On behalf of Air Niugini, welcome to the second edition of its Global Destinations magazine. than 600 large and small islands, most of which are fringed with coral reefs and the sub-surface wildlife that they provide a home to.

In this edition, we feature the diverse attractions of Papua New Guinea as well as the many interesting and varied international destinations that Air Niugini flies to. We invite you first to take a peek at our colourful festivals that occur in various parts of the country throughout the year, where displays of brilliant costumes and traditional refineries celebrate the rich and ancient cultural heritage. These include the International Orchid Spectacular, the Milamala Yam Festival (Milne Bay Province), the mysterious Mask Festival and the Warwagira Festival in the East New Britain Province. The famous Goroka Show, the spectacular Mt Hagen Show and the stunning display of the Suli Muli dancers with their iconic black painted faces and distinct headdresses during the Enga Cultural Show are all unique showcases of Papua New Guinea’s rich and diverse heritage. The topography of our country is equally diverse and rugged – from snow-capped Mt Wilhelm and Mt Giluwe along the mountainous spine of the mainland, to the grass valleys and forests of the Highlands down to the coastal river deltas and mangrove swamps. Between these extremes are microenvironments where many weird and wonderful plants, animals, birds and insects are found. Then of course, there are more

As well as showcasing our wonderful country, Air Niugini also offers our customers opportunities to visit Asia, Australia and the Pacific region with the variety of packages available in this magazine. Air Niugini’s focus this year is to expand the airline’s global reach and the continuation of major upgrades to our services. Hand in hand with this focus our priority is also the delivery of exemplary services to our valued travelling public. Providing efficient, affordable and reliable passenger services remains the airline’s “core business” right across the nation, the South Pacific region and beyond. Last year, the airline began its fleet rationalisation in line with its domestic and regional operations and introduced its first Fokker70 jet aircraft. By early 2017 there will be 9 Fokker70 aircrafts. The aircraft provides greater speed, reliability and comfort for our passengers. In the coming months we will be expanding our schedule and capacity with the introduction of a second service to Narita, Japan and increasing frequency to Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands. We will be inaugurating services in December 2016 to the Federated States of Micronesia and

medical travel

medical travel with Accommodation If you have a pre-existing medical condition, prior to booking accommodation you need to make sure that you locate yourself close to the hospital in the region. If you require assistance with this, the Air Nuigini tours team will be more than happy to help you.

Medication

If you have a pre-existing medical condition that requires you to take medication while travelling, make sure your doctor writes you a medical note. The note should outline the type of medication and its required intake as well as stating that it is for your personal use only. Make sure that you pack enough medication to cover your entire travel. In the event that you do run out, refill a script with a doctor present. Your doctor or specialist will also be able to provide you with recommendations and tips for safe travel.

Travel Health Insurance

It is strongly recommended that you take out a comprehensive cover for travel health insurance especially if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Make sure that, in the event of illness or injury, it covers all of your expenses. If you have a partner and/or dependents, check that your insurance covers them as well.

24

Destinations Food and Water Consumption

If you’re travelling to a destination where the food and water is not universally sanitised then ensure that you only eat cooked food and fruit that has not been peeled or cut. Always drink bottled water and use this to brush your teeth with. Avoid ice in your drinks.

Vaccinations and Preventative Medication

Consult your doctor to find out whether you need to be vaccinated or take preventative medication when travelling to destinations prone to disease. Avoid interaction with animals that carry diseases like rabies. Ask your doctor for any other precautionary information for travelling to these destinations.

AVOIDING DEEP VEIN THROMBOSIS (DVT)

To avoid blood clots, wear loose clothing, flex your calves while sitting, walk up and down the aisle occasionally, stay hydrated with water, drink minimal alcohol and avoid sleeping tablets. If you have a pre-existing condition that puts you at risk of DVTs, wear compression stockings during the flight.

Medical Supplies and Kits If you are travelling to a destination that has subsidiary medical facilities and supplies, make sure that you pack supplementary supplies so that you don’t run out. This may include: prescribed medications, female hygiene products, contraception and nappies. Be sure to also pack a basic medical kit that contains analgesics, a disinfectant lotion, bandaids, insect repellent and sunscreen.

On Arrival Back Home

If you have been exposed to a pathogen while travelling to a destination, it can take a couple of weeks for the symptoms to present. If you become sick on arrival back home with non-descript fever, rashes, vomiting and/or diarrhea please seek medical attention.

Every November, Alotau showcases the Kenu & Kundu Festival.

Kenu & Kundu Festival Exploraeys’ MilnenBating fasci s and Bat ClalvCeaves. Sku

The annual Kenu and Kundu Festival which launched in 2003 pays homage to Milne Bay’s fascinating heritage. With their rich connection to the water, the locals recreate the beautifully crafted war canoes that were once built to endure battle and secure victory against the enemy. During the festival, you can witness proud locals dressed in traditional warrior costumes battle it out against competitors in thrilling canoe races. The sound of beating, rhythmic kundu drums, customarily used in rituals, is also a highlight of this festival. Make sure you check out the unique cultural performances amongst all the wonderful festivities.

asia

Asia

Asia is a vast continent that offers so many contrasts in terms of its landscapes, people and flavours. Visit the bustling city of Hong Kong to shop until you drop, or escape the hustle and bustle on a stunning tropical island in Indonesia.

The Philippines With 7,000 islands dotted throughout the Philippines, there’s never a dull moment for visitors to the region. Travel through never-ending rice fields, trek up volcanoes, dive glorious reefs, bask on pristine beaches and island hop. There’s so much to see and do in the tropics.

Indonesia With over 13,000 islands stretching across the archipelago of Indonesia, diversity and beauty are predominant features of the region. While its capital, Jakarta, is a fast paced city showcasing a collision of cultures and people, Bali is a laid-back retreat where the best of the tropics can be enjoyed.

Singapore Singapore is a melding pot of cultures boasting a blend of Malay, Chinese, Indian and western influences. Singapore city is renowned for its pristine environs and takes gastronomical and shopping ventures to a whole new level. The city also has a flourishing arts scene which adds a sparkle to this already dazzling urban centre.

JAPAN

Japan is a country that seamlessly blends traditional culture with an edgy, contemporary attitude. Japan’s capital, Tokyo, demonstrates this perfectly with its hunger for innovation and preservation of age old traditions. It’s what makes Japan such a fascinating culture. Well, that and its spectacular cuisine.

Hong Kong An aerial shot of Hong Kong at night conjures up images of stalagmites, such is the proximity of its skyscrapers in the city’s CBD. Underneath Hong Kong’s urbane façade, however, lies a city rich in cultural diversity with a mighty fine gastronomy record. Hong Kong is renowned for its endless shopping opportunities.
