b rBi rAn Jane had been working part-time in her own business but she wasn’t earning much money for all the hours she worked as a videographer. She knew that she needed a new career path. That meant getting fresh training if she was going to land a new job, one that would pay well, and provide her with medical insurance from. She elected to go to the community college and take a program on technology involving servers and networking and obtain some Cisco certifications in the process. Sounds like a great plan because many employers are looking for new technology people and they are quite hard to find in today’s marketplace. The only problem was Jane is 63 years old. She said she plans to work for another 10 years. That may sound okay, but in the tech world, many companies are trying to eliminate older workers whereas she’s trying to break into that field. A friend referred her to me and we met for a career counseling session to discuss her job search and specifically review her answers to interview questions. Ag dScImNaIo aTe  Age discrimination is certainly alive and well and living in America. And no place is it more prevalent than in the technology industry. Many of the Fortune 500 companies and larger tech organizations have worked hard to eliminate older workers by encouraging them to retire. Either they would retire voluntarily or be pushed out (read my column "How Workers Can Overcome Layoff In Light Of The IBM Age Discrimination Lawsuit"). Since there was no way to hide her age when she got to the job interview, I advised her to deal with it in the very opening question if possible. It’s common for many employers to start out with the question, Tell me about yourself. With this question, I suggested that Jane bring up the fact that she was a mature worker. Talk about the advantages that her age offers, such as a strong work ethic, her excellent communication skills between technical and non-technical people, and her ability to meet tight deadlines. Also, she should mention the fact that she’s done exceptionally well in her high tech training program where she’s been Cisco certified. To craft a good answer to the open question she needed to get the information out there right away. We both knew they may not mention her age but they sure were thinking about it. We feared that they were thinking that this woman is too old to be hired for their tech job. FiDMpOyRsWh hReMaUr wRkRs We talked about the kind of employers that might be more receptive to hiring her in the IT area. We talked about city, state, county, and federal government positions. She has a strong interest in working at a hospital so we put that on the top of the list. I suggested she could also add medical clinics and large insurance companies such as Blue Cross or Blue Shield. The companies we didn’t put on her list are all the magnet tech ones that young people want to apply for, like Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, or the IPO’s

My husband and I are on Baby Step 4 of your plan, so what would you think about us borrowing that amount from our emergency fund? I’ve got a couple of friends who were advised by their financial planners not to open college savings accounts for their kids. Their planners told them this would count against their children’s ability to receive financial aid and assistance when it’s time for college. Apparently, these planners told them to put the money into their own retirement accounts. It’s my understanding, however, that both the child’s and the parent’s financial situations are looked into when determining financial aid. Can you please shed some light on this?

I don’t know the exact course you’re talking about, but I do know something about the concept of buying and selling stocks, or day trading, if you want to call it that. I can tell you all the research shows 78 to 84 percent of day traders lose money. And one hundred percent think they won’t be the ones losing out. That includes people who take courses like the one you mentioned.

I have found no data points which show, on a consistent level across a broad population, that people who take a course like that become wealthy as a result. Buying and selling single stocks is an ultra-highrisk proposition. That’s why I don’t buy any single stocks. Now, I know some people who buy and sell single stocks as a very small percentage of their financial world. It’s almost like a hobby for them. A couple might actually make a little money from time to time, but it’s not the main focus of their investment strategy. To hear them, it’s like listening to fishing stories. They’re always talking about the one that got away.

So, if a financial planner told you not to get a job because then you can apply for welfare, are you going to listen to that person? What kind of moron gives financial advice like this? You don’t tell people not to save money for something, just so they can pretend they’re poor! Save whatever money you can, and send your kid to school. Why is that such a difficult concept to grasp? People need to stop looking for tricks and shortcuts, because there aren’t any that will be beneficial in the long run. I’m not going to pose as broke— fraudulently—to get financial aid for my kid. That’s ridiculous! I hope I wasn’t unclear. —Dave

