My fiancé and I just started your class, but we’re having trouble getting our beginner emergency fund together. We both work fulltime, and I make $59,000 a year while he has worked in retail for several years and makes $22,000 to $25,000. I’m trying to manage a couple of side jobs, but we just can’t seem to get our budget to work in a way that will allow us to save anything. Can you help us?

I would get one advisor, and I wouldn’t invest all my mutual funds in one fund. Virtually all mutual fund advisors can sell pretty much any mutual fund, and you can buy an array of different mutual funds from different companies through one advisor. That gives you diversification. So, there’s really no advantage in having multiple advisors, unless you don’t trust someone’s advice. And if you don’t trust someone’s advice, why are you working with them in the first place?
Dear Adrienne, First of all, your finances should remain separate until you’re married. There’s shouldn’t be a “we” in terms of money at this point. You can always run a single budget that you both look at and prepare for after you’re married, but right now he shouldn’t be paying your bills and you shouldn’t be paying his bills.
I personally have one financial advisor, and I trust that person. Still, I ask lots of questions and make sure I understand everything that’s going on with my money and the investment before making a decision. Why are you recommending this? What is it about them you like? Show me the fund and how it compares to the S&P and other funds in the same category. If you approach it this way, and again, you have one advisor, it’s a learning process and you become a more educated investor. Plus, after a while you can create your own diversification. Never put money into something you don’t fully understand!
The biggest problem I see is that he’s making no money. He needs to get a better job. He can’t pay his bills, and in the process, he’s sucking you dry. I’m sure your fiancé is a good, hard-working man, but he needs to make a serious career shift soon—like now! In the meantime, this guy needs to take on a part-time job or two until he gets that career shifted. It’s not really a budgeting problem you’re looking at. It’s an income issue. —Dave

Military Veterans : What Job Networking Is and How To Use It

The concept of job networking is foreign to most military veterans' experience so they usually never use it even though they can get much better results seeking out personal contacts or employee referrals to help them get employed than spending hours applying for jobs online. This is understandable. After all, getting "hired" in the military is very different from seeking employment in the civilian world. To join the military, most prospective recruits go down to their local recruiting office for the service branch they are interested in and fill out some forms, take a few tests and they are "hired" after they pass a physical and sign the contract. It's a get-inline and wait-your-turn approach to obtaining employment and is quite different from job seeking in the civilian world. In the civilian world, successful job searching is really a relationship-building exercise. It may not seem like that for all the resume writing you initially do at the start of a job search or all the online job applications you complete in the hopes of scoring a job interview. But what every military job hunter discovers after a month or so into a job search campaign is that a good resume or applying to every job that exists in their occupational specialty rarely gets them a job offer. Why? Too many job applicants and too much job competition. Jobs that most early- to mid-career military veterans are qualified for can receive 100 to 500 job applicants. Remember, this big group of applicants is usually pruned down to 10 applicants who are job interviews. MAY onsite 17, 2019 32given
So, how does a military veteran use job networking during his job search campaign? The first thing to do is to turn off the computer, get out of the house, and start building relationships. You have to realize that people who know people know other people. Once a job seeking veteran starts circulating in the community and tells acquaintances, family and friends that they are looking for a job, they will get calls. I read a military blog a while ago and a veteran wrote that he went to a job fair and while waiting in line to see a recruiter, he handed out 300 business cards to every person who was standing in the same line. He received ten calls and was soon hired. When it comes to recruiters, they really prefer to meet you face to face if they can. Resumes can be misleading. Only when they see you can they make a solid judgment about your employment potential. Finally, companies prefer employee referrals and many times give the employee a cash payment if their referral turns out to be a viable job candidate who eventually gets hired. Job networking cannot guarantee you a job, however. I once worked with a young veteran who was a satellite communications expert with a top secret security clearance. His father-in-law who was an employee at a civilian employer referred the young veteran for a job. The human resources manager interviewed him and then told him he had to take an electronics test. The veteran called me and we spent time boning up on electronics so he could pass the test. In this case, job networking got his foot in the door, but he had to prove he was qualified for the job. He then told me he had been applying to Lockheed Martin for months and never got a response. I asked him if he knew anyone who worked for the company. Yes, my neighbor's wife is a Lockheed Martin human resources assistant, he said. I told him to walk his resume over to his neighbor and give it to her. He didn't have any job problems after that.

