3. London

MEN’S BESPOKE FASHION CAPITAL

London stands as the unrivaled epicenter of men's fashion, overshadowing even the illustrious fashion capitals of Milan and Paris. Savile Row, a modest yet iconic stretch nestled in Mayfair, is at the heart of this sartorial kingdom. Here, amidst its genteel facade, resides a cadre of men's tailors renowned for crafting the epitome of bespoke and made-to-measure suits, earning global acclaim.

Historically synonymous with British bespoke, Savile Row derives its name from the tradition where cloth was "spoken for" by discerning patrons. However, the winds of change have swept through this venerable street over the past two decades, ushering in a wave of international designer labels. Consequently, alongside bespoke offerings, ready-to-wear and made-to-measure suiting now grace its thoroughfare, cementing its status as a mecca for the sartorially inclined gentleman.

While traditionalists may cast a wary glance at these newcomers, their presence has democratized the sartorial landscape, providing an array of options catering to every budget. The key lies in discerning which tailor aligns best with one's preferences and physique.

TIPS

FOR HOSTING AN OUTDOOR SPRING PARTY

SET A COLOR SCHEME

When it comes to adding color, it's best to work with the same hues found in the outdoor surrounding elements. To set a table for spring, remember that yellowy greens, deep pinks, and corals fit the season, but are best used when toned down by a neutral. Gold, bronze, and mossy greens can create an earthy outdoor vibe.

SET YOUR TABLE

Pairing fresh floral arrangements with dinnerware that are pastels or have botanical patterns creates a beautiful spring-inspired outdoor table setting. Since spring is also associated with soft, cool colors, try an overall muted palette accented with bold pops of saturated pink tones.

MIXED METAL AND CLEAR VASES

An excellent way to bring elegance to a spring event is by incorporating metallic accents. Brass and pewter featured around clean, white china is a great look. A more monochromatic look can be achieved by layering one particular metallic in different finishes.

Floral arrangements in drink carafes instead of vases – depending on which you choose, can create either a formal or casual setting. Simple glass is always best as a non-compete with the items around it.

LIGHT FARE AND SPECIALTY DRINKS

Springtime brunches and dinner parties are meant to be light and airy, almost whimsical. To compliment your décor, make sure to choose a light menu. Salads, fruits and cheeses, gazpacho, anything that will not sink into your guests’ stomachs.

The same goes for a signature cocktail. Leave behind the heavy reds and go for cocktails that are fruit juice or seltzer-based with splashes of citron. Accent with garnishes like mint or basil.

SUN EXPOSURE

Before setting a time for your event, be sure to take into consideration the positioning of the sun in relation to your outdoor space. Too much shade may cause the area to become too chilly. Conversely, spaces that receive too much sun can cause guests to overheat and also have a negative effect on cold food and drink.

CINECITTÀ

The History of Italian Film at Cinecittà Studios

Perhaps you’re an Italian film buff. Or a fan of Federico Fellini. Or you’re fascinated by film studios. If so, you’ll certainly have heard of Cinecittà. It’s Italy's foremost film studio.

18 JOHN ERIC HOME

And, when Rome was the epicenter of global film, all the big stars worked there. In the 1950s and 1960s –when American and British stars and directors flocked to Rome, and the grand, hotel-lined Via Veneto in the city center was a lively haunt for celebrity-hunting paparazzi –everyone was working out of Cinecittà. It became known as “Hollywood on the Tiber.”

Fellini worked there. Loren and Taylor filmed there. Its output included classics of Italian neorealism, spaghetti westerns, and sword-and-sandal movies. Ben Hur, Cleopatra, Roman Holiday, and The Pink Panther……of the thousands of films shot there, nearly 50 have received Academy Awards.

The beginning

Cinecittà Studios was founded by Benito Mussolini in 1937 as a propaganda tool for the Fascist leader. Today, the studio uses the nickname Factory of Dreams (Fabbrica dei Sogni), but back then the slogan was "Cinema is the most powerful weapon".

During World War II, the studios were bombed by the Allied forces and later used as a camp for refugees who fled Rome after the bombings. Later it included refugees from Eastern Europe, Africa, and Asia.

After the war and after Mussolini’s government was expelled, Italian Neorealism grew in popularity. This film movement showed the grittier side of Rome and Italy with stories that highlighted the struggles of the poor and working class.

Then along came Federico Fellini, who apprenticed during the Neorealism period. Fellini, considered one of the greatest and most influential filmmakers of all time, created a new style of directing.

After the popularity of the Neorealism style, a more extravagant and fanciful style, led by Fellini, gained popularity across Italy and the world. His style was so influential that the term Felliniesque was coined. In response to this, Fellini said:

“I’d always dreamed of being an adjective when I grew up. I am flattered by it. I can imagine what the Americans mean when they say Felliniesque: opulent, extravagant, dreamlike, bizarre, neurotic.”

Fellini lived at Cinecittà. Literally. He kept a small accommodation at the studios, which allowed him to never cease working. La Dolce Vita (1960) was filmed in Theatre 5, within which the director recreated the aforementioned Via Veneto. When he did leave the studios to work, he filmed some of the most famous locations in the Italian capital.

The landmark most readily associated with Fellini is, without doubt, the Trevi Fountain, whose baroque majesty played a central role in La Dolce Vita. The film's most famous scene sees Swedish actress Anita Ekberg

immersed in the waters of the fountain, tempting Marcello Mastroianni to wade in after her. When Mastroianni died in 1996 the city of Rome turned off the fountain's waters, draping the monument in black, and when Ekberg died in 2015, a giant banner reading "Ciao Anita" was hung over the fountain.

But once the greats left, Cinecittà continued. In the last thirty years, the studio has hosted films by international directors like Anthony Minghella, Martin Scorsese, Wes Anderson, and Mel Gibson. Last year, Cinecittà signed a five-year deal with the production group Fremantle for the continual rental of six soundstages at the site. More are on their way.

Today at Cinecittà

Today, Cinecittà movie studios are as full. Productions come for the tax incentives, high production values, and Italian glamour. The 40% tax rebate on production costs for international films and television series has been a strong drawing card.

Fellini’s favorite studio has been reconfigured into a series of medieval rooms and courtyards for a Netflix adaptation of Boccaccio’s Decameron. Nearby, British director Joe Wright has commandeered five studios for an eight-episode series “M: Son of the Century,” based on

19

Antonio Scurati’s best-selling novel about Benito Mussolini’s early years. Most recently, Studio 5 was used for the HBO series Rome and Paolo Sorrentino's The Young Pope. And Those About to Die, Roland Emmerich’s gladiator series starring Anthony Hopkins, is set to begin filming.

To add to all the buzz, Cinecittà is introducing a major makeover using European Union pandemic recovery funds. Four existing soundstages will be refurbished, and five more are scheduled to be built by 2026. One soundstage has already been outfitted with a gigantic high-tech LED wall that allows virtual effects to be added during production. The addition of the virtual effects technology has expanded Cinecittà’s moviemaking potential, making films more financially possible.

It isn’t just actors and directors that occupy Cinecittà’s lots. The studios are a short subway ride from the historical center of Rome - Centro Storico – and tourists flock to the complex to imbibe history and film. When they arrive, they are transported to a magical and historical “city” that brings to life some of the biggest movies and historical events of the past 80 years.

THEODORES BY CANTONI OPENS IN WASHINGTON, DC

With a grand opening celebration this spring, the newest location of this 40-year-old brand brings its high-end furniture to the nation’s capital

Opening its doors in 1984, Cantoni, a high-end modern furniture and accessories brand, offers showrooms in California, Georgia, Texas, and now in its newest location in Washington, DC. Located at 2233 Wisconsin Avenue, NW, Theodores by Cantoni is in the former Theodores showroom, carrying on a tradition of offering high-end furniture and top-notch customer service while also infusing Cantoni’s signature style and inspiring designs.

Michael Wilkov, Founder and Chief Energizing Officer at Cantoni, knew the former Theodores owners and stayed in touch while visiting his daughter who attended American University. When the Theodores owners decided to retire, they reached out to Wilkov, who was delighted to bring Cantoni to Georgetown.

“We look forward to a great future in the Washington, DC market,” says Wilkov. Cantoni, celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, has been built on Wilkov’s desire to be

the best in its niche within the furniture industry. “Our story is not uncommon,” the founder says. “And the message is very clear – hard work, perseverance, and the support of a great team and customer base make the dream attainable.”

