JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

fter 25 years of successfully publishing with partners in Orange County, last year I found myself at a crossroads in my career. I’d known for some time that our community of readers and advertisers were ready for something more meaningful with substantive content that would speak to them. I had the vision however, I needed to assemble a talented team to give birth to this dream. I am blessed to have, what I call the ‘dream team’ on board. First there is Rita Goldberg, our Editor in Chief and long time friend and associate. She has many years of editorial experience and we worked together in the past on several publishing projects. She said yes before I even finished my sentence on trying to sell her on the idea. ‘WOW’ is all I can say about that first phone call. Then there is Lee Offenhauer, our Art Director and my good friend for over 20 years. Lee and I worked together many years ago. Lee has over 30 years of experience in the publishing industry and is the best visionary of art design that I have ever been honored to work with. Lee also

didn’t miss a beat on saying yes to me. Another ‘WOW’ moment. Then I reached out to Cherelle Reaves-Berrard our Associate Publisher and my good friend. Cherelle brings with her many years of experience in publishing and in luxury event planning. She is very entrenched in the community and also stepped up to the plate without hesitation, and said, “Let’s do this.” ‘WOW’ again! There have been many more talented people working tirelessly behind the scenes to give birth to this publication - Joli Magazine - the art of refined living. Please delve into your first edition of Joli Magazine. We feel this publication is full of content that will speak to each and every one of you and make a positive impact in your lives. Be sure to read our celebrity profile cover story featuring Missi Pyle. This talented actress shared her inspiring Dream Come True story, which certainly resonated with me since this issue is my ‘dream come true.’

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

have lived in Coastal Orange County practically my entire adult life. I raised three children in Newport Beach, sat on the board of numerous philanthropies, and even served in a civic capacity as City Arts Commissioner. I consider myself an ingrained member of this community and have always thought of myself as “in-the-know.” But as I sift through countless press releases clueing me to new additions, I realize that change occurs so rapidly, it’s impossible to know everything that is going on right in our own backyard. That is why a magazine dedicated to highlighting the best life has to offer is vital to a vibrant population seeking to enjoy. Joli Magazine is designed to provide a well curated collection of content and serve as the conduit between this community and its residents. Note the tagline, “The Art of Refined Living,” and you will get an idea of this publication’s purpose. Even from the time the editorial line up was conceived to the time of pre-press production, new venues opened for business. One long awaited addition is The Lot, Fashion Island’s new ultra luxurious cinema and dine spot. New restaurants seem to be popping up constantly. If you are looking for a couple of great new dining options, or feel like hosting your own private dinner party, we’ve got you covered in this issue that offers cover-to-cover coverage of all the things that will inspire you to enjoy the coveted lifestyle of our beautiful coastal hometown. Bourbon Steak is one of the premier newly opened dining establishments reviewed in this issue. Founded by acclaimed Chef Michael Mina, this gem of a restaurant takes dining to a whole new level. Entertainers, seeking to host a fabulous dinner party will find inspiration in our Chef ’s Table column, featuring a springtime recipe from local chef, David Wilhelm. Looking for new ideas to revamp your cooking environment? gant public settings offered in Coastal Southern California. If you haven’t strolled the Civic Center’s beautiful grounds, featuring the Peter Walker designed Sculpture Garden, add that activity to your list.We were so impressed with the breathtaking vista, we decided to use this venue as the backdrop for this issue’s fashion shoot. In case you don’t know, Newport Beach gets over seven million visitors each year.We are fortunate to live in this world renowned locale. So be sure to get out and enjoy the best of our own hometown, which we will continue to feature in every issue. Stay Tuned…