Challenges Facing Veterans m e h t e v l o s o t w o and h It doesn't matter if you are an American veteran or from one of our allied nations. We all seem to have the same issues that we have to deal with as a result of our service. Some veterans will have to deal with all of these issues. Others may only have to deal with one as is the case with finding a job or starting a business once one has completed his/her service. The key here to dealing with all of these issues is to develop programs that provide more personalized attention for veterans and actually work to solve the problem.
1. PTS, �PTSD�, Emotional Issues, &� Suicide Although there are many veterans who suffer from Post Traumatic Stress and other issues as the result of war, there are many who have traumas, like me, that go back to childhood. Regardless of what trauma or traumas the veteran suffered, it is necessary to develop a treatment plan that helps the veteran to get better. Key here is for the veteran to identify his/her individualized trauma history. Once the traumas have been identified, then the veteran must work through each trauma. This is almost impossible for many because the traumas are too painful to confront. To get past these, the focus needs to be on the feelings and emotions that resulted from the initial trauma. Expressing those feelings, whether to a trusted friend or counselor, or simply writing them down can help the veteran come to terms with those feelings and emotions. Understand that this takes time, and this is a simplified version of how to handle the situation. This is the first step in dealing with these issues and resolving them. There are many free resources available on the internet to help veterans with this VOL. 24 ISSUE 1192
issue. These include Patriot Outreach, a site that offers a mindfulness meditation to deal with Post Traumatic Stress.
2. Benefits & �Claims Benefits vary from country to country with various procedures for handling benefits and claims. Veteran status also varies from country to country, and so it is necessary to consult the respective government agency in your country to find out what is available. Solving the benefits and claims process requires a twopronged approach. The first step is reforming the appropriate government departments so that those veterans who need benefits can apply for, and receive them. The other part of this process is to create private resources to help veterans. There are many organizations in place that will help veterans to receive their benefits. For our allies, it may be necessary to develop benefits programs, particularly those who have had their veterans' status removed or weren't granted veterans' status because of non deployment.
3. Short Term Needs Short term needs include paying bills, rent and utilities. What I learned from being homeless is that veterans have to compete for the same resources available in their communities that are also offered to civilians. Veterans must meet the same qualifications as civilians in order to receive these benefits. Often veterans have different needs or needs that are more unique to their service, and community programs cannot meet these needs. Continued on page 52 MAY 17, 2019

Continued from page 51 Again, there are two ways to address this issue. The first is to develop programs through our governments to deal with these issues. Unfortunately, governments tend to produce one size fits all solutions to these problems. Developing private programs specifically for veterans can fill the gap and help veterans avoid having to compete for resources.
4. Homelessness Homelessness is a problem for veterans worldwide. Resolving this issue is often difficult and complicated because it is often tied to alcohol and drug abuse as well as Post Traumatic Stress and other mental health issues veterans may have. Having a criminal record may also prevent a veteran from finding affordable housing or a landlord who will accept a veteran with a criminal record. Solving this problem will require determining the root causes of the particular veteran's reason for being homeless and then developing a personalized plan to help the veteran resolve this issue. Although government programs may need to be developed, and may even already exist, the same one size fits all solution is still in place.

5. Jobs & Businesses Key to helping veterans overcome their problems is helping them find jobs or develop businesses that will help them have choices in every area of their lives. These options include healthcare, living conditions and overall wellbeing as well as supporting their families. Developing programs that help veterans develop new skills or build businesses will help them to achieve economic selfsufficiency. Understanding the current economy helps veterans identify opportunities available to them to find the right jobs and businesses. Creating options for veterans is at the core of any programs developed as each veteran has different needs. Identifying the issues veterans have problems with is easy. Solving those problems is much more difficult. A combination of both public and private organizations are needed to help veterans who need help to integrate back into society and access the resources they need. The more veterans who get involved in helping their fellow veterans, the faster these issues may be resolved.