Debuting this spring in all Cantoni showrooms is the Next Level Collection by Malerba. Characterized by vertical and horizontal geometries with discrete shapes and a refined choice of finishes, the collection is infused with harmony and elegance. This new offering emphasizes Cantoni’s dedication to great design.

“We feel very strongly that our best years are still ahead and that Cantoni will become an even greater force” Wilkov adds. For more information about Cantoni and the new Theodores by Cantoni location in Washington, DC, visit www.cantoni.com.

GTM ARCHITECTS CELEBRATES ITS 35TH ANNIVERSARY

The residential and commercial architecture firm in Bethesda, Maryland credits a team approach to its longstanding success.

Founded in 1989 by George Thomas Myers, GTM Architects has built a well-respected residential and commercial architecture firm in the Washington, DC, region over the last 35 years. George Myers, President, credits the company’s longevity to its people and the team approach they foster among the 60-plus employees.

George, who grew up in Chevy Chase, Maryland, started GTM Architects out of his basement when he was 27, hiring architects as he grew, including Rick Conrath, Principal, who has been with GTM Architects for 33 years. In 1996, George’s brother Jim Myers, who had been helping him with accounting part-time, joined the firm full-time as Managing Principal.

Over the last three and a half decades, GTM Architects has seen many milestones, from George doubling the size of his home office in the first 10 years, to moving to a 10,000-square-foot office in Bethesda, Maryland, in 2003 where they still are today, to rapid growth in the last decade in their Residential, Commercial, Commercial Interiors, and Multifamily Studios.

“We give our team the freedom to be as good as they can be,” says George, in part by offering them the flexibility to find their niche within the various studios. GTM Architects encourages employees to hone their

strengths and find their specialties. “It’s a good place to be an architect,” George adds. “You get to do what you love doing,” which, for George, is meeting with clients and hand sketching, while Jim manages the day-to-day operations.

In addition, GTM Architects offers employees the opportunity to buy into the company, giving the principals the confidence that the firm will go on long after they retire. Some principals and associates have been with GTM Architects for more than 25 years, including Rolando Valdez, David Konapelsky, and Carmen Maldonado; others have more than 10 or 20 years.

In 2023, GTM Architects worked on more than 300 projects across all studios. “I’m proud of all of our projects, especially ones I didn’t design,” says George, who adds that it’s important to give each architect credit for his or her work.

For Jim, it’s not about the projects, but the process. “Everything we do here is about process - the way we do it, how we treat people. We follow the golden rule,” he says. “We take a ‘we’ approach to business” and it shows in the way the team performs.

DESIGNER SPOTLIGHT

THE BEST OF THE BEST

TJ MONAHAN

Designing houses is really the only thing TJ Monahan of Designed Happy can ever remember wanting to do, other than playing center field for the Yankees. “Spoiler alert, I didn't get much further than Little League,” he says. As a kid, Lego was his gateway to residential design. Lego eventually turned into cardboard models of houses. Cardboard models turned into drafting classes in high school. And drafting classes turned into two degrees in Architecture from The Catholic University of America.

He’s been working in the industry since 2001 and has had the chance to work at a handful of great companies and with a lot of great clients. Now, he’s thrilled to have the opportunity to take all that experience and use it to make Designed Happy the best place to work for his employees, as well as the best place to work with his clients.

TJ shares some of his thoughts on the current trends in home entertainment.

What are homeowners looking for as far as home entertainment?

The way people entertain, much like everything else in their home, is very personal. Two of the projects we have in design right now are on opposite ends of the entertaining spectrum. One project is in Potomac, Maryland, and the homeowners want to remove the wall between their living room and sunroom and strengthen the connection between the living room and the kitchen. The clients also want to expand their deck and enlarge the kitchen with an addition. All of this will allow the owners to entertain 40-50 people regularly.

The other project is in Northeast, Washington, DC, where the owners like to entertain two or three couples or no more than eight people at a time. They want a better kitchen to be able to prep for the entertaining but absolutely don’t want to see the kitchen mess while people are over. So, for them, we’re finding ways within their existing footprint to make the kitchen work better, while at the same time enlarging the adjacent dining room and keeping it private.

What have you designed as far as home entertainment for your family?

On a personal note, when we designed our family home, we were somewhere in between the recent projects mentioned above. We weren’t hosting huge parties regularly, but we did like the open feel of connected spaces, and we also didn’t want to see a mess. For us, that meant a kitchen that was completely open to the family room and dining room, as well as a prep space tucked around the corner to hide some stuff away. There’s no one-size-fits-all entertaining solution; it’s a very personal decision.

What are some of the types of entertainment spaces that are popular right now both for inside and outside the home?

There are a few project types that are very popular now including:

• Wine rooms, especially under the basement stairs. This space could be decorative with modern racks and a full glass wall, a more enclosed space with climate control, or something in between.

• Bars. Whether it’s a full bar in your basement or a custom dry-bar furniture piece in the dining room, people are interested in finding fun ways to include bars.

• Screen porches that extend your interior entertaining space outside, especially with heaters and fans to allow for almost year-round use. Even better, consider having more than one entrance from the inside of the house to the porch to make entertaining flow better.

How does technology play a part in home entertainment?

Another consideration is technology. As our homes become more connected, you have the option to integrate smart features when you remodel or build new. Personally, I’m a big fan, but some people prefer the physical light switch to one on your phone – there’s no right or wrong here. Here are a few ways to incorporate technology into your entertainment plans:

• Music. In-ceiling speakers have been around forever, but with the advancement of Bluetooth, streaming, and hardware technologies, you can do some cool things now. For example, you can get hidden speakers that play through drywall.

• Lighting. Having a connected lighting system can be fun. Depending on the kind of bulbs you get, you can go from being able to dim lights all the way to completely changing their color - hello orange lights at the Halloween party. You can also have the lighting levels change with the sunlight.

• Shades. Connected shades are my favorite. They still seem like magic to me. Imagine you’re having a dinner party in the summer. When people come over, it’s light out and after

40 JOHN ERIC HOME

you eat dinner, it’s still light out. But as you’re starting to have your after-dinner drinks that you grab from your under-stairs wine room and serve on your custom dry bar, the shades quietly and automatically start to lower. The lower the sun gets, the lower the shades get. And as the shades come down, your lights start to automatically dim, and without doing anything, you just went from daytime entertaining to evening entertaining. So cool.

Where do you see home entertainment headed in the future?

So where are we headed in the future with all of this? While I can’t predict the future, I do know three things:

• People have strong opinions about how they prefer to entertain.

• Technology is making it easier and easier to personalize experiences.

• Thoughtful designers help create better experiences.

Given that, I think the future of entertaining is going to look exactly the way you personally are hoping it looks. And when you create your ultra-personalized entertaining space, be sure to invite me to a party – I’d love to see what you came up with.

National Parks

AREN’T JUST FOR EXPLORING –THEY HOST AMAZING SHOWS TOO

For music lovers, there’s nothing like catching an outdoor show in nature. Leaving behind stadiums and arenas, we enjoy melodies in the most unexpected—and beautiful—places. National parks have been inspiring artists to create for 100 years now; it’s no surprise they also offer some of the coolest music events out there—some right on the park grounds.

JOSHUA TREE NATIONAL PARK, CALIFORNIA

This music venue sits in an otherwise barren landscape, 16 miles northeast of Joshua Tree National Park. With old wooden signs and nothing but desert for miles and miles, the space embodies a Wild West vibe. Saturday is the night to go for live music when bands from all over the States fly into to jam.

SHRINE OF THE AGES AUDITORIUM, GRAND CANYON NATIONAL PARK, ARIZONA

Located inside the Grand Canyon National Park, the annual Grand Canyon Music Festival brings classical instruments and ensembles to the multi-purpose Shrine of the Ages Auditorium, which also houses lectures and other events. Though dates haven’t been officially announced yet, the festivities usually take place over several days between August and September. Make sure to come early to explore the park; after the event, the park service won’t let you near the rim.

CUYAHOGA VALLEY NATIONAL PARK, OHIO

The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park runs several year-round concert series in and around the park for visitors to enjoy. Folk music is a mainstay, as is Ed Caner of the band Hey Mavis, who hosts regular jam sessions. In the summer months, the Conservancy hosts Music in the Meadow, a free live show at Howe Meadow featuring acts like bluegrass band The Lonesome Stars and the Revolution Brass Band inside Cuyahoga Valley National Park.

