a message from the eadmaster

It is your support

Dear Friends of Xavier High School,

that enables us to

It is my pleasure to present to you our Xavier High School Annual Report for the 2010-2011 fiscal year. This is the first time that the Annual Report is being included in our Xavier Today magazine which allows us to present this to our complete Xavier community. I am very grateful to our alumni, present and past parents of students, and many other kind benefactors whose generosity is so vital to the mission of Xavier.

continue to offer a quality Xaverian education to 880 young men, and thanks to your generosity we are able to offer financial assistance to approximately 270 of our students.

It is your support that enables us to continue to offer a quality Xaverian education to 880 young men, and thanks to your generosity we are able to offer financial assistance to approximately 270 of our students. Thanks to you we can enhance our strong academic, athletic and extracurricular programs each year. This school year alone our new course offerings include Chinese III, Pre-Engineering III, Advanced Placement Spanish, Law Enforcement and Basic Forensics, Marketing, String Ensemble, Guitar, Advanced Placement Music Theory and Personal Finance. It is your assistance that helped make possible the installation of much-needed new windows in the front of the school, phase one of a three-year project, and the installation of a new scoreboard on our main athletic field. We are looking forward to celebrating the 50th Anniversary of our school in 2013, and you will be learning more about our plans for Xavier’s future as we prepare for that anniversary. From the opening of our doors in 1963 until the present the Xaverian Brothers, faculty and staff have striven to offer a high school education rooted in faith and gospel values, and with your continued help we hope to do so for many years to come. I would like to express thanks from all of us at Xavier for the dedicated support of our Alumni Association under the leadership of Mr. Phil Franklin ’73, and our Home and School Association led by Mr. James Killen ’78. Thanks also to our Advancement Office staff for their tireless efforts in raising financial support for our school: Mr. Michael Tommasi ’67, Director of Advancement; Mr. Joseph Lane ’95, Assistant Director; Mr. John Guerin, Director of Communications; and Mrs. Karen Brown, Administrative Assistant. To all of you, our benefactors, I offer sincerest thanks and prayerful best wishes. May God continue to bless each of you and your families each day. Gratefully,

Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. Headmaster

“Students Helping Students” Tops Goal

A

s of our final count at the close of our 2011 “Students Helping Students” fundraising campaign the students reached their $100,000 goal. The goal each year is to provide funds for financial aid to students who desire a Xavier education and need some assistance. Ads are solicited from businesses and patrons of the school. The Ad Book will be distributed to Alumni and supporters throughout the northeast, encouraging them to patronize those who support the school through their advertisements in the book.

$97,695.75 + $7,880.90 = $105,576.65! On the final day the students brought in $27,683.75 bringing our ad collection total to $97,695.75. When we added in the $7,880.90 from the six jean day collections it pushed the campaign over the top, giving us a grand total of $105,576.65.

he Religion Department sponsored an evening for junior parents entitled, “The Stress of Junior Year.” The evening was designed to heighten awareness of the current realities and pressures associated with being a teenager in the hope that we all will become better equipped to Jim Coleman ’12 meet their needs. Senior Jim Coleman presented a talk on technology that was filled with information that every parent should hear. Below are just a few highlights of what he had to say. “Technology has a large influence on all of us within our school, work, social, and family communities. The main focus for this talk in particular is the use and abuse of technology within these communities.” “Although there is nothing wrong with holding small talk via text, it is very easy to get a little carried away. Conversations grow in number and length, and may possibly begin to consume a large part of the day.” “I’m aware that many of you may not be as technologically sound as your sons. This does not, however, prevent you from being able to get a handle on what is going on. Basic rules and expectations are okay to lay out for your son.” “Technology is a great resource and tool that can impact our lives positively or negatively. Having maturity enough to accept the importance and the will power to take it in stride, all comes with time. Xavier is an incredible foundation for the development of these characteristics, and will only benefit your son.” Read Jim’s complete talk on our website at http://www. xavierhighschool.org/s/952/images/editor_documents/ campus%20ministry/2011-12/junior_parent_night_ technology_talk.pdf. Ford’s Driving Skills for Life at Xavier O

