> What is cord blood?

Diseases Treated

The term “cord blood” is used to describe the blood that remains in the umbilical cord and the placenta after the birth of a baby. Up until recently this afterbirth was discarded as medical waste. Cord blood contains stem cells that may be cryopreserved for later use in medical therapies, such as stem cell transplants or clinical trials of new stem cell therapies. Learn more

This website was the first in 2003 to sort diseases treated with blood-forming stem cells into 3 categories: 1. Standard Therapies 2. Therapies in Clinical Trials 3. Experimental Treatments It is also important to distinguish between 2 modes of treatment: Allogeneic—patient receives stem cells from a matching donor, either a sibling or an unrelated donor Autologous—patient receives their own stem cells When parents donate to a public bank, they are supporting patients waround the world who are searching for an unrelated Allogeneic donor. When parents save cord blood in a family bank, they are reserving the options that the baby can use its own stem cells for an Autologous treatment, or an immediate relative can use the stem cells for an Allogeneic treatment.

What is cord blood donation? The parents sign an informed consent which gives a “public” cord blood bank permission to list their child’s blood on a database that can be searched to find a match for a transplant patient. The cord blood is listed purely by its tissue type, with no information about the identity of the donor. In the United States, Be The Match maintains a national network of public cord blood banks and registered donations. However, all the donation networks around the world cooperate with each other, so that a patient who one day benefits from your child’s cord blood may come from anywhere. It is truly a gift to the benefit of humankind. Learn more

The lists below include ALL therapies that use blood-forming stem cells, without distinction as to whether the stem cells were extracted from bone marrow, peripheral blood, or cord blood. Finally, in 2011 we have added a new category to this page listing Clinical Trials with stem cells from Cord Tissue. The stem cells of interest in cord tissue are not hematopoietic (blood-forming) stem cells, but Mesenchymal Stem Cells (MSC; more details if you download this pdf poster). Learn more

Donating cord blood in public bank can save lives. Each year nearly 20,000 people, ages 0-74, in the US are diagnosed with life-threatening illnesses where blood stem cell transplantation from a related or unrelated matched donor is their best treatment option. These patients have leukemia, lymphoma, or other life-threatening diseases that can be treated by a bone marrow or umbilical cord blood transplant.