RED ROCKS NATIONAL PARK, COLORADO

Rolling Stone magazine calls it America’s best amphitheater. Musical legends including the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix, the Grateful Dead, and the Rolling Stones have raved about it. Designated a National Historic Landmark by the National Park Service and Department of the Interior, the amphitheater is a top destination for music lovers from around the world.

ARCHES AND CANYONLANDS NATIONAL PARKS, UTAH

Moab Music Festival, which takes place in the town of Moab, Utah, is the coolest outdoor fest around. Performances happen in red-rock grottos some are only reachable by boat, some are located on ranches, and others are in canyons. The fest also offers musical hikes, in which attendees are shuttled to a secret location for a moderate hike ending with a performance in the middle of nature. Catch this year’s acts from September 1 through September 15.

ALSO NOT TO BE MISSED…

The National Park Service created an artist-in-residence program geared towards painters, sculptors, photographers, and musicians wanting to deepen their craft by establishing a strong connection with their park of choice— living and exploring the territory every day. Most of the programs require two shows or performances by the artist that resulted from their time living on park grounds. You can check out each individual park’s event calendar. See a violinist playing an ode to red cliffs, tall, evergreen trees, or majestic mountains. Programs are offered all year and vary by season.

STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING STREAMING

SO MANY CHOICES…

The number of available streaming services has exploded over the past five years. There are more than 200 streaming services available worldwide. The launch of options such as Max, Peacock, Disney+ and Apple TV+, joining older ones like Netflix, Amazon Prime Video and Hulu. Less than three dozen have at least 50 million subscribers, with Netflix the most popular at over 200 million subscribers.

All this streaming has made it a challenge to figure out what subscriptions to add, which ones to cancel, and which ones to pause. Determining the best TV streaming service means looking at things like pricing, live sports availability, movie and series selections, ads, and password-sharing restrictions.

Which ones are the best? Of course, that is determined by your preferences. But here is a general lowdown on the best streams….

51

NETFLIX

Netflix is the world’s most popular streaming service. You can stream originals, including TV shows like Squid Game and Stranger Things and movies like The Woman King, as well as acquisitions such as the TV show Suits. Subscriptions are all paid with an ad-supported option.

Following a recent password crackdown, Netflix allows extra member slots for people outside a household for a fee per month for standard and premium subscribers. Pros of the service include a vast content library and an outstanding app that works seamlessly. Cons include the inability to share passwords and a higher price for the premium (ultraHD) tier. It’s best for people who stream a lot of content, love watching the latest hit series, and don’t mind spending a bit more for high-quality video. It also has a decent recommendation algorithm. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Netflix.

HULU

Hulu started as a hub for content for the broadcast networks but now includes a mix of originals and acquisitions. Top shows include The Kardashians and The Handmaid’s Tale, and movies range from Night at the Museum to Quiz Lady. A paid subscription is required, but you can do a seven-day free trial.

Hulu offers both ads-free and ads plans. It also offers four live cable plans; Hulu + Live TV is an excellent live streaming option with many channels. The app works well, and customer support is solid. The recommendations are more basic than Netflix, and finding new content on the app can be harder than with some other services. Pros of Hulu include the low price with ads, the breadth of content and some excellent documentaries. Cons include a smaller content selection than other major streaming services and less user-friendly presentation. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Hulu.

AMAZON PRIME VIDEO

The final of the “big three” streamers, Amazon has an extensive library of movies (both original and acquired), many original series, and a few well-acquired TV series, though it’s best known for films. Popular originals include Red, White & Royal Blue, The Summer I Turned Pretty, and Manchester by the Sea.

Pros of Amazon Prime Video include access to popular older hits like The Fast & the Furious and decent pricing. You can get a subscription to just video and you can also subscribe to video plus Amazon Prime membership, which includes free shipping on many Amazon buys. Cons of Amazon Prime Video include a less user-friendly app and fewer high-profile TV shows than Netflix. Ads are now part of the service.

DISNEY+

Disney+ has some of the most buzzworthy streaming content, including Marvel and Star Wars movies, original shows, Pixar movies, and classic Disney animation. Disney offers the service with ads and without. You can also bundle it with Hulu and ESPN+, two other Disney-owned offerings. Disney+ has tons of content, and it’s well organized. You can browse by content category or channel, and it promotes new shows and movies prominently. The app doesn’t suffer the glitches of other newer streamers, either. Other pros include affordability. The cons include no free trial and no streaming sports option in the app, though you can get the ESPN+ add-on. The service is best for people with children and those who love the MCU or Star Wars. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Disney+.

MAX

Max, formerly HBO Max, contains content from all of Warner Bros. Discovery’s channels—which is a lot! That includes

52 JOHN ERIC HOME

HBO, all the Discovery channels, Warner Bros. Movies (including DC Comics and Barbie) and more. Top shows and movies include Friends, the Justice League series, And Just Like That, Succession, Fixer Upper, and more.

Max has great content, but finding new shows and movies can be challenging. There’s no free version of the service, which requires a subscription and offers a version with ads. Max includes access to popular HBO shows, but the cons are considerable—it’s among the most expensive services, the app can be glitchy, especially when trying to watch a very popular show, and the original-to-Max programming isn’t broadly appealing. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Max.

PEACOCK

Peacock, the service from Comcast (CMCSA), has ramped up production of originals, though it still offers fewer than most other services. It hosts Universal Pictures’ considerable movie library, and it’s more inexpensive than some of the others. It’s not one of the best streaming services for sports, with the only big draw being Sunday Night Football.

The service is best for movie lovers. In addition to limited sports programming, it doesn’t have a great kids’ selection either. Other pros include the cheap ad-supported subscription rate and the availability of classic TV content, like House, Modern Family, 30 Rock, 21 Jump Street, and more. Though Peacock originally had a free version, that is no longer offered. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Peacock.

APPLE TV+

Apple TV+ has one of the most limited content libraries of the major streamers, as well as one of the lowest subscriber rates. But it also has one of the highest-buzz originals in comedy Ted Lasso and some prestige movies, such as Killers of the Flower Moon.

Since it lacks the vast content of other streamers, Apple TV+ is best suited to those who want to watch a specific show or movie. The streamer’s original shows are quite good, though the app can be glitchy at times, timing out or not loading. Other cons include the challenge of finding older content because of the way its app is organized. It also has limited live sports options, though MLB and MLS are subscription add-on options. There’s no free version of Apple TV+, but you can do a free trial. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Apple TV+.

PARAMOUNT +

Paramount+ has seen a big increase in subscribers, due in part to the popularity of Yellowstone, its standout original that’s also spawned several spinoffs. The service also streams Paramount’s movie library, such as Top Gun: Maverick. It’s

affordable with ads and there is an option to have Showtime thrown in.

The service is best for those who love Taylor Sheridan or want early access to blockbuster films. It’s not great for sports fans—aside from Sunday NFL games on CBS, the sports lineup is mostly European soccer. The app is fine, neither greatly organized nor glitchy. There is no free version, and even the higher-priced option has a few ads. You can view price breakdowns before subscribing to Paramount +.

MHZ CHOICE + TOPIC

MHz CHOICE+topic is a newcomer on the block and offers almost exclusively European content. Its French, Italian, Nordic Noir, German, and Spanish television series are expansive. Most of the programming is television shows, but they also offer movies as well.

This service is best for Europhiles who want to keep up with current programming or enjoy the old greats such as Lupin and Inspector Montalbano. The app works well, and the listing of content is easy to follow. MHz CHOICE+topic offers a free 7-day trial and price breakdowns are available on their site. It’s ad-free.

ACORN

For Anglophiles, Acorn remains tops. While BritBox has dried up, except for new Shetland and Vera seasons, Acorn has become the most popular British programming streaming service.

Acorn offers timeless classics from the U.K., Ireland, and Australia. A paid no-ad subscription is available, and a 7-day trial can be used before committing to the service.

THE BESTS…

The best live streaming service at an affordable price is considered to be Hulu + Live TV. It has more channels (over 90) than Sling’s lower-priced options, including popular ones like ESPN, FX, TNT, A&E, Food Network, and all the broadcast networks, like ABC and CBS.

However, the best cable streaming service is ranked as Max. Cord-cutters love it because it includes access to loads of cable shows in one location, including the hugely popular HBO programs, which rank among the top shows on cable. For sports, it goes to ESPN+, which you can get in a bundle with Hulu. It includes access to hundreds of college sporting

events, such as football, baseball, soccer, field hockey and more, as well as professional soccer, baseball, boxing, tennis, and others.

