How to Help Your Teens Reach Their Goals in 2020 By Anthony ONeal

I don’t know about y’all, but I am ready to crush some goals this year! Maybe you don’t feel so ready, and that’s okay. Maybe you’re ready, but you’re worried your high schooler isn’t. Don’t stress. No matter where you find yourself at the beginning of the year, it’s never too late to get on track and set yourself (and your teen) up for success. The most important thing you and your teen need to do is: Have. A. Plan. Here’s how I break down the goal-setting process in a way that not only helps me plan for the whole year, but also helps me create positive change in myself that lasts way after I’ve hit my goals.

The Vision

Before there can be a goal, there has to be a big-picture vision. Encourage your teen to think about what kind of person they want to become and what they want to achieve as they learn and grow in their lifetime. Thinking through these things will give your teen the why behind their goals. Their why will really keep them motivated!

The Goals

Goals are what we set in order to help us work toward the vision. All goals should be SMART: Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant and Time-sensitive. For example, “save money for college” is vague, but “save $1,000 by graduation” is specific. It’s driven by a deadline and makes sense for your teen.

The Habits

Help your teen build some smaller, consistent habits that help them achieve their goals. A habit for the example above could be setting aside a certain amount of money from each paycheck. That way, once they reach their goal, they’ve already formed a pattern that will help them stick with their smart choices over time. Boom! Now it’s time to start putting the goal-setting process into action! If you have a student in the family, chances are that college––or at least thinking about college––is somewhere in their near future. If they’re interested in going to college (without student loans), here are a few examples of goals they could set for this year that will help them get ready for that big step.

I’m trying very hard to get out of debt. I have my beginner emergency fund in place, and I’m living on a monthly budget. Is it okay to include a little wallet cash in my budget at this point, just in case?

Do you think I should stop making contributions to my 401(k) for a year, so I can save up an emergency fund? I’m 28, and debt-free, but I don’t have anything saved for emergencies.

It’s probably not going to throw you off too much in terms of getting out of debt if you budget $20 or so, just to have some cash in your wallet. I wouldn’t recommend much more than that, though. The idea of having $50, $100, or $200 in walking around money is pretty selfdefeating when you’re supposedly saving, budgeting, and working hard to get out of debt.

If you’re debt-free and making decent money at your job, it shouldn’t take a whole year to set aside an emergency fund. Just make it a priority in your monthly budget. And yes, my advice to you is temporarily stop making contributions to your 401(k) until you have a fully-funded emergency fund of three to six months of expenses.

What really matters is the amount of pocket money you allow yourself to have. Think of it as a safety valve. Sometimes things come up in the course of day-to-day life that are just necessary, unexpected expenses—but not emergencies. Just designate a small amount of cash for it as part of your regular, monthly budget, and stick to that amount! —Dave

I recommend people stop investing, or wait to start investing, until they are debt-free except for their home and have a fully-funded emergency fund in place. In some cases, depending on how much debt they have, it can take two or three years to do all this. I know that seems like a long time, but in the grand scheme of things it’s really not. If you don’t have an emergency fund, but you’re contributing to a 401(k), there’s a good chance you’ll end up cashing out your 401(k) if a large, unexpected expense comes along. Then, when you cash out a 401(k) early, you get hit with a penalty plus your tax rate. That’s not a wise plan! —Dave

“What is your greatest weakness?” I was teaching a recent job search seminar when an engineer blurted out loudly, “That is a really stupid question.” Regardless, many employers learn a lot by asking this question. I always tell managers attending my seminar on hiring to ask this question because many times the job candidate gives them evidence of how they cannot do the job. Recently at a seminar with senior executives, a CFO related this story: “I was hiring for a staff accountant position. When I asked the guy to tell me his weaknesses he said, ‘Well, sometimes I get the 3 and the 8 mixed up, but it all seems to come out okay in the end.’ The 3 and the 8—we are in finance!” he exclaimed, emphasizing his exasperation with this confession. I repeat this example because this question causes many people to make a serious error and bare their souls or “come clean,” as this applicant did. By Ken Sundheim Skimming employment and job seeking articles on the web, I came across the quintessential, "It's About Who You Know," article. This thought process is a give up, stop working and accept your status methodology. Moreover, this type of thinking is not only unhealthy, it breeds jealously towards those who are successful in their career. In business unless you can make somebody money, they don't care if you're the son or daughter of royalty. Do you ever hear of the Google CEO hiring his cousin? This is nepotism at its best and the shareholders would have his neck, not to mention his job. Even if the executive were to find his cousin a job at another firm, he or she would have to work five times as hard in order to be accepted by his or her coworkers. This is why honest, smart business executives shy away from hiring those they know because typically it ends up in a disaster and can ruin relationships, not to mention businesses. Therefore, if relying on someone else does not work, how do you, the job seeker, get to where you want to be in your career? The answer is simple. Start subscribing to the attitude that it is who knows you and what can you do for them instead of the "it's who you know" frame of mind. Here are 3 ways to get the people whom you want to recognize you to offer you the positions you want and the salary you deserve.

If you want people to recognize you (which is the only way to achieve what you set out to), write a solid LinkedIn profile with a flattering picture, begin getting articles published (you can start on EzineArticles) and start a blog with your work. Speaking of blogs, if you have a personal blog - be it about cooking, childrearing, your favorite books, or whatever else - either totally isolate it from your professional self online, or go back and read your archives with the eye of a prospective employer. Anything you wouldn't want to read about an employee yourself, delete. What you put in writing on the Internet is always available somewhere, but you can at least take basic steps to be reasonably sure of a professional online persona. In the end, you want people who Google your name to find positive information about yourself and the best way to do so is to begin writing. Nearly 100% of job seekers whom I come across have not thought about this route, but next time you write about hedge fund marketing, the right person may read the article.

The best way to get recognition for your work and become the "person to know" is to find a job you love and begin that position with the mindset that you are going to fight hard enough to become the best at what you do. Start working 10 - 12 hour days, keep a stiff upper lip and people will notice you in any town you wish from New York City to Anchorage, Alaska.

An answer that I always used was, “Chocolate—I have a definite weakness for chocolate!” Ha, ha, ha, joke, joke, joke. A little humor in the interview is definitely okay. And often we would move on to the next question. But if the interviewer came back and said, “No, now really, what is your greatest weakness?” I might say: “Well, you know, I can be pretty type A when I’m working on a project. I just get so absorbed, I forget to look at the time. Before I know it, the time to leave has long gone by and I’m still there. I guess that’s a weakness. I guess I should realize that you should be able to leave right at five. But when I’m working on a project and I’m being creative, and things are rolling, I just stay on until I can get it done.” Here a weakness or fault has been turned into a positive, appealing trait. Try to choose something that’s not going to hurt your chances of getting hired. A better answer for our accountant might have been to say, “I have excellent computer user skills. I know Excel inside and out, but I am pretty weak at actual programming and would need more training if I were needed to write code for your software programs.” No one’s asking him to create enhanced software, and his answer actually reinforces his major selling point— his computer skills. Another approach to this question is to discuss a skill you were weak in and then add how you’d taken a class, get a coach or mentor and worked on mastering this skill and now it’s something you do quite well. With advance thought you can choose something similar that will have no negative impact on the hiring decision. Other acceptable responses include admitting you are a workaholic, that you are a perfectionist but only expecting perfection from yourself not others, or that you get impatient with your own performance and sometimes are too hard on yourself if you make a mistake.
