Japanese 日本古来の精神性を、金箔を用いた絵画で表現する。 マサチューセッツ大学在学中、高取焼に衝撃を受け1988年に初来日したデビット・スタンリー・ヒューエットさん。 2010年に軽井沢に移住し、このまちで活動しているアーティストだ。陶芸や日本画など日本の伝統技法を学んだ彼は、 屏風作りに触発され金箔を使った絵画を作り出している。 キャンバスに下地を塗り、その上に金箔を貼り、皺の隆起やひび割れで独特の模様をつくる。そして、精神統一をしてか ら筆で黒い「跳ね」を描く。伝統を表現した「金」に「黒」で自制心を加えるのは、武士の精神性を表現したものだとい う。ヒューエットさんがこの地に拠点を移したのは妻の妊娠がきっかけだった。「自然のなかで子供を育てたい」という 理由だが、軽井沢の街並みが故郷・ニューヨーク州に似ている事も決め手となったという。 昨年、倉庫をリノベーションしギャラリーとしてオープン。国道沿いの便利な場所だが、裏手には緑の林が広がっている 。展示スペースの他にアトリエと陶芸の窯も備えており、創作中に通りがかりの人が興味を持って作品について尋ねてく ることも。「軽井沢の人は昔から外国人に慣れているのでフレンドリー。そんなところも気に入っています」 軽井沢で創作をするようになり、それまで赤と黒一辺倒だった色彩に、他の色が加わるようになった。「絵に遊び心が出 てきたと感じていいます。都会は皆が忙しく、それが作品にも表れていた」と話す。軽井沢で過ごす穏やかな時間のなか で,その創作の泉は満ち溢れている。

English The ancient Japanese Spirituality is expressed by paintings using gold leaf David Stanley Hewett first came to Japan in 1988 when he was impressed by Takatori ware while attending the University of Massachusetts. He is an artist who has worked in Karuizawa since 2010. After learning traditional Japanese techniques such as ceramics and Japanese painting. He was inspired by the folding screen making and he started to create paintings using gold leaf. A base is applied to the canvas, and placed gold leaf on it to create a unique pattern with wrinkles and cracks. Then after unifying his minds, draw a black “splash” with a brush. David said that adding discipline with black to traditional gold is an expression of the spirituality of the Samurai. He moved to Karuizawa because of his wife’s pregnancy. The reason is that he wants to raise children in nature, but also the cityscape of Karuizawa resembles his hometown. Last year, the warehouse was renovated and opened as a gallery. It’s a convenient place along the national highway, but there is a green forest behind the gallery. The gallery has not only exhibition space, also has an atelier and a pottery kiln, and sometimes people who pass by may be interested in asking about the work during the creation. David said “people in Karuizawa have been accustomed to foreigners for a long time, so they are friendly. That is one of the reasons why I like Karuizawa so much.” David used to draw only red and black. Since he started to create in Karuizawa, he also started to use other colors. He said, “I feel that the painting has become playful. Everyone was busy in the city, and that was reflected in the work.” The fountain of creation is full in the calm time spent in Karuizawa.