And for families, and it’s not a big surprise, Disney+ ranks first. Its huge library of classic animated content, including all the princess movies, plus fun originals like the newly released Percy Jackson reboot, Percy Jackson and the Olympians, make Disney+ stand head and shoulders above other streaming options for children.

What is best for you? Again, it’s determined by your particular tastes. But with so many streamers out there, you may find yourself binge-watching all weekend long!

HIRAM POWERS, THE GREEK SLAVE

Carved from creamy white marble, a nude woman stands next to a hip-high support, perhaps a low post. Carved 1846. When this statue of an enslaved woman toured the United States in the late 1840s, its full nudity shocked many viewers. The subject relates to Greece's struggle for independence in the 1820s, but the anti-slavery message made it a favorite among US abolitionists. It is one of the most famous sculptures in US history.

A woman and a winged angel, both with pale, peach skin, are situated in a church interior in this tall, narrow painting. In a scene from the Bible, the angel Gabriel delivers a message from God: that Mary will bear his son, Jesus. Van Eyck included Gabriel's words (in Latin) in the painting. He shows Mary's reply too, but her words are upside down, intended to be read from above. The dove represents the Holy Spirit, and white lilies symbolize Mary's purity. In the floor tiles, scenes from the Hebrew bible foreshadow Jesus' life.

LEONARDO DA VINCI, GINEVRA DE' BENCI

This is the only painting by Leonardo da Vinci in the Americas, one of the only three of his surviving portraits of women. Likely painted at the time of her engagement at 16, it depicts an intelligent and confident Ginevra de' Benci. Wealthy women were often isolated at home, but she is outside, surrounded by juniper leaves—a play on her name in Italian. On the back of the painting, the artist included a laurel branch, a symbolic reference to the young woman being a poet.

PABLO PICASSO, FAMILY OF SALTIMBANQUES

As a young artist, Piccaso searched for recognition and belonging. He captured his sense of unease in this painting of wandering performers (saltimbanques). Picasso identified with these lonely-looking entertainers and included himself among the group, in the diamond-printed costume.

INTERNATIONAL FAIRE

CASTRO THEATRE | SAN FRANCISCO

The Castro, a striking Spanish Renaissance-style theater, is a movie palace built during the Roaring '20s. Designed by architect Timothy L. Pflueger, the Castro opened in 1922 and showed first-run films until 1976. It changed hands several times in the following years but continued to operate as a movie theater. In 2001, relatives of the Castro's original owners acquired the theater and restored it.

Today, the Castro screens a regular mix of independent and classic movies, including documentaries and art films. Like many theaters of its era, the Castro's interior is an opulent mashup of Spanish, Italian, and Asian design motifs. The opulent exterior marquee and dramatic chandelier in the auditorium were both installed in the 1930s. The theater can seat more than 1,400 people.

EGYPTIAN THEATRE | PARK CITY, UTAH

The discovery of King Tut's tomb in 1922 set off a craze for Egyptian-style architecture, arts, and crafts. The Egyptian Theatre, which opened in 1926, reflects that era, decorated with hieroglyphics, obelisk-shaped pilasters, and other exotic details. Originally a movie theater and vaudeville house, the Egyptian closed in 1978.

Funded in part by a donation from Park City-based Mrs. Fields Cookies, the Egyptian reopened as a live performance venue in 1981. After additional renovation in 1990, it became one of the venues for the Sundance Film Festival. Today, the Egyptian shows a mix of classic movies, live shows, and other events.

AVALON THEATRE | WASHINGTON, D.C.

The Avalon is Washington, D.C.'s oldest movie theater. It's been showing films since 1923 when it opened as the Chevy Chase Theater. In 1970, a second, smaller screening room was opened. The Avalon continued to show movies until 2001 when the owner declared bankruptcy. After being sold to a nonprofit and restored, the Avalon reopened in 2003.

Today, the Avalon remains a part of Washington's thriving Chevy Chase neighborhood. It screens first-run films, along with occasional classics, and other programs. Digital projection systems were installed in 2013, and there's a cafe serving food and drink in the lobby.

TAMPA THEATRE | TAMPA, FLORIDA

Built in 1926 as a Paramount Pictures movie palace, the Tampa Theatre showed many kinds of movies in its life, from studio new releases to B movies, before closing in 1973. Local movie buffs and city leaders rallied to save the building, and it reopened in 1977 as a non-profit venue showing first run and classic movies and hosting live events.

The ornate auditorium, with its Spanish, Italian, Babylonian, and Persian influences, was designed to resemble an airy courtyard with arched balconies and a constellation of twinkling illuminated "stars" in the ceiling. The Tampa Theatre was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1978.

PLAZA CINEMA | OTTAWA, KANSAS

The oldest purpose-built movie theater still in operation, the Plaza (which has also gone by Yale, Bijou, and Crystal Theatre) has been open since 1907, making 112 years of movie magic. The two-screen property now shows feature films on one screen and older films on the other. The second screen is also used as part of a historical tour.

The Plaza Cinema has long held the title of America’s oldest cinema, but owner Peach Madl collected everything from court documents to photographs and building permits to finally receive the official certificate of the world’s oldest cinema from Guinness World Records. Suppose you aren’t impressed by the record-breaking status of the Plaza. In that case, you may still want to see the movie memorabilia museum located behind the screen featuring props, scripts, and costumes from popular films.

KENNEDY CENTER

A LIVING LEGACY

In 1958, President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed bipartisan legislation creating a National Cultural Center in the nation’s capital. In November of 1962, President and Mrs. Kennedy launched a $30 million fundraising campaign for the Center’s construction. Former President Eisenhower and his wife Mamie participated in the event which demonstrated the bipartisan support for a world-class center for the performing arts in Washington, DC. In 1963, President Kennedy signed legislation to extend the fundraising deadline for the Center.

Two months after President Kennedy’s assassination, by an Act of Congress signed into law by President Lyndon B. Johnson on January 23, 1964, the nation’s National Cultural Center was designated as a living memorial to President John F. Kennedy. By this Act, President Kennedy’s devotion to the advancement of the performing arts in the United States was recognized.

Architect Edward Durell Stone designed the Kennedy Center. It’s massive at 100 feet high, 630 feet long, and 300 feet wide. It features a grand foyer, with 16 hand-blown Orrefors crystal chandeliers (a gift from Sweden) and red carpeting. The Hall of States and the Hall of Nations are both 250 feet long.

Cyril M. Harris designed the Kennedy Center's auditoriums and their acoustics. One of the key considerations that needed to be addressed was the many aircraft flying along the Potomac River and over the Kennedy Center en route to and from nearby Washington National Airport. To keep out this noise, the Kennedy Center was designed as a box within a box, giving each auditorium an extra outer shell.

The Center houses seven theaters, including the Concert Hall, known for its impressive acoustics and symphonic performances. Artwork given by many countries can be found both in and outside the center, including a statue of Don Quixote (a gift from Spain) and Henri Matisse tapestries in the Opera House lobby (a gift from France).

Of course, the best way to experience the Kennedy Center is to see a show. The Center is the busiest of all U.S. performing arts centers, hosting more than 2,000 performances a year. Over two million people annually watch performances, from orchestra seats at sold-out shows to the free concert series at the Millenium Stage.

THE NATIONAL SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA, THE WASHINGTON NATIONAL OPERA, AND THE WASHINGTON BALLET

Throughout its history, the National Symphony Orchestra has served the nation through annual state residencies, national television broadcasts, radio broadcasts, and touring. The NSO is also a cultural ambassador for the United States and represents the nation on tours to Europe, Asia, South America, and the Middle East.

The 2023–2024 season marks the National Symphony Orchestra's 93rd and Gianandrea Noseda's seventh as its music director. The Italian conductor serves as the Orchestra's seventh music director, joining the NSO's legacy of such distinguished leaders as Christoph Eschenbach, Leonard Slatkin, Mstislav Rostropovich, Antal Dorati, Howard Mitchell, and Hans Kindler. The Orchestra's artistic leadership also includes Principal Pops Conductor Steven Reineke and Artistic Advisor Ben Folds.

The Opera Society’s inaugural production on January 31, 1957, was not with a tried-and-true staple, but with Mozart's The Abduction from the Seraglio. Performances were held in George Washington University’s Lisner Auditorium. Conductor Callaway held rehearsals in New York, as that is where the singers were, and props had to be assembled from various sources including the Turkish Embassy. Nevertheless, the production was a huge success.