Instead, I directed her to look at large organizations that might need her skills and that weren’t as popular with younger applicants. This included utilities and energy companies. PrPaEAvYNsEr t tENtRvEwQuStOn We role-played and worked on good answers to the tough questions she’d likely be asked. Jane needed to convince the employer she would be a very good applicant and that she was going to stay long enough that it’s worth it for them to train her. Jane plans to work 10 years but even if she only ends up working six or seven years that is still long enough for an employer to be satisfied, considering most millennials leave within 2-3 years. It is not very effective to say I only plan on working a few years and then I’m going to leave. So one of the answers we crafted was to a typical question, where do you see yourself five years from now? This is how Jane was coached to answer. “I plan to work hard to advance my technical skills on the job. I know that I want to continue to learn and be valuable to my company. But as to what I can do five years from now that’s going to depend on the training I received and also on the fact that I’m continuously learning. So many new jobs haven’t even been thought of yet, nor have they even been invented, so I try to keep my eye on where the company needs to be going and make sure that I’m working towards that goal. I know that I’ll be making a major contribution because I’m a very hard worker.” Another key question we covered was why should I hire you? This gives Jane the chance to use the technique I call the "60 Second Sell." Some of you may think of it as an elevator speech but it is so much more than that. It’s really your personal branding and brings forth the top five selling points that you have for that particular job. Here’s how we decided that Jane should answer the question. “For the last two years I’ve been working on a high-tech associate degree and Cisco certifications I think that along with my technical skills, I have excellent communication skills and those skills allow me to work with people that are technical as well as those that are not technical. I have my own business doing videography and that taught me the importance of meeting deadlines and customer service. I’m very good at technical troubleshooting and problem solving and when you’re dealing with tech issues there’s a lot of problem-solving that needs to take place. Finally, I bring a very strong work ethic. I know the importance of being on the job every day and putting in any extra time necessary to get the work done. You could count on me to be a very reliable, and excellent employee.” MoEIp Lastly, I advised Jane to write out answers to typical questions that she might get asked and practice saying the answers. We talked about creating stories of her past work experience whether they were at school, in her part-time job or volunteer work. Stories of past work performance always are influential and they should be used in answers whenever possible. Jane’s now ready to face employers. She’s convinced that she will be able to get a great job and I think she definitely will. She has found the right way to overcome her age and make herself appealing to a hiring manager and company. Ever thought about work on an oil rig? As of March 2019 there were 1,016 active rigs off the coasts of Texas and Louisiana. Oil production from US federal waters in the Gulf of Mexico reached an all-time annual high of 1.65 million barrels per day in 2017.According to the Energy Information Administration, "Gulf of Mexico federal offshore oil production accounts for 17% of total U.S. crude oil production and federal offshore natural gas production in the Gulf accounts for 5% of total U.S. dry production." That is a lot of rigs that need workers, and with employment as low as it is there aren't enough workers to go around. That makes candidates willing to learn the skills a valuable commodity. But what kind of positions are available on an oil rig?

RoStBoT$2,0 - $3,0 pREa The most entry-level position on the rig is the roustabout. Roustabouts are responsible for cleaning tools, equipment, including drills, pumps, and machinery, and keeping their work areas clean and orderly. Roustabouts also use lifts to clear pipes and debris and to load and unload materials and equipment.

RoGhEc $6,0+ pREa After as little as six months as a roustabout you may advance to being a roughneck. The work is hard, with twelve hour days and sometimes even a full day of work on a project. Not everyone is

suited to this kind of work, and as such it is often in high demand. A oil rig roughneck is to be proficient when performing integral tasks like adding new pipe-lengths as the drilling goes deeper and deeper, as well as maintaining and cleaning the drill equipment and working in the mudroom.

Oi rGUmEr- $2Pe hUr An oil rig pumper monitors the extraction of oil on a computer monitor to ensure the correct level of pressure, density and rate are maintained. Potential or actual pipe blockages need to be noticed quickly before equipment is damaged or broken. Pumpers are often required to adjust the pipe settings or injection equipment to ensure the correct levels are maintained safely. A high school diploma and good communication skills are often all that is required for an entry-level oil rig pumper position. VOL. 24 ISSUE 1196

If you are afraid of heights the job of derrikhand is not for you. A derrikhand is responsible for the handling of drilling string in the uppermost section of the rig. This process is called "tripping" and requires frequent bits to be replaced or broken equipment to be retrieved from the hole. Derrikhands spend about a forth of their time on the "monkey board," a platform located up in the derrik of the rig.