I

n its rich 52-year history, Laguna Art-A-Fair has featured the works of acclaimed artists from around the globe. A juried fine art show, Art-A-Fair is unique among Laguna Beach art events in that it doesn’t have residency restrictions which draws a diverse group of both artists and art forms. As a member of the artists cooperative, each Art-A-Fair participant plays a role in producing the annual exhibit that draws thousands of art enthusiasts to scenic Laguna Canyon every summer. Known as “The Gem in the Canyon,” Art-A-Fair showcases over 120 art exhibits and a variety of art-related workshops in an enchanting courtyard setting where visitors can enjoy gourmet cuisine, fine wine, specialty beers, spirits and live entertainment. Art-A-Fair exhibitors feature original works across all art mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastel, charcoal, pencil, drawing, mixed media, photography, ceramics, wood, glass, jewelry, gourds, leather, sculpture and digital art. Serious Art Lovers Design Homes Around Their Collections Art-A-Fair has achieved great success over the years, but the 2018 exhibit will add a creative new dimension - help festival goers visualize how fine art can be showcased in their own homes. According to luxury real estate experts, 2018 brings an eclectic combination of high-end elegant elements with strong influences from nature and technology. And a house with art in it helps art lovers express their unique personalities. Event producers Gina Waggener and Jo Beth Prudhomme are behind the innovative new home design concept which is garnering support from top interior home brands tied to the latest design trends in kitchen, flooring, lighting, wall finishes and furnishings. The creative duo teamed up with interior design expert Nancy Vengoechea of Vengo Design to create an expansive luxury home display and home design related one-on-one consultations. Luxury home design display sponsor UCLux. com Real Estate, a division of Union Choice Enterprises, will offer advice on how redesign can increase home values along with options for utilizing home equity for improvements. A prominently displayed design wall will offer visitors an opportunity to explore the latest in luxury redesign as it relates to fine art. Both the display and workshops by Vengoechea will showcase how top-tier furnishings and interior design have long been used to sell properties and how developers and brokers often turn to fine art for that extra layer of je ne sais quoi - a quality that cannot be described or named easily. Studio Workshops include Beautiful Kitchens, Magic of Color, Planning the Space, Furniture Selection, Developing the Concept, Great Windows,Walls and Flooring, plus others. “Our new home design element has brought renewed energy and a refreshing outlook among this year’s artists,” says Art-A-Fair president Michael Cahill. Prospective Art-A-Fair artists are vetted on Jury Day in early February. Along with seeking a balance for the exhibit, the jury of professional fine artists and master crafts-persons look for excellence in conception, execution, presentation and a high level of creativity and technical competence. Popular local artists return to the festival this year along with international artists that will exhibit for the first time.Thursdays are VIP sponsored nights with special behind the scene artist tours and specialty appetizer and cocktail offerings.

The Vengo Design Wall will be an opportunity for visitors to explore the latest in luxury redesign as it relates to fine art.

JOURNEY

Springtime in Paris and London BY RITA GOLDBERG

A London stAy typically finds its significance in the purpose of business over pleasure, or as a quick stop-over city en route to a more exotic locale. And while Paris exudes the kind of whimsical buoyancy American travelers can only chalk up to as je ne sais quoi, we’ve all seen one too many beret adorning, baguette toting, Eiffel Tower selfies destined to brand Paris as a cliché.The French did coin the term, after all. However, these overlooked staples are worth revisiting as they offer the perfect combination of never ending activity in two of Europe’s most elegant bustling capitals. In a world abundant with rich, diverse culture, filled with more beautiful destinations than anyone could ever get to in a lifetime, there is a reason Paris and London stamps find their way into any modern traveler’s passport. Simply put, these cities are significant and offer major perspective of the many before us who paved the world we live in today. From renowned artists who populate the walls of just about every world class museum (Monet, Cezanne, Manet, Degas, Matisse to name a few) to rock and roll legends who continue to maintain world wide relevance (Beatles,The Who, Pink Floyd, David Bowie, Elton John - should I keep going?) to literary greats (Shakespeare, Dickens, Austin, Bronte - basically your high school and college lit reading list authors) the cultural icons we have come to appreciate most are rooted in these cities. What’s more, these two cities combined contain fascinating history, awe-inspiring architecture, unsurpassed theater and award winning culinary options. Endless landmark attractions are available to tour but to truly savor these cities, make time to roam aimlessly and take in the modern day sights, sounds, aromas and general vibe of these intoxicating locales.

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

LONDON After you have toured your selected destinations, (The Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, if in season, and Westminster Abbey should be on your list) take time to spontaneously explore the quaint districts that make up this vibrant city. Piccadilly Circus, Leicester Square and Covent Garden replete with pubs, eateries, boutiques and street performers, are among the neighborhoods that provide a wanderer’s nirvana, offering the best of London’s street scenes. London is known for theater so be sure to secure tickets for at least a couple of performances. If you like to experience the lesser known, off radar shows,The Other Palace Theater provides a creative hub for new and experimental works worth seeing. Tickets for the tried and true classics such as Les Mis and Phantom are typically available. Or plan ahead and score Hamilton tickets at the Victoria Palace. High Tea is another one of those British experiences that should be incorporated into your plans. There are plenty of elegant options to enjoy this traditional respite. Harrods, where the international jet set convenes, offers a favorite option for the classic version, especially when combined with an afternoon of shopping. For stand alone, five-star experience head to Claridge’s which has been catering to royalty and doing it right for nearly 150 years. If you want to try out a newer tea venue,The Mirror Room at The Rosewood, which opened last year to rave reviews, offers a memorable afternoon tea service. When you are ready to explore nightlife off the beaten track, make your way to Shoreditch where rows of dimly lit bars offer lively music and energizing crowds. The Hoxton is a perfect spot to sip a cocktail and take in London’s up and coming arts district alongside its trend forging populace. Trains from London to Paris depart several times daily making this an easy way to embark on the next leg of your trip. Book ahead for best rates. PARIS If you are inclined to tour the attractions, there is the Eiffel Tower, with its breathtaking panoramic view,The Louvre, with the famed Mona Lisa, and the Palace of Versailles. But of course, there is so much more. Cafés with their pastries, macarons, crepes and frothy cappuccinos, boutiques filled with finely crafted, fashionable finds, and quaint winding streets that always lead to somewhere worth being. One area to stroll through is the village of Montmartre. Perched above the general city landscape, the Basilica of Sacre-Coeur provides a welcoming landmark. From there, you will feel like you stepped back in time as you navigate the cobblestone streets and ancient architecture that defines this region, peppered with cafés, shops and artists offering to sketch your likeness. Paris is known for its cuisine. Just as London theater is mandatory, so is a superb French dining experience. La Closerie des Lilas frequented by intellectuals and artists, most notably Ernest Hemingway, should be on your dining list. The menu is filled with traditional French fare including all the favorites such as foie gras and escargot. The wine selections, with availability from

