be done right.This licensed and credentialed contractor/architect/space planner/landscaper/ designer always has her client’s back. “I protect my clients more than they protect themselves,” says Laughton, who recognizes that contracting work can entail serious liabilities and must be done correctly every step of the way. Laughton is all about high quality workmanship and, in her nearly 30 years in the industry, has never been called back to make adjustments. Many contractors, in contrast, are cited for defects. Organizing space properly requires understanding the owner’s living and lifestyle needs. Although certain features, such as natural light and airy, oversized rooms, are universally incorporated into all her projects. After function comes aesthetics. “The design and colors have to be right. When a space looks right, it feels right.”When it comes to looking right, less is more according to Laughton, who insists on purging and cleansing

spaces of unnecessary clutter as her starting point. Looking right also has an element of subjective taste to it and that is another one of Laughton’s hallmarks. According to Laughton, currently the prevalent trend veers towards modern and clean lines. Most often the request is for very light-hued or even white natural materials such as Calacatta marble. But there are still plenty who favor the traditional style and display a preference for rich dark woods.Whatever the client’s taste, Laughton will deliver a finished look that satisfies. “I had a client whose home was an elegant Tudor style estate and he wanted to maintain the integrity of the home in the remodel. He didn’t think I could do what he envisioned. But with my arsenal of master craftsman, that include some of the best available carvers and finishers, I created exactly what he wanted,” Laughton says, admitting that this particular project is among her favorites. When it comes to bringing a client’s vision to fruition, Laughton can be versatile in her creations and even enjoys using striking materials, such as a

vibrant marine quartz, to intersperse a pop of color. Laughton’s well-trained eye and instinctive understanding of what will work best, along with her creativity, enables her to give clients far more than they expect. “I see what others don’t and then I create it.”

A

lthough the infamous mortgage crisis occurred over ten years ago, and OC home prices have rebounded past pre-recession highs, banks and most other major lending institutions are still imposing the stringent standards devised in response to the decade old occurrence.Two years of income verification, strict loan to value guidelines, and specified debt asset ratios are the standard criteria traditionally used to grant home loans at market lending rates. While this formula may satisfy regulatory agencies, it has created limited opportunities for many qualified buyers.To address this void, Jeff Edwards, Partner of Insignia Mortgage, with offices in Beverly Hills and Corona del Mar, is ready to provide non-traditional criteria lending. “There are many reasonable situations that create an alternative financial picture for clients who make reliable borrowers,” says Edwards. “We are adept at evaluating an applicant’s ability to make payments on the loan,” he explains, citing Insignia’s zero default record on nearly two billion dollars of loan originations since its inception six years ago. “We don’t just look at tax returns for income verification. People who are self-employed, foreign citizens, or beneficiaries of irrevocable trusts are some of the examples of loan applicants who present as solid candidates upon further inspection of their ability to make payments.” Loan to value ratios can also skew the depiction of a borrower’s viability, according to Edwards who often uses cross collateralization to qualify clients. “It’s about looking at someone’s total net worth. We are confident that our borrowers would sell an asset before defaulting on a loan,” Edwards explains. As long as Edwards can confirm an applicant’s ability to make the payments, he will work to secure the loan in line with the market rates, currently between three and four percent. Many of his clients present complicated loan scenarios such as 1031 exchanges, Foreign National transactions, or clients who have recently sold a company with large assets yet offer no

traditional income. Insignia can even accommodate clients with a recent credit event, according to Edwards who successfully secures funding for complex loans. I

’ve always been inspired by the idea that food is a universal language that brings people together. I’ve been fortunate to receive diverse exposure to international cuisine, working with chefs like Gordon Ramsay and Jean-Georges Vongerichten who taught me the technique of utilizing new flavors alongside unique ingredients. The Charred Calamari dish featured at Cucina Enoteca represents that philosophy. This dish is simple in approachability but elevated in technique. Sourcing high-quality ingredients such as Monterey squid and locally grown tomatoes is key to creating this fresh charred calamari dish that rides the tightrope of intense flavors with a balance of sweet tangerine, savory romesco, acidity with preserved lemon, and an olive and tomato umami. I also incorporate a specially procured fish sauce which really ties in the influence Asian, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisines—a true Southern California cultural mash-up.

Charred Calamari with Hazelnut Romesco 1 lb squid, cleaned, split in half, marinated (recipe include) 1 heirloom tomato, 1” diced 3 tangerines, cut in wedges 1 tbsp Kalamata olives, sliced thinly 1 tsp preserved lemon rinds, thinly sliced hazelnut romesco (recipe included) 1 cup arugula leaves, as garnish In a heavy grill pan or cast-iron pan, add 1 tbsp olive oil until smoking hot. In small batches, carefully add in the marinated squid, pressing down to char the surface. Cook for about 1 minute. In a mixing bowl, combine tomatoes, tangerines, olives, and preserved lemons. Once squid is charred, toss in to the mixing bowl and toss ingredients together. Season with salt and lemon juice, if needed. Divide the hazelnut romesco between four plates, adding as much or as little as desired. Carefully divide the squid salad between the four plates. Garnish with arugula leaves. Drizzle with lemon juice and olive oil to finish.

¼ cup toasted hazelnuts 2 tbsp grated parmesan cheese 1 cup diced piquillo peppers ¼ cup extra virgin olive oil 1 tbsp sherry vinegar 1 tbsp chopped garlic 1 tbsp chopped parsley 1 tbsp smoked paprika 1 tbsp lemon Juice salt and pepper to taste Toast the hazelnuts until golden. Add everything to the food processor except for olive oil. Puree until chunky. Drizzle in olive oil to emulsify. Season with salt and lemon juice to taste.