Almost seventy years later, and countless artistic leaps, the Washington National Opera continues to move boldly forward on the great adventure that began years ago in a university auditorium. Washington National Opera is now one of the nation's leading opera companies playing to standing-room audiences at the Kennedy Center.

Founded in 1956 as the Opera Society of Washington, the Washington National Opera continues to offer performances by the greatest talents the opera world has to offer, in works beloved and unfamiliar.

The Washington Ballet’s professional company consists of world-class dancers forming an ensemble core with apprentices. Together they perform a wide variety of works from the classical choreography of Marius Petipa and George Balanchine to contemporary pieces by Christopher Wheeldon, Jiří Kylián, Hans van Manen, Twyla Tharp, and Mark Morris to new creations by Alexei Ratmansky and Justin Peck.

Every year the professional and studio companies bring productions of the highest caliber to stages throughout the national capital area including the Harman Center for the Arts at the Sidney Harman Hall, the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the Warner Theatre, and Town Hall Education Arts Recreation Campus (THEARC).

The Kennedy Center houses and represents the best of American performative arts – theater, symphony, opera, and ballet – there is always an amazing performance to entertain.

The Art of Entertaining: A Kerrie Kelly Perspective

When we think of entertaining, the kitchen often takes center stage. It's where culinary creativity comes to life, where stories are shared over chopping boards, and where the heart of the home truly beats. Whether indoor or outdoor kitchen space, certain variables will always hold. The first is topline appliances are the best sous chefs. The second is that entertaining is a fine art.

74 JOHN ERIC HOME

ENTERTAINING WITH STYLE

Entertaining is not about perfection or impressing others – it's about creating moments of genuine connection and joy. So, as you prepare to host your next gathering, remember to focus on what truly matters: the people, the stories, and the laughter shared around the table. So, here's to raising a glass – or firing up the grill – as we toast to the joy of entertaining and the memories yet to be made.

Whether you're hosting a dinner party, a holiday gathering, or a casual get-together with friends, these tips will help you create an unforgettable experience for your guests.

75

All about ambiance. Creating the right atmosphere is key to setting the tone for your gathering. Consider the mood you want to evoke –cozy and intimate or lively and festive – and tailor your decor and lighting accordingly. Candles, string lights, and fresh flowers can all add warmth and charm to your space, while a great playlist sets the perfect backdrop for conversation.

Planning the menu. When planning your menu, aim for a balance of flavors and textures that will appeal to a variety of tastes. Incorporate seasonal ingredients and playful twists on classic dishes to keep things interesting. And don't forget to consider dietary restrictions and preferences – offering a few vegetarian or gluten-free options ensures that all your guests feel welcome and well-fed.

Time to taste. Whether you're serving a formal sitdown dinner or a casual buffet-style spread, presentation is key. Take the time to plate your dishes thoughtfully, using garnishes and fresh herbs to add color and texture. And don't be afraid to get creative – think outside the box with unexpected flavor combinations and playful serving vessels.

Tend the bar. Of course, no gathering is complete without a well-stocked bar. Offer a selection of wine, beer, and spirits to suit every taste. A signature cocktail can add a special touch. And don't forget to provide plenty of non-alcoholic options for those who prefer not to imbibe. Consider creating a DIY cocktail station where guests can mix and mingle while crafting their own custom drinks.

Entertaining options. Incorporate interactive elements into your gathering to keep guests engaged and entertained. Set up a photo booth with props and backdrops for fun and memorable snapshots or organize a game night with board games or outdoor lawn games like cornhole or bocce

ball. These activities encourage interaction and create opportunities for laughter and bonding.

Personal touch. Infuse your gathering with personal touches that reflect your style and personality. Create custom place cards or menus with handwritten notes for each guest or prepare a playlist of your favorite songs to set the mood. Small gestures like these show your guests that you've put thought and care into every detail, making them feel valued and appreciated.

Host with the most. As the host, your primary role is to ensure that your guests feel welcome and comfortable throughout the event. Anticipate their needs by providing ample seating and serving areas, and make sure that everyone knows where to find essentials like restrooms and coat racks. Be present and attentive, but also allow yourself to enjoy the festivities – after all, entertaining is about creating memories together, not just executing a flawless event.

By incorporating these tips into your entertaining repertoire, you'll create gatherings that are not only memorable but also meaningful. So, embrace your role as host with confidence and enthusiasm, and let the magic of entertaining unfold naturally. Here’s to many more unforgettable gatherings in the years to come!

As an interior designer, lifestyle expert, and advocate for fostering connections through gathering, Kerrie Kelly is passionate about the art of entertaining. It's about creating spaces and experiences that leave a lasting impact on guests, fostering genuine connections and cherished memories.

BLUEBERRY CHIFFON PIE

INGREDIENTS

9-12 large graham crackers, crushed into crumbs (about 1½ cups)

2 tbsp granulated sugar

6 tbsp butter, melted

1 can sweet and condensed milk

1 cup sour cream

½ cup fresh lemon juice (approx. 2 large lemons)

1 cup fresh blueberries, more for garnish zest of the lemons (approx. 1-2 tbsp) granulated sugar (approx. 2-3 tbsp)

¼ cup powdered sugar

1 tsp vanilla

DIRECTIONS

If making your own crust, combine graham cracker crumbs, granulated sugar, and melted butter. Mix until completely combined. Then press the mixture into the bottom and the sides of a pie pan. If you don't have one, you can use a 9-inch circle cake pan or an 8x8 baking dish.

When the pie is done, remove and let it cool. Cover and refrigerate.

When ready to serve, mix homemade whipping cream -- beat together whipping cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla until it has stiff peaks. Serve pie with a dollop of cream.

MIXOLOGY

TIPSY TEMPTATIONS

SHOW STOPPER

Glassware:

Rocks Glass

Ingredients:

1.5 oz. Old Forester Rye 100

.5 oz. Honey Syrup

.5 oz. Lemon Juice

.25 oz. Guava Juice

1 Dash Woodford Spicy Cherry Bitters

2 oz. Cawy Watermelon Soda

Garnish: Watermelon Ball

Technique: This is a straightforward technique of a shaken style cocktail, and how to make a collins style libations, however on a short / rocks glass platform.

Tools needed: Boston Shaker, Hawthorne Strainer, jigger, bar towel, ice, however a Cobbler Shaker can also be used. If you are using an ice bowl, make sure to have a good scoop, as using your shaker tin can damage it and therefore keep it from forming a proper seal.

Start by filling a cocktail shaker full of ice. Add the bitters, the juices, the honey syrup, and then the whiskey. Shake to a 13 count and then strain the drink over fresh ice into a rocks glass. Top with the watermelon soda, stir to integrate, and then garnish.

Entertainment comes in all types: Music, sports, award shows, movies, theater, arts… however, they are all enjoyable. The idea is always to find something that livens up your day-to-day, something that wows, something that feels that little bit more special. Like a classic form of entertainment, this drink starts out as a classic cocktail - The Gold Rush. The sweet and sour flavors of the lemon and honey (and its richness) balance out the whiskey and make it easy for everyone to enjoy, which is why the Gold Rush has been enjoyed for decades. The rest of the ingredients are themed for warmer weather and meant to add refreshment while being a little bit interesting. “Whiskey and Berries” isn’t an everyday flavor combination that you normally see. Rye whiskey is used here because it is big in body and spicy. Its higher strength stands up to the sweeter tones of the fruit juices. The guava juice adds a light roundness to the overall drink and works to act as a bridge between the watermelon and the other base ingredients. While the spiced cherry bitters up the red fruit flavors and bring a little over the top fruit forwardness perfect for the season and a stunning event. The drink is called the Show Stopper because, like any good form of entertainment, there needs to be a “wow” factor that can stop the show. Through the combination of seasonal flavors, classic techniques, and a little innovative flavor pairings, the Show Stopper hopefully won’t stop anyone from having a good time.

STANDING OVATION

Glassware:

Champagne Flute

Ingredients:

.5 oz. Hendricks Grand Cabaret Gin

.5 oz. Combier Original

1 Dash Woodford Reserve Orange Bitters

1 Rough Cut Sugar Cube

4 oz. Pierre Sparr Cremant Brut Reserve

Garnish: None

Directions: This is a built cocktail. Start with a chilled flute and add the rough cut sugar cube, then the bitters, then the gin and the orange liqueur, then top with Cremant. Be careful, as when the sparkling hits the cube it can bubble up fast, just take it easy and pour till the champagne settles down and the glass it almost full.

