Cloud Installation
Chicago, Illinois USA
Firm: Door 13 Architects
Role:
Project Description: The Cloud installation came out of an excess of tubes in our office and a sketch for an atomospheric space. As the vision grew, the amount of tubes in the office turned out to be too small. As a result, I contacted print shops within Chicago and picked up tubes every week for a little less than a year. All the while, I was also cutting, arranging and watching the installation grow as tubes for its construction were accumulated.
2013-2014
Director, Designer, Producer Tasks: -Sketched initial idea. -Collected plotter tubes for a year. -Cut, refined, and arranged plotter tubes. -Framed, wired, and installed final installation. Status: Complete
Reflected Ceiling Plan The lowest portion of ceiling dipped to 25” below the framing while the highest point was at 4”. The changes in depth within a sinusoidal pattern give the effect of a clould.
The Sketch The Cloud installation started out with a haphazard sketch and an excess of plotter tubes. This is the sketch.
The Collection
The Cutting and Refining
The Framing
The Installation
After the amount of tubes in the office turned out to not be enough, I contacted several print shops in Chicago to salvage tubes for the project. Through a sustainable process of procurement I was able to collect the amount of tubes needed for the installation.
Through a slow process of collecting, hand cutting every tube in such a way to minimize waste, and arranging the tubes I was able to start to see the installation come alive. The tubes were then mounted to a substrate that could be easily fastend to a structure.
In order to prepare for the Cloud installation, a metal track system had to be put up in the room. The framing system took half of a day to install.
Whereas the collection, cutting, arranging, mounting and refinining of the tubes took approximately one year. The final installation of the tubes took less than 24 hours.

Door 13 Architects Project Description: This project came from a close collaboration with Swedish architecture firm Elding Oscarson. The office is set in an existing masonry building with panoramic views of the city. The space is inhabited by five individual “cubes”.The meeting rooms or “floating cubes” carve out the void space in between the open office plan. The floor is a reclaimed roller rink floor finetuned through a process of cleaning, sanding, and finishing.

Grasslake, Illinois USA 2016-17
Firm: STR Partners
Role:
Project Description: Grasslake is a “one school” district meaning it has one elementary, middle and high school housed in a single complex. We removed a portion of the most dated portion of the existing school and created a connection to the addition. The addition features programming to support 21st century learning including a large double height learning commons space with two interaction rooms ,classrooms, and an office suite.

Interaction Room and Learning commons
21st century learning environment classrooms are equipped with flexible and lightweight furniture, tack and marker boards, dimmable light fixtures, sliding marker board storage wall, good indoor air quality and acoustics, and a moveable teacher station and desk that allows the space to adapt to the days lesson.
The corridor is lined with natural wood lockers arranged in an alcove like shape to create a sense of enclosure with in the usually directly linear hall.
The learning commons is a double height space filled with light, book shelves and adaptable furniture. It is a Space to be loud, run around, read an ipad or possibly even a book. Inversely the interaction rooms are a quiet space to concentrate on having more intimate learning or group problem solving sessions. The acoustical relationship of loud to quiet and quiet to loud is essential to the problem solving process.
School Addition
Arlington Heights, Illinois USA
Firm: STR Partners
Role:
Project Description: Part of a district wide effort to update existing elementary facilities by introducing an addition and performing interior renovations. The addition consists of 4 new large classrooms, a small group room and two small classrooms. This project was specifically challenging because of the desire to tie into the existing buildings pre HVAC structure. This project forced a large amount of coordination and fighting for inches in at the floor to ceiling level.
EXISTING BUILDING

Production Coordination Tasks: -Coordinated drawings and models with engineers -Took lead on exterior facade details and large scale detailing. -Published drawings and worked with team to bring project to completion on time. Status: In Construction

Connection to Existing Building
The stair is composed of a metal pan stair that has a single point of connection to the column in the form of a long weld.
The classrooms are long rectangular rooms filled with light from the West facing windows. The rooms are conditioned by unit ventilators.
Lockers are located on the East side of the classroom and overflow to the North side of the room as opposed to being in the corridor.
The new addition is separated from the existing structure by a 2” expansion joint placed strategically at the end of the existing overhang. The existng structure is composed of I beams and bulb joists. The I beams serve as a support for the long spanning bulb joists. The roof deck is made up of a composite of gypsum deck and insulation.

Typical Classroom
Corridor
Small Classrooms
The first and second floor classrooms have casework and windows running the full length of the Western wall. On the East wall, there are natural wood lockers with cabinets above and a casework section with a sink and built in drinking fountain. The north and south walls have tack and marker boards in varying appropriate lengths for the space. It is important to notice that the outlets for power and data have been strategically placed so that sound cannot directly transfer through outlet cavities.
The Corridor’s material is composed of resilient painted CMU block and is 10’-2” wide. Heating comes from a radiant ceiling panel in the ceiling.
The small classrooms are on both the first and second floor and are primarily used for small group activities. These rooms are equipped for small group activities requiring power, data and marker boards.
School District Competition
Yorkville, Illinois USA
Firm: STR Partners
Role:
Project Description: Part of a shortlist competition to become a school district’s architect. The competition entailed the five million dollar renovation of an existing but fairly recently (early 2000’s) constructed middle school building complex. We offered a menu of interventions from which the school district could pick choose. Many of our solutions have the ability to be utilized in almost all buildings in the school district.
2017
Production Tasks: -Published drawings and worked with team to bring project to completion on time. -Studied and utilized existing drawings to quickly prepare accurate existing conditions model. -Took very basic ideas and developed into workable modeled solutions. Status: Currently at Final Round of Competition

IDEAL CLASSROOM The Ideal Classroom
The ideal classroom is a flexible learning environment with flexible ,movable furniture that can be readily moved as well as adjusted to fit different sized children. The furniture is meant to move. The walls are covered in marker boards, tack boards, and monitors. The teacher’s station is concealed inside of the closet which has STR moveable marker board sliding doors. Good indoor air quality is a must, and dimmable lighting and light blocking microshades are necessary to adjust the light level of the room required for the day’s requirements.

INTERVENTION
C
Library Renovation The largest intervention that we proposed would be a complete renovation of the center of the school in which we would reconfigure the existing closed stair to be a open processional stair system. We would also be configuring all the classrooms in the renovation to be openable, made possible by movable partitions. The classrooms can be connected or closed off with a simple movement of the wall. We would also be introducing a series of items including flexible seating, an admin support space, and additional display cases.

Open Configuration When the configuration is in the open position, the middle of the complex is an open plan where the classrooms have no barriers. This allows the space to sprawl throughout the entire middle of the building.

When the configuration is closed, the individual rooms or zones are acoustically sealed from one another. This allows for intelligible speech and acoustics, while still allowing for transparency between spaces.