renowned French wine regions, ensures the perfect pairing with each course. If your appetite veers to the more swanky, make your way to Hotel Costes for an aperitif or gourmet dining experience in a regally inspired setting. Save room for the to-die-for cheesecake, rumored to inspire at least one celebrity to board a London bound private plane for the sole purpose of satisfying a craving for this much tweeted about creamy delicacy. Paris is also known for its fashion. Many top designers are French so be sure to make time to shop the well known classics that include Chanel, Yves Saint Laurent, and Hermes, as well as the cutting edge, newcomer wares from the likes of Christell Kocher, Jacquemus, and Christophe Lemaire. While there are endless boutiques to browse, you can pop into Galeries Lafayette, for a great array of fabulous finds under one roof. If shopping in Paris feels like the ultimate cliche, well c’est la vie. Loading up on those enviable treasures will surely inspire your favorite postworthy selfie. n SPRING 2018 | JOLI MAGAZINE

H

ard to believe that just one mile from the congested freeway, is a secluded winding road leading to a luscious private 12-acre oasis, replete with palms, aromatic citrus trees, and bubbling hot mineral pools. And that’s not all this local Southern California spa has to offer those seeking an indulgent escape to a day of pampering. There are over 17 treatments and salon services available to try, nutrient rich mud wraps, moisturizing therapies, and more. The on site restaurant offers delicious, healthy spa cuisine and private cabanas are available for pre and post-services relaxation.Water aerobics classes are also offered, for anyone whose day of nirvana requires at least one work out. For over 150 years, Glen Ivy Hot Springs has been welcoming spa goers who understand the value of rejuvenating treatments for body and mind. This past year an expansive multi-million dollar renovation and the addition of new services make this spa even more enticing. One of the newest treatments introduced recently is the Quartz Massage. This therapeutic service is done on a specially designed table filled with ground quartz particles. The effect is akin to laying on a soft bed of sand, allowing your body to meld into the naturally created contours for a pressure-free sensation while being massaged. Each therapy treatment begins with a consultation to ensure a customized experience. Mineral infused pools and nutrient rich muds, such as the ones offered on-site, are natural phenomena. Hot springs have been recognized for their therapeutic and healing properties for thousands of years. The heated waters open the pores so the abundant, naturally infused minerals, that may include calcium, magnesium and other regenerative properties, can be directly absorbed for effective penetration. The physical benefits of spa and massage are obvious. The emotional and spiritual advantages of spending a day in this idyllic environment will quickly become apparent. A day at Glen Ivy will be savored long after your return.

Missi Pyle:

Location Corona Del Mar, California

Dream it and it will Come True BY JENNY PETERS

For actress Missi Pyle, life has been something of a dream. Born in Houston and raised in Memphis, she first had dreams of becoming an actress, hopes that were fulfilled pretty quickly for the statuesque blonde. SPRING 2018 | JOLI MAGAZINE

PROFILE “When I started out after drama school – I went to North Carolina School of the Arts – and when I was done, I went to New York. I got an agency right away. I was signed with Paradigm and I mean I went out for everything,” Pyle recalls. And her first film started her off with a bang, as she booked a small role in “As Good As It Gets,” opposite Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt in that Academy Award-winning movie.

42

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

In the 20 years since, Pyle’s performing dreams have pretty much all come true. She’s played iconic roles in enduring movies like “Galaxy Quest,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and the Best Picture Oscar winner “The Artist”; starred in numerous television series (she’s currently a recurring character on “Mom”); and even had a rock band for a while, known as Smith & Pyle, along with actress/singer Shawnee Smith.

