ducarse en de gran importancia dentro de nuestra comunidad latina —irrelevante de su edad. Yo volví a la escuela hace pocos años y aprendí cómo ser intérprete judicial. Me encuentro ahora tratando de pasar el Examen Estatal de Intérprete Bilingüe. Ahora que estoy estudiando para esta prueba estoy constantemente aprendiendo nuevas palabras y me hacen recordar aquel tiempo cuando empecé a hablar español… bueno —no era realmente español sino una mezcla que todos llaman “pocho”. Trataba de encontrar la manera de mostrarme cómoda hablando, tratando que mi vocabulario sonase fluido y natural, de modo de no tener que pensar lo que quería decir y que simplemente me saliera. Hoy en día, cuando la gente me escucha hablar español nunca imaginarían que no crecí hablando español —en mi casa se hablaba inglés. Recuerdo que más de un pariente preguntaba “¿Y por qué no hablas español?” Mi mamá Margaret siempre nos habló en un inglés gramáticamente correcto de modo que aprendimos a hablar y escribir inglés muy bien. Fue cuando tenía como 13 años que me

etting an education is so important in our Latino community – no matter your age. I went back to school a few years ago to learn how to be an Interpreter for the Courts. I am now trying to pass the California State Bilingual Interpreter Exam. Now that I’m studying again for the Exam, I am constantly learning new words and it got me thinking to the time Carmen Torres where I started to speak in Stockton, CA Spanish …well, it wasn’t really Spanish as much as it was a mixture that everyone would call “pocho”... I was trying to find the way to sound comfortable, trying to find a way that my vocabulary would be fluid and natural, where I didn’t have to think about what I wanted to say, that I would just be able to say it. When people hear me speak Spanish today, they never believe that I did not grow up speaking Spanish – English was spoken at home. And I remember that more than one
family member would ask, “Why don’t you speak Spanish?” My mom Margaret always spoke to us in correct, flawless, English grammar so were always able to speak, read, and write very well in English. I was around 13 when I decided to go for it and learn how speak Spanish, and some of the first Spanish I learned were Mexican songs that my dad, Mike Torres, always played in our house. I grew up on “The Ranch” and heard Spanish from grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins and ‘uno que otro’ relative who would visit from Michoacán with their unique way of expressing themselves. My grandmother’s, speech, especially, was beyond hilarious and I know we would have had a blast together. When I felt I was really learning how to communicate with Mama Lupita, she already had cancer and, to our great sadness, passed away. I am comfortable speaking in English or Spanish. However my favorite language is Spanglish, a mixture of the two. It is said that it is not an official language, that we should speak one language or the other. But I see it as a tribute to my two worlds which allows me to be at home wherever I am..
decidí y aprendí a hablar español y lo primero que aprendí fueron las canciones mexicanas que mi papá, Mike Torres, tocaba en casa. Crecí en “El Rancho” y escuchaba el español de mis abuelos, tías, tíos, primos y “uno que otro” pariente que nos visitaba desde Michoacán con su manera tan particular de expresarse. Mi abuela, especialmente, era definitivamente divertida y sabía que lo podríamos pasar muy bien juntas pero —cuando
al fin sentí que estaba lista para comunicarme con Mamá Lupita— ya tenía cáncer y, para nuestro gran dolor, se nos fue. Me siento a mis anchas hablando en inglés o español. Sin embargo mi lenguaje favorito es spanglish, la mezcla de los dos. Se dice que no es un idioma de verdad, que debiésemos hablar el uno o el otro, pero yo lo veo como un tributo a mis dos mundos y que me permiten sentirme cómoda donde sea me encuentre.
