INTRODUCTION This document aims to act as a showcase of the works that I have created or hve taken part in during the past two years. The portfolio is split into three general sections; Sketches of buildings done by myself during my own time or as part of the Urban Sketchers London group, still life and figure drawings carried out at the the Forest Gate Drawing Group in East London, and work carried out as part of an online course Architecture 1o1 by the Berlin based course provider iVersity, which provided an introduction to skills such as photomontage and modelmaking

The following drawings are freehand sketches made on location in London. This is my most common form of graphical expression, noting the details in front of me with a pen. Staying in one location for a period of time allows the eye to notice the details on a seemingly familiar cityscape. The challenge is to integrate these features into the drawing. These drawings aim for realism with an attempt to fill in the scenery with a ’fisheye’ effect where necessary. These sketches take around 30-45 minutes to make

This series of pictures is taken mainly from my work at the Forest Gate Drawing group, Tutored by Jim Valentine and Gabriele Iozzi. The idea of attending still life classes came from advice at a London metropolitan university open day in 2014. these lessons introduced me to new materials and allowed me to work on a larger format. I usually made inital drawings on brown wrapping paper, following the example of another artist in the class. I worked in charcoal, chalk , crayon and pastels. Acrylic paints were used in classes to update earlier drawings. style of

This section ends with sculptural drawings from the V & A Museum, and an introduction to fashion illustration at the London College of Fashion. This was an open day event as part of the degree show, tutored by Martha Zmpounou. This session introduced me to a more abstract form of drawing. The skills developed by still life and figurative drawings have developed my range of skills greatly.

ARCHITECTURE 1o1 FROM SPACE TO ARCHITECTURE PART III - WEEK 4 MATERIALS

The work in this final section is taken from my work on the Architecture 1o1 online course by the iVersity organisation. This course is divided into a series of daily topics with a weekly theme. In this format, an Idea is presented as well as the possible methods of solution. Each day introduces a new part of the design process, until the final product is made. The final outcome may be electronic (photographs, video, software), or a solid object (paper, string or cardboard models). The results are placed on instagram. Each day ‘s work is known by an instagram hashtag, where all the students place their work. Architecture 1o1 introduced each day’s work with a 15 second video plus further instructions.

#YouCanPlan

Conceptual Model of a folding screen made in stiff paper

Wednesday 20-05-15 #NeverDesign The properties of cardboard (from ordinary quality storage boxes) will be tested by this project. Two layers (400mm x100mm) are to be folded by cutting the board and stapling them together to form a strong hinge. The screen is to be supported by a half-assembled storage box, which will also act as the folding mechanism for the screen.

Thursday 21-05-15 #QuotingLike The screen takes shape. Yellow tracing paper is glued onto the cardboard frame.

Friday 22-05-15 #WhoTakesNotes Part I The final product. The half-assembled storage box holds up one end of the screen and was not physically connected to the screen. The folded cardboard makes a stiff joint but it is effective if the screen is meant to be semipermanent. The screen height is around 1.20 metres.

Friday 22-05-15 #WhoTakesNotes Part II I had hoped to finish the project at night to show the illuminated screen. Using the ‘vignette’ function in Bazaart, I have darkened the edges of the picture to show the translucent nature of the paper.
