Joe Biber My inspiration for my photographs comes more from classical photography than from that of contemporary artists. I think I'm especially drawn to the work of Robert Frank, Irving Penn, and Georgia O'Keefe. I also like Helmut Newton's work; although it is more contemporary in terms of subject matter, his use of light and composition feel more classical to me. At this point in my career, I tend to photograph images that speak to me on some narrative level…pictures that can tell a bit of a story. It can be an abstract notion like "flying"…a girl's hair, or a bird's wings-- that suggests freedom or possibility. Or it can simply be an image that conveys an idea without showing the whole thing; a line along the top of a female body, or a world within the colored iris of an eyeball. It's important to me to present the world I observe in a way that's somehow honest and objective, and let the viewer take from the image what they will. I suppose it's a somewhat photojournalistic approach to non-journalistic subjects…an attempt to honestly tell the stories that I see happening around me every day. 22
