MISSION TEAM 9

YOUTH DEVELOPMENT

LEARNING For our learning requirements, our teams looked at a couple impactful aspects of today’s youth development, with an emphasis on technology’s role in changing mindsets as well as the influence of low-income environments in relation to opportunity in education and resources. As a team, we viewed the short documentary “Generation Like: Teens, Social Media and Technology,” Our students noticed the multi-dimensional effect that technology has had on our community’s youth, ranging from self-image to the international networking provided by these mediums. Similarly, the effect that technology has had: on children’s empathy is monumental, allowing access:to first-hand, individual experiences to widen young understanding: of our relationship with the world. We also reviewed our experience with Meals on Wheels, a nationwide non-profit offering virtual opportunities to volunteer services to America’s low-income youth. This activity further emphasized the uptake in empathy towards youth in our country, especially as a result of COVID-19, which further restricted resources for communities around the country (and the world).

SERVICE Our team practiced service through utilizing virtual nonprofits, including the Braid Mission and Meals on Wheels. The Braid Mission is a nationwide non-profit that helps build morale for foster children, giving adults around the country the opportunity to write words of motivation and hope through emails and letters. After submitting the letters, our team reflected on the effect of youth service, recognizing the power of words to inspire passions and aspirations for middle and high school students. Meals on Wheels provides multiple services for online volunteering with children, ranging from care packages, decorating lunch boxes, hosting fundraisers and creating greeting cards. Each member of the team was allowed to choose the service they wanted to pursue, and we discussed the impact of working virtually with the kids and projects we are working on! Our service continued to show our mission team the incredible opportunities of virtual networking, meeting with people across the country for a common goal of improving youth development.

NETWORKING Our Section 3 Event focused on the intersection of children and sexual reproductive health, placing an emphasis on how organizations like Planned Parenthood works to educate youth on safe sex and prevention of STDs. Our team learned about the impact of sexual health and wellbeing, as well as the preventative steps that can be taken to avoid potential harm in these areas.

ADVOCACY Our mission team focused on spreading awareness about the impact of social media on young generations, specifically middle and high school students. Through posting various public service announcements on screen time limits, cyber etiquette and awareness of biased sources, we were able to share the information we learned about having safe and healthy online interactions during the digital age.

AMBITIONS Our team hopes to specify our scopes in the future, specifically working with areas of youth development depending on individual interests. Creating different squads with various youth focuses, such as education, food insecurity, relationships and mindfulness, will help us reach more people in our community. We also hope to bring in more partners in the future and continue to work with our current connections, in order to expand our knowledge and impact.