ctober 14th Ford Motor Company brought its national, award winning teen safe driving program, Ford Driving Skills for Life (Ford DSFL), to Xavier. In Connecticut, Xavier High School was selected to participate in the program. In response to growing awareness about teen fatalities and driver distraction, the Ford Motor Company Fund, along with the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), announced in February a $1,000,000 expansion of Ford DSFL, with a 30 city national tour. The expansion added a new component to Ford DSFL’s hands on programs and web based training. Xavier was the final stop on this year’s tour. The program began with an assembly in the gym where students were given an introduction to the program by one of the team’s professional drivers. He explained some very dramatic statistics (some are listed below) about the consequences of impaired or distracted driving. “Getting a driver’s license, and the freedom that comes with it is an exciting milestone for our students,” said Dean of Students Nick Cerreta ’01. “Often, that

excitement overshadows the reality that driving a car takes concentration and skill. Ford’s Driving Skills for Life gives them a hands on experience that shows them the importance of driver safety and responsibility.” “Xavier High School is pleased to team up with Ford Motor Company in delivering this very important

New Energy Efficient Windows

I

n the summer of 1961, the architects specifications called for state-of-the-art aluminum sash windows with 1/8” double strength glass to be installed in the brand new Xavier High School which was to be built on Saybrook Road. After serving for almost 50 years, those windows are now in the process of being replaced with energy-efficient windows appropriate for the 21st century. The front of the school is the first phase of this building upgrade. While to a casual observer the look may not be dramatically different, the efficiency of the windows will make a substantial positive impact on the school in the long run. At first, all the old windows had to be removed carefully disposing of materials that were very common in construction during the 1960’s. The new window installation was completed in advance of the back to school activities by the end of August. Phase one represented about one-third of the school. If all goes well with our fund raising this year, phase two of the new window project, which would be the parking lot or Durham side of the building could be completed next summer. The courtyard window replacements are planned for the summer of 2013. n

message about safety and driving to our students,” said Mr. Cerreta. “We are extremely excited to have the Ford team visit us to talk about driving safety and responsibility. It is an important message that needs to be shared with our students.” Channel 3 reporter Matt McFarland interviewed Principal Brendan Donohue who said “we were pleased to be able to offer this program from Ford. It gives the students some really important information and it brings it to them in an exciting way.” After the assembly, teams of student volunteers were given the chance to drive and experience first hand the effect that distraction and other factors can have. The

original plan was to have the entire school view some of the driving, but Mother Nature didn’t cooperate. However, there are some excellent videos on the Driving Skills for Life website as well as driving tips that are appropriate for anyone who gets behind the wheel regardless of age. According to the Connecticut Highway Safety Office drivers between the ages of 16 and 24 years old account for only 10% of Connecticut’s licensed drivers, yet they were involved in 23% of all fatal auto crashes in 2009. The students at Xavier High School participated in hands on training modules that will equip each student with the fundamental skills necessary for safe driving. n

Largest Turnout Ever for…

Open House O

ctober 23rd, Xavier welcomed the largest group of families to ever visit the school during our Annual Open House. Academic Dean for freshmen Mr. David Sizemore ’86 told us that the sign in table had listed almost 400 families participating. Even before the event was scheduled to start at 1 o’clock, families were lining up outside the front doors and the parking lots were full throughout the afternoon. Once a family signed in, they were escorted through the school by volunteer student guides. Classrooms were setup to present all of the Academic Departments, Clubs and Activities, Sports, Alumni & Home and School Associations and other information about Xavier. Faculty/Staff, alumni, parents and a host of other student volunteers were available to answer any questions that might be asked by prospective families. Xavier’s band, jazz band and chorus provided music throughout the afternoon and the Home and School Association hosted a light dessert reception.