Technique: This is the way a classic Champagne Cocktail (of which this drink is based on) is made. Built in the glass. In old days, a bartender might use a twisted bar spoon to pour the champagne down to keep, but that is not necessary. If the crémant (sparkling wine from Alsace France) bubbles up to fast, just let it settle and then continue.

Tools needed: A cold Champagne flute and jigger. A bar spoon is always helpful to have around.

When thinking of elegant entertainment, the mind instantly goes to Champagne. At every sporting championship, every award show, every important party, champagne and sparkling wine has been a sign of victory for generations. Sparkling is a great cocktail ingredient. Think French 75, Kir Royal and, of course, the ever-famous Champagne Cocktail. This drink takes the build and style of what has worked for ages and updates it with a little twist. Brandy is traded out for gin and orange liqueur. The orange bitters add depth, as the bitter orange helps balance the sweet orange of the liqueur and adds more body to the gin. The sparkling crémant is bright and light. Mainly made from Pinot Blanc, the crémant doesn’t have the same bready body that a big traditional champagne would. Also, the wines of Pierre Sparr are from Alsace, which is a truly unique region and terroir. These wines have exceptional elegance, mixed with approachability and complexity that are signatures of the producer. Ultimately this twist of a classic is meant to be big and bright, both in texture and flavor, exactly the type of drink to raise a toast to victory to.

The drink takes the name Standing Ovation from the idea of those standing and clapping to toast a winner.

87

AFTER PARTY

Glassware:

Chilled Martini Glass

Ingredients:

2 oz. Elit Vodka

.75 oz. Warres White Port

.25 oz. Foro Vermouth

Garnish: Lemon Twist

Directions: Combine ingredients into a mixing glass already filled with ice. Count to 40 revolutions, and then taste the drink. If it is a little too strong for desired taste, continue to stir to a 50 or 60 count. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Technique: This cocktail utilizes the skill to stir. Stirring is used when combining and chilling ingredients and designed to not introduce air or bubbles.

Tools needed: Jigger, bar spoon, mixing glass, Julep or other specialty strainer, and of course always a bar towel.

Who doesn’t watch an award show and think of the “After Party”? Of course, when thinking of the glitzy and glamorous life, the Martini is the cocktail front of mind. The drink of Bond and Bogart, the martini is famous as “that” drink that pairs with entertainment and celebrations. This drink is made the classic way, which utilizes technique in order to gain a silky yet bold texture. Elit vodka is one of the best high-end vodkas on the market and is clean and crisp. It won’t burn like those that come from used lesser production techniques. The white port is all about adding decadence. Notes of golden raisin are sinfully sweet yet enjoyable and all of that flavor makes for a great component to layer on the dryness from the vodka. The foro dry vermouth creates a dash of balance. It holds the sweetness of the white port back just a touch, so the fullness and richness from the fortified wines elevates the vodka. The twist adds some citrus oils, which only make the libation have a touch more brightness and at the same time visually stand out on a Martini Glass.

The drink takes its name from the party we would all love to attend – the After Party.

Notes: This is a very strong cocktail. The strength can be adjusted by working on ratios with less vodka, however, even then this is an all-alcohol ingredient drink.

JOURNEY OF A TEEN GAMER

In this issue, I will be speaking about my journey with Fortnite. It has been quite the ride.

Fortnite is a third-person computer survival game. The player is dropped onto a huge island with up to 100 other players, and it's a showdown to see who's the last one standing. It's called a battle royale, and it can get intense.

You can play by yourself if you're feeling brave, you can team up with a friend, in what's called duos, or you can play with a squad of friends consisting of three or four players. Personally, I love teaming up with my friends—it's more fun that way.

You don't just start with all the cool gear though. You need to drop in from a flying "Battle Bus" and scavenge for weapons and other things as you go. It's like a mad dash to gear up and survive!

That's Fortnite in a nutshell. It's this wild, adrenaline-pumping game where you must fight to be the last one standing. And let me tell you, once you start playing, it's hard to stop…

91
RAFFAELE1 | DREAMSTIME.COM

Fortnite first started in 2017 with what is called Chapter 1, Season 1. I first dipped my toes into Fortnite in Chapter 1, Season 6 or 7, but it didn't really click with me. I only played on my grandparents' iPad, and it was more of a passing interest than a serious hobby.

Fast forward to late 2019, Chapter 2 Season 1 rolled around, and something just clicked. Suddenly, I found myself diving deep into the game, and when Chapter 2 Season 2 dropped, that's when I truly fell in love with Fortnite.

Over the years and the games seasons, I have loved playing the game. While the seasons may have changed, one thing has remained constant. I enjoy playing with my friends. Whether from childhood or classmates, Fortnite kept us connected, especially during the tough times of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Now that I'm old enough to do so, I've started dabbling in Fortnite tournaments. I might not win, but it's all about the thrill of the game and the chance to bond with friends. Fortnite isn't just a game for me—it's a source of fun, friendship, and unforgettable memories. And no matter what challenges come our way, I'll always come back to it with a smile on my face, ready for another adventure.

DESTINATIONS

There is not one more entertaining place on the planet than Las Vegas. The most famous attraction, of course, is the Strip, but there are many other things to do that do not involve cards, chips, or house money. In this issue of John Eric Home, we head to Las Vegas to be entertained…

The Las Vegas Strip is what most people associate with the city of Las Vegas. Best viewed at night, the city comes alive with thousands of illuminated neon lights; the views are themselves entertaining. But it is not just at night that the casinos shine, and it is not just gambling that they are all about – the architecture of the behemoth hotels and casinos are themselves unique and many offer entertaining attractions.

DESTINATION | LAS VEGAS

Looking for an undersea adventure? Mandalay Bay's Shark Reef Aquarium houses over 2,000 sea animals, including sharks, giant rays, endangered sea turtles, and even a Komodo dragon. Experience the life of an Aquarist with the Animal Encounters program, where you can feed the stingrays and crabs. If you are feeling more adventurous, take a virtual, 3-D journey to the South Pacific, where you can swim with humpback whales and dive with exotic sharks in the Bahamas.

Sharking isn’t your thing? No worries. The Paris Hotel is one of the best-known hotels in the area, thanks to its iconic replica of the Eiffel Tower that stretches into the Las Vegas skyline. In the resort, you’ll find a selection of French shops and even a recreation of the Paris Opera House. The Eiffel Tower is forty-six stories high about half the height of the original. The observation deck offers incredible views of the city.

Continuing with a European vibe, head over to the Venetian Hotel. It’s one of the grandest resorts in Las Vegas and is popular with couples on honeymoon or just for a romantic getaway. Inside the hotel, a shopping arcade has been designed to resemble the streets of Venice. Some of the top attractions in Venice have been recreated in the hotel, such as the Rialto Bridge and the Bridge of Sighs. One of the most famous features of the hotel is the Gondola Rides along the canals. If the romance bug is hitting you, after disembarking, there are wedding chapels nearby.

Of course, the Venetian is also home to the magical Sphere and everything about it is mind-blowing. It’s the world’s largest spherical structure – an electrified ball that measures 516 feet wide and 366 feet tall – which is covered in a wraparound, high-resolution screen. While the Sphere is a venue for concerts and shows, it also features its own attraction, The Sphere Experience. It is a unique blend of cutting-edge technology and immersive storytelling. Encounters with lifelike humanoid robots are common and it features a film by acclaimed director Darren Aronofsky, titled ‘Postcard from Earth.’

It’s incredible to see from various points around the Strip (though not really from the Strip; more on that later) or when you fly into Harry Reid International Airport. Inside Sphere Las Vegas is just as astonishing. It's like a Disneyland ride meets the greatest show on Earth — a spectacle for concerts like U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere or high-def films like "Postcard From Earth."

The gorgeous 14,000-square-foot botanical garden at the Bellagio is a nature lover's dream, but you don't have to be a flower aficionado to be in awe of this stunning display. Every season, it transforms before your eyes with a vibrant rainbow of color in full bloom. Over 10,000 fresh plants adorn the display, and interactive features such as the Tunnel of Love make you one with the flora. This installation also includes fountains, trellises, trees, and winding paths.

After you’ve your fill of casino attractions – and have possibly left some cash at the tables – it’s time to head up into the sky. SkyPod at the Stratosphere offers expansive views of Las Vegas. A well-known feature of the Las Vegas skyline, SkyPod boasts the tallest (1,149 feet) observation tower in the United States, a restaurant and bar, a selfie spot, and a wedding chapel. (Can’t forget Vegas’ cottage industry!) The adventurous can choose from several thrill-seeking rides, including the Big Shot, Insanity, or the X-Scream. Yes, the names say it all.

