Appalachian State University | 2011 DOE Solar Decathlon
The Solar Homestead takes inspiration from the vernacular dwellings of the early Appalachian settlers. Like the early homesteads, the design is composed of a series of small functional spaces centered around a great porch. The design breaks down into a series of modules, each with an independent function, space, and trailer foundation to make the dwelling modular, marketable, and transportable.

The great porch is shaded by a bifacial solar canopy. The canopy defines space, filters light, and generates solar energy to power the net zero home. Similar, to the modular trailer foundation below, the structure of the canopy is supported by telescoping columns. The columns allow the canopy to be raised for use or lowered to a height better suited for highway transportation.

Program and Environmental Interaction | Summer 2016
Throughout our investigation of innovation, the connection between the individual and the built environment was clear. A series of built prototypes initiated investigations of materials, mechanisms for interaction, fabrication processes, and languages of detail.

Eco Romania
Research Studio | 2018
Eco Romania research studio, ongoing through May 2018, looks to develop a site in rural Romania with attention to social and environmental responsibility. Research, programming, and design have determined that a touristic resort, selective micro cabin development, and a reconsideration of the campground can be used to revitalize a depopulating area Simultaneously a fabrication facility and vocational program can be implemented to promote contemporary building techniques, leverage benefits of prefabrication, and retool a diminishing population. An eco lodge was developed to serve micro cabins, guest lodging, and create connection across the site. The structure is located in a neglected part of the site and will remediate previous environmental damage. In addition to housing the public and back of house hotel program the lodge serves as a bridge to cross a dividing waterway and connect the developed side of the site to the more remote, enabling controlled camping activities.

The assembly of the lodge building is based on employing and retraining a diminishing workforce. A nearby fabrication and assembly facility will be used to implement contemporary approaches to timber framing, prefabrication, and modular construction. The facility is designed to enable fabrication of the lodge, guest houses, and micro cabins; additionally the it will enable vocational training of construction and tourism workforce.