Principal Brendan Donohue summed up the day in a letter to Faculty and Staff: “Thank you to all of you for your great efforts at Open House. By all accounts it was a highly successful day. We had a very good turn out. The school building and the grounds looked beautiful. The students did a great job representing the school. I heard nothing but positive comments from the visitors. It is because of the work and dedication of each one of you that Xavier is such a great school. That was on display yesterday and you can all be very proud of the work you do. I am blessed to be part of such a wonderful community. Thank you for everything.” With a large number of early registrations for the November 19th Entrance Exam and an ever increasing number of shadow days (days when 8th graders can follow a current student during a class day and see what a Xavier education is really like), the interest in Xavier seems stronger than ever. n

New Scoreboard

I

n the first week of October, a new scoreboard was installed on the parking lot side of Ryken Field. This has been on our wish list of things that we could do to improve our facilities for our students and fans that come to Football, Soccer, Lacrosse, Ultimate Frisbee and other events held on the field here at Xavier. Thanks to all those donors who have contributed to the Xavier Annual Fund whether specified for athletics or simply left unspecified. n Xavier Today

Success is Crystal Clear in Xavier’s AP/ECE Bio Lab…

W

e had reported in our last Xavier Today that science teacher Mrs. Linda Charpentier was accepted to the summer institute at the University of Connecticut Early College Experience (ECE) program. In conjunction with the Department of Molecular and Cell Biology, they ran a threeday intensive lab experience in protein purification, crystallization and imaging for adjunct UConn ECE Biology instructors. The purpose of this training was to expose ECE Biology instructors to some of the cutting edge methods being used by researchers in the field of structural biology today. Teachers were encouraged to bring this enrichment back to their classrooms.

Mrs. Charpentier recently integrated the laboratory technique of protein crystallization into her AP/ECE Biology course. Her students successfully crystallized the lysozyme protein, an enzyme found in our tears. The next step in a research facility would be to image a crystallized protein using x-ray crystallography in order to discern the 3D shape of the protein molecule. The photos show the crystals as observed merely through a regular classroom microscope. Mrs. Charpentier has been in contact with Dr. Victoria Robinson, who ran the summer institute and who heads UConn’s Protein X-ray Facility, about the possibility of arranging a visit for her

students to view this facility and the results of protein crystallography. Ryan Poulsen ’04 (yearbook photo) is currently a PhD student working with Dr. Robinson in structural biology. Greg Breuer ’08 (yearbook photo) is in his last year of UConn’s Honors Program in Biotechnology/Computer Engineering and hopes to pursue a combination MD/ PhD upon graduation. Both Xavier alums have offered to address Xavier students interested in entering these exciting fields of structural biology, bioengineering and biotechnology. n

t. Governor Nancy Wyman announced that a team of Connecticut high school students travelled to Washington D.C for the kickoff of the 2012 Real World Design Challenge (RWDC) — a nationwide engineering competition that the Xavier team won earlier this year. The seven-member team from Xavier beat more than 450 schools from 40 states to take top honors at the national level in the 2011 RWDC last April with their design of an airplane wing that maximizes fuel efficiency and enhances performance. They presented their winning design on Capitol Hill on October 11 — the day the new Challenge was unveiled.

Ko Maruyama travelled the farthest; he flew in with his wife and children from California to make this part of a family vacation to Connecticut. Spearheading the reunion effort were Class Contacts Dan Pickett and Teddy Wiegand along with their classmate and Xavier’s Academic Dean David Sizemore. The afternoon was filled with laughter as conversations abounded among the alumni who were joined by a number of past teachers and representatives of the school administration and Alumni Executive Committee: Br William Ciganek, C.F.X., Headmaster Br Brian Davis, C.F.X., Br. J. Robert Houlihan, C.F.X., Mrs. Linda Charpentier, Mr. and

Mrs. Richard Feitel, Mr. Art Kohs, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Wilson, Mr. Phil Franklin ’73 (Alumni Assn President), Mr. Jim Royce ’99 (Alumni Executive Committee) and Mr. John Guerin (Director of Communications). One focal point was a table of ’86 yearbooks and scrapbooks that the wives in attendance really seemed to enjoy. One of the ’86 Kestrel editorin-Chiefs, Dave Sizemore, pointed out a few pictures from the student newspaper that included attendees. The only formal presentations of the event were a brief welcome and prayer from Headmaster Br. Brian, followed later by Dave Sizemore’s listing of the five deceased class members who he asked all to remember in their prayers. They are: Mr. David Brandt, ’86, Mr. Peter Gelinas ’86, Mr. Brian Grover ’86, Mr. Jonathan Hayden ’86 and Mr. Richard Thompson II ’86.