If you're a fan of punk rock or simply looking for a unique and fascinating attraction in Las Vegas, the Punk Rock Museum is a must-visit destination. Located just off the Strip, this hidden gem showcases the rich history and culture of punk rock through a wide range of exhibits and memorabilia. Don't miss the chance to see original instruments played by punk legends The Ramones and The Clash. The museum also offers a dynamic and immersive experience, featuring audio and video installations that transport you back to the heyday of punk rock. Enjoy interviews and live performances from the most influential bands of the era as you explore the museum's interactive exhibits.

Finally, visitors love the aerial view of Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon from a helicopter ride. There are several helicopter tour companies in Las Vegas offering everything from a 15-minute flip over the city of Las Vegas to longer tours that take in the Grand Canyon, Hoover Dam, and the scenery around Las Vegas. This is a great option for people who have limited time in the area.

STYLIST

FASHION FORWARD

Heading out to the theater? Try on one of these elegant styles to distinguish yourself from the crowds…

A LITTLE BIT OF FEATHER, AND WE AREN’T TALKING BOAS

Simple, elegant, and a little bit of je ne sais quoi, a touch of feathers around the wrist, on the hem of a skirt, or around the neckline adds a small touch of drama while keeping the look elevated and sophisticated.

A SIMPLE EFFORTLESS DRESS CAN ALWAYS BE BEST

A one-stop-wonder dress is always the easiest way to go about event dressing. And, of course, black always steals the night.

APPLIQUE IS OK FOR A FUN YET TASTEFUL THEATER LOOK

Fluttering flowers, pinhole designs… the right applique can give you the right look at the performance.

NOT IN THE MOOD OR DON’T HAVE THE TIME FOR A FULL DRESS-UP? TOTALLY GET IT. SYNCH THESE WITH YOUR STYLE…

NO, CARDIGANS AREN’T JUST RELEGATED TO YOUR GREAT-AUNT LOUISE

You can’t rock up to the theatre in loungewear and slippers, but a light, oversized cardi and ballet flats might just be the next best thing. Just make sure to style yours with your best jeans or tailored trousers.

AND, SURE, THOSE TAILORED SEPARATES

If you’re heading to an evening performance directly after work, you’ll be glad to know that smart, tailored separates are perfectly great. Just be sure to err on the modern side rather than stuffy.

THE BEATLES

The Beatles are getting the big-screen biopic treatment in not just one film, but a Fab Four of movies that will give each band member their spotlight — all of which are to be directed by Sam Mendes.

For the first time, the Beatles, long among the stingiest rights granters, are giving full life and music rights to a movie project. Sony Pictures announced a deal that may dwarf all music biopics that have come before it, with the stories of Paul McCartney, John Lennon, George Harrison, and Ringo Starr spread out over a quartet of films. (AP)

HOTEL CALIFORNIA

The song “Hotel California” became one of rock’s most indelible singles. Nearly a half-century later, handwritten pages of lyrics-in-the-making have become the center of an unusual criminal trial. Rare-book dealer Glenn Horowitz, former Rock & Roll Hall of Fame curator Craig Inciardi, and memorabilia seller Edward Kosinski are charged with conspiring to own and try to sell manuscripts of “Hotel California” and other Eagles hits without the right to do so.

The three have pleaded not guilty, but the Manhattan district attorney’s office says the defendants connived to obscure the documents’ disputed ownership, despite knowing that Henley said the pages were stolen. (AP)

ENTERTAINMENT NATION

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF AMERICAN HISTORY

3RD FLOOR, WEST, RAY AND DAGMAR DOLBY HALL OF AMERICAN CULTURE

From its red-carpet entryway to a yellow brick road, “Entertainment Nation” immerses visitors in the dramatic arc of the American story as told through the power and influence of theater, television, film, music, and sports. With approximately 200 objects, the 7,200-square-foot, multimedia exhibition is the Smithsonian’s first dedicated exploration of entertainment history. Through iconic objects from the museum’s renowned collection and graphics, video, and compelling stories, the exhibit showcases how Americans have long used entertainment to both elicit delight and understand different viewpoints.

Audiences are captivated by objects from culture makers such as Muhammad Ali and Ali Wong who broke barriers, Tejana singer Selena, Star Wars’ C-3PO and R2-D2, and the enduring magical pull of the Ruby Slippers along with the charm of the first Muppets. Never-before-on-view objects include a pair of sneakers Fred Rogers wore on Mister

Rogers’ Neighborhood, guitars from music legends Prince, Jose Feliciano, Toby Keith, and Paul Simon, a cape from astrologer and television personality Walter Mercado and Michelle Yeoh’s Star Trek: Discovery costume. There are six bronze touchable models (made from 3D scans) that visitors can interact with through visual descriptions and QR codes. Five are actual-size models, including the Ruby Slippers, Gertrude Ederle’s swim goggles, a “Miracle on Ice” hockey glove, Nipsey Hussle’s chains and pendants, and a Wurlitzer tabletop jukebox. There is also a reduced-size bas relief in bronze of a circus poster on display. Navigation touch pads are available on the kiosks in front of five object cases that are part of the micro galleries on comedy, music and television. A vivid replica of Prince’s “Yellow Cloud” guitar provides visitors with a photo opportunity in front of the spotlight case of the actual guitar he used in Purple Rain.

UAE Marks 50 Years of US Friendship with ‘Story Diplomacy’ Videos

A project launched three years ago by the United Arab Emirates embassy in Washington celebrates the UAE’s 50th anniversary and highlights its relationship with the United States in a unique way: through a series of short videos that could be called “story diplomacy.”

The project is called 50 Years | 50 Faces and started with the story of the current UAE Ambassador to the United States Yousef Al Otaiba when he was a student-athlete at Georgetown. It was finalized with an interview in which Otaiba reflected on the breadth and depth of the UAE’s friendship with the United States.

“ We spoke with Emiratis and Americans, across decades, and from all walks of life – artists and athletes, educators and entertainers, poets and even presidents,” the ambassador says in the series finale.

Former U.S. President George W. Bush, who was the first sitting U.S. president to visit the UAE, contributed to the collection of videos, as did the grandson of former President Jimmy Carter. Jason Carter spoke of efforts by the Carter Center to eradicate Guinea worm disease and the UAE’s

support for that and other global health projects.

The series of short videos also features a pitmaster who brought Texas-style brisket to the UAE, an Emirati teenager who loves science, space and Star Wars, and whose experiment was launched into space by NASA; and a female ice hockey player whose skills earned her and her teammates the opportunity to meet the Washington Capitals ice hockey team.

Meridian Ball Hits the Jackpot in Its 55th Year

Poker, roulette, blackjack, and more were the hit of the night at the 55th annual Meridian Ball last October. ‘Casino Night’ was the year’s theme of Meridian International Center’s biggest event of the year. It brought together diplomats, members of Congress and the administration, and people from the public and private sectors to benefit the center’s mission for global leadership exchange, training programs, and cultural activities.

VIP guests dined at one of 34 embassy-hosted dinners before migrating to the Meridian House for an evening of dancing and dialogue, specialty cocktails, and desserts. Next door, the White-Meyer House opened for guests to listen to music and play

casino games with fake money they received at the door.

A non-partisan, non-profit diplomacy center that believes greater understanding and collaboration between the United States and the world leads to a more prosperous future for all, the Meridian International Center has hosted its annual ball for 55 years. The event has long brought together guests from across the political spectrum to engage in thought-provoking conversation.

‘A Diplomat’s Diplomat’ - Moroccan Envoy Named Ambassador of the Year Morocco’s ambassador to the United States, Her Royal Highness Princess Lalla Joumala Alaoui, was lauded by fellow diplomats and U.S. officials at a lunch in Washington, where she received the National US - Arab Chamber of Commerce’s Ambassador of the Year award.

Scores of diplomats, including the ambassadors of Jordan, Kuwait, Mauritania, Rwanda, Senegal, Spain, Tunisia, and the Arab League, attended the ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton in Washington. Joumala will be succeeded by Morocco’s former ambassador to South Africa Youssef Amrani.

San Francisco DECORATOR SHOWCASE

The story of the San Francisco Decorator Showcase began in 1977, when Nan Rosenblatt, a former San Francisco University High School parent and an accomplished interior designer, and Philip Fernandez, the first president of the school’s Parents Association, conceived the first Showcase to raise funds for University’s financial aid program. Since then, the Showcase has taken place at some of the most prestigious addresses in some of the most breathtaking neighborhoods of San Francisco.

