24 legs cut from 2’x4’x1/4” Board of Oak 24 legs cut from 2’x4’ Plexi Sheet Fishing Line

A CNC Router cut two 22” table top with 48 teeth. Each tooth hides a quarter inch square notch for the legs to grab. 24 legs are from a 2’x4’ oak plank and 24 are from a 2’x4’ plexiglass sheet. The legs contour and give shape to the body of the table. Fishing line cinches the body of the table, creating tension for the legs to secure to two discs.

The structural materials play the same role and form. The inner layer extenuates the tension function of the fishing line that is part of the joinery of the table. The outer layer emphasizes the compression function of the legs to create a ghostly form that pulsates from the body.

These table legs contour so that the binding gives the form a big squeeze. Pick up the table and you’ll feel the void shaped by the stacks of plexi legs around an untouchable hourglass. Set the table where you chose, and the 48 rounded feet serves to minimize surface contact with the ground. Set your coffee on the table top and feel the 48 edge rim to keep objects from sliding off.

The lamp’s bones are comprised of 8 arms that grab onto 4 discs. The intricate structure was required just so that the rattan could be slipped in and out and through the inner and outer rings of the four layers with great tension and resistance. Resistance was combated by soaking the rattan in soapy hot water, but the act of embroidering was still met with great resistance.

An even number of rectangular holes are cut around the rings to ensure that each end would meet its own starting point. The bulb hook fits under the top disc to hold the shade to the chord at the light bulb. The projection disk fits under the arms of the shade to diffuse light and project the increments at which the rattan weaves around the shade. Weaving the rattan so subtly around the structure laterally projects larger diamonds mixing like lattice on the walls. Projections above and below are designed to squeeze from the hourglass. Designed to hang stationary, but at the lightest touch, it spins and so does the room.

1”x2” Southern Yellow Pine Planks

MDF Blocks

Wood Glue

The cloud started as a long 1”x2” planks of southern yellow pine. Dividing the wood into long dowels, we cut off small cubes and assembled mass piece by piece. The one piece then fit around two blocks of MDF to lift the cloud, exposing the public realm. The premise is built around a response to the impact of the remote workplace. Like decay, 2/3 of the build-able volume became unnecessary and the remnants float about.

THE CLOUD

The Cloud Fall 2021

Professor David Lee introduced me to grasshopper to better generate an evenly randomized mass in Rhinoceros. This was used to assemble the freestanding physical model that is The Cloud. Offices have transformed in response to the homeward migration of 2/3 of the workforce. A post-Covid office should offer flexible and enjoyable access for physical meetings, collaborations, as well as support a physical host for the virtual office.

90 lb Canson Drawing Paper

Color: Cream

A Sine curve and adjacent lines are scored and pre-folded on a sheet of paper. See where the continuous curve pinches and locks in place, this holds the form of the wings. The spring-loaded tension and continuous structure working at a smaller scale can prove that the object could be scaled up to be a habitable pavilion.