After enjoying a clambake menu prepared and served by Navin Brothers Catering, All the alumni and most of their families were taken on a tour of Xavier showing all the new things that have been added to the school in the intervening 25 years since graduation. Xavier’s Office of Advancement and Alumni Executive Committee combine to support the efforts of all our graduating classes who are interested in organizing a class reunion. Whether the reunion is held here at the school or held off premises, we are ready, willing and able to assist in the planning and promotion of these worthwhile events. If anyone is interested in getting a committee together, let us know through your Class Contact, or email alumni@ xavierhighschool.org or advancement@ xavierhighschool.org. n

Mother Nature Kind to…

Alumni Golf Classic

M

other Nature was kind to the 29th Anniversary Golf Classic on June 27th as over 120 alumni, family and friends gathered at Tunxis Plantations in Farmington for a day of golf, food, fellowship and prizes. An early morning drizzle ended as the registration table opened. A cloudy sky which occasionally brightened and comfortable temperatures accompanied the golfers throughout the day. Golfers enjoyed a lunch of freshly grilled sandwiches and cold beverages on the golf course. Under our “best ball” format, golfers vied for trophies for the top three foursomes of the day as well as “longest drive” and “closest to the pin” plaques. Participants assembled in the Tunxis pavilion to dine on an expertly prepared meal. Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. thanked all for their participation and contributions to the school. After dinner the trophy and plaque winners were announced and almost 50 golf raffle prizes were awarded under the capable direction of Brother Thomas Fahey, C.F.X. Mr. Phil Franklin ’73, president of the Xavier Alumni Association and chair of the golf committee, worked all day with Karen Brown, John Guerin and Joe Lane ’95 from the Office of Advancement to guarantee the smooth operation of the event. We also want to thank all the sponsors and donors who helped to make the day a success. The golf committee is already working on plans for the 30th Anniversary Golf Classic. We anticipate an announcement shortly on our website and in our next edition of Xavier Today. n

nnual report of gifts July 1, 2010

through

June 30, 2011

“It is your support that enables us to continue to offer a quality Xaverian education to 880 young men, and thanks to your generosity we are able to offer financial assistance to approximately 270 of our students.” Headmaster Br. Brian Davis, C.F.X.

a message from the

Director of Advancement Dear Friends and Supporters, Over the past year, I’ve met with many of our constituents and emphasized the importance of what partnerships mean to Xavier High School. As you look through the Annual Report, you will see the value of these partnerships. Each partnership acknowledges individuals and corporations that donated to Xavier High School during the 2010-2011 fiscal year. Once again, the ongoing support for our great school was appreciated and necessary. Although we distributed over $1.1 million in financial aid and endowed scholarships, the request and need for assistance continues to grow for about 30% of our students. It is because of these partnerships that 38 students at Xavier earned 2011 AP Scholar Awards in recognition of their exceptional achievement; Football, Wrestling, and Ultimate Frisbee teams captured state titles in 2010-11; and Xavier’s Engineering Team was 2011 state and national champion in the Real World Design Challenge. I would like to express my deepest appreciation to our alumni, parents, grandparents, faculty/ staff, and friends for your ongoing loyalty and support. Through your gifts, no matter how big or small, you played an integral role in fostering the spiritual, academic, and physical growth of our students. We are all part of the Xavier Community. Let’s continue to partner together to strengthen and build the legacy of Xavier High School.

