Disregarded Series Introduction This series, spread over four chapters, reflects on the relationship between humans and other animals. Everyday imagery suggests that we long for greater connection to the flow of nature, yet we often dismiss those connections in our thoughts and behaviour. These photographs illustrate the isolation and estrangement, this longing and this rejection, and our attempts to bridge these lost connections in our daily existence. The first chapter, Not the Real Thing, contemplates hints in our everyday world of the complexity of our relationship with animals, and the animal imagery, symbolism and
mementoes we incorporate in our daily lives. The second chapter, Small Deaths, looks at the toll we exact on other animals and the unmourned deaths we humans inflict on the world. This third chapter, Accommodation, illustrates the ambivalence, disquiet and longing that accompany our estrangement from our natural heritage. The fourth chapter, Animal Gods, considers the talismanic and near-talismanic use of animal representations and remains within human living spaces.
