Should my husband and I combine our finances?
My husband and I are active duty military stationed outside Washington, D.C. We’re completely debt-free and have finished your entire Baby Steps plan, but last month our paid-for rental house in Florida burned down. It was empty at the time, so no one was hurt, and we got a check from the insurance company for $165,000. We both plan to serve another nine years, and we know we could be moved around during that time. We love that area in Florida, though, and want to go back there one day. Do you think we should use the money to buy another place and rent it out until we’re ready to retire from the military?
Jenny Dear Jenny, If you want a quality marriage, the answer is yes. If you want a high probably of building wealth, the answer is yes. I read an article the other day about how you shouldn’t rely on joint bank accounts in marriage, because half of all marriages end in divorce, and the woman needs to be independent of her husband financially, so she won’t get messed over if the marriage doesn’t last. That’s an absolute load of crap, and here’s why. How and where you spend your money is always a direct result of your value systems. Jesus said it this way, “For where your treasure is, your heart will be, also.” When you plan your finances together, and you’re sharing your hopes and dreams, you’re sharing your goals for the future. You’re reaching for those together. You each have a voice, you each have a vote, and no one loses their personal identity in this. So yes, married couples should combine their finances. They should combine their checking accounts and their decision making on finances. You’ll make better, smarter decisions that way, and it instills communication in a marriage. You know, when I first started teaching this stuff I didn’t realize that. I told couples to combine their finances, not from a relational standpoint, but because it’s impractical to run two sets of books in a household. But it’s very hard to hit the same goals and make good things happen together when you’re living separate financial lives. Since then, I’ve become convinced this approach builds stronger finances and stronger marriages. Marriage is grand, divorce is fifty-grand, and when you live separately you’re going to end up living…separately. Combine your finances.
Carrie Dear Carrie, Wow! I am so proud of you guys. You’re at the point where you’re living—and giving—like no one else. You have achieved financial peace! Now, I love real estate. But it’s always a good idea to have your rental property near you. I wouldn’t buy a place in Florida if I lived in Washington, D.C., and there was a chance I could be re-assigned pretty much anywhere in the world. I’d just scrape the lot where the rental house was, sell it, and invest that cash along with the insurance money. Long distance landlording is really tough. It’s stressful, and it adds an even bigger element of risk to the rental property equation. It’s not something I generally recommend. If it’s something you guys want to take a chance on, though, you’re certainly in the financial position to do it. Just remember to pay cash for the whole thing, and if possible, try to get a location where you’d both like to end up when your military careers are over. Congratulations, you two! HOW PARENTS CAN HELP A NEW GRAD GET A JOB You are proudly walking across the stage to receive your college diploma and the question everyone now asks, “So do you have a job yet?” Sadly the answer for many students is no. They may be thinking they need to go to graduate school simply because they haven’t found work yet. As Baby Boomer parents, you have invested a small fortune in helping your student earn that degree. But is there more a parent can do to help? Your student may need your assistance in landing a job. Do you know how to advise them to have a great online presence on LinkedIn? For that matter, do you have a superb presence yourself? Recruiters, hiring manager and HR personnel are on LinkedIn looking at job candidates every day. Ninety-four percent of recruiters spend hours on LinkedIn searching for talent. And they are trying to find top talent amongst these new graduates. They are often shocked at what they see. Photos of kids fresh off a party, in sexy outfits, looking sultry, in t-shirts, or worse yet a profile that is a skeleton with nearly nothing at all written there. These HR executives say a bad picture turns them off. Their advice: no wedding or fancy prom-like photo, forget the Mommy and me pictures, no graduation cap and gown shots, no sports photo, no modeling picture, no funny or looking hysterical pictures, nothing sexy and skip the gloomy or dark look. There are companies that check out a candidate’s LinkedIn profile before a job offer is extended.

As a Boomer parent myself whose son is a senior in college, I asked students at the University of Washington how they developed their LinkedIn profiles. The answers I heard were: “I looked at my friend’s and did what she did.” Another said, “My frat brother told me to get on LinkedIn and just put my resume stuff on it so I did that” and a third said, “I found some articles online and did what they said.” No one had gone to the career center for help. One brave student said, “I asked my Mom and she helped me.” A tech student mentioned he had looked at his dad’s LinkedIn and said: “I was embarrassed as it was pretty bad so I didn’t even bother to connect with him as he only had 49 connections.” Parents can most definitely help their son or daughter but first, you need to check and be sure your own profile is appealing. Do you have a completed, engaging LinkedIn profile yourself? Is it up to date? Do you have 500 connections? What about a great photo and a summary written in first-person that speaks to people? Do you have a background photo? If not, you may need to update your LinkedIn profile first and then help your new grad. The Baby Boomer Guide to LinkedIn article lays out exactly what you need to do. After you have perfected your own profile, then it’s time to help your son or daughter. Check their LinkedIn profile out. Is their online presence complete? Would it impress a recruiter? The best way to help your Grad improve their profile and get employers attention is to follow these five tips. 1. REVIEW FOR A PROFESSIONAL IMPRESSION. Make sure their photo looks very professional. It should be a headshot. Check out their background image to be sure they are not using the blue default one. They need to add a related image to ensure that is appropriate for their career goals. Even a city skyline or nature scene will work. Pretend you are a recruiter. Would you be impressed at first glance?

Next, read their summary and headline. Be sure it offers some skills and discusses the type of job they want. Students need to be specific as to the job they are looking for as “Business” is a very broad area, saying Event Planning or Social Media Marketing is more effective. 2. EXPLAIN HOW TO NETWORK. Students don’t like the idea of networking as it seems like they are using people. Yet the most successful new grads are excellent networkers. Teach them how this works, what to ask, and how to be respectful of others time. Help them on LinkedIn so they can find connections and reach out for meetings with them. Role-play a conversation with your Grad so they know what to ask. Always ask the most important questions first. Instruct them to follow-up on any leads. One parent reported she was embarrassed when she arranged a hiring manager to talk to her son and he never followed up to make the actual appointment. It was a lost opportunity that could have led to a job. Emphasize that when someone is asked to help and the student doesn’t ever follow through you both look bad. 3. SHARE CONNECTIONS. You know more people than they do. Look over your own LinkedIn connections to see who works at a company they are interested in or holds a job they want. Use your own connections and ask if you can introduce your son or daughter and then bow out. Let your student take it from there but caution them on not wasting connections. 4. Also, recommend that they write a customized cover letter with every job application. Cover Letters are influential and they impress employers. 5. CONSIDER PAYING FOR CAREER COUNSELING. Many new grads are lost and unsure about what they want to do once they graduate. They likely need professional guidance that they may not have gotten from the college they attended. A career counselor can help them define a career path, and a job title to look for. The counselor can write their resume and a cover letter for them. Most counselors can help them develop their LinkedIn profile. To find a career counselor, ask friends for referrals. Parents can offer much-needed assistance but then expect your New Grad to take the ball and run with it.
