How Your High Schooler Can Save for College

(Even During the School Year!) So, your kids are in high school. Honestly, you’re already crushing it as a parent, especially if you still have your sanity! Before you celebrate too hard, though, there’s one more thing to think about—college. If you’re like most parents, the idea of paying for your kids’ college gives you nightmares. Let’s be real, we’re in the middle of a pretty scary student loan crisis right now. But the truth is, it’s not your job to fund your child’s degree. You’re there to help them out along the way, but they have skin in the game, too. With that in mind, here are five things they can do while they’re still in high school to help them save up and go to college without student loans (yep, it is possible). These steps shouldn’t just happen during summer vacation, either. They can do this stuff all through the school year.

Avoid debt— no matter what Teach your high schooler that debt should never be an option—for anything! Encourage them to stay away from car payments (they can find a used car in their price range), teach them to use cash or a debit card instead of credit cards, and most importantly, forget about taking out loans to pay for college! Bonus tip: If their school offers a personal finance class, tell them to sign up!

Have a savings account Any extra money they have, after budgeting for monthly expenses like gas, clothes, and maybe some fun every once in a while, should go straight into savings!

Work a part-time job If their schedule allows, working 20 hours per week can actually be healthy for high schoolers. Not only does it help them stack up cash for college, it preps them for the college or technical school search process by teaching them leadership and responsibility— plus, resume-building and interview skills. Colleges look at that stuff when they’re considering students for merit-based scholarships.

TEST HIS RESOLVE Dear Dave, Our son is 27, and he has a good job making $55,000 a year. Recently, we learned he financed an expensive car he’s now upside down on. In addition, he has accumulated over $15,000 in credit card debt. He lives in a small town, and only pays $650 a month in rent, but he is asking for money. We taught him about living on a budget and staying out of debt when he was younger, and now it seems he didn’t listen very well. How do you think we should handle this situation? Bryce Dear Bryce, The first thing I’d advise telling him is that you and his mom aren’t going to whip out the checkbook, and make his problems disappear. That may sound harsh, but he had a really good thing going until he messed it up by acting impulsively and irresponsibly with his finances. Nope, I wouldn’t take care of it for him—not at his age. This young man needs to have some skin in the game. I’d tell him to sell the fancy car, and get something way cheaper to drive for a while. I’m talking about a little beater in the $2,000 to $3,000 range. It sounds like he’ll have to get a small loan to cover the difference, but a little car debt is better than a lot of car debt. I’d also advise him to pick up a part-time job nights or weekends until he gets that credit card debt paid off. In other words, let him wallow in it and worry about things for a while. Then, if he’s willing to accept responsibility for his actions, and starts handling money more wisely, you two might help out every so often with a little extra cash on the payments. But I’d test his resolve first. And I’d want to see proof he has learned from his mistakes! —Dave

wIgIn tEEnFiSNdDoNsDe Everyone looks forward to the winter holidays, but between planning your Hanukkah party and buying plane tickets to gather with distant relatives for Thanksgiving you may notice your wallet feeling a little light. Never fear, there is one way to keep your bank account prospering throughout the holiday months: A Seasonal Job. Companies all over Houston are prepping for the surge of business in the coming months and their current staff simply won't be enough to handle it. In 2018 Target hired 120,000 seasonal employees starting at $12 per hour! Retail stores aren't the only industry prepping for the holiday season. Restaurants, hotels, event planners, online retailers, delivery services, transportation, and others are all gearing up to hire thousands of new employees to keep things moving smoothly. Even construction projects are picking up this time of year, now that the Houston heat is lifting. With all those opportunities out there these next few months are a great chance to try a new industry, make a little side money, or pay rent while looking for your dream job!

GiIn aNe cMpNyAEs-rN Look at a seasonal job like an internship: you will have access to the inside workings of a company for a set time, and have the chance to find out what you like and what you hate about it without any risk! Love the job? Try to turn it into a full-time position at the company. Hate the job? Just keep your head down and count down the days until the season ends and you can say goodbye. When working there, look out for indications about the company's future. Are they expanding? If so they might have room for some new full-time employees in the future, and a well placed word can put you on the short list. But before you even get that far you have the opportunity to hear about the job first-hand! We have all combed through company reviews and salary estimates for the jobs we want, but working side-by-side with people who do what you hope to be doing is the perfect chance to get honest opinions. Ask full-time employees about their jobs and listen to the way they describe them. • • • •

Do they like it here? Do they complain about the pay or the hours? How to projects get divvied out? What is management really like?