ift Opportunities n planned giving: Bequests of any size leave an important legacy to Xavier. Should you desire information on estate planning, tax deductions, asset protection, wealth replacement or planned giving options, contact Michael Tommasi ’67, Director of Advancement, at (860) 347-6079 or email advancement@xavierhighschool.org. All contributions to Xavier High School are tax deductible to the amount limited by law. n Annual Fund Drive: The purpose of the AFD is to raise revenues to be used for the enhancement of academic, athletic, financial aid, spiritual and extracurricular programs that Xavier would not be able to afford under normal budgetary constraints. The drive is conducted to encourage present parents, parents of alumni, and friends of Xavier to make a contribution. Suggested giving levels are (effective 7/1/10): Xaverian Founders’ Colleagues* ($25,000 and above); Xaverian Leadership Colleagues* ($15,000–$24,999); Ryken Heritage Council* ($10,000–$14,999); Headmaster’s Council* ($5,000–$9,999); Principal’s Circle* ($2,000–$4,999); Falcon Circle* ($1,000–$1,999); Xavier Associate ($500–$999); St. Joseph Associate ($250–$499); Kestrel Sponsor ($100–$249); Black and White Sponsor (less than $100). . *Participants at these levels receive membership in the St. Francis Xavier Society. Pledge payments must be received by the last day of the fiscal year (June 30th) in order to have your name(s) appear in the Annual Report. n Alumni Annual Fund Drive: The purpose of this drive is to raise money that can be used as tuition assistance for deserving Xavier students. Graduates are solicited by direct mail and by phone. Pledges must be fulfilled by June 30 of the calendar year to have your name appear in the Annual Report. n Memorials: A memorial card is sent to the family of the deceased acknowledging your thoughtfulness and generosity. A minimum contribution of $15.00 is suggested. The deceased and his/her family will be remembered in the prayers of the Xaverian Brothers and in special masses offered at Xavier during the year. The deceased and donor will also be listed in the memorial section of the Annual Report. n Restricted Endowment Funds: Numerous funds have been established to honor both living and deceased members of the Xavier community by their families and friends. Interest earned annually from each of these restricted funds is awarded to deserving students in the form of scholarships or financial aid. Contributions to existing funds, or the establishment of new funds, are welcomed and appreciated. Seniors Named National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists

Eldirany, Passavant and Wu Honored…

(L-r): Brother Brian Davis C.F.X, Sherif A. Eldirany , Mason Passavant , Victor Wu, and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue.

H

eadmaster Brother Brian Davis C.F.X and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue announced that Sherif A. Eldirany ’12 of Glastonbury, Mason Passavant ’12 of Middletown/ Durham and Victor Wu ’12 of Durham have been named as National Merit Semifinalists. The announcement was made during an assembly kicking off the annual “Students Helping Students” ad drive. “It seemed to be the perfect setting, as we encouraged our students to be actively involved in helping other students who wish to experience a Xavier education. We are very proud of the individual accomplishment of these three men” said Mr. Donohue.” Approximately 16,000 Semifinalists were named. These academically talented high school seniors have an opportunity to continue in the competition for some 8,300 Merit Scholarship® awards, worth more than $34 million, that will be offered next spring. To be considered for a Merit Scholarship award, Semifinalists must advance to the Finalist level of the competition by fulfilling several requirements. About 90 percent of the Semifinalists are expected to attain Finalist standing, and approximately half will earn the Merit Scholar® title. To become a Finalist, a Semifinalist must have an outstanding academic record throughout high school, be endorsed and recommended by the high school principal, and earn SAT scores that confirm the students earlier performance on the qualifying test. The Semifinalist and a high school official must submit a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay and information about the Semifinalist’s participation and leadership in school and community activities. About 1.5 million juniors in some 22,000 high schools entered the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program by taking the 2010 Preliminary sat/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (psat/nmsqt®), which served as an initial screen of program entrants. The nationwide pool of Semifinalists, which represents less than one percent of U.S. high school seniors, includes the highest-scoring entrants in each state. n

