Are They Acceptable Yet? By Lindsey Jenkins You were 18 years old and that brand new skull-and-crossbones forearm tattoo looked great. Fast-forward ten years, you've received a degree and you're looking for a respectable, good-paying job. Will that skull-and-crossbones tattoo be the bane of your job search? Well, it all depends. The good news is, in today's world, the workplace has become a little more lenient when it comes to appearances as long as your performance is up to par. With so many creative, artistic-based work environments like design, and digital media, as well as the military, construction, and mechanical fields, tattoos may not prevent a job offer. Tattoos are a form of self-expression and some employers may even appreciate your taste in body modification. Though, if you are going into the medical field, education, government, law or business, it's best to keep your tats under wraps and show them off after work. Fortunately, some managers concentrate more on work ethic and productivity and not necessarily your choice of body modification but many still claim that visible tattoos can hurt your chances of getting a job. It's always best to play it safe and cover all visible tattoos during the interview process and even for the first few weeks of work, except if you're trying to get a job as a tattoo artist; in that case, you're a walking resumĂŠ!

There are no laws prohibiting discrimination against applicants with tattoos, but as soon as you start working for the company, the story changes. Bosses might consider the tattoos to be distracting to other employees and as a negative representation of the company. Cover what you can with clothing and any tattoos that can't be hidden under long-sleeves or pants, there is makeup specially formulated for tattoo cover-up. Maybe you haven't gotten a tattoo yet because you are worried about it hurting your employment chances later. Just be weary of the placement and content of your tattoo. A small flower tattoo on your back is not going to hurt your chances as much as a swastika on your forehead, obviously. Thankfully, there are a few options when it comes to full tattoo removal but they can be costly, painful and expensive. The most common way to remove a tattoo is by laser. The laser blasts apart the color pigment in the skin, allowing them to disperse. It can take several sessions depending on the size and color of the tattoo and can cost around $100 a session. All in all, a tattoo (or even a few) is not enough to kill your employment aspirations but you must be careful with where your tattoos are and what they represent. Tattoos are permanent representations of our attitudes, thoughts and dreams and they shouldn't and don't have to be the reason that you don't get the job of your dreams.

I work part-time, since we have young children, and I’ve been bringing home about $800 a month. Eight hundred dollars a month isn’t bad for a part-time job, but it’s not nearly enough to run a household—even one that’s debt-free—when there are kids in the picture. You should already be living on a little as possible in order to make the money in your emergency fund last as long as it can. It’s beans and rice time in your house. That means no restaurants, no vacations, and no movies. In other words, no spending on anything but bare necessities until your husband finds another good job, and you guys are back on your financial feet again. For middle and lower class Americans, work is life. Here in Houston it isn't uncommon to have a commute to and from work last an hour or more. Combine that with the low unemployment and you have lots of people picking up the slack in an understaffed work environment, and then spending what feels like an eternity in traffic. Young people entering the workforce are increasingly refusing to put up with the status quo. They know their value and they are leveraging it to change the workplace for the better. "I just want a better work-life balance than my parents had." says Lee, a 29 year old living in North Houston. He works from home 3 days a week and says he saves 3-4 hours a week that he used to spend sitting in traffic on I45. "I go in often enough to get face-to-face work done with my coworkers, but on my work-fromhome days I get much more done because no one is interrupting me." Advances in technology have paved the way for many companies to keep their employees happy and engaged, and might even help lessen the traffic for those who still have to be out and about. Workplaces are increasingly offering partial or completely remote work, and studies show it works for both employees and the company bottom line. It is still pretty rare for a company to offer remote work, but the numbers have gone steadily up as it becomes cheaper and more reliable. There are indications that flexible hours may become more common in the future. Some of the largest employers, including Walmart and Apple, have talked about shifting from the 'shareholders are all that matters' approach to a more balanced view that values the happiness of employees higher. And as more millennials climb the ladder and become bosses themselves, we see their demands as employees become the standard by which they lead. A few decades ago the responsibilities of childrearing was assumed to be entirely on the mother, and any career sacrifices that go along with it. Millennials are significantly more likely than their parents to consider caring for children to be the responsibility of all parents equally. That combined with the legalization of equal marriage

leading to more same-gender parents able to adopt, means that lots of men are now looking to accommodate children into their work schedule. Women have long had to work with their bosses assuming their career would halt the moment they had children, and the stigma attached to that assumption. But if more fathers and people who aren’t parents are asking for flexibility, the stigma could lessen. Younger people are also getting married (or not) later, and having children while very much invested in their work. They are less likely than previous generations to have a stay-at-home parent in the relationship who is willing to quit or move to part time for the years it takes to raise children, and with unemployment so low they feel confident demanding flexibility from their employers. "I am as much a parent as my wife, and she works just as hard at her job as I do," says Paul, a father from Baytown, "if she is always the one who has to take off to care for our sick kids or change her schedule to take them to school then I am contributing to workplace inequality." He and his wife have worked their schedules out with their employers so that they can alternate who takes the kids to school and who picks them up. More young parents are opting to share the load more equitably, and companies are catching up. More Houston companies offer gender-neutral parental leave in lieu of only maternal. “When younger workers talk about balance, what they are saying is, ‘I will work hard for you, but I also need a life,’” said Cali Williams Yost, the chief executive and founder of Flex Strategy Group, which helps organizations build flexible work cultures. “Unfortunately, what leaders hear is, ‘I want to work less.’” But employees say that when they work more flexible schedules they work MORE, not less, and that their work is more productive. "I'm saving 2 hours a week by not having a commute, so I don't mind answering my phone on Saturday once in a while," says Grey, who works in The Woodlands, "I'm

When Pew Research Center asked which work arrangement would be most helpful to people, young people were more likely than older people to say the flexibility to choose when they worked. Of people 18 to 29, men were more likely than women to say it, and people without children at home were as likely as parents to say it. In a survey of 11,000 workers and 6,500 business leaders by Harvard Business School and Boston Consulting Group, the vast majority said that among the new developments most urgently affecting their businesses were employees’ expectations for flexible, autonomous work; better work-life balance; and remote working. (Just 30 percent, though, said their businesses were prepared.) Technology has made all the difference in the last decade of change. We all remember the early days of Skype when it was a gamble on every message making it to the destination and any calls made over wifi were majority static. Young workers grew up in a world where anyone, anywhere was reachable. Young people are also more concerned with the environment than their predecessors. They shun commutes for the time and annoyance, but also because they feel guilty driving polluting cars back and forth in traffic every day.

"I would love to ride public transit, but Metro doesn't have a stop close to my apartment." says Salem, who works in Katy. Salem's employer doesn't offer remote work or flexible hours, so he is looking for a new job. Many young workers watched their parents or the parents of their friends get laid off or lose savings and benefits through the Great Recession. They saw how quickly a company will drop employees in a crisis. They do not expect a lifetime of loyalty from a company, and in return they feel no loyalty to a company that treats them badly. Few people want to work long, inflexible hours, yet many either work them anyway or sneak out without asking for permission, research shows. Millennials are simply asking for the flexibility upfront, instead of trying to wiggle out of undesirable situations after the fact. Whether for better or worse, the last twenty years have seen an incredible change in the way we participate in the workplace, and Millennials have had an significant effect on these changes.
