Soon after it opened its doors, Zippy’s McCully became the go-to neighborhood diner for many.

1960s

The first Zippy’s location opens and features a fast-food counter where on-the-go patrons can grab a quick bite. The Saimin Lānai, now retired, is initially only open for dinner and late night. The original logo features a long tail on the “Z” with red dots and a white background. Zippy’s mascot, Moki Man, is a local Hawaiian character “zipping” to get a quick food fix.

The original Zippy’s mascot, Moki Man, was featured on promotional pieces, as well as an embroidered patch for manager’s uniforms.

THE START With the help of mentors, family friends and many others, the first Zippy’s opened on Oct. 17, 1966, and was an instant hit. Charles and Francis say they owe their success especially to the restaurant’s first employees, who worked hard to bring excellent customer service.

OCTOBER 17, 1966 First Zippy’s location opens in McCully and features the Saimin Lānai at the rear of the restaurant. The Zip Min is part of the original menu, which also features the smiling Hawaiian Moki Man.