Marinade ¼ cup brown sugar ¾ cup sugar ½ cup Three Crabs brand fish sauce 5 cloves garlic 2 stalks lemongrass (chopped) In a heavy saucepan, combine both sugars, fish sauce, garlic and lemon grass. Bring to a simmer over low heat until sugars are dissolved. Let cool. Once cool, strain the marinade over the calamari. Marinade in the refrigerator for 1-6 hours.

Magic Johnson Inspires United Way Supporters

E

arvin “Magic” Johnson’s touching address hit home with the nearly 1,000 strong attendees of the Annual Women’s Philanthropy Fund Breakfast benefitting women and children in need. Speaking up for the children of Orange County, the beloved former NBA All-Star, commended the crowd for giving back to the community and helping children succeed in school and in life. The morning event, held at Hotel Irvine, raised more than $600,000 to support United Way’s initiatives targeting education, health, housing and income challenges facing women and children in Orange County. Over the past 15 years, the Women’s Philanthropy Fund has raised more than $35 million to support various women’s and children’s programs here in Orange County. As the organization’s most important event of the year, the funds raised allow United Way to implement programs with demonstrable impact for underserved populations.

Bar set ups provided by HB Spirits, Libre Tequila, Sangria Red Skirt, Blue Marble Cocktails, and Domaine STE Michelle Sparkling ensured an evening of ample libations for celebrating the successful launch of the magazine’s premiere revamped issue. he magnificent New Hampton Manor, a one-of-a-kind beachfront estate, provided the elegant setting for a Community Collaboration Charity Event benefiting Miracles For Kids. Over 300 guests enjoyed small bites, wine and cocktails, musical entertainment, and boutique pop-up shopping opportunities at the exclusive private party hosted by Joli Magazine and JoJo Romeo & Associates of Surterre Properties. The festive atmosphere at one of the most majestic residences in Newport Beach, spanning over 100 feet of sandy ocean frontage, was enhanced with live music by Will Donato & the Art of Sax and open bar hosted by HB Spirits and Sangria Red Skirt. The crowd mingled and enjoyed bites courtesy of Anders Catering, Balboa Lily’s, Blue Water Grill, Boathouse Collective and Confectious Pastry Shop. Informal modeling was provided by Beach Candy swimwear, one of the participating vendors with a portion of proceeds offered to the partnering charity, Miracles For Kids. Craft Distillers Get Creative SPIRITED ENTREPRENEURS SHAKE-UP COCKTAIL CULTURE WITH NEW BOUTIQUE BRANDS BY BETH FHANER

E

ver since the Prohibition-era—with its bootlegging and proliferation of speakeasies—folks have been inventive when it comes to producing, selling and imbibing in alcohol. From the days of bathtub gin and rum-running to large-scale distillation facilities that are in the business of producing huge batches of alcohol for mass consumption to today’s craft distillers who are creating highly refined boutique spirits, cocktail culture has long played a distinct role in our nation’s history. Following the microbrewing and craft beer movement of the last two decades, micro-distilling (or craft distilling) has become the latest trend in libations. In recent years, the spirits marketplace has seen an emergence of small, independent distillers who are creating boutique brands that appeal to today’s sophisticated, sipping consumer. Here, we take a look at three spirited entrepreneurs who are carving out a niche with their own innovative brands.


A Legend Launches a New Line of Whiskey THE NOBEL PRIZE-WINNING, singer-songwriter Bob Dylan has ventured into the spirits business with his own signature line of whiskeys called Heaven’s Door. Dylan partnered with entrepreneur Marc Bushala, CEO of Spirits Investment Partnership (SIP) and one of the original co-founders of Angel’s Envy Bourbon, to produce his collection of American whiskey at a distillery located in an old church. A product that was years in the making and involved experimenting with countless blends, Heaven’s Door whiskey is finished in oak barrels from Vosges, France, and air-dried for three years. Launched in May, Dylan’s

initial trio of small-batch whiskey includes a straight rye whiskey, a double barrel whiskey and a Tennessee straight bourbon whiskey. The moniker of Dylan’s whiskey line pays homage to one of his most famous recordings. And befitting Dylan’s elusive nature, the folk music icon’s signature is printed on the inside of the bottle’s label and is only visible once the bottle has been emptied. Each bottle also features Dylan’s welded iron gates that he created in his Black Buffalo Ironworks studio from various objects found on American farms and scrap yards throughout his travels. “I’ve been traveling for decades, and I’ve been able to try some of the best spirits that the world of whiskey has to offer.This is great whiskey,” Dylan said in a statement to The New York Times. Next year, Heaven’s Door will introduce the limited-edition Bootleg Series (with ceramic bottles showcasing Dylan’s oil and watercolor paintings), in addition to opening a Nashville distillery and brand experience center in a 140-year-old church.

Earth-Friendly, Single Serve Cocktails FOR ALAN MILLER, founder and CEO of Blue Marble Cocktails, the catalyst behind launching his business of creating single serve cocktails involved a favorite pastime of yachting and the frustration of having to keep a bar stocked with various alcohols and mixers.When Miller couldn’t find the type of ready-to-drink cocktail he was looking for in the marketplace, he decided to simply create it. Miller began formulating his vision for his company in 2015, and he drew further inspiration from the iconic image of our planet taken in 1972 by NASA’s Apollo 17 crew. After seeing the image of the pristine earth, Miller knew that he wanted to create a product that was both high quality and earth-friendly.