Gorgeous, funny and successful, it might seem that Missi Pyle really had it all, but there was one thing missing in her life as she entered her forties. “I always wanted to be a mom, but I just wasn’t really sure when it would happen. I got married and decided, ‘Oh, I’m ready to have a family.’ I had several miscarriages. I wasn’t able to carry a pregnancy to full term and I was just really devastated by it,” she candidly admits. Divorced and wondering what the future had in store for her, Missi and her best friend, fellow actress Christina Moore, decided to ask the universe for some help. “I do believe that whatever you put out there you do get back. We would make these dream boards once a year and we had a look at the dream boards from a couple years ago and mine had little babies all over it,” Pyle remembers, as she pauses to answer a question from her now two-year-old adopted daughter Zooey. “That’s kind of cool, isn’t it? I always imagined I would have like five kids and when it doesn’t quite go that way you’re like, ‘Huh.’ It took me a long time to decide to adopt a baby on my own, but finally one day I just thought, ‘Oh, I really want to do this myself.’” Putting the dream out there resulted in motherhood for her; and, somewhat surprisingly, since becoming a mother, Pyle has been working more than ever before. That’s pretty amazing, considering that up until recently, actresses who hit 40 pretty much saw their options dry up. “Since she was born, I have had so much less time to worry about my career,” she muses, “and therefore the time that I spend on it is so much more concentrated.Yet I’ve been working a lot more than I did before she was born, and the work that I’m doing is better. Babies bring good luck!” And perhaps the changing climate in Tinseltown is part of Pyle’s burgeoning career, which includes a role in the blockbuster hit movie “Jumanji:Welcome to the Jungle,” two more new films – “Traffik” and “Director’s Cut” – coming soon and a leading role in “Impulse,” the new YouTube Red streaming series. “I think the whole Me Too,Time’s Up movement has been extraordinary. That women are able to come forward and tell their stories and people are actually hearing them is extraordinary. And things have changed in many ways,” she says. “At my TV show [“Impulse”], eight of the ten episodes were directed by women. These are women who couldn’t get jobs before, now they’re swamped with offers. It’s really a great time to be a female in Hollywood and I think that that is the main thing that’s come from

the Me Too movement. For that I say, ‘Hooray. Finally.’ As a woman in her forties, I have worked with more women since I turned 40, in this short amount of time, than I ever have in my life.” The timing of this sea change in Hollywood couldn’t be better, for Missi Pyle has a new agenda for the next dream board she’ll make with Christina Moore, who now lives right next door with her husband on what they call their “hippie compound.” “I’ve been thinking about directing myself,” Pyle reveals. “And once Zooey goes to school, that’s something that I’d really like to start doing. I’ve put it in the ear of the people on my TV show that I’d like to maybe direct

t

something, if we do a second season or a third season.” There’s that, as well as her more personal goals, too. “I’d also like to grow my own food, to learn how to be a little bit more self-sufficient. I’d like to go off to a world where I’m maybe a little less phone dependent and maybe a little bit more off the grid, if that’s possible, and to show my daughter how to do that and just try to be someone who’s a little more self reliant. And hopefully some love will pop in there for me too. I’m a seeker, so I’m trying to figure out, I just need to let it go and let it come to me.” And simply dream a little bit more, as well. n

HOME DESIGN

The Trend For Home Design is Creating a Zen-Like Atmosphere BY JULIE LAUGHTON

T

oday everyone has a busy and hectic life so the goal is to be able to create an environment in your home that allows you to hit the reset button. As a designer, my job is to create the ultimate soothing and functional retreat customized for each individual homeowner. The space should be calming, clean and pure. My philosophy is “It all starts with a good plan.” When remodeling and creating a clutter-free atmosphere, the first thing I ask the client to do is to purge unneeded items from their space.Your entire home must flow and be clear to function properly. The complete transformation of the space involves all of your senses. The subtle use of color probably evokes the most emotion in each room. All of the organic colors that come from nature make the environment so much more soothing and natural to be in. Using organic materials, soft colors and avoiding clutter enables you to have your cherished surroundings. Whether you have a large or small space, it’s about opening it up and doing the proper planning so the entire room functions perfectly. The space you live in and use daily should be easy and effortless to be in.This particular kitchen was done with a warm organic driftwood-theme by using custom cabinetry finishes to compliment and coordinate with the stone slab countertops. You will notice the designs of the countertops, flooring and cabinets have clean lines and simple shapes.Through the use of rich organic colors, the entire room evokes a feeling that is welcoming and instantly relaxing to be in.The warmth of the real wood flooring under your feet also gives an incredible organic tactile feeling as you move through the room. Lighting is crucial and it’s also designed in advance. The best lighting is a combination of natural sunlight, overhead can lights and accent lamps. This master bedroom is flooded with light during the day from French doors and the round window up high. In the evening, the can lights should be dimmed to a lower level. The table lamp and floor lamp can be turned on individually for room accent lighting. The lamps on the

56

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

nightstands are controlled separately for each person. When you have a room with a vaulted ceiling this high, it’s always a good idea to have the ability to fill the room with light evenly. All of the installed lighting is a backup to the natural organic sunlight. Keeping your space clear is an ongoing process. It’s basically the same maintenance you

would do for yourself to enhance your spiritual and positive well-being. Creating the ultimate Zen-like living environment involves good planning and several steps designed to eliminate stress and add tranquility to your daily life. It’s all about the perfect balance. www.julielaughton.com.