Almost nothing goes on or comes off of a rig without the crane operator lifting it. Pipes, drilling fluid, food, safety equipment, and even personnel are picked up and placed on deck by the crane. The delicate nature of some cargo, as well as the fact that all movement of loads must keep in mind the tight space and movement from waves and wind, means the crane operator must be very skilled at planning and very careful when working.

Oi dIlEr$1- $2Pe hUr Most oil rigs have two or three crews on rotation that consist of different positions and job requirements. The oil driller supervises these crews and is themselves supervised by the toolpusher or rig manager. Along with supervising the crew a driller also operates the drilling and hoisting equipment on the rig, manages the rig floor, and operates the driller's console with monitors, brakes, throttles, clutches, and a lot of guages. An oil driller may be required to hold some company mandated certifications, and may through training and further certification grow into higher paying jobs over time.

ToLpShR/Ri mNaEr$5,0 - $1,0+ pREa A toolpusher, often referred to only as pusher, serves as a drilling crew’s foreman at an oil rig or at any other extraction site. Given their supervisory role, the toolpusher holds responsibility for the drillers, but is tasked with performing mainly administrative procedures like ordering and maintaining the equipment and material base. The toolpusher will be responsible for the scheduling of crew member's shifts and rotations as well as ensuring that all health and safety regulations are being followed. The toolpusher is often responsibele for the hiring and firing of crew members as well, and managing emergencies on board. A toolpusher is an experienced position, though not one that requires a lot of formal education. Toolpushers usually start as a crew member with only a high school diploma or minor degree, and work their way up the ranks.

MoOrAn- $2+ pROu On a rig there is the safety of the crew - and a lot of money - riding on the engines. The position of motorman is responsible for the maintenance and fixing of the engines, as well as sometimes taking on other duties like training roustabouts and roughnecks and assisting other crew members as needed. Mechanical knowledge is a must to a motorman, and many motormen are former roustabouts or roughnecks who had a knack for machinery and wanted got promoted. Most rigs require motormen to have first-aid experience.

A crane operator usually begins their career as a roustabout. They can then complete the required on-board certification, move up to assistant crane operator and eventually operate the crane with an assistant of their own.

Oi rGUdOgEr$4,0-$6,0 pREa Also known as a logging geologist or a mudlogging technian, an oil rig mudlogger is responsible for determining hydrocarbon positions with respect do depth, identifying downhole lithology, monitoring natural gas entering the drilling mud stream and drawing well logs for the purposes of oil company geologists. A mudlogger will analyze rock samples brought to the surface of the mud at the drilling site. They then will organize the data into a graphic log to be given to the drilling team. This position requires precision and accuracy, as a mistake could cost the company millions in damage or loss. Becoming a Mudlogger requires a college degree in a related subject (usually Geology) or equivalent experience, a strong knowledge of MSDS (Materials Safety Data Sheets) in order to safely deal with hazardous materials, and basic computer skills.

OfShReOi rGLeTrCiN - $5,0 - $1,0 pREa Oil rig engines and motors have many complicated electrical systems that may need maintenance or repair. An offshore electrician may work on electrical distribution and transmission equipment as well as any on-board tools or equipment that has electrical issues. Rig Electrician training is highly specialized and may be offered as a certification at a training institute or through a degree program.

To get a job on a deepwater well you need things like underwater welding, drilling in deepwater, or other experience don't you? Even the electricians need experience on oil rigs. Not quite actually, there are jobs that you can get that pay top dollar and don't require experience or even training, although both may net you job a little faster. Roustabout work on the offshore rigs is currently picking up steam again. While there is a moratorium on offshore drilling, that doesn't include those wells that are not in deepwater. That means, that all wells in production now, as well as those underway, which are in under 500 feet of water are business as usual. There is roustabout work out there and it's waiting to pay you a good wage and excellent benefits. You may not need any experience at all to accept it and it's going to give you a foot in the door on the offshore oil rigs where you want to work.