Brian Fitzgerald ’99 Takes Soccer Helm at Xavier

D

irector of Athletics Tony Jaskot ’69 announced in September that Brian Fitzgerald ’99 has been appointed the interim Head Soccer Coach at Xavier High School. “It is with a heavy heart that I must announce that Coach Joe Kedves is stepping down from his position.” Mr. Jaskot continued, “Due to the extremely heavy work load at his company, he explained he would be unable to coach at the level he would expect of himself and the soccer team deserved.” Coach Kedves strongly recommended that his assistant coach, Brian Fitzgerald be appointed to take over the team’s coaching duties. Mr. Jaskot explained that as interim coach, Mr. Fitzgerald will coach the team this year and the positions will be posted at the end of the season. “I’m confident that Coach Fitz will apply for the permanent position at that time” said Mr. Jaskot. Coach Fitzgerald had entered his 5th year as assistant soccer coach at Xavier and said to the team “we’ve had a good start to the year and I don’t plan to make any drastic changes. We are getting the team ready and will continue to work hard to have a successful season.” We are going to take things one day at a time.” The falcons developed into a very competitive team and didn’t give up a goal in the last five games of the regular season. They advanced into the post-season Class LL Soccer Championship series as the #29 seed. The team won in their first game vs #4 South Windsor. But their season came to a close as the team fell 1–0 to #13 Guilford. In a quote from Coach Fitzgerald “I told the guys to keep their heads high. We had a good year.” n

Eight from Xavier Receive Commendations from National Merit Scholarship Program

A

t the opening of school Mass in September, Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue announced that eight seniors have been named Commended Students in the 2012 National Merit Scholarship Program. They are: • Gregory Brown from Durham • Jason Cain from Old Lyme • Kristof Fogarasi from Middletown • Nathaniel Luther from Killingworth • Samuel Magaziner from Essex • Emmett McConville from Madison • Robert Peterson from Guilford • Colm Smith from East Hampton A Letter of Commendation from the school and National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC), which conducts the program, has been presented to these scholastically talented seniors. About 34,000 Commended Students throughout the nation are being recognized

for their exceptional academic promise. Although they will not continue in the 2012 competition for National Merit Scholarships, Commended Students placed among the top five percent of more than 1.5 million students who entered the 2012 competition by taking the 2010 Preliminary SAT/ National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test (PSAT/NMSQT). “Those being named Commended Students have demonstrated outstanding potential for academic success,” commented a spokesperson for NMSC. “These students represent a valuable national resource; recognizing their accomplishments, as well as the key role their schools play in their academic development, is vital to the advancement of educational excellence in our nation. We hope that this recognition will help broaden their educational opportunities and encourage them as they continue their pursuit of academic success.” n

Falcon Blast 2011 Welcomes Little Falcons T

he excitement and anticipation for a new school year was evident as the seventh annual Falcon Blast kicked off on August 31st. Falcon Blast is the first day of a two-day orientation for new freshmen. The freshmen (little falcons) paired up with seniors (big falcons) (two or three freshmen with one senior) in what is largely a casual/social atmosphere to welcome them to the school. All were here for the entrance exam. Most were here for Open House last October as 8th graders. Many came here for a shadow day during the last school year to experience what Xavier High School classes are like. Almost half attended summer programs to better prepare them for the demands of high school. But Falcon Blast was different. This was the day that Xavier’s new freshmen officially became part of the class of 2015. Academic Dean

for freshmen Mr David Sizemore introduced Director of Admissions Brother Thomas Fahey, C.F.X. for the official welcoming address. Among the morning speakers was Senior Class and Student Activities Council (SAC) president Ryan Murphy. Among his remarks, Ryan told the little falcons, “Take advantage of everything Xavier has to offer you. The more you participate in, the more fun and excitement you will get.” The seniors gave the little falcons a tour of the building and met with them in small groups throughout the campus. This was followed by a picnic-style lunch and a Field Day portion of the orientation where all joined in outdoor activities (with abundant water stations available), including Ultimate Frisbee, soccer and flag football. The day concluded with an “ice-cream social.”

eadmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X., Principal Mr. Brendan Donahue and the Xavier High School Deans officially welcomed eight new faculty and staff members to the school at the end of August. The new faculty members were engaging in a few days of orientation and preparation for the new school year. Brother Brian pointed out that all six of the faculty members hold Master degrees in their fields and have much to offer their students. Brother Brian said, “We are pleased to welcome six new teachers to our faculty for the coming year: Mr. Brendan Bell, class of 2005, M.A. from Sacred Heart University, who will be teaching religion; Mr. Ryan Brodeur, M.Ed. from Boston College, serving as chairperson of the foreign language department and teaching French and Spanish (Mr. Brodeur previously taught at Xavier from 2005-2007); Mrs. Allison Donnelly, M.S. from Central Connecticut State University, teaching mathematics; Mr. Timothy Eng, M.A.T. from

Sacred Heart University, joining the English department; Mr. Robert Kirschmann, M.A. from Fordham University, joining the English and Religion departments; Mr. Brian Osterhout, M.S. from Southern Connecticut State University, teaching physical education. We also welcome Mrs. Jane Kennedy and Mrs. Sandra Clark to our library/media center staff.” This summer several of the new faculty members also attended a session for new teachers, in Baltimore, presented by the Xaverian Brothers Sponsored Schools Office. The XBSS Teacher Orientation is an annual three-day program which provides an orientation to the Mission, Vision and Values of Xaverian Sponsorship for teachers new to Xaverian education. Through initiation to the history of the Xaverian contribution to Catholic Education and the spirituality of Theodore James Ryken, the founder of the Xaverian Brothers, teachers are challenged to stewardship of this charism in their schools in the future. n

Pieces of a Puzzle A

fter the festive atmosphere of Falcon Blast had subsided, Xavier’s faculty and staff gathered in the St. Joseph dining hall for their annual opening of school retreat. The retreat was reconfigured by the spiritual life committee from an all-day affair to an abbreviated format due to the after-effects of Hurricane Irene. Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. welcomed all with an opening prayer, giving thanks that the opening of the school year was proceeding well with strong classes of new and returning students. The theme “Finding God in Our Work” was accentuated with an exercise that we had begun during our close of school retreat in June “The Puzzle Piece.” Dean of Faculty Formation Mr. Peter Langevin and Music Director Mr. Chris Dresko re-familiarized all with the activity and added a new twist. Every person received a piece of the puzzle representing the fact that we are each just a small part in the puzzle that makes up Xavier High School. The twist – on the back of each puzzle piece everyone was asked to write or draw something, some characteristic, which they felt they brought to the school. Neatly pieced into the afternoon were personal reflections from seven members of the faculty and staff. As each one made their presentation based on “Finding God in Our Work,” it became evident how each story had its own place in the puzzle that is Xavier High School. The

presenters were: Main Office Administrative Assistant Mrs. Marie Braychak, Social Studies Teacher Mr. James Royce ’99, Academic Dean Mr. Andrew T. Gargano, Math Teacher Mr. Andy Mule ’93, Director of Communications Mr. John Guerin, Math Dept. Chair Mr. John Traceski and Director of Grounds Mr. Michael Schinas. Next the nine groups that had all personalized their puzzle pieces were asked to fit them together. Each group had a representative bring their small puzzle to the Chapel where they were all assembled into a larger photo of the front of Xavier. The completed puzzle representing the talents, characteristics and abilities of the Xavier faculty and staff were then presented as part of the Offertory at the Mass that was the culmination of the afternoon. The celebrant for the Mass was Rev. Jack Rathschmidt, O.F.M Cap., who is in residence at St. Pius X Church in Middletown. This was his first Mass at Xavier. This was also the 50th jubilee as a Capuchin Franciscan. As part of his sermon, he added one more puzzle piece for all of us to ponder, Bamboo. Perhaps we’ll share more of that story at another time. Director of Campus Ministry Mrs. Andrea Hoisl and Principal Mr. Brendan Donohue thanked all who had helped with the program and offered their support to all as the various pieces of the Xavier puzzle are assembled into another successful school year. n

Faculty and staff participated in a teambuilding exercise in the chapel during the opening of school retreat..