TOAST COAST OF THE

This Newport Beach home is open, bright and ready for some modernized mid-century fun Written by Wendy Bowman Presented by The Summer Perry Group at Surterre Properties Photography by Tim Krueger

HOME

hen local builder and HGTV star Scott Cross first laid eyes on the warm and inviting residence that previously stood at 1406 Antigua Way in Newport Beach, he was inspired by the original bricks comprising its oversized fireplace and entry wall. With the help of architect Benjamin Stevens, he went on to tear down the 1960’s abode while allowing those memorable blocks to dictate the style of a new structure. Fast-forward to today, and a recently built mid-century modern masterpiece now rests on the site in the established subdivision of Baycrest/Dover Shores. Think a light-filled entry way flanked by the aforementioned wall and an open living space sporting the fireplace, as well as custom furnishings and art curated by Blackband Design and a swath of familyfriendly amenities from the inside-out. As an additional reminder of the past, a preserved olive tree casts its shadow on the house’s facade to serve as an impromptu piece of art. “I really pushed the builder to create an indoor-outdoor space where the entire family could entertain and enjoy the pool, barbecue and all-around great Southern California weather,” says real estate agent Summer Perry, who regularly collaborates with Cross and is co-listing the custom two-level, five-bedroom residence with Jessie Holechek (both of The Summer Perry Group at Surterre Properties). “I imagine young children riding their bikes in the driveway on the weekends as the parents brew their coffee and make breakfast, the family dog lying lazily on the grass just waiting for the ball to be tossed to him, and all of the neighbors coming over to lounge by the pool, watch Sunday football games and barbecue some steaks for dinner. This backyard, has something for everyone—shade, pool, spa, fire, grass, TV, music and proximity to the kitchen for a cold libation—what else could you want?”

60

JOLI MAGAZINE | SPRING 2018

THESE MEMORABLE BLOCKS DICTATED THE STYLE OF A NEW STRUCTURE.

“I think the mid-century design of the house will help attract the lucky new owners,” says Perry. “The understated cool factor is looming, and this is where the fun is going to be! From Friday to Sundown Sunday night, 1406 Antigua Way will be the new hub for the neighborhood.”

Topping the list of new homes in the area with five bedrooms and five-and-a-half baths, the light-filled abode offers approximately 3,850 square feet of chic yet practical living space. Expect floor-to-ceiling windows; custom-built Pete Willhoit cabinetry; quartz slabs on every countertop surface; and durable, rifted French white oak flooring to complement and soften the property’s hard lines and cuttingedge architecture. Among the standout features? Plenty of space for everyone. “If you don’t need five bedrooms, one of them is set up

for a home office; and if the parents are entertaining downstairs and the little ones want to play video games or watch a movie, they have a fabulous upstairs living room that affords them ample space to be kids,” says Perry. “The builder and his team really tried to think of everything, and I think they knocked it out of the park.” The residence’s white brick, smooth stucco and vertically placed wood exterior is a standout in the neighborhood, which is welcoming its first custom-built mid-century

modern home to the market. A convivial front-yard patio beckons one through an attractive wood-and-glass door and into the light-filled foyer. Around to the right, an open living and dining room area opens via stacked Fleetwood doors to the outdoor environs replete with a grassy lawn; large pool and spill-over spa; covered patio with a built-in barbecue, linear fireplace and TV; fire feature; and, last but not least, an oversized, detached three-car garage with room for a workshop. Back inside, the open living/dining area

is flanked by the kitchen, which features professional-grade appliances (including a Thermador six-burner stove, griddle, double oven, and paneled refrigerator and dishwasher); quartz countertops; two-tone white-and-wood cabinetry offering plentiful storage; a pull-out spice rack; and large waterfall-edge island with a farmhouse sink. The butler’s pantry is tucked behind a hallway that reveals a laundry room; full bath; secondary master suite sporting a bath with dual vanities and a shower; and an office with a separate entrance.

A floating wooden staircase with glass railings traverses to the home’s large-scale living area above. Here one will find a main master suite flaunting a private deck overlooking the backyard and nighttime views of Fashion Island; spacious walk-in closet; and spa-like bath with dual sinks (one with a makeup area); soaking tub; and an oversized shower. Also on this level is a large living room/flex space (ideal for watching those spectacular SoCal sunsets), as well as a duo of en-suite bedrooms. “I think the mid-century design of the house will help attract the lucky new owners,” says Perry. “The understated cool factor is looming, and this is where the fun is going to be! From Friday to Sundown Sunday night, 1406 Antigua Way will be the new hub for the neighborhood.”

