BRYAN LEE O’MALLEY: FROM SCOTT (PILGRIM) TO SNOT (GIRL)
Comics offer a different and special 6 reading experience. Some of the best adaptations have been bestsellers, breathing new life into stories and introducing new audiences to literary masterpieces.
Leah Moore has co-written series such as The Trial of Sherlock Holmes, Damsels and, most recently, for 2000AD’s Black Shuck with husband, John Reppion. John Reppion’s love of Victoriana, horror and weirdness, alongside his passion for research, has led to his comic adaptations of Lovecraft’s Shadow over Innsmouth, Stoker’s Dracula and even Lewis Carroll’s Alice books.

Ken Niimura is one of the 2016 festival’s special guests, all the way from Japan. Ken was winner of the Golden Prize in the 5th International Manga Award and was nominated for both Eisner and Eagle Awards for his work on I Kill Giants, created in collaboration with Joe Kelly. His illustration book Zero reveals both a rare and diverse talent, while Travelling and Henshin, both short story collections, display that intoxicating combination of fine art and strong storylines. He says: ‘Come, let’s do some drawing games together! You don’t need to draw well – just be ready to have some fun by using drawings as a means to tell a story and combine your drawings with those of the other participants.’

Independent publishing and selfpublishing isn’t just a means to critical acclaim, but to concrete, commercial success. Page 45’s biggest-selling graphic novel of 2015 was independently published, beating everything from DC which is owned by multi-millionaire mega-corps Time Warner, while their biggest-selling comic was self-published, outselling titles by Marvel, owned by multibillionaire Disney. With independent publishers, you can retain creative control and ownership and be nurtured like nowhere else, fostering long-lasting, personal relationships with retailers and review sites, which will prove invaluable throughout your career. Our panel will show you how: Ricky Miller (Director, Avery Hill Publishing), Katriona Chapman (self-publisher, freelancer for larger publishers and part of Avery Hill), Andy Oliver (Editorin-Chief at Broken Frontier pioneer review site and brand-new selfpublisher!) and Stephen L. Holland (Festival patron, Page 45, awardwinning comicbook retailer). Come and hear answers to the questions which you’ve yet to think of. In partnership with Page 45