As each one made their presentation based on “Finding God in Our Work,” it became evident how each story had its own place in the puzzle that is Mike Schinas, Director of Grounds, offers his reflection.

Director of Music Chris Dresko led the assembly in singing God Bless America. On Sunday at the South Fire District Headquarters on Randolph road in Middletown, Headmaster Brother Brian Davis, C.F.X. participated in the Tenth Anniversary Memorial of the 9/11/01 attacks which included the unveiling of an artifact from the World Trade Center. Brother Brian is the Chaplain for the South Fire District and was asked by Chief Edward Badamo to open the event with a prayer service. Below are excerpts from Br. Brian’s remarks. The other speakers were: Middletown Mayor Sebastian Giuliano ’70, South Fire District Board Chairman David P. Gallitto, President of Firefighters Local 3918 James Mastroianni ’90 and Deputy Chief of Operations Marc Fongemie who also closed the ceremony by playing Amazing Grace on bagpipes. “Most of us have memories of that day, although some of us here are too young. At Xavier High School, our present students were then between four and eight years old, so they may not remember much of 9/11/2001, although I doubt there is anyone who hasn’t seen pictures of the tragedies of the day. Since that day our young people have lived in a world constantly faced with stories of terrorism. As some of you know, my youngest brother Edward was one of the first responders on 9/11 to the World Trade Center, and he is one of the lucky survivors — the only survivor of a team of eight men who responded from his engine company. I remember calling my father to ask where my brother Edward was. We waited until 8:15 that night until we learned that Edward was alive, but we were the fortunate ones. Coming home to Middletown last Sunday I stopped at Sherwood Island in Westport to spend time at the 9/11 memorial there, with the names of all of the Connecticut citizens who died that day. Perhaps some of you know them. One of them is Peter Gelinas, Xavier class of 1986, whom I knew when he was a student. I thought of and prayed for all of those who died in New York, Pennsylvania, and at the Pentagon, and for the families for whom today is such a difficult day, with strong feelings of loss, pain, and perhaps anger. n

“Alumni Helping Future Alumni” To:

My Fellow Alumni

Subject:

Class Contact Opportunity

I

n September, the Alumni Executive Committee held the first of our monthly meetings. In that meeting, I outlined several objectives for us to address in the 2011 – 2012 school year. The most critical objective we have before us is the continued promotion of our Class Contact program. I’d like to provide you with information about this program and extend an offer to each of you to become a Class Contact for your graduating class. What does it mean to be a “Class Contact?” We established the Class Contact program with several objectives in mind. Key among them are: • Class Contacts will serve as our key ambassadors to each graduating class; we will ask for their input to the Alumni Executive Committee helping guide the direction of our association • They will help us maintain current contact information with our fellow graduates and their classmates • They will be leaders in their class reunions and in communicating alumni and school news to classmates • They will encourage classmates to contribute to our school.

“W

e ought to be here, to remember,

to pray, to support each other. We pray today for the lost ones and for their families. We pray for all those — living and dead — who devoted their energies helping and saving others. We pray for our military personnel in dangerous places like Iraq and Afghanistan who are on the front lines for us today. And

In short, we are looking to our Class Contacts to help us keep the spirit and tradition of Xavier excellence alive in our graduates; to keep our graduates engaged and supporting our school. Last year, I introduced the phrase, “Alumni Helping Future Alumni”, as the credo for our Alumni Association. In the Class Contact program, we are providing every alumni with a unique opportunity to help deepen their commitment to Xavier and also to directly support our future alumni – the current students of Xavier. Several alums have already volunteered. Why not you? With over 8,000 alumni spanning 44 years of graduating classes, we need key people from each graduating class to help us stay in contact with our alumni. This is something you can do from wherever you live. If you would like to become a Class Contact, please call us at the Xavier Advancement Office (860-347-6079) or through our email address, alumni@xavierhighschool.org. Thank you for taking the time to read this note. I look forward to hearing from you and seeing you at Xavier. Sincerely,

we pray for an end to terror, for world peace and respect for all peoples.