wasn’t looking to own a fitness business,” says CEO Joe DeRobbio, whose primary business is in the financial sector. “I went to check it out at the urging of my colleague and quickly became hooked on the workout, which not only promoted a high level of fitness but also rehabbed my injured knee and saved me from having to do a replacement procedure.” Joe DeRobbio has been an entrepreneur since his teens when his skills at woodworking became the basis for his first business. “I created furnishings and sold them from my family home’s backyard and then later to a relative’s furniture shop, says DeRobbio of the early days. By the time he was in his 20’s, DeRobbio owned 15 homes in Southern California - then the market crashed and he found himself upside down in his investment properties. But he wasn’t discouraged. By the time he was in his 30’s, DeRobbio rebuilt himself and had a 5,000 square foot kitchen cabinet showroom and R&D facility in Laguna Niguel, a 30,000 square foot manufacturing plant in Tijuana, and national accounts that included Forever 21. DeRobbio had also partnered with Edward Saldana and Tatiana Derovanessian in a post-production editing facility in Santa Monica named Cake, in additional to co-founding Millennium Capital Partners LLC with Edward Saldana. All seemed great and DeRobbio was back in the saddle. But when the mortgage crisis hit, DeRobbio lost everything due to the economy being in shambles and had to, once again, start over. “When I say I lost everything… I mean everything,” says DeRobbio, explaining that he was evicted from his home with $300 to his name. But the experience was just another obstacle for DeRobbio to overcome. “There are no failures, just lessons.” He regrouped and got into the then burgeoning cannabis industry. I developed a vending machine that dispensed pre-measured portions of product and enabled dispensaries to more effectively manage and control inventory. The device was a hit and propelled him back to entrepreneurial success which he parlayed to embark on his now highly successful financial services entity. But DeRobbio didn’t stop there. When a small boutique fitness chain, spiraling into bankruptcy, came across his desk, he was urged by his partner to check things out. What he found was a brilliant concept that was suffering from mismanagement. After being utterly wowed, he decided to purchase the company and turn it around.Together with the talented team including Cliff Harski and Paul David, DeRobbio put Fitwall on course within six months. The

Fitwall chain currently has six locations and a solid growth plan in place. “I look for strong ROI’s (return on investments) and this concept scores big. Clients get great fitness benefits from the 40 minute class and each facility provides a winning business model,” says DeRobbio. National franchising is in the works. So how does this exercise class work? The patented Fitwall device offers a unique cardio blast akin to running up and down the rungs of a ladder. TRX straps, bands and dumbbells are used for the upper body and mid-torso conditioning portions of the total body workout. All the while, there is energizing music and a trained coach to facilitate and motivate the class. Cliff Harski, the COO and athletic director, has developed a truly unique program in addition to assisting in devising cutting edge technology necessary for any gym to survive today. “I knew this fitness facility was special as soon as I audited the class. These classes are different from anything else out there,” says DeRobbio. “They are intense, designed to condition the whole body in a shorter time period, and fun.” n

We can also address stubborn areas of the body by freezing fat by 25% permanently, stimulating hair growth with the use of PRP, and treating urinary incontinence with vaginal rejuvenation, which also reduces laxity and increases sensitivity. Each individual is personally assessed so as to achieve the desired results and goals. We work very closely with the top three pharmaceutical companies that continue to provide support to our team by bringing new cutting edge injectable techniques. STARK’S FULL FACETED APPROACH TO FITNESS

It Takes aVillage - Or At Least a Highly Specialized Team -To Get Results If you are looking for a “New Age Approach” to health and fitness, look no further than Irvine-based Stark where a comprehensive, full-service treatment plan offers your best bet to becoming the best version of yourself.

The initial meeting will also entail conversations about lifestyle. Alcohol intake, stress level, sleep patterns, exercise regimen, hydration and eating habits all play a part in accomplishing peak physical fitness.“People think it’s enough to exercise and eat right but if you’re stressed or can’t sleep through the night, that can be a deal-breaker in getting results,” says Vande Hei, who admits to first hand knowledge of the adverse impact of stress and lack of rest.“My life changed after I began to take natural supplements to help me sleep through the night and incorporated meditation into my routine to decompress.” There are also a couple of state-of-the-art pieces of equipment including a DEXA Scan and Fit3D Scanner, which are used to track and quantify progress towards one’s goal. After your body’s needs for healing and optimization have been addressed, the fitness regimen can be designed based on the findings of the team. “Most of our analytics and protocols are founded on conventional wisdom but where we differ and excel is in our ability to offer a unified, full-faceted approach,” says Vande Hei. “Once we brought all the right specialists under one roof to partake in the evaluation process, share findings and jointly devise the treatment plans, we hit the mark and began consistently creating game changing results.”

