I-680 Crumbles Under Pressure The photo at the right was taken recently looking east towards Crescent from the county road exit on I-680. The weight and flow of the flood waters have taken their toll as was expected. Luckily, many of the gravel roads that have been under water are proving to be in fairly good shape.

Crescent Gets Hit Hard If you were in town on the evening of August 29th you know what we’re referring to. Baseball-, and some say grapefruit-sized hail made a mess of our homes, vehicles and crops. Most of us have never seen hail this size!

Maintenance Building Open House! The Crescent Maintenance Facility Building will be open Wednesday, September 7th from 5 p.m. to 7, for the public to tour. Refreshments will be served and a baseball game will be played at 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting) to help celebrate! A big thank-you to all who helped in making this a facility that the residents of Crescent can be proud of many years to come.

Back To School! Our Back to School Night was a huge success! Many of our Crescent families attended and met the teachers and dropped off their school supplies. Our PTO provided frozen treats for students. It was a welcome relief from the warm day. Students completed their first few days of school and are ready to dig into new learning. We are excited to see familiar faces as well as new students who have chosen Crescent as their school. We are privileged to work in such a caring and supportive community. We look forward to another great year. Help Us Collect! • We will start collecting Hy-Vee grocery receipts (from any store location) September 1. The receipts must have a DATE and AMOUNT on them. This collection will run from September 1 – December 31. Hy-Vee donates cash back directly to our school for our receipts. • We will also start collecting Super Saver grocery receipts (from any store location) September 1. The receipts must have a DATE and AMOUNT on them. This collection will run from September 1 – March 31, 2012. Super Saver allows us to buy school supplies and equipment from its online catalog with the receipt points that we collect. • We continue to collect Box Tops and Labels for Education (Campbell’s soup labels) year-round. There is a collection box located in the Peoples Bank lobby in Crescent. During school months, these collections can also be dropped off at the school. Thank you in advance for your help with these collections!

W hat’s Up at CECC?

Submitted by Linda Brewer

Like death and taxes, the new school year is inevitable. And somewhat like death and

taxes, the school kids, at the beginning of summer, will tell you they dread it. But as the summer draws to a close, most of them are really looking forward to a new school year. As this is written,

Welcome Home!

What better way to say “Welcome Home, Dad” than with flags and sidewalk chalk. Major Eric Nelson arrived home August 11th after more than eight months in Afghanistan. That’s his son, Kyler, with the sidewalk chalk.

“big school” is beginning this week. We at CECC will miss the school kids who have been here full time, especially the kids going into kindergarten. Most of them have been with us since they were two or three, and we’ll admit to a few tears as they climb on the school bus.

We did have our Back to School Bash this week, and the kids spent the whole day

in the bounce house and playing in the water. The weather was great despite a forecast of rain, and some of our alumni joined us for the day. We thank Romano True Value Hardware for renting us the bounce house at a discounted rate. They are always most accommodating, and we appreciate it.

Our preschool class does not start until the day after Labor Day. The kids who are here for

full time care have preschool class every day. But you can sign your child up for just preschool, either two or three days a week. Preschool starts at 9:00 and ends at 11:30. If you are interested in preschool for your child or just want more information, you may call us at 5459016 or e-mail at cecckids@aol.com. Or better yet, stop by to see the facility and meet the teachers and kids with your child. We are located in the basement of the Community of Christ Church in Crescent.

We’ve had a couple of requests to say a bit about what we do in preschool. It is a chance

for children to get acclimated to a school environment but is a little less structured. We work on the things you would expect like names, numbers, the alphabet, etc., but we usually use curriculum units focused on what the kids (and teachers) get interested in. So the topics will vary from year to year. A few of the units we’ve studied in the past include the ocean, fairy tales, dinosaurs, children around the world, health and safety and the like.

Because you can’t force preschoolers to “learn”, we use games, art, music, centers, books

and some “directed” lessons. Even snack can be part of the lesson. The kids will tell you they are playing, and they are. But they are also learning. There are a lot of studies that show that kids who have been in preschool do better in “big school”.