This year, the 45th Decorator Showcase will be open to the public from April 27 through May 27. The featured home at 2898 Broadway, is located at the top of the Pacific Heights neighborhood. 27 interior designers will bring their individual styles to 27 rooms of the home.

In this special feature for John Eric Home, we explore this property’s Hollywood history, neighborhood, architects, and beneficiary…

THE GRAND ARCHITECT OF 2898 BROADWAY

Commissioned in 1899 by his father Duane Bliss, architect Walter D. Bliss designed this magnificent home at 2898 Broadway in the Dutch Colonial Revival style. Who was Walter D. Bliss?

Early Days

Duane Bliss, the father of the home’s architect, had journeyed west from Massachusetts during the Gold Rush, but his son Walter (born in Nevada in 1874), returned directly to his father’s home state. Walter left the West Coast to pursue a Bachelor of Science in Architecture degree at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. This would become a life-changing event.

Staying on the East Coast, and while working as a draftsman for McKim, Mead & White in New York, Bliss met William Faville as they both worked for the firm. They would go on to form one of the most important architectural

partnerships not just in San Francisco but in history of American architecture.

Return to San Francisco

Together with Faville, Bliss designed the building for the Oakland Public Library in Oakland, California. The construction was partly funded by the Carnegie Foundation and now serves as the African American Museum and Library at Oakland and is registered on the National Register of Historic Places. In 1902, the pair designed the Rialto Building in San Francisco, which was then destroyed by the San Francisco fire of 1906. Bliss and Faville rebuilt the building, and it too has been added to the National Register of Historic Places listings in San Francisco.

One of the partners’ most iconic designs is that of the San Francis Hotel on Union Square. In 1906, they built what would be the third and lasting version of the hotel. Previously, the hotel had been built, destroyed by the San Francisco fire of 1906, and then rebuilt. With Bliss and Faville’s design, the San Francis became the largest hotel on the Pacific Coast in the early twentieth century.

This architectural team is responsible for many of San Francisco’s iconic buildings. The Magee Building, the second

114 JOHN ERIC HOME

Columbia Theater, and the Geary Theater among them. Today, the Geary houses the American Conservatory Theater, and it too is listed on the National Register of Historic Places listings in San Francisco.

Bliss and Faville imprinted their architectural mark on the city of San Francisco. This year’s Decorator’s Showcase home is one example of their genius. The pair terminated their partnership amicably in 1925.

List of other lauded Bliss and Faville buildings:

The Banker's Hotel, Oakland

The Mission of the Good Samaritan Building of the Episcopal Community Center, San Francisco

The James Leary Flood Mansion, San Francisco.

The Southern Pacific Building, San Francisco.

The Metropolitan Club of San Francisco, San Francisco

Guigné Court, Hillsborough

The Hallidie Plaza branch of the Bank of Italy, San Francisco

The Matson Building and Annex, San Francisco

State of California Office Building, San Francisco

The Administration Building, Atascadero

The Atascadero Printery, Atascadero

The Southern Pacific Railroad Company's Sacramento Depot, Sacramento

The Stockton United States Post Office, Stockton

THERE’S NOTHING LIKE BILLIONAIRE’S ROW AND PACIFIC HEIGHTS

After the 1906 San Francisco earthquake and fire caused cataclysmic damage to the city of San Francisco, many of its wealthy denizens chose not to rebuild their Nob Hill homes and instead set their eyes upward. Specifically, to Pacific Heights. The best views in the city were located there and with the real estate that became available, the moneyed bought in and settled into the neighborhood.

Pacific Heights has been an elite enclave of moneyed families ever since. The Gettys and the Trainas are just a few of the names who have ruled Pacific Heights. More recently, a wave of wealthy tycoons, tech gurus, and even politicians have made their mark on the neighborhood. The tech neighbors’ move to Billionaire’s Row was largely due to the influence of San Francisco's social king, Trevor Traina, who founded several startups. Oracle billionaire Larry Ellison, Apple designer Jony Ive, and Yelp CEO Jeremy Stoppelman (to name a few) now mingle with San Francisco's "Old Money" crowd.

The neighborhood always attracts attention. Located quite near to the Presidio, it is a beautiful area of the city. It’s well-known for its high-end and prestigious restaurants which feature spectacular culinary experiences. Exquisite boutique shops dot the street. The architectural magnificence of the neighborhood should never be underrated. The reason that Pacific Heights is considered such a gem, however, is the astonishing views and properties that it boasts. Overlooking the bay, luxury high-rise apartments and many of the largest residential houses in San Francisco are found here. Its streets are filled with the grandest and most opulent homes in the city. It is thought to be the most popular and most expensive place to live in San Francisco.

THIS YEAR’S SHOWHOUSE HAS ALWAYS BEEN FAMOUS FOR QUITE SOME TIME

The historic 1899 mansion near the Presidio – home to this year’s San Francisco Decorator Showcase – is no stranger to celebrity. A true masterpiece on the iconic Gold Coast, this ultra-luxury corner home defines elegance. With its aweinspiring panoramic views of the San Francisco Bay and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge, the home is provided with an unrivaled backdrop. It is this backdrop, and the home itself, that has drawn Hollywood producers and starlets. It has been featured in many films on the silver screen.

In 1960, the Dutch Colonial Revival mansion appeared in Portrait in Black. This famed American neo-noir melodrama film, directed by Michael Gordon, starred Lana Turner and Anthony Quinn. In this house, it’s not difficult to imagine Lana Turner, playing San Francisco socialite Sheila Cabot, becoming increasingly disturbed as she cares for her ailing husband and falls in love with her husband’s doctor. (This, of course, leads to a series of unfortunate events, resulting in the death of the husband and an ensuing murder investigation that reveals a surprise culprit).

Another thriller in which this home featured was the 1985 film Jagged Edge. Also, in the genre of American neo-noir, this legal thriller film was directed by Richard Marquand and was one of the last films to be released during his lifetime. The film stars Glenn Close, Jeff Bridges, Peter Coyote, and Robert Loggia. Loggia was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance.

More recently, the property was used in both the 2001 romance Sweet November and the 2013 Woody Allen film Blue Jasmine. Unfortunately, the scenes in which it was featured were cut from the released films.

Now, that we have explored the fundamentals of this year’s Decorator Showcase home, stay tuned for our next issue of John Eric Home when we will bring you the amazing results of this iconic house’s room transformations. The San Francisco Decorator Showcase benefits The San Francisco University High School’s Financial Aid Program which endows its exceptional student body.

THE NATURAL BEAUTY OF

Tunnel Creek Road

Located 30 minutes away from Reno and an hour from South Lake Tahoe, 7400 Tunnel Creek Road is one of the most unique properties in Northern Nevada. Many say that it is very much like a Frank Lloyd Wright-inspired home. Nestled in a copse of trees, it’s truly remarkable.

“My favorite feature of the home,” says Bryan Drakulich, listing agent of the property, “is how the architect enhanced the location of the home with this fantastic view of Slide Mountain. He did a phenomenal job making the deck an extension of the living room, making the forest become one with the house. How the architect built it makes it feel like it’s one with the land.”

The property, both inside and out, is landscaped to work with its surrounding land. The result is incredible as the house blends into its natural surroundings. Outside, landscaped walkways are made from Nevada quartzite. A private creek flows through the property complete with a waterfall and pond. Inside, nature makes its presence known too. Zebra wooden cabinets in the library and the great room, custom cabinetry made with alder wood and burl wood accents in the kitchen, custom hickory hardwood floors inlaid with quartzite stone, and custom beechwood ceilings all add to its natural feel. Floor-to-ceiling glass windows add to the effect.

127

But it’s not just about nature – for as beautiful and relaxing as nature might be, the home also has many bells and modern whistles: a 1,100-bottle capacity climate-controlled wine room, with an adjoining wet bar, a media room, exercise room, and game room featuring an access point to an outdoor patio and bocce ball court. Oh, and there’s a golf room with its own putting green.

What would it be like to live in this home?

“It would be a dream,” says Drakulich. “Waking up in the trees would automatically energize me for the day. I wouldn’t have to leave my house because I have a gym downstairs for a daily workout. Then, I would take care of business in my home office. Later, I would have friends over and choose a bottle of wine to open from the climate-controlled wine room. We would then sit outside on the gorgeous deck surrounded by fireplace and fire pit with a perfect place to take in the view of the mountains and trees.”