If you just graduated from college or high school and don't have any work experience, a seasonal job is an excellent chance to make a paycheck while building up your resume for future positions. Already an established worker but unhappy in your industry? A seasonal job is a low risk way to get a taste of a new job and get your foot in the door for other opportunities down the line. If you are looking to switch industries, try to get a position at a well-known company in your desired field. Even though the work you may do is temporary, it will look nice on your resume when you apply to other jobs afterward. For instance, if you are interested in operations or logistics, a seasonal job at Amazon or Apple will stand out on a resume even if your actual position was pretty generic. If you want to be working in customer service, try going for a big retailer with a reputation for making guests feel appreciated.

These are all questions most candidates would love to get nononsense responses to. Knowing the answers could radically change your opinion of not just the company but the whole industry. If you end up loving the company and want to work there fulltime after your seasonal position is done, you have a foot in the door. Make sure to work hard and show professionalism, your supervisors will notice and that will give you an advantage when applying to openings near the end of your tenure or after. If you really want to cinch your chances, don't hesitate to mention your intention to stay with the company. If you interact frequently with your hiring manager while on the job it is perfectly professional to pull them aside at some point and tell them that you really enjoy working for the company and want to stay on after the season. They may not be able to promise anything but your enthusiasm will stick in their mind.

If your main priority in taking a seasonal position is to gain new skills, perhaps you would be better served enrolling in a community college class or applying for an apprenticeship. The brave workers who fought for the 40 hour work week had a phrase:

Now, at the time the standard workday was 10-16. If that sounds insane to you it is probably a good idea to reconsider taking on that second job. There are 168 hours in a week, and a full-time job will take up 40 of that. Take out the 8 hours a day we all need to sleep and you are left with 72 hours. That is about 5 hours of free time on workdays and 2 weekend days. Add in a measly 20 hour part-time seasonal position: now you are down to 52 hours of free time in your week. Some of that will be spent on eating, showering and commuting to each job.

Because your employer knows you may only be around for a few months, they won't necessarily feel the need to get you the best training for the job. Companies don't want to spend a lot of money training an employee that they won't get much time out of. This means the positions open for seasonal work are often less technical and less important than the full-time positions. This isn't much of a problem if you are just looking for some spare cash for the holidays and don't mind doing boring or

Think carefully about how much time you will have left to recharge mentally before your next shift. What household chores do you complete on the weekend? Will you still have time to take your kid to soccer practice or binge watch the new season of Stranger Things? How important is having a little time to yourself every day. These are the kinds of things to consider before taking on that side job.

Full-time employee benefits (health insurance, retirement) will definitely not be offered in seasonal roles, and other perks (company discounts, company outings) may also not apply. For a short-term gig, that might be fine, but if these perks and benefits are important to you, ask your employer about them before signing on the dotted line. Which is not to say a seasonal job isn't worth the sacrifice. If you have the time and the energy. That first week with two paychecks can feel like heaven. If you aren't currently employed a seasonal position can keep you afloat while you search for a full-time position. They are a great way to get a glimpse into a new industry or open opportunities to a company you have your eye on.

Weigh all the options Your high schooler might be worried about getting into their dream school, but here’s some real talk: Their only “dream school” should be the one they can go to debt-free. This might mean going to a public, in-state school instead of a private university, starting at community college and transferring later, or even checking out a two-year trade school. Make sure you guys talk through all the options together, so they know you have their backs when it comes to making smart choices.

Start applying for scholarships It’s never too early to start applying for scholarships and grants, and they really can make a difference in being able to pay for school. Encourage your teen to apply for as many as possible during the school year. I always tell kids to spend at least one hour per day applying for scholarships. Seriously, they could earn thousands of dollars in just part of the time they normally spend scrolling through Instagram! And if you have a high school senior, help them fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Be sure to stay up to date on any financial aid award letters they receive to make sure they’re not being offered a loan—it can happen!