verything about this facility is cutting edge cool. Even the staff titles hint that this place offers something unique.Tyler Mounce introduces himself as Vice President of Morale - a term that makes you wonder what else besides a prescribed regimen of muscle fatiguing movements are in store. And by the way, when you enroll, you are not a client working with a personal trainer. You are a student and that person who tells you what to do is your coach. Since its inception, Stark has helped nearly 2,000 students achieve their health and fitness goals. So what is the forward thinking feature integral to Stark’s success? It is the top to bottom, inside out, systematic approach to wellness that leads to results. It all starts with a comprehensive evaluation to determine just about everything and anything that may impede progress in attaining your goal. Blood analysis is conducted to test for any micronutrient deficiencies, food allergies and more. “For most people, it’s nearly impossible to eat enough of the right foods that your body needs. Even if you do eat the right foods, nutrients don’t always get absorbed,” explains founder and owner, Todd Vande Hei. But no worries because a nutritionist and naturopathic doctor are part of the team to guide you and create a supplement regimen to fill the gap. Also included in the assessment process are a movement screen and a posture analysis, as well as a comprehensive orthopedic assessment so that the team is able to identify anatomical weak points that restrict movement.“You can’t exercise very well if movement is limited or painful,” offers Mounce, who conducts the bulk of the assessments. Mobility impairments are dealt with by Chiropractor and Active Release Specialist Dr. Justin Cheng, who is part of the treatment team.

ack in 1978 I started cooking professionally at a little French bistro in Saratoga, California called ‘Le Mouton Noir’ or Black Sheep. I spent over three years there learning and refining my cooking skills and it really inspired me to launch a career in the business. The owners were a husband and wife team that were passionate about French food and absolutely everything was made from scratch. They were generous in allowing me to experiment with new dishes and, in fact, bought me my first Cuisinart as a birthday gift. The signature dish on the menu was ‘Noisettes d’Agneau au Paloise’ which were grilled medallions of lamb loin served with a mint béarnaise sauce. It was my first exposure to lamb and this dish was simple but amazingly delicious. To this day, when spring time rolls around each year, grilled lamb is always on my preferred list of meals to prepare. My updated version of this dish replaces the Paloise with a lighter mint Chimichurri sauce and is served with three dishes that are my favorites to serve with lamb. The first is a butter rich,Yukon Gold potato puree that can be made ahead, kept warm over simmering water and piped onto the plate with a pastry bag. The second is a puree of sweet peas or what the English call mushy peas. To me, fresh sweet peas are the ultimate spring vegetable and I don’t understand why the puree of this bright green veggie doesn’t show up at more tables. Maybe because, along with chopped carrots, they were the standard vegetables found in frozen dinners. To me, fresh green peas are a delicacy packed with nutrients. Finally, a simple grilled heirloom tomato, which needs nothing but a little salt and fresh pepper as the grilling intensifies the flavor. The colors and flavors on a plate together shout spring to me and this is one of my favorite ways to enjoy lamb. I like to pair this dish with one of my new favorite wines, “Sexual Chocolate 2015 Red Blend” from SLO Down Wines in San Luis Obispo, but a nice California Zinfandel also complements the grilled lamb.

Grilled Prosciutto-wrapped Noisettes of Lamb on Yukon Gold Potato Puree with Broiled Tomato, Mushy Peas, and Mint Chimichurri (serves 2) Ingredients 2 each lamb loins or racks as needed prosciutto, sliced 1 cup yukon gold potato puree, held warm 2 each small heirloom tomatoes 1 cup fresh or frozen green peas 1/8 cup heavy cream 1 tbs butter To taste kosher salt and white pepper 1/2 cup mint chimichurri sauce (recipe follows) Directions Bone out loins or racks. If using racks, trim any excess fat from around outer side of the eye. Cut into approximately 1” thick medallions. Cut prosciutto into thin strips, wrap around medallions, and secure with toothpicks. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper and set aside at room temp. Blanch peas in boiling water for 1 minute, drain, place in blender or food processor along with cream and butter and pulse until pureed. Season to taste with salt & white pepper. Cut upper third (stem end) of the tomatoes, season with salt & pepper and broil or sear cut side down until lightly browned. Boil potatoes (peeled and cut) for 20 minutes or until tender. Drain and force through ricer. Heat 4 tbs butter and 1/3 cup heavy cream. Combine mixture with potatoes and stir until creamy. Season with salt and white pepper. Heat grill until very hot and sear lamb medallions on both sides, preferably no further than mediumrare. Stripe potato puree down center of plate, then place lamb medallions atop puree and top each with mint chimichurri. Garnish with broiled tomato and mushy peas. MINT CHIMICHURRI SAUCE Ingredients: 1/8 cup parsley, flat leaf chopped 1/8 cup shallots, minced 1/8 cup seasoned rice wine vinegar 2 tbs garlic, minced 1 tbs fresh thyme, stemmed 1/2 cup fresh mint, stemmed, chopped 1 tsp chile flakes 1/4 tsp kosher salt 1/4 tsp black pepper, freshly ground 1 cup olive oil Preparation: Place all ingredients in blender and pulse until lightly mixed but not a smooth puree. Refrigerate. Allow to sit at room temperature 30 minutes before use.