We want to welcome Peggy Mass to our staff. She works early mornings before she goes

off to her other job at Lanskys. Jocelyn Gibler is off to her senior year of high school, but we hope her schedule will allow her to work vacations and fill in when needed. Jocelyn used her music talent at the center this summer and even taught the kids some Spanish.

We always have people to thank for volunteering. We thank Steve Hultman who comes

around occasionally to work on the yard, more now that he is retired. And Marvin Collins is our Mr. Fix-it. It seems there is nothing he can’t fix. And Alex and Ethan Brewer have been at the center many days this summer helping out. Members of the community often donate items to us, art supplies or toys their kids have outgrown, etc. We appreciate you thinking of us.

Welcome Home & Congratulations! To Adam Miller who arrived home from Afghanistan just 15.5 hours before his first child Connor Hunter Dean Miller was born! Connor weighed in at 7 lbs. 7.2 ounces, Length 21 inches Congratulations, Adam & Ashley!

Can You Solve This Riddle?

You are driving in a car at a constant speed. On your left side is a ‘drop off’, (The ground is 18-20 inches below the level you are traveling on), and on your right side is a fire engine traveling at the same speed as you. In front of you is a galloping horse, which is the same size as your car and you cannot overtake it. Behind you is a galloping zebra. Both the horse and zebra are also traveling at the same speed as you. What must you do to safely get out of this highly dangerous situation? See back page for answer.

Intelligence for Your Life • Health number that will cheer you up. 24: Dr. Tom Seaburne is the co-author of the book Athletic Abs. It may seem unbelievable, but he says that just 24 crunches every other day will tone your stomach. Any more and you’re overworking the muscles and putting too much strain on your back. • Did you know: You should never feed your dog tomatoes. Tomatoes and tomato plants contain a substance that’s toxic to dogs and they can cause vomiting, diarrhea, tremors, even heart arrhythmias. The leaves, stems and unripe or green tomatoes have even higher concentrations. So keep your dog away from tomatoes altogether. • Repair your financial errors: Getting behind on student loans? Don’t shove the delinquent notices in a drawer. If you’re having trouble making payments, call the lender and ask for a deferment. That could give you an extra three years to catch up. • Did you know: Chalk can help prevent ants from invading your home. Just grab a stick and draw a thick line around points where ants might enter your home — like the base of the front door and kitchen windows. Ants are repelled by the calcium carbonate in chalk, and probably won’t cross the line.

Sheriff’s Report

Submitted by Chief Deputy, James Matthai.

On 06-20-11 at approximately 6:48 AM Deputy Steffens was dispatched to the 15000 block of Lime Kiln Road in reference to a theft of copper wire. There were cameras in place and the investigation is continuing. See above. During the month of June our office received several complaints of dump trucks speeding on Lime Kiln Road. Our office did run radar in the complaint areas. Our office also contacted DOT and advised them of the problems. On 07-24-11 Deputy Steffens was dispatched to the 1100 block of Old Lincoln Highway for a criminal mischief report. Upon arrival Deputy Steffens was advised of several padlocks being cut off storage units. At the time of this report there were no items reported stolen. On 07-25-11 Deputy Wilson was dispatched to the 20000 block of Monument Road for a theft report. Upon arrival Deputy Wilson was advised that a red 2004 Chevy Truck was stolen from the property. The vehicle was the only item reported missing.

A Terabyte is approximately one trillion bytes, or 1,000 Gigabytes. To put it in some perspective, a Terabyte could hold about 300 hours of good quality video or 1,000 copies of the Encyclopedia Britannica. Tabasco sauce is made by fermenting vinegar with hot peppers in a French oak barrel, which has three inches of salt on top and is aged for three years until all the salt is defused through the barrel. In film-editing lingo, R2-D2–the robot in Star Wars—means Reel 2, Dialogue 2. A four-year-old child asks an average of 437 questions a day. In February 1964, evangelist Billy Graham broke his life-long rule against watching television on Sunday—to see the Beatles first appearance on American Television.
