How Do I Show Them the Real Me? Everyone has hobbies and interests unrelated to the office, but how to bring them up in the interview? Sometimes you will get lucky and the interviewer will ask about what you do for fun, but more likely they will be looking for information in the regular base questions every interview includes. When interviewing for a position, it is important to keep in mind the thoughts and feelings of the person on the other side of the desk. While you are concerned with getting hired, the interviewer is focused on ensuring they find the right person for the job.
Why Can't They Just Refer to My Resume? Finding the ideal employee is hard work. If they could grab any old person off the street they wouldn't bother interviewing at all. If you have submitted a cover letter, resume, and maybe even a portfolio, you may feel like interviewing is a waste of time. They should already know you will do a great job, right? But the most important factor in whether or not a new hire succeeds - and sticks around - is how well they fit in with the office culture. Most of us have had a job we just didn't jive with, regardless of the actual duties. The interviewer is trying to suss out which of the applicants they will enjoy working with, and which will enjoy working with them. With that in mind, make that part of their job easy! Interviewers get lied to about everything under the sun, and they are tired of it. If you can not only show them how fun and interesting you are, but also let them see the real you, they will find your honesty refreshing.

As you prepare responses to the most common interview questions take a moment to find a way to include something unique to you. Examples:
"Why do you want to work for ABC Company?" "While looking through information on ABC I saw that you partner with a charity that helps dogs find homes. I have 3 dachshunds I adopted through a similar charity. I am excited to work for a company that cares about the homeless pet community."
"What is your ideal work environment?" "I am a very social person, so I thrive in an open office where I can interact with my coworkers regularly." Even if it feels like you are stretching the boundaries of the question, don't worry about it. As long as you include tie the information about yourself into the potential position or company it shouldn't be a problem. THERE’S NO MAGIC PILL Dear Dave, My wife and I made a resolution this year to pay off $20,000 in credit card debt we’ve accumulated. I want us to follow your plan, and live on a really tight budget. She wants us to use a debt consolidation company, like some of her friends have done. I’m really against her idea, but how can I change her mind? Blake Dear Blake, I’m glad you two have made the decision to get out of debt, and gain control of your finances. When it comes to this sort of thing, it’s wise to remember there’s no magic pill. No debt consolidation company is going to get you out of debt and help you stay out of debt. The answer is learning how to control yourself and your behavior with money. Using a debt consolidation company seems appealing, because there’s usually a lower monthly payment or lower interest rate attached. The problem in most cases, however, is the lower payment or interest rate exists only because the term is extended. You might pay a little less each month, but you end up staying in debt longer. There are other problems involved in using debt consolidation companies, too. For one thing, it can trash your credit for a long time when it comes to buying a car or a house. For these reasons I sometimes refer to it as a CON-solidation, because the whole thing is basically a con. They make you think you’re really doing something about your debt problem, but the debt—and all the bad habits that caused it—are still there.

My guess is your wife’s friends think using a debt consolidation company is an easy, harmless way to get out of a financial mess. But sometimes you’ve got to be an adult, admit the mistakes you’ve made, and do what it takes to straighten things out. This kind of thing isn’t a math issue. It’s a behavior issue. Making the decision to get out of debt and never go back there again, by living on a really tight budget and making sacrifices, is the best way to fix this mess and learn a lesson in the process. Live like no one else, so that later, you can live—and give—like no one else. Stay away from debt consolidation companies, Blake. Doing this the right way is worth it! —Dave

We all love a good New Year’s celebration, but with it comes the reminder of goals, responsibilities, and resolutions for the upcoming year. That’s what you can do when you make a plan for your money! You’ll give up on your resolution much more quickly without a plan. How do you start? First, figure out how much money you have to work with for the upcoming month—before the beginning of each month. This includes your income, your spouse’s income, and any extra income you may have. Give every dollar a name. Spend every dollar, on purpose, on paper, before the month begins. This is called a zero-based budget, and it works. People use creativity every day in all kinds of ways, whether posting on social media or developing a mobile app. For some people, creativity is an essential part of their work. “To be creative is the most exciting thing you can do,” says Chris Triola, owner of a textile design studio in Lansing, Michigan. “It’s as necessary to me as eating and breathing.” But making creativity your career typically requires hard work and perseverance. For workers who do it on their own, it also means learning how to market themselves and run a business. This article highlights selected occupations that involve creativity. It uses U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) data to show employment, projected openings, and wages for these occupations. And it points out how to get started in a creative career.
Occupations and outlook Most occupations involve some form of creativity. A salesperson, for example, might design a more engaging product pitch, and a physicist might devise a new way of understanding nature. In some occupations, creativity is an integral part of the job. Artists and related workers, designers, and media and communication workers, for example, all use creativity nearly every day.

The tables show, for selected occupations, employment and the percentage of self-employed workers in 2016; projected openings, on average, from 2016 to 2026; and median annual wages in 2017. Except for three of these occupations—craft artists, floral designers, and photographers—wages were above the $37,690 median for all workers. However, these wage data do not include self-employed workers, and the rate of selfemployment was higher in the occupations shown in the tables compared with 6 percent, the rate of self-employment in all occupations.
Artists and related workers Artists and related workers create aesthetic pieces that try to capture certain beliefs, feelings, or ideas. For example, a painter may try to express happiness through a watercolor landscape of a summer day. Workers in the occupations shown in table 1 typically develop a unique style, which helps to set them apart from others in their field.

Graphic designers is projected to have more than twice as many openings as any other occupation in this article. With a median annual wage of $67,420, fashion designers had the highest wage of the occupations in table 2.

Creative workers need technical skills relevant to their occupation, which may involve use of certain equipment. For example, a craft artist who specializes in woodworking needs to be able to make bevel and groove cuts with a saw and a chisel, among other tools. Communication skills are also important for creative workers. Having ideas is not enough; you must be able to share those ideas through writing or speaking. And for many people in creative occupations, business skills are pivotal to success—especially if you’re self-employed. The Small Business Administration and the nonprofit SCORE offer information for small business owners through free or lowcost resources and services, including workshops, networking events, and one-on-one mentorships. Education, training, and experience According to BLS, most creative occupations typically require a bachelor’s degree for workers to qualify at the entry level. And in about half of these occupations, workers receive on-the-job training to help them hone their craft. (See table 4.)

Getting an education can help you to build a solid technical and artistic foundation—and may improve employment prospects. Even in occupations that don’t typically require education in a formal program, creative workers usually benefit from hands-on learning. For example, you could start out as a hobbyist, then turn your passion into a career after discovering a market for your work. As table 4 also shows, most creative occupations don’t require work experience in a related occupation to qualify for entry-level positions. Still, in occupations such as illustrators and photographers, workers may have started out as assistants or apprentices. Among the few that do need experience is editors; workers in this occupation typically gain experience in a related one, such as reporter.
Networking and self-promotion To pursue a creative career, you should expect to take the initiative in networking and promoting your work. This process is often difficult in the beginning, when you don’t have a large portfolio or many professional connections. But it usually gets easier as you build a reputation. Having an online portfolio and a social media presence may help you to market your creativity. And applying for grants, such as through the National Endowment for the Arts, offers potential funding. Above all, remember to be patient. As workers in most fields can attest, it usually takes years to develop a solid career.