Since then, Mina has become a celebrity status chef with concept restaurants spanning the nation and launching abroad. Mina’s culinary talent has earned him a host of coveted awards including Michelin Star and James Beard. Bourbon Steak features the best of Mina’s vision and offers a must-try experience for foodies who relish gourmet fine dining in an elegant ocean-view setting. The cuisine, expertly prepared by on-site executive chef Bryan Brown, features high quality offerings such as Imperial Osetra caviar, black truffles and Wagyu steak. Every dinner starts with the signature Duck Fat Fries, compliments of the house. This trio of flavorful, crispy fries is enhanced with a medley of seasonings, and accompanied by a melange of dipping sauces. For caviar aficionados, the caviar parfait paired with a flute of Chartogne-Taillet Cuvee Champagne, is a delightful starter. So is the Smokin’ Hot Shellfish Platter, a succulent mixed grill of all the favorites. If you haven’t tried Wagyu beef, here’s your chance to experience the specially bred and fed cattle that creates an unsurpassed melt-in-your-mouth twist on steak. The hybrid version, Snake River Farms ribeye, offers an alternative tender steak option. These delicacy category meats are stand alone delicious but if you want to kick it up a notch, sauce options that include bearnaise, chimichurri, red wine reduction and a couple more, are readily available for added flavor. There are plenty of sides to go with your main. Black truffle mac & cheese and mirin & soy-glazed mushrooms are two of the many options that will go great with your steak. It might be challenging with so many enticing dinner menu items that beg to be tasted, but do save room for dessert, particularly the house favorite - Banana Tarte Tatin, served with honey ice cream. Each bite of this delicate pastry is even more enjoyable when accompanied by the featured dessert wine, the 2009 Hungarian Royal Tokaji.

Classic car aficionados from all over the world arrived, along with their beloved classic Packards, produced between the 1920’s through 1950’s, for the weekend long opportunity to mingle with fellow automobile collectors. The theme “Packards in Paradise” lived up to its name as the weekend started with a caravan tour of pre-war and post-war Packards driving along the idyllic Back Bay Drive in Newport Beach. “This event was a great success,” said Donnie Crevier, President of Crevier Classic Cars. “There were Packards in this show which were manufactured with specific customizations requested by the original owner, making them one-of-akind coveted collectibles. One of the stand out automobiles was the 1936 Packard 120 LeBaron Convertible, built on special order by a Chicago-area tobacco tycoon. Later, when American actor, director, writer and comedian Edward Herrmann became its owner, he worked with the History Channel to create an hour-long special on the restoration.” The Packard selected as the Most Elegant Post-War by Orange County District Attorney Tony Rackauckas along with the selection committee was the 1956 Packard Caribbean Hardtop, owned by Jay Johnson and designed by Dick Teague. Other winners included: Aaron and Valerie Weiss; Edmund and Judy Thompson; Lloyd and Debbie Cranford; and Tom Neal.

or decades, CoverGirl has filled the drugstore aisles with beauty products and encouraged women to experiment with makeup and be an “Easy, Breezy, Beautiful CoverGirl.” However, that slogan has officially been retired, as the iconic brand recently underwent a transformation and launched the biggest reinvention in its 60-year history. CoverGirl now boasts a modern, minimalist aesthetic and a new expression to encourage beauty individuality: “I Am What I Make Up.” SPRING 2018 | JOLI MAGAZINE

CoverGirl’s bold, new vision celebrates authenticity, diversity and expressiveness, while aiming to inspire people to embrace their unique identities and to create any version of themselves, with makeup. Ukonwa Ojo, SVP CoverGirl, Coty, noted, “We started with the insight that people no longer strive for a singular standard of beauty, but use makeup as a tool for self-expression and personal transformation. CoverGirl has always been inclusive and is known for pushing the boundaries of what it means to be beautiful, which means we have a responsibility to elevate how we connect and communicate with people….We hope to spark a provocative dialogue that shifts cultural assumptions about when, where, how and why people wear makeup.” The brand’s campaign includes several videos and a long-form film entitled “Made in the Mirror” that features six CoverGirls, including chef,TV personality and author Ayesha Curry; actress, writer and YouTube sensation Issa Rae; singer and performer Katy Perry; fitness trainer Massy Arias; 69-year-old model and dietician Maye Musk; and professional motorcycle racer Shelina Moreda. The film opens with literary legend Toni Morrison’s quote from her 1992 novel Jazz, “What’s the world for you if you can’t make it up the way you want it?” All of the women shown in the film are change-makers and makeup enthusiasts who inspire and empower as representatives of the brand’s mission. CoverGirl also announced its first male ambassador, model and makeup artist James Charles, late last year—a sure sign that change was in the air and that the beauty brand is accessible to everyone. CoverGirl’s powerful transformation touches on all areas of the brand, including packaging and product design; in-store experience; a new logo and tagline; and across all communications. Challenging beauty norms with their reinvention, CoverGirl encourages individuals to express themselves with makeup and to feel emboldened to change looks as often as one desires.Whether one chooses to wear purple lipstick during an intense fitness workout or wear natural makeup on a date night, it’s all perfectly acceptable, which makes “I Am What I Make Up” a beautiful mantra we can all support. n
